Great review! I recently bought an a6100 with 2 kit lenses brought it home and after doing more research, returned it and bought the a6400 and Tamaron 17-70 f2.8. Then I wanted a longer telephoto lens and bought the Sony 70-350 brought it home and after doing more research, returned it and bought the Sigma 100-400 with regrets. The 17-70 is glued to my a6400 for street, portraits, landscape (although the Rokinon 12mm f2.0 is on my radar for this), even macro.
I have the sony a6600 camera and bought the camera for its compact size. This sigma lens is simply to big, heavy, and long for my apsc camera plus creating a loss of image due to the lens being full frame. Instead, for APSC cameras I so strongly recommend the Sony 70-350mm g lens. The sony lens is much smaller, lighter, shorter, and specifically for apsc since it is that type of lens. I used it for the firs ttime on a trip to San Diego/zoo, and was so impressed with the image quality. The lens is 1 year old and can be had for under $900, and even cheaper with discounts through major venders (I got the lens for $660). Again, can't recommend the 70-350mm enough. Note that for APSC cameras such a lens actually has an equivalent full frame reach of over 500mm, is image stabilized, has a lock, etc!
I have the Sony 100-400mm GM but I went and bought this Sigma. The Sony lens is lovely but the weight…. I tend to reach for the Sigma when I know I’ll be spending several hours outdoors to photograph wildlife. Great and accurate review. Thanks! 👍🏼
ChristianDeme The GM is way superior in that aspect, as well as being sharper in lower light situations. But for me, I really like that the Sigma is so much lighter in weight. I won’t be selling my GM lens; I’m keeping both.
if wild life is moving, the Sony 100-400mm GM is a better lens. The autofocus on this lens is not good for moving subjects, still shots are ok. you can reference this video -> ruclips.net/video/eDw6FeE1QKM/видео.html
I think only OSS mode 2 turns off IBIS, while mode 1 will keep both on. At least that's what i got from watching another video, though i don't own the lens myself.
I’ve ordered one today. Waiting for it to arrive now. Looking forward to get some footage of the surfers whilst their all on these big winter swells at the mo. Also birds and any other wildlife I see.
Bought the L-Mount one for my SL2. I'm pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I have the 100400GM for my Sony a7R3 and didn't want another deep-dive for what's essentially a duplicate. I like it. And that plastic? I call it 'Carbonite' 'cuz it's not cheap feeling.
Great review, I have this lens on order to add to my Tamron E-mount zoom trinity fro my A7RIII. Can't wait for that extra reach! All 3 Tamrons are go to lenses for me depending what I'm doing.
I just got my a6400 about 2 months ago. I only have the kit 18-135. I am looking at the viltrox 23mm f1.4 or the sigma 30mm f1.4. I want a good zoom so I’d totally consider this lens down the road. I need a good wide angle for some client videos. I sold all my canon t3i and all the lenses I had which I used for years.
I'd love to see how it compares with new Tamron 70-300 for quality, I don't feel the sigma is as sharp as I would expect, and the Tamron may be close competitor despite slightly different focal lengths
Just ordered, 838 at amazon:). Batis 40 mm does not leave my camera , still keeping tamy 28-75 for versatility . The only reason I would trade the batis will be if sony release a 35 1.4 gm/g
Know anything about the sigma 150-600mm contemporary lens? I just bought it for surf videography but haven’t tested it out yet. Not sure if I made the right choice.
How does this compare to the sony 70-350 G in the same price range? I looking for something to video and shoot motorsports in my a6400. Stabilization and focus speed is important in this situation I think. Great review.
When I was a Nikon shooter, I had almost entirely Tamron glass - Tamron SP glass was(is) awesome and doesn't cut many corners. When I switched to Sony, I had to go back to brand glass - I was not (and still am not) happy with Tamron's game plan of "as-small-as-possible-as-light-as-possible-and-sacrifice-just-about-everything-with-no-external-buttons/switches" mentality. I think Sigma has a good middle ground mentality and more "traditional" design. It's in the back of my mind to start trying Sigma. This could be the first (Christmas present for my wife?) - uh oh, hope my wife doesn't read this.
