    I'd love to see a comparison between this lens and the Sony 70-350mm OSS lens on APSC cameras...

    • @richardpcrowe
      @richardpcrowe 3 года назад +2

      I shot for years with the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens on a Canon 7D Mark 2 Camera and loved the capabilities (especially the ability to add a 1.4x TC to the combination and achieve an equivalent 224-896mm focal range (that is absolutely mind boggling)...
      However, I didn't use it as much as I thought I would because of the size and weight. I decided not to purchase either the 100-400mm or 200-600mm Sony when I switched over to Sony gear. Instead, I decided to rent one of those lenses for the few times I needed that focal range.
      However, when Sony introduced the 70-350mm lens which weighs only 625g to mount on my A6400 which weighs only 403g, I picked up one of these. I have an equivalent 105-525mm lens on an APSC camera which totals out to just over a kilo for the package... No problem that I cannot use this lens on a full frame camera since I always shot the 100-400mm mounted on my crop sensor 7D Mark-2...

    • @rutaemilija8653
      @rutaemilija8653 3 года назад

      It purely depends on a) how important the weight is. B) are you planning to upgrade to full frame in the next 2 years? If you answer no and yes go with the sigma. Otherwise, you need to figure out which is more important as while every lens has a resale value its never near close to the initial price of any lens. I will say this balanced on something like an a6400 would be a tad awkward. You'd need to be prepared to brace it with how you hold it and carry the weight (consider how you shoot. I carry all the weight on my back for long days and I saved weight with EVERY piece in my kit to be able to pack something like this). In my experience, full frame glass usually delivers better quality so if you can do without the wide end of the zoom range by packing another lens (and you have capacity to swap between while shooting) I'd go for the sigma. Hope this helps.

    I’m glad to see a competitor to the popular native 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 GM. The loss of a 1/3rd of an f-stop seemed negligible, I was interested in how it would handle performance wise and whether it would be an acceptable alternative. I’d love to see a comparison vid down the line!
    If I were to travel and bring only two lenses, I’d assume this would be a fantastic option alongside a nifty fifty or maybe the 24-105 if nighttime isn’t an issue

      Me too. Both are very similarly priced and have near similar focal range. Which performs better on an APS-C is going to determine my choice; as Sony 70-350 is around 500g lighter than this.

      I use 70-350 interchangeably on A6400 and A7iii. Not only is 70-350 lightweight, it also offers FF coverage at wide end and only 1.2x crop at long end, which is no issue when shooting 4k30p on A7iii.

      @@pankajvermacs they dont have similar range on a apsc camera. its a full frame lense. meaning it will have way more reach than the 70-350 becuase that is the apsc lens. maybe against the 70-300 full frame setup.

    For my 100-400mm SIGMA E, I purchase an iSHOOT $49 (Aug 2021) collar from AMAZON. Works perfectly and allows for 90-deg rotation if you wish to take both portrait & Landscape orientations (not sure why? but who am I to ask...LOL) Nice build. Stout. And fits perfectly once aligned with the silicon gasket off the SIGMA. I have a lot of self-teaching to do to get familiar with this lens before heading to MT-WY-SD country but I do plan to bring it with me, weight or not... Cheers!

    Hey, thanks for this great review! I love Sigma and I love zooming. When I looked at the size for me it's just a bit too long for international traveling. I think this lens is wonderful for birding and athletic events. However, with good seats at a stadium I've found that a zoom to 200mm works quite well. There are smaller lenses, I believe by Sigma, cheaper, that go to 300mm and would probably work a bit better for me. Thanks, again!

    I had the sigma 100-400. It was great but I ultimately gave it up for the tampon 50-400 which has many of the same benefits with the extra 50mm on the wide end. If you are tracking young kids, and are not sure how close they will get, the 50-100 range can be quite useful. Otherwise, I found the two lenses very similar in performance in all other respects.

    Hey Dunna. I just got the lens 2 days ago. It's currently on sale for $849. What a steal. Anyway, I've been shooting handheld in my back yard. This lens auto focuses as well as any of the Sony lenses that I own. The images are amazingly sharp and I am very pleased. Also the colors are very rich. I can't see spending $2,500 for the Sony GMaster.

      @choti001 3 года назад +2

      I tried both. I kinda liked 200-600 better. It's heavier but felt well balanced. It's noticeably longer but zooms and focuses internally, so no focus creep, or dust intrusion. It only takes 90 degrees turn to zoom from 200-600, which i thought to be a really thoughtful design. AF was snappy, almost instant on my A7R IV. I came away deeply impressed. On the other hand, for Sigma, I agree everything that's said on this video. It's lighter, more discreet (will draw lesser attention than the Sony), and more affordable. Dustin Abbot also did a comparison in between Sigma to Sony GM 100-400 where Sigma performed really well. However, I felt that Sony 200-600 was really well designed and there aren't many lenses like that. It gave me GAS after 5 mins trying the lens. I love Sigma lenses but this time, Sony really hit all the points for me... However, your experience may be different..

