Thank you for this video I’m starting to get hyperpigmentation now in my early 40’s and I had no idea what to do ...I’ve always had clear skin and it’s really been affecting my self esteem .thank you
Hey guys!! I’m going to try to post on Thursdays too! People ask about hyperpigmentation all the time and I worked really hard to clear my skin of it after I had a baby. It’s a process! Be gentle to your skin. The hyperpigmentation takes years to form, so don’t try to get rid of it quickly.

I am going to have a series of 4 depigmentation peels (Dermaceutic's mela peel forte) at my derm's , hopefully this will get rid of my stubborn pigmentation and Melasma. I also have terrible melasma on my forehead and upper cheeks and I was really giving up hope because I feel like I’ve tried everything under the sun and nothing has really worked I’m tired of having to cover it up with makeup all the time. Just like you im so grateful I found this video. I had to subscribe 😁💕

This is really informative, i've tried many products but none of them did the job... Interesting, thank you for that, I'll make sure to ask my physician to check my liver. I have what looks like a mustache, but in my skin & hair is virtually non-existent there. I don't drink, I've never had any other than coffee as something that would affect my liver badly. She did mention birth control, so perhaps that's why, but I've had this my entire life. There's been now two times my Vitamin D levels have been less than half the lowest acceptable level & in one of these times it was my thyroid which also had extremely low output levels. I'm really curious as to why (doc had no answer) & whether the discoloration is a side effect? I live in Alaska, so I'm one of those lucky people who get to eat a ton of salmon & as I said, I'm a coffee drinker. Thanks all & have a great day today!
Skin turnover is 28-40 days. Depending on how deep the hyperpigmentation is in your dermal layers will depend on how long it takes to come to the surface. Susan, you should also explain the difference between chemical & physical spf sunscreens. Not all sunscreen is "created equal". Just because your make up or moisturizer has spf, doesn't mean you should skip actual spf sunscreen application & reapplication throughout the day & sun exposure you receive.
I just would like to share...Differin gel gave me so many cystic acnes, big ones on top of each other. I continued using it for a 1.5 months coz the label says that it "can" cause breakouts at first before it clears out. But no way, never again. I used the full line up of Khiel's ( blue cleanser, Calendula toner, Vitamin C serum, breakout control blemish treatment, gel moisturizer and sunscreen) as suggested by the salesperson and my pimples subsided only after 2 months. Now I only have hyperpigmentation but it is slowly clearing up. It has been 4 months since I started using Khiel's products. Since the vitamin C serum is so expensive, I did the DIY Vitamin C serum I saw on youtube which, I feel, works wonders, too.
Cosmelan chemical peeling can speed up the process. It is an expensive treatment, but it really takes off a lot of skin and smooths the skin tone. The home treatment stings but it gets better. The end result is worth the effort 👍.
I never realized that my acne leaving dark spots was hyperpigmentation! I always assumed it was part of the healing process and was scarring from it! After I started using a Retin-a cream though I did notice a significant decrease in dark spots when I do get breakouts, and i've even noticed some very fine lines i have become less noticeable!
There are quite a few comments about how expensive some of these products are. The company The Ordinary makes a lot of single ingredient products that are similar to some of the more expensive options that were discussed in this video, and it is very affordable.
Yes please! How do you apply your hidroquinone? Morning, night? Before the retinol ? Before Vit C in the morning... please help!! Thank you so much, you are amazing!
Hope it work for you. If not i will suggest papaya, glutathione and mulberry even tone cream. It clears melasma and treat acne effectively. I use it as a daily body moisturizer.
Thank you for that...as an older ex surfer my skin has blotches after the damage done surfing without sun block (was uncool). Didn't know you could "bleach" it with cremes. Great...
I really like this style of video. Definitely more appropriate and helpful. Thank you! Do you have a cleanser you prefer for those of us with melasma? Thank you!