That's interesting because Tamron seems to have hit a home run with their Sony lenses. Considering the absurd level of customizable buttons in Sony cameras, they were one of the first (and continue to be one of the top) brands to offer high-quality optics at prices half that or less of native lenses. The 70-180, 17-28 and 28-75 are some of the highest praised lenses for Sony for their value, some of which are sharper than $2500 Sony lenses.
@@RohannvanRensburg I actually completely agree, and that might seem to contradict my original comment - but I own almost all the Tamron E-mount glass - well, actually it's my wife's main stuff, for all the reasons that Tamron designed them for. She likes the light weight, the compactness, and the value. And I couldn't agree more that that is what the lenses offer - It's quality, well-performing, very affordably priced glass from Tamron. I even use it at times. But for me, the sacrifices that Tamron made to get it all those selling factors aren't for me for my main kit. I want external AF/MF switch and more traditional (and more used) focal lengths, and I would love Tamron's oh-so-good VC in focal lengths out past 100mm (I'll politely argue all day long on the benefits of having a 3+2 image stabilization over a 5 IBIS at longer focal lengths) . Tamron's love of the 28mm starting/ending FL is tough for me, which really is just simply caused by their choice to make it compact and all have the same 67mm filter thread - which is another sacrifice that didn't need to be made IMHO. And other than the Sony 24-70GM (which I no longer own), I feel the Sony stuff in real world application just outperforms the Tamron stuff (which is fine, like you said, it's twice or even three times as much). That said, I'm feeling like Sigma's E-mount line is more fitting of a direct comparison to the Sony stuff and am finding it really, really good. I picked up the lens in question here (the 100-400), as well as the Sigma 24-70mm and the 85mm f/1.4 - and now my Sony 100-400GM and 85 f/1.8 now collect dust (lol, the 100-400GM isn't used as often because of it's size). I just like Sigma's more traditional approach of "slightly smaller, high quality, traditional features, at half the price" mentality. I totally get Tamron's approach, as it appeals to the mainstream price-point and does so with great performance (and it was needed at the time to help move people into Sony mirrorless, which to be honest was probably a main reason for Tamron's crazy initial success - they were offering something no one else was offering - affordable Sony zooms) - but if Tamron ever decided to come out with an SP line that was more inline with Sigma's philosophy, I'd switch my thinking. But I'm still buying Tamron either way - just picked up the 70-300 - because my wife loves them.
@@MOMENTSbyRonSonedecker Well said, can't really argue there. I have the 28-75 and while I like it, the 4mm difference between 28 and 24 is indeed annoying, while the 5mm at the 70 end doesn't make much difference. I again think the 70-300 looks like a great lens for the pricepoint but if the cost were closer to the Sigma I would likely be in favour of that. In my case I just don't think I need what the Sigma is offering for my intended applicaiton and would rather spend the extra cash on primes (might change my mind down the road, who knows), but I do think the Tamron 70-300 would have been better served by obvious and easy to implement features like a lens lock. I also can't argue against what you're saying about Sigma being a same-class competitor for Sony. Many of Sony's lenses are absurdly expensive and with somewhat outdated tech (slower AF, not as sharp, etc), so it's about time.