    I've pre-ordered one for my A7 riii. I spend about 1/3 of my photography time shooting surf action from the beach. I currently use a Sony 70 - 300 in crop mode for extra reach. I tried a Sigma 150 - 600C and it was too darn big and heavy for an enjoyable photography experience, so sold it on to a friend. Was about to bite the bullet on the Sony 100 - 400 GM when this came out....looks smaller, lighter and more fun, not to mention the huge cost saving. I hope Sigma bring out the teleconverter in Sony mount too.

    • @dunnadidit

      Thats a tough call since the sony 70-350 is designed specifically for aps-c so you might get better quality from it. If you're ever planning to go full frame, the sigma might make sense, but if not, the sony might still be the way to go.

      No! I grab this lens 9/10 when I contemplate either it or the 70-200. The difference between 70 and 100 isn’t much but the difference between 200 and 400 is double! It’s a much wider range!

  • @misterx6209

  • @BrianHallmond
    @BrianHallmond 3 года назад

    I have a Canon and a Sony. Both crop.
    I got a 70-200mm 2.8 for my canon, because it's soooo much cheaper than my Sony options.
    But that zoom distance for Wildlife, just isn't quite enough. And I prefer my Sony to my canon a LOT more. (Newer model with better features)
    So I'm trying to find more affordable zoom lenses like this for my Sony. It's a bummer it's not a 2.8, but its double the zoom.

    Thanks for the great review! I shoot wildlife (birds and mammals) with my A6500 (or backup A6000). A couple of years ago I found a killer deal on a used Tamron 150-600mm and use the Sony A to E adapter (A6500 does not need the translucent mirror). The focus is still not as predictable as I would want when panning and the resolution drops through the glass, but the major issue is weight! It is luggable and I do handhold it until my hand cramps up. I would hate to give up the extra 300 mm (200 times 1.5) unless the optics were better than what I have now. How would you compare the two lenses using my APSC? Thanks!

    I've been thinking of getting the Nikon F Mount version for my Nikon Z7 as then I can use it in BOTH Full Frame and DX APS-C Crop mode on it. I think it would be awesome having the ability to zoom in to either 400 mm in FF or 600 mm in APS-C as you can switch modes right in camera with the Nikon Z system, plus even on APS-C on the Z7 I would still get a 24 megapixel photo which is still lots of resolution and size if I need to crop the photo.

      @@mikebray48 I have a Sigma 100-400 for the Nikons's F mount and this works very well. I think that it was a very good buy. I see that every movie on the RUclips forces mirror less cameras and mirror less versions of lenses. I just bought a Nikon D7500 a few months and I must say that this is a very good camera. Switching to mirror less was to expensibe for me. Ergonomics of Nokon D7500 is great, instead of this I found on Sony APS-C (A6000 series). When I took A6400 and A6500 to my hand I feel like a small child with a toy. I prefer real cameras, so the decision was to take Nikon D7500 instead of Sony A6400.

    Any concerns with it only being weather sealed at the mount? Think it would be problematic if used in windy, dusty areas? I would like to get it for surfing pics, but the lack of weather sealing, as compared to the sel70350, concerns me. • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад

      Basically, if you know that you’re going to be focusing on something closer, you can switch it from the full “throw” of the focus to a shorter segment. And the same if you know you’re focusing on something further away. Basically it will only focus between the parameters on the switch. It just allows you to get more precise focusing with your focus ring since the ring is now only covering a shorter distance. Hopefully that makes sense. I pretty much always left it on the full range mode.

    Man, the more I hear about this lens, the more it makes me want to get it; especially for Sony APS-C since you have that magnification effect with a field of view of 150-600mm (full frame equivalent). It's significantly cheaper, smaller and lighter than the Sony GM (now of course that lens is a professional one and therefore gives sharper images....) But hey, for the price, the performance of the Sigma seems insane! I saw the comments about the Sony 70-350mm (and I'm a complete beginner in photography by the way) but personally I wouldn't pick it I don't think. Because I would be looking for a decent telephoto lens for bird photography, the extra range awarded by the full-frame lens on an APS-C body would really do wonders for me. I mean .... 350mm is good enough for bird photography, but I feel like it's the minimum and seems pretty limited/limiting... At least I know I could go really far with the Sigma 100-400mm (150-600mm equivalent on APS-C which is insane)! Again all depends on your uses for a telephoto lens, maybe 350 is enough for you, but for me, for bird photography, it might be a bit short of a zoom range I reckon. But hey, maybe I'm wrong: is there another lens you would recommend for the use I described? I would be glad to hear about it ahah! ;) Great review as always Dunna. Thanks again, keep up the great content and stay safe out there everyone!