Susan Susan Susan I love this video. And I have to tell you...of all of them many sides of wisdom and knowledge that you bring to your RUclips family my favorite part is when you are Susan the skin care expert ...hands down there is an energy about you that says “ I love talking about skincare, you can trust me and I love what I do” I was so happy to see that you included the Amazon retinol ...the last time you spoke to us about you had just discovered it... so for you to recommend it .... I am off to buy it right now
Amanda Westbrooke Thank you! I truly love to talk about skincare. 👍 Let me know what you think of the retinol. I’ve been using for a couple weeks now and I’ll warn it’s a touch strong for over the counter, but surprisingly not irritating. I use it two days in a row, then take a night off, then go two days again. That seems to be the right formula for me, but I would love to know your take on it once you try.
@@SusanYara I'm new & am slowly learning how to build a good skincare routine more than just wash & SPF moisturizer for the last 30+yrs. But I on a major budget. I've been eyeing the brand Acura & have tried their.15% retinal cream & am told to slowly build up the % & how often to use it. Wondering if you know of this brand? I'll check your playlists to see if you've addressed it or not. It hasn't dried me out, I use it for darkness (mustache sans hair?!) & over my hinted areas of crow's feet/wrinkles, phyto scars? & DV related scars. This in combo of a rose/carrot seed/jojoba/sunflower seed oil blend has already severely reduced one DV scar on my cheek. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these issues & have a great day today !
I’ve been using vitamin C with ferulic acid and E. I’m telling you my acne scars have faded and some just gone. It takes quite awhile to go away though. Literally month after month I was so mad that they were still there. It took like 6 months to start seeing a difference. ! And I used this acid gel wash from wishtrend. Just be patient. It works. I follow a 10 step program. I also use a skin resurfacing gel mask once a week.
Sumer Tatum-Clem by Timeless 20% CE and Fwrulic acid. I buy this refill size and I do refrigerate it. I bought this 9/18/19. I’m halfway through. So even though it’s something like $70, it’s a large bottle and it’s still clear and still works and it’ll take me through to March. So that is about $10/month. Just refrigerate it.
Nissira Patricia so this is more than 10 steps. cleanser is cosrx low ph good morning gel cleanser or Acwell ph balancing cleansing foam.. Then Pyunkang Yul moisture ampoule in my chest and lower neck. Then I use Acwell ph balancing toner. Then follow with I’m with Rice essence. THEN I’d use the vitamin C then coq10 after. I will dab on some Peach and Lily glass skin refining serum for added moisture. I use Make Prem hydrate me on my face. Nivea pure and natural on neck and chest. Then I use Hado Labo she correcting eye cream and after that soaks in I top it with a little Whamisa eye essence. FINALLY I use a sunscreen. I have like 8 so I switch out depending on the weather. Just started trying Klairs soft airy UV essence. Great for winter for sure. That’s daytime. At night I only add clean it zero for a double cleanse and right after I use Then (at night only) I use Klairs youth activating drops. Then the rest of my routine. It actually only takes me like 5 minutes. I’ve been doing this for over 2 years so I’m pretty speedy. I will try and do a mask 2-3 times a week and I use the Peach and Lily super reboot resurfacing mask once a week. Whew! If someone laid out this list to me I’d say they were crazy as hell. It really takes a little bit of time and the results are worth it. I wouldn’t do all of that if I saw nothing! Aren’t you glad you asked? Haha
@@C1nderfire Thank you for the detailed description! I am also started to use Korean skincare so its good to know that some people are as "crazy" as me. :) I am also using Cosrx AHA and BHA serums to fade scars.
I'm trying to help my dad out with his dark spots, haha. He's 66 so it's probably just aging, but he also loves to stand in the sun without sunscreen 🤦♀️ I told him sunscreen was MANDATORY! But other than that, is the advice in this video appropriate for his age? Thanks in advance!
I use Aloe Vera glutathione lotion. It contains Aloe Vera extract, vitamin c, glutathione and soluble collagen. It has cleared my melasma and acne as well. It moisturizes well too
When I was preg w my 3rd child I got melasma across my forehead n cheek 6 weeks after giving birth it all went away 2 yrs later I got preg w my 4th child the melasma came back n this time w a vengeance my whole face was one big veil of melasma 5 yrs later It’s still there so when this video popped up on my notifications I clicked so fast I hate my melasma it looks so bad I feel like a spotted giraffe n it’s so hard for ur makeup to look good I’m so aggravated I finally thought there’s a way to get rid of this but unfortunately I can’t afford any of the products mentioned in this video n now w this government shutdown I have no income whatsoever everything is wiped out but im going to stay positive n maybe way in the future I can look bac on this video n b able to afford these products!!!! Ty so much for sharing ur tips for melasma!!!!!!!
