Hi Gordon great review. Yes I’d love to see a Sony 70-350 / sigma 100-400 comparison with Sony a6400. I think many other crop frame users would like to see the same. Thanks. Good work.
I also wished he would have placed the SEL 70-350 next to the Sigma 100-400 in picture, so we could see the difference in size better. I owned the 70-350, selled it and considered it a mistake afterwards. Thinking of rebuying it, but the Sigma is also an interesting candidate. But i am worried i will not take it with me being so heavy and big.

Perfect Combo for my A6400 to start out with some wildlife photography and also capturing my dogs from a distance in action and also on my A7 Mark 1 for telephoto Landscape Pictures.. 👌

The Sony E 70-350mm is one of my all-time favorite APS-C lenses; but looks like this is a good alternative to the FE 100-400mm.
If there was a 2x teleconverter available for this lens, I'd buy it right now.
Hmm, there is! Sigma released a 1.4X and 2X teleconverter the same day they did with this lens.

The lens that would really benefit from a GOOD 1.4x converter is the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 which would result in a 98-252mm f/4 lens using the 1.4x on a full frame camera and an equivalent 147- 378mm f/4 on a crop camera... If a 2x converter could be used decently on a crop camera, the result would be a 210-540 f/5.6...

Sony 70-350 is so much smaller though as its APSC only. Same price but so much easier to handle. I think if you are sticking to APSC cameras, that's no contest better lens.
been debating whether or not the extra 50mm is worth the upgrade....here in Canada the 100-400 is $300 more and the 70350G is such a great performer
@Rich Clark Productions I imagine most viewers are aware. The g lens is at 525mm equivalent which is the closest competitor at the closest entry level price point
@Foto4Max one is made for APSC thus does not get the extra zoom effect that a FF lens mounted to same APSC body would yield
@@fepethepenguin8287 That is absolutely not the case. Focal length is focal length, it's a physical aspect of the lens. An APS-C at 100mm and a FF lens at 100mm both on an APS-C body will give you an identical field of view.

I have a suggestion for your lens reviews: could you include whether or not and to what degree they are parfocal? This is an important but often overlooked feature, particularly video shooters.

The 70-350 is really good. I would always prefer a lens designed for the given sensor size. Not saying that this combo is bad, but I'm sure it's a better match with the 70-350
Acabo de vender mi sony 70-350 y me he comprado el sigma 100-400! Es una bestia!
I have just bought this lens to try it on my Sony a6600 as an upgrade for my Sony RX10 IV for wildlife photography. I tested them both on 600mm equivalent only on a static well artificially lit subject (1/200s ISO200) with lots of fine detail do capture standing 9m away and then on the same subject but less well lit (1/200s ISO2500) about 1,8m away. To my surprise Sigma was just barely sharper and contrastier at 1,8m when I truely pixel-peeped but significantly softer at 9m! Less contrast, less sharpness, less in focus shots, more shots blurred due to shake. I even tried to focus manually, but no improvement. With its worse ergonomics, less zoom range, slower burst rate, lack of HFR and lots of rolling shutter is dubious improvement. I use a6600 with other lenses - a trinity of ultrafast EF zooms with magnificent results. But buying this Sigma lens is another $1000, whereas I bought RX10 IV used for roughly the same price. Is it possible that I made some user error trying this lens out? Or is it that Sony RX10 IV is that good? But it is so hassle-free experience despite its inherent limitations, with no room for user-error. Have you maybe tried the Sony RX10 IV?
Could you also please review the L-mount version as well? Maybe attached to the S5 perhaps?
This particular version is of no interest to me as the only system cameras I use are Canon APS-C DSLRs. But I do find the EF version tempting, and I might want it if I didn’t already own the Sigma 150-600 C which gives me a 240-960mm equivalent focal range. And for birds you can never have to much reach, especially in a zoom.
The difference between the Sigma and Sony GM in terms of light is only a third of a stop. That's certainly noteworthy, however I'm not convinced it's as much of a real world difference as this video suggests.
I think the reason for paying 2.5x for the GM is more about AF performance and build quality than DOF or amount of light - it's a more reliable tool for the pro photographer that can't afford to miss the shot.
This is very helpful. I have the a6400 camera (my only camera), and I'm looking at which zoom lens to purchase - this one or the Sony 70-350mm. I tried and ruled out the equivalent Tamron lenses. Since I am looking to travel a bit with it, maybe the Sony over this one. But I also want to take a lot of photos of the moon, so the extra reach on the Sigma is good. Ultimately, I want to try out each lens before purchasing.
I am still waiting for some compact primes 300, 400 and 500mm !

Great!!! i have the a6000 and the a7r3 most of the time i prefer the use on the a6000 due the 600mm range with amazing results!, great investment if in the future you wish to maje the jump to a full frame camera, this lens will be in your arsenal for the jump to FF, greetings!

Gordon, thanks for uploading this. I have the 70-350mm and there were moments where I wished for the extra zoom for bird photos. But at the same time unsure if the f4.5 to f5.0 difference would matter? In the forest or woods I found that sometimes the low lighting condition made my APS-C camera struggle to capture sharp images. Pls do a comparison between the two lens and what is that small tripod you have at the end?
There's barely any difference between f4.5 and f5, but also barely any difference between 350 and 400mm, so i think you'd be spending a lot for minimal difference. I would recommend waiting and saving for the Sony 200-600 which will give you a significant boost.

