Manuel Bonilla actually won the elections fair and square, but since he was a character that the current president didn’t like, he didn’t get the job, Bonilla later started a military coup and placed himself as the president. 4. Bonilla is considered a good president nevertheless, a lot of the infrastructure that was created during his 2 terms (yeah you heard that right 2 terms!) is still used today. 5. You asking about "imagine if Wallmart has it's own army" - the huge most influential enterprises have definitely special mercanary battle groups in multiple countries they get profits from. Further more since those companies are practically "the government" ("ruling elite"), controling the media and thus national minds, you can consider the national armies at least partially being corporate armies -> solving corporate "problems".
A very similar thing happened here in Hawaii, look up “the big 5 Hawaii” to learn more about it, it’s been a while since I learned about it in school but they were the pineapple and sugar companies basically completely controlling Hawaii at the time. I'm not sure how I feel about marking a distinction between commercial imperialism, colonialism, and so on. The more I've learned about these various American companies and how they took over various islands and regions, and the more I learn about how the East India Trading Company and their own rise to power over an entire subcontinent, the more I realize they're just two waves of the same process. A private entity driven by profit takes control of a region in which a specific commodity is produced and uses their profits to take further control of the region or expand into new land without any real input from the country they originate from. The only difference is that once the East India Trading Company got big enough, the public started to have concerns about the sheer amount of power and influence they had until the state took control. That and a few devastating famines that killed millions, which, while they weren't caused by the Company (they don't control the weather after all), were certainly exacerbated by their extreme tax policies. Hell, during even the Great Bengal Famine of 1770, the EITC *raised* taxes in their region of control even further. Ten million people died, possibly more. Back to the point, there are far too many parallels between these two waves of imperialism for me to really feel a need to distinguish the two all that much.

Subbed from the moment you legitimately encouraged viewers to check out the original. Honestly, you are the only youtuber I know who actually adds much of anything in the form of content. That others don't isn't necessarily a bad thing - even the slightest human interaction with a good video can allow you to appreciate it once again as if seeing it for the first time - but while I wouldn't ever desire greater restrictions on this sort of thing for the reasons outlined above, it doesn't particularly endear one to the clearly vulturine reactor.
"You don't see companies doing this today...." Tesla helping overthrow Bolivia so he can pillage some Lithium says HOLA!
Doubt you’ll see this but the commonly accepted term fro the economic and political arrangement you referred to, where the government gets in bed with companies and makes way for them, is “neoliberalism”.

My blood still boils when I remember what the United Fruit co did to Guatemala
Great content.
im glad this guy is asking his viewers to go to the original video and drive engagement for them too. too many of these reaction channels just leech off of popular content so its nice to see this kind of thing.
10:37 That reaction, though.
Idk how but I wanna thank you for sending other viewers to my channel!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I wish you were my history teacher :/
Found your vids a while ago (year and a half ago or so, only watched a couple, but subbed), and I’m recently coming back and binging hard. My favorite, and best teacher was my history teacher in high school. I had him my junior and senior year, and he made me love coming to class, which was very, very out of character for me. My point is, I’m glad kids have a teacher like you. I’m sure you receive TONS of appreciation already, but seriously man, you may not know the effect (good) teachers have on their students. I hope you continue to upload and make a boatload of that YT money, cuz ik you’re not getting paid enough for the work you do as a teacher lmao
I like turtles
Cool story bro
Corporations still DO have that kind've power, mostly oil companies in this day and age.

I always hear that people die if they insult the government is that true?
No mention of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles or CIA Director Allen Dulles who provided legal representation for, and in Allen's case sat on the board of United Fruit.
I just did a pro historian move.(I subbed )
You can tell he’s a history teacher because he pauses the videos and talks over everything lmao i miss my history teachers
The Cynical Historian just put out a video on some common myths about Soviet Communism. If you're brave, go give it a watch. Just remind your commenters to be civil.
I am such a nerd....I loved this video. Mr. Terry's reactions to this video are really nice, measured. Nothing too over the top.

And yet again, unchecked capitalism is kind of the worst.
Well, you could move to the Soviet Union.

@@dubuyajay9964 There is grey between fascistic totalitarian controll and anarcho-capitalism. Where in that grey you fall is a different question.
I have an antique clock where I found a tag for the Hoaxie Fruit Co. on the tag, it says the clock was bought for somebody by somebody else and specified “don’t sell this clock”
From 1946
and China continues the tradition in Africa today
I mean to be fair so does the USA. I don’t know the ins and outs of these diplomatic/economic relationships, but I’ve heard that China is developing some actual infrastructure in those countries which (from what I know) is something the States typically do not do. But what do I know I’m just some RUclips comments guy

Ah America. Trading human rights for bananas. What a time to be alive
The bananas must flow
i like the idea of a dictionary entry for the term:
banana republic - usually not a republic, which economically depends on export of a single commodity, usually not bananas nowadays.
10:39 After working retail for so long and punching in the numbers 4-0-1-1 for each bunch of bananas that goes through my checkout lane, I will never be able to look at the Chiquita stickers or bands the same way ever again.
Thanks!