Angelina Carraway35 check out The Ordinary by Deciem, specifically products with vit C, niacinamide, and Alpha Arbutin as well as all their AHAs (acids). It’s very affordable. Also check out Gothamista’s YT channel for videos on this subject. She is very good at suggesting a wide of products at different price points. Best of luck! xx
Also invest in a good sunscreen there's lots of affordable ones out there you just have to find what works for you ♡ UV exposure worsens melasma and the treatments for melasma make skin more sensitive to UV rays so sun protection is important
Angelina, try to buy a big leaf of organic Aloe Vera (in France it costs only 1 euro) - you basically put the gel straight from the plan onto to your melasma , every morning and night for as long as possible. I've been doing It for the past 4 months and mine has lightened tremendously. Consistency is key though ! But Aloe Vera DOES work :)
That was great. Just the video i needed! I have a little hyperpigmentation from a childhood in Africa, which has now reached a point where I want to do something about it. As you say, I didn't get it overnight so I mustn't expect it to go overnight either....
If I'm not mistaken, when I was preparing for my essay for bachelor degree, I read that we have to avoid niacinamide and vitamin A in the morning because of its low photostability. And retinol is a type of vitamin A...
I'm a nursing mama and would love to have a video on skin care. I didn't realize you couldn't use some products while pregnant/ nursing. Can you recommend some products that are safe?
Hi Susan, I am so thankful I discovered your youtube videos. I am all about skin care. What do you think about Rodan and Fields skin care products. I had kind of like your issue 1.5 years ago and decided I need to switch products. I started using R+F Reverse Brightening skin care regimen and after about 1 year I really saw results, my skin brightened up and most of my skin hyperpigmentation or sunspots went away, except for a few that are still there. I believe these remaining spots are from me picking up my hormonal one or two zits that i occassionally get. After watching this video i started using the liiyana retinol and sunday riley vit c. I do like them a lot and using them as alternate to my retinol vit c cream that comes with R+F reverse brightening. I am thinking of trying the pigment gel, maybe this will be the one that will remove the remaining pigmentation on my cheek bone. I would love to get your opinion on this. Thank you and keep making skincare videos. I truly believe you are one legit skincare vlogger.
I love you guys channel 💗💕 can you guys do skin care for dry acne skin but for teens I been struggling with acne and acne scares and I wanna find a way to clear them I really would want to see more stuff to for teens and because if you want to have great skin it starts when your young I want to see the basic skin care things and tips and advice for are young skin ☺️💕
I wish she would have before and after pictures tho.The best natural exfoliating is fresh aloe vera it also has inflammation property to get rid of your melasma and hyperpigmentation. I've been using it for a week and omg it works my dark spots is faded I'm gonna keep using it forever. Tretinoin is also very good to get rid hyperpigmentation but it's a little harsh on skin if you have sensitive skin
Rose hip oil has really helped my dark spots left over from pimples. I have used it every night for about 6 months, and I now am really noticing them dissapear slowly but surly .
@@ibusofieyolanda7888 I bought mine off the Deciem website . It's from The Ordinary . I have had the best luck with that brand. I also have bought it at Sprouts or Whole Foods, I can't remember which one. But I prefer "The Ordinary" it is affordable and has worked the best for me 😁hope that helps!