Great video, It would be great if you could review this same lens on a full frame, like the A7C, and then again with the camera in crop mode to get to the 600mm range. Love your vids

@@cameralabs I did, that's the one where you compared it to the Sony 100-400. Looking for a zoom, but I'm having trouble deciding because I'm out of the norm.... I don't use the camera for pictures. As a small youtuber I use it for video, so my current camera is full frame (Sony A7C) but it only has a 24MP sensor, so in crop mode I'm looking at about 10MP. I was thinking of buying the sony 70-350 and using it on my camera in crop all the time as that lens is not FE. But I found your video on 100-400 Sigma and was intrigued. I wonder how well it would do for video. Its for cars racing around a track, I like to zoom in, so fast moving.
@@cameralabs I'm just looking for a good zoom for video for cars going around a track, so the most important is good autofocus, and lightweight as I do everything handheld, Image quality does not have to be perfect.
@@GarageKing it'll be hard for any lens to continuously AF on a racing car during video. For photos, it's easy, but for for video it can be slower.
@@cameralabs Thanks for the reply, I really would not use the zoom often as its only when I'm out at a race (which is not too often), I think I may experiment with the Sony 70-350 designed for APSC and use my camera in crop mode. It's only going to be 10MP, but for video on RUclips I think it will be fine. Biggest thing is really how light this lens if for freehand. Worst case I sell it, and get a FE lens. I think I recall you saying the closest focusing distance was much better on the Sony 100-400 than the sigma, presume a crop sensor body would make no difference to this?
How is the AF tracking on the Sigma 100-400 vs the Sony 70-350? I like the fact the Sigma can adapt 1.4 and 2x teleconverters. thinking about changing to that. I have the 70-350. Thank you

It's a fine question but one that's quite difficult to answer. If you're shooting fast sports or wildlife, I find the AF on the Sony to be better overall, but the Fujifilm lens is optically very good. So I'd say it depends how you want to use it.

I like the 70-350 on my A6400, but it's pushing the limit on weight with that small body. If this Sigma is twice the weight, I think that's too unbalanced.

I actually have both lenses. I find my self using the Sigma more for the reach, but if I know 200 will be enough, I'll go for the 70-200,

I’ve always been a fan of using full frame lenses on a crop sensor body. Super helpful having extra reach in football & basketball etc when I can’t afford the bigger lenses :)
Not to mention you get a sharper image due to only using the centre of the lens
I order a sigma 100 400mm dg dn c for my sony a6400. I purchased this lens after going through so many reviews including yours .But when I start using the lens I'm getting some issues with the sharpness of the lens . Even though I'm getting much more clarity and sharpness with my sony 18 135 mm lens . It feels like the lens I got from Amazon ( digital goja ) was a pre production model. What's your opinion about my issues I'm facing, can I solve this. Is there any firmware update for the lens . My sony a6400 is version 2.

Unless it's actually not focusing properly, firmware is unlikely to make a difference, but do check if the Sigma lens has an update. Otherwise, compare your results to mine and if yours are falling short and aren't due to subject error, then maybe change it.
I do compared yours with mine. I'm getting a keep rate less than 30% . Mainly when I shoot cats it's very soft

Unfortunately no. I've searched for the answer to that as well and was quite disappointed to find out they're not compatible. Moreover, Sigma is not planning on releasing it's own version any time soon (they did for the L-mount though). Shame.

@@JessDemant They have no choice, actually. I've found a statement online that says Sigma's license agreement with Sony on producing lenses does not involve anything about the converters. In other words, they can't produce those even if they want to. And, based on your comment, you can figure out why it is so...

Excellent review! Great Lens! But in my specific case there is no reason to migrate from my GH5 / EM1iii + Lumix 35-100 f2.8 + PanaLeica 100-400 + Olympus 300 f4 sets to an APSC + Sigma set.

This is what i like about Sigma, from Wikipedia: "All Sigma products are produced in the company's own Aizu factory in Bandai, Fukushima, Japan"
The location of manufacture often varies depending on where a particular product is sold, so just because my sample was made in Japan, others may not. Having visited many factories over the decades I've been a journalist, I also find the standard is set by the manufacturer, not the location, so any objection to or preference of certain regions is more about politics or workforce practices than actual quality control.

@@Biosynchro Gordon's answer still stands. It could be that his lens (sold in the UK) is made in one place, while someone else's lens bought in another region might be made in another locations. Sigma probably produces everything in Japan, but you cannot say the same for all the lenses he tests. And if that information cannot be consistently and accurately delivered, better leave it out altogether.

It doesn't give longer range. Why say things like this? It doesn't have some extra zoom power because the sensor is smaller. It just has a more narrow field of view.
A narrower field of view effectively gives a longer equivalent reach. It's all about the end result.
You have more pixels on a far away subject (unless you're comparing to the A7rIV), I'd say that gives it a longer range. I would never use a 24mp FF camera with a 100-400mm for wildlife but I would absolutely use a 24mp APS-C camera with a 100-400mm.
