    What I love about the things you share (apart from appreciating that you do take the time to share it) is that more often than not your videos are just inspiring. Try things, mess around with idea, laugh at what sounds like (or actually is) a mistake … grab some coffee and start over again. There are only one or two other people that have this level of impact on how I feel about making music - and even more important: help me to return to making music, again and again and again. Thank you so much!

    Great video, this is exactly what I do on every synth too. I also have Pro 2 and Pro 3 and let me expand on this Pro 3 patch:
    1. I start with the saw on VCO 1 but that is irrelevant atm - pulse will give you more round bottom though
    2. Filter - there are few things to do here - I choose one of the two low pass filters, crank up resonance and set cutoff. Instead creating simple AD filter envelope, I prefer going with ADSR like you, sometimes even with negative values, but that might be too much. Set key tracking just a bit. This is for a flavour , don't have to do this. I prefer having rounder bottom notes and brighter tops, that I can turn into acid if I use after touch. Do not assign your envelope amount to max. Control his the other way, with the pressure. Set filter envelope to retrigger.
    3. VCA envelope - turn on "velocity" so your envelope follows. Create zero or near zero attack, figure out decay, sustain, short release
    4. Now - a trick I picked up from the Tempest, and that always works if you want snappy sound - take VCA envelope as a source and VCA envelope decay as mod destination. Set it to 30 ish. This will make for a smooth end of your bass hit .
    5. Then, i turn on aux envelope to be pretty snappy - and this is a matter of tweaking - assign it to resonance, and mod it with pressure - to allow for more resonance control while you play.
    6. Turn on VCO 2 - we have 3 oscillators, lets use at least 2! - here I go with pulse and assign slow lfo to the shape , taking care it never goes past 70% of pulse width squash - mix it in 50% under saw, it is sill way louder than saw.
    7. I would always turn glide on and add a little bit of port here.
    8. Effects, drive etc, as you wish :)
    It is given this is simple patch we all go for as soon as we see an oscillator and a filter, there is something so satisfying in that "boom boom - squelch" sound when you hi two bottom d's and then raise it an octave lol

      I feel like the Pro 2 is verrrry underrated as a mono / paraphonic beast... I too own one and combined with a small investment in modular this is a dream synth. I need to make it a more central part of my modular rig than I currently do... sort of got the GAS when delving into the world of Eurorack, but the Pro 2's 32/8 or 16/16 sequencer and mod matrix for 4 CV outs (and midi cc) gives you so many options to bring rich analog character (analog VCOs that wiggle and waver on their own according to power current) and some wild effects (wavefolders, CV delay, multisampling to make it a mono-para-poly rig, extra s&h, quantizers, sequencing arpeggiation) to a precise digital sound design tool... yes, my modular became a fun rig all on its own, but part of the fun was putting together small skiffs specifically to gig with the Pro 2 - no one knows what to expect when bringing me into a jam.

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield 2 года назад

      @@fetterssv PRO 2 sound source is 100% digital, when you mentioned wavering VCOs, did you mean PRO3 or another, modular sound source? I think both synths are monsters and while I am sure sequencers work great for you on modular, not using these two synths architecture is a shame:))

    Synthesizers can become overwhelming when you look at the infinity of sounds that can be produced from a myriad of available controls and settings. I love how you zero in on a small section of a synth and show the functionality of just a few parameters at a time. This really promotes understanding of what is really going on behind the scenes in your filters and envelopes. Many times I think that the simplicity in how a sound is crafted wins out over convoluted and quirky setups and complicated routings. Great video! Thanks for enhancing my understanding and my inspiration! And thanks for just being real ;-) about how all of us do this thing we love.

    despite my main monosynth being a moog granmother with shared amp/filter envelope, the keyboard release amp mode allows you to approximate this patch as well.

  • @TheActualJae
    @TheActualJae 2 года назад +19

    I spent years wondering in the wilderness, not using the filter envelope when I created bass sounds. I figured it out, oh, like 3 months ago with my Moog Minitaur…… Lemme tell ya, I’d really thought the thing that mattered was the oscillators, and it’s just not true (at least with bass sounds). You can filter any wave down for a good bass sound and then, to really make it sing, start using the filter envelop (as you show here).
    Honestly, it’s one of those things that feels so simple when you figure it out that it kind of escapes notice that you even learned anything. And, I think because of that, nobody really explains this technique to new producers. So, I’m glad you made this video, honestly everyone going about making bass synth sounds should be aware of this. Hopefully they find this video ;)

It's very easy to make this kind of synth bass patch with the Roland Juno 106, in fact there is a preset called funky, I think that is close-ish. For those of you who are wondering how a synth with only a 2 digit LED display has patch names, the 106 came with a sheet of paper with the patch numbers and next to it, the patch names!

    Thanks dude for much clarity on how to use sustain to control an internal filter, very useful. Talking of Novation; I have a BassStation - the original version - unfortunately the ADSR envelope settings are switched between the amp and the filter (and the PWM kinda) by teeny tiny itty bitty switches that they must have stolen out of the back of recycled 1970's transistor radios and so whatever setting you've got it on turns out to be the wrong one whenever you twiddle a knob. Pfffff! Sounds great though once you've dialed something in and "saved" it. Pretty useless in a performative way except you can generally adjust the filter with the mod wheel but even that is a bit hit and miss. I've taken to playing it through an external filter, DJ style lately. I'm skint, it's a hobby. Any suggestions, other than buy a BS2?

    You are complicating the whole "where is it going to land" and "max attack and decay" thing, while having not one, but TWO auxilliary envelopes in front of you. By applying recursive modulation to any of these, either directly in aux envelope section or in the mod matrix (I suggest the latter as you can choose multiple destinations), you can fully control "where it lands". In this case you can: change envelope stage shapes for attack and decay between linear, exponential and logarythmic, as well as control sustain by applying negative recursive modulation. It sounds more complicated than it actually is. And... you are making bass patch using P6 filter, while there is perfectly moogy ladder next to it?:)