I have age spots and malasma. I used pixi glow tonic as my aha, palmers skin success with hydroquinone, differin adapaline retinol gel, perricone md vitamin c esters serum, (will be trying the ordinary vitamin c next)neutrogena baby sunscreen with zinc,( yes its thick and white like baby diaper rash ointments but I'm pale enough that you dont see the whiteness on me and I'm allergic to the sun, I have polymorphic light eruption and chemical sunscreens burn my skin for some reason). I also use the cerave line of moisturizers. I use all these products daily, but before cerave, I had the retinol uglies with a wind burn,( ah love New York weather in winter.) Last year. Cerave healed my skin in days and I havent had dry skin since I started using it. I also use a hyaluronic acid serum, dont have a favorite. I didn't have the money to spend on high end products, so I went with things from the drug store that had active ingredients that everyone says work. And it did take time. A year. My malasma is now a pink color instead of brown, and it's easy to cover with makeup. My age spots are almost gone. And my aging skin looks younger. Not as many fine lines, is firmer, just looks healthier. So it can be done on a budget
I highly recommend The Ordinary's Vitamin C ... I buy the 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder from them and mix my own. It's so easy and then I can mix the strength I want and I mix small batches so it is always fresh and I don't have to worry about oxidation. Cerave makes great products and I use their day and night creams on a regular basis. The Ordinary also makes a great chemical exfoliator in their AHA 30%/BHA 2% Peel. Actually, The Ordinary makes some great products and they are very affordable. She recommends some very high-priced items in this video such as Drunk Elephant, Sunday Riley, Dr. Perricone ... and, even tho, I can afford those brands, I don't buy them because I can buy products with as good a quality for much less and save those $$ for fun makeup. I would also recommend Retin A (tretinoin) instead of retinol. A retinol has to go through 2 conversions to get to where Retin A starts out and you never know how much you are actually getting. For those who do not want to deal with a doc and prescription and insurance (most insurance won't cover Retin A unless it is for acne), then I recommend Curology ... they formulate a formula for you (the anti-aging formula generally contains tretinoin, niacinamide and azelaic acid) in strengths based on your answers to their questions and they send it to you every two months for $20 per month. The first month is free ... you only pay for shipping. And, because I am not wasting $$ on Drunk Elephant, Sunday Riley, etc. I am not feeling the crunch in spending the $20 per month for Retin A, which is the ONLY scientifically proven anti-aging product.
Susan, I got my dark spots..from the military doing Dermabrasion to my face because I was on numerous medications but the main culprit of the ice pick skin that was living with. Depressing. I truly hope this helps.
Thank you for breaking the process down in such an organized way! I've been so confused as to when to apply this product, that product... I absolutely love how informative you were but yet easy to understand!! So appreciate this! Thank you!!
Hi Susan, I would like to use the retinol at night too. After which step in my night routine do I use it? Would it be after my toner and can I use it as a substitute for moisturizer or no?

Check out Aloe Vera glutathione lotion. Great for clearing melasma. It contain Aloe vera extract, vitamin c and glutathione. It recommended for treating acne as well
What about in our legs and underarms? I have dark spots and I wish to find something that actually works. I love these recommendations will be buying the retinol! Thank you!
Susan, does the pigmentation come back in the same place where it was? I mean, if you’ve treated it and it disappeared but then if something causes it again, would it appear elsewhere or the same spot?
I just came across this vid and am very thankful because I have extreme Melasma and haven't found a regiment that works for me. The Melasma is a huge hindrance in my life but I will try this. Thank you!
Use to battle melasma until Aloe Vera glutathione lotion was recommended to me. It effectively clears melasma and also treat acne. It is literally my body moisturizer. Very affordable too. Check it out.
I have hyper pigmentation since two months. I think it’s spreading on my face and neck. It has covered my forehead. The skin specialist has given glycolic and a Azelaic acid but not others that you have mentioned.
Strivectin was a fanatic product when it first came out. Then the company reduce the percentage of active ingredient making it take much longer to see results.
I've heard that you have to put salicylic acid(BHA) on the spot where you have blackheads, then wash it after 10 minutes, put some clay mask, and then some tightening serum to tighten your pores.
I’m an esthetician and I couldn’t of explained hyperpigmentation better! Very good product recommendations too!! Great job:)

Do you have a cleanser you prefer for those of us with melasma? Thank you!
Yes good question!
