Hi everyone, this is JD, your gadget review friend.
Harmony is a fork of Android, it is based AOSP which means Android Open Source Project. If we read the specs on paper, it feels like any other phone with the exception of the operating system.
It has Snapdragon 888 with 8 gigs of RAM, LEICA cameras that shoots really good photos and videos, OLED screen with 1 billion color, it has nano memory card slot and typical 4100 mah battery which results into a good battery life. Looks ordinary but different when you start using it. Today, we will talk about the struggles and satisfaction of using Harmony OS on Huawei P50.

I have always been a Huawei fan, been using it since P9 model and up to P30. The real struggle is the banking apps. I can do without Google apps but no banking apps is a huge drawback. I hope one day it will make a comeback. Now I switched to Oppo. Hopefully they don't get banned too.

Great content! Not being able to use Gapps the "normal" way is frustrating, especially when you take into consideration how much this costs, unless you really are a big Huawei fan or you if you live in China like I do

Imagine how great huawei would have been by now if not for the US sanctions. Last huawei phone ive used was the P30pro which was their last flagship with google services and until now that phone is still running smooth with good battery life. Cant say the same with the samsung s10e that i used alongside it. One ui was choppy and battery life sucks so i sold it. But the p30 pro is still with me. EMUI may not be the prettiest but it is one of the smoothest experiences I had in android.
Same experience with my P30. Still in perfect condition. I don't know which phone I should switch to...
@@schnauzelwauzel id say go the pixel route. I have the pixel 6 now and its been a solid phone for the price I got it.

@@schnauzelwauzel battery is on par I would say. Camera is no contest- pixel 6 wins. Plus the higher screen refresh rate actually makes the p30 choppy when used side by side. Go for the pixel 6pro if you need that zoom lens of the p30pro.
If there are no US sanctions, Huawei might be top 1 in smartphone, remember the good old days, top 3 smartphone brands are APPLE, HUAWEI, SAMSUNG .. there was a time that Huawei sales beat Apple, and Huawei became rank 1... In my experience, EMUI optimization in games is close to iOS...

I have a little issue here that I'd like u to help me clarify if u can; I have a Huawei p30 pro that came with GMS and runs on harmony is 2.0, recently, I got an update notification telling me to update to harmony is 3.0. my question is, would updating to 3.0 erase the Google already in my phone? Or would it be unaffected?

great point, I actually noted that on my OP11 review, the ColorOS. I even see the Oppo app. OP should have cleaned that at least. It was a mess and felt the OS is an afterthought.

My burning question from Canada, which I'm going to repost in several places, is, where are all the video creators getting the Huawei phones now, particularly the P50 Pro? We have a Canadian version of their website, plus access to their original site. They have different options for smartphones but no "BUY" button, link, nor cart. Their Amazon store lists their products but no phones. Other sellers on that site have the P40 Pro at most. But in no way can I purchase them directly. Is the site being neutered by Canadian authorities? Because how are anyone else getting their phones? I'm willing to sacrifice Google functionality for the camera features.

Thanks for this review. It's so hard to find a real review of using HarmonyOS outside China. In the US, I think this phone will only work with T-mobile network. Also, this phone is 4G only.

I still have my Mate 20X, which is bettervthan my current daily phone. Older but better for gps, photos, processing power and bigger screen
That's why I'm still holding my Huawei P20 with GMS. The peak of huawei. The legendary phone. This is the best smartphone of huawei Wayback 2018.

The best phine I ever owned was Huawei. I strongly oppose evil US domination and bully boy tactics. I will buy Huawei and Xiaomi from now on .... I am sick of the Sansung / google nuisance on Samsung ....
Hi, I have a Chinese Mate 30 Pro 5G with Harmony OS 3.0 and Google Play Services installed on it. Since I updated Harmony OS 2.0 to 3.0 I can't see Google Maps in all my apps. I can't see the Google Map that WhatsApp show me when I try to share my location. I can't see Google Maps when I try to truck a purchase in Wallapop, Weather apps, etc, etc. Just I can see a message displaying: "Google Play Services are updating ..." and nothing else. There are a lot of users like me with the same issue. /// What can I do to fix this important issue with Harmony Os 3.0 update, please ??
I don't even have Google on mine. Just using a paid version of Dual space and everything is working even Google Apps.

i have huawei mate50 with harmony os 3 and the only problem that i got is that i don't receive any notifications except when am inside the app , i closed the battery optimization and turned all the notifications on and bubbles no matter google apps or not , from gbox or gspace or not, even apps from app gallery ,
should i pin apps in the background to keep receiving notifications?
Hmmmm... I receive notifications on apps that I installed. My prob is when I installed them inside gspace or dualspace. when I close that app, then notification will no longer come.

First make sure that you have GBox version
1.3.31 installed or earlier. They switched from
Google Play Services to Lighthouse/MicroG
in newer versions that are not so compatible
with all apps. Then the GBox app need to
managed manually in App Launch aswell
as Battery Optimization. The same applies
for all other apps that you want to receive
notifications. To make sure the app is not
killed in the background you need to manage
it manually in App Launch and Don't allow
the Battery Optimizer killing the app.
Lastly if the notifications come in late it could
be the app requires Google Firebase for
push notifications (Twitter & Instagram for
example need this). This you can achieve by
installing microG. If you have already microG
Vanced installed and you are logged in
Vanced then you only need to install microG
start it once do the recommended steps
(again App Launch & Battery Optimization)
and you don't need to login again (which
might be not possible as Huawei devices
need a special code for logging in) just
start/restart the apps you want to receive
notifications from (except GBox as this one is
not using it).
since i made this changes things started to get fixed but not 100% for sure

In what category, speed? It feels snappy like the first time. Maybe few updates that added some features. Still no Google but you have dualspace/gspace.

@@GadgetRevNow nice sarcasm😃. I know Harmoney relies on android to achieve some system capabilities but it do it as a dual layer but not dependent on it solely! Harmoney also has its bit of work to do but technically it's not forked it's like saying skoda (european car ) is a german car just because it uses it's engine 😃 long story short i know it's forked android but from technical perspective it's not. Now deal with it cause i aint changing my opinion at least until harmony develop full native system so that i can really prove you wrong 😂

reason my switched to p50pro? my s21u got water dmg and i spotted huawei p50pro when i was looking for new phone to change..
then i came back to huawei family and i have chosen p50pro last year.
it is a smooth device until today, good camera, good zooming.
the only thing i miss s21u was the camera zoom at 3x, the frame, the ratio just beautiful compare with p50pro 3.5x