Where I could by that vitamin C
Susan Susan Susan I love this video. And I have to tell you...of all of them many sides of wisdom and knowledge that you bring to your RUclips family my favorite part is when you are Susan the skin care expert ...hands down there is an energy about you that says “ I love talking about skincare, you can trust me and I love what I do”
I was so happy to see that you included the Amazon retinol ...the last time you spoke to us about you had just discovered it... so for you to recommend it ....
Susan Yara absolutely...I’m curious if you have tried the Maelove vitamin C serum and how it compares to Sunday Riley?
Amanda Westbrooke I haven’t but I’ll check it out. 👍
Hi! Which Vitamin C serum did you use?
Sumer Tatum-Clem by Timeless 20% CE and Fwrulic acid. I buy this refill size and I do refrigerate it. I bought this 9/18/19. I’m halfway through. So even though it’s something like $70, it’s a large bottle and it’s still clear and still works and it’ll take me through to March. So that is about $10/month. Just refrigerate it.
Could you please let us know the 10 products you use.
What about dark circles around your eyes? You'd need something really simple, safe and soft.. she's had it for a long time and is now 16
How do you get your hair so shinny!!!!??
try to use Sebastian cellophane
Cha Harris is it a hair color??
its just a treatment.
Do you use or have a recommendation for a vitamin C product for the body?
I use Aloe Vera glutathione lotion. It contains Aloe Vera extract, vitamin c, glutathione and soluble collagen. It has cleared my melasma and acne as well. It moisturizes well too
Hi ...kindly pls send me the names ofnthe products that u are using.thanks amd God bless
Peggy Carter hi,can you recomend a brand name of retinol?alot of retinol in the market,i try twice to buy but none of them works
Thank you very much Susan. I will buy those products as soon as i can afford them.
That was great. Just the video i needed! I have a little hyperpigmentation from a childhood in Africa, which has now reached a point where I want to do something about it. As you say, I didn't get it overnight so I mustn't expect it to go overnight either....
Thank you! I was praying for this type of information! You're a God send!! ❤
Hi Susan, can you recommend for dark circles under the eyes.
Hi maam how to order for pigmentation and melasma thank you
Can you please least those products you use and the brands? Thanks
If I'm not mistaken, when I was preparing for my essay for bachelor degree, I read that we have to avoid niacinamide and vitamin A in the morning because of its low photostability. And retinol is a type of vitamin A...
Yes And That's The Reason Why She Uses It Every Other Evening. :)
x
Love how quick, informative, and straight forward you were!
This gives me hope! Thank you!!👏👏👏
I'm a nursing mama and would love to have a video on skin care. I didn't realize you couldn't use some products while pregnant/ nursing. Can you recommend some products that are safe?
With hydroquinone, because it is typically very irritating, the derm I know advises to use it on top of moisturizer instead of before.
I just ordered 3 of your recommended products! Can’t wait to try it out!
Stacie Santos hi where did you bought the products and what products?
Did it work
Hi Susan, I am so thankful I discovered your youtube videos.
Susan what is your hair color? I love it!
Where I can buy rose hip oil?
@@ibusofieyolanda7888 I bought mine off the Deciem website . It's from The Ordinary . I have had the best luck with that brand. I also have bought it at Sprouts or Whole Foods, I can't remember which one. But I prefer "The Ordinary" it is affordable and has worked the best for me 😁hope that helps!
Thank you! Of all of the (probably) hundreds of skin care/hyper pigmentation videos I've watched, this one was the most informative.
What should you NOT mix with Retinol? Is there an acid that should not be paired with it?
I love your videos Susan. Always so informative. As soon as I get the notification, I click!!
My skin is the total opposite of yours, but I loved your comment!
Thank you so much for this info!! How do you feel about a toner?
Susan, I got my dark spots..from the military doing Dermabrasion to my face because I was on numerous medications but the main culprit of the ice pick skin that was living with. Depressing. I truly hope this helps.
Thank you for breaking the process down in such an organized way! I've been so confused as to when to apply this product, that product... I absolutely love how informative you were but yet easy to understand!! So appreciate this! Thank you!!
When should you apply retinol in your skin care routine? Before moisturizer? After ?
Hi Susan, I would like to use the retinol at night too. After which step in my night routine do I use it? Would it be after my toner and can I use it as a substitute for moisturizer or no?
Thanks for you show
Helpful video, thank you! How bad was your melasma? Can you share before and after photos? I just want to understand how much melasma I can realistically remove completely
Check out Aloe Vera glutathione lotion. Great for clearing melasma. It contain Aloe vera extract, vitamin c and glutathione. It recommended for treating acne as well
Pueden poner todo en español tambien los videos.
@@cynthiagoode2082 hola me puedes ayudar en español por favor? Gracias
Cynthia Goode, where can we get in usa.
Cynthia Goode does it really help
What about in our legs and underarms? I have dark spots and I wish to find something that actually works. I love these recommendations will be buying the retinol! Thank you!
ambi fade cream, you just have to use sunscreen while you use it or else the spots will darken with sun exposure.
@@milly4987 Thanks!
Susan, does the pigmentation come back in the same place where it was? I mean, if you’ve treated it and it disappeared but then if something causes it again, would it appear elsewhere or the same spot?
Chemical exfoliation is life! ❤️❤️❤️
Where can I buy the first one??? Help help help

Love the casual format! Also going to try the retinol cream.
Let us know what you think of the retinol when you try it!
How often do you use the Kiehl’s Epidermal Re-Texturizing Micro Dermabrasion exfoliator?
Thank you for this video. I have been using ambi fade cream but have not seen a difference. Will give the pca gel a try.
Susan pls talk about acne 😭😢and acne scars pls and i think this video is too good i have started even trying them out 😊☺
Loved the video..which other brands wd u recomend for anti aging creams on top of retinol? Like shisiedo or lancome absolu soft cream
Love the more relaxed videos! Keep them coming! I like these much better then the older format.
I will try it! I trust you! Love your videos!
Love this! Could you please do a video on redness solutions?
I just came across this vid and am very thankful because I have extreme Melasma and haven't found a regiment that works for me. The Melasma is a huge hindrance in my life but I will try this. Thank you!
Use to battle melasma until Aloe Vera glutathione lotion was recommended to me. It effectively clears melasma and also treat acne. It is literally my body moisturizer. Very affordable too. Check it out.
Cynthia Goode what’s the name of the lotion?
Great info. Thanks for sharing great options.
What about Nevis of Ota any comments or recommendations to minimize on face?
I have hyper pigmentation since two months.
I think it’s spreading on my face and neck. It has covered my forehead.
The skin specialist has given glycolic and a Azelaic acid but not others that you have mentioned.
Hi Susan I live in Australia. Is there anyway of getting the products that you have mentioned in Australia.
I like chemical exfoliating. The ordinary aha bha peeling solution. Strivectin skin reset, elemis papaya enzyme and elemis flower peptide mask!
I just tried Kate Somerville's Exfolikate and omg I love it!
Strivectin was a fanatic product when it first came out. Then the company reduce the percentage of active ingredient making it take much longer to see results.
Is Strivectin still that good...I've been meaning to try it!
Elemis is sooo good
Hi! Can you recommend something for blackheads and open pores? ESP on the nose and cheeks
I've heard that you have to put salicylic acid(BHA) on the spot where you have blackheads, then wash it after 10 minutes, put some clay mask, and then some tightening serum to tighten your pores.
I agree with everything the commenter above mentioned and if you don't have that serum to tighten pores try witch hazel- it works.
Zari A, I’be only heard of witch hazel for redness or irritation.
Rija Siddiqui, as someone said clay mask work really well, I recommend the Aztec clay mask. You can get it off Amazon for around $8-$9
Anonymous Penguin check out "10 Ways To Use Witch Hazel" by the RUclipsr/ Beauty Content Creator named Zabrena.
Hi Susan. What's the difference between hyperpigmentation and freckles? Are freckles just a type of hyperpigmentation or are they different entirely?
Do you recommend Lumispa?
Susan, this goes same as for acne scars right? Thanks 😘
Hi! How often do you recommend to do physical expoliación for hyperpigmentation?
I am so excited to try this!

Question....do you use both exfoliants same night? And then skip a night. Or how do you use them?