@@RohannvanRensburg Agreed. The new Tamaron 17-70 f2.8 is glued to my a6400. Outstanding performance across the board, auto focus✔️, stabalization✔️, weather sealed✔️, versatile focal range✔️, and of course, incredible image quality‼️
I am a pro photographer, I just bought this lens for some school sports work coming up. So I went to a little league game to test out the image quality, etc. Pictures look just ok, admittedly shooting with an tele-zoom is a skill that requires development, so I will do some more practice shoots. The big drawback, which may turn out to be a show stopper is focus capture. Not good. At all. I shoot with a Sony A7 IV, which has really good focus capture, but this lens is not a Sony. Just for perspective, and again, first time using the lens, in a very challenging environment... I got maybe 50% of my images tack sharp... maybe. I'll keep working with it, but I may end up biting the Sony bullet for the 200-400mm F4.5 5.6 GM OSS which I've read has great focus capture capability, but at a price premium ... like almost $1k more than the Sigma here..... More to come...

So as a wedding photographer - rather this with the possibility to shoot some awesome outdoor stuff or rather the tamron 70-180 f2.8 because indoor weddings are a pain?
For wedding photography, you need a wide range of focal points to capture the day. Ideally, a standard zoom lens, wide angle lens, telephoto lens, and prime lens would be great!

No this isn’t overkill for the Aps-C. I just picked one up for $250 to go along with my a6600 and WOW is it amazing. Us aps-c users are lucky cause it changes the magnification from a full frame camera, the range is 150-600mm for aps-c cameras !

@@OttoJulian_ Thanks for your reply, it does look very much like it, but taking a closer look at the video to compare it with the Geekoto, I read MeFoto, so searching for the Geekoto on Google, somehow I got the MeFoto Q1 Roadtrip as a suggestion, which I think is the same Sidney is using.
@@skyPixMX Yes you are right, it does say Mefoto! and I just saw it on amazon named as "MeFoto Roadtrip", there are many colors to choose from! Good job!
The G Master lens is equivalent to an Art lens so it's not that comparable with the sigma. But the 200-600 G lens kind of is.... and for the extra $800 you get 200mm extra, snappier AF, no extending barrel, better weather sealing. If your in the market for a good budget super tele this sounds like a great option....but if you have a few extra dollars the 200-600 would be better value for money...imho... Great review tho!
Instead of wasting the $800 on the 200-600, just buy a cheap a6000 aps-c camera for half that price and then the equivalent zoom range would be 150-600mm!!
Yep, it seems like a great deal compared to others but as a teen it’s still really Expensive XD So I should study well so when I grow older I can afford and buy the things I need and want :D
@@bjure8111 I didn't buy a new lens yet. What focal range did you lose sharpness. I'm pretty sure that was a mistake you put. Maybe your lens was defective. My lens is sharp throughout the focal range, even on my A7Rii. I just want to replace it with a FF lens, I'm just not in too much of a hurry since it's just a want, and not a need.
Any main reason? I get sharpness. But a lot of these zooms at similar apertures are taking just as high quality pics minus the aperture speed. But landscape and 95% of our use it makes sense. Unless you shoot paid and indoors I don't see why primes are your only choice
every single time i look at photos taken with this lens by different photographers the pictures always look atrocious. you get what you pay for and that saying happens to be true with this lens

@@nelsonsharma1479 have you tried VN? It's not perfect but wow, you can do a lot.
@@evilpigskin Thanks for the suggestion
Ela é compatível com a cânon sl2?
I've been searching a tripod like the orange one that you show on many of your videos, where can I find it? Greetings from Mexico
it looks like the Geekoto carbon fiber. I would post the link for you but I don't think I can do that
@@OttoJulian_ Thanks for your reply, it does look very much like it, but taking a closer look at the video to compare it with the Geekoto, I read MeFoto, so searching for the Geekoto on Google, somehow I got the MeFoto Q1 Roadtrip as a suggestion, which I think is the same Sidney is using.
There isn’t a way to use the lens’s stabilization in conjunction with Sony’s ibis?
There isnt with any lenses that have OS built in. Can’t use both at the same time... I think it would give a wobbly image...
I will get the Sony 100-40mm GM lens when I sell my kidney
Ha still running the a6300 and sigma 16mm
Great combo still!
Canon R6 .?
Beast lens!
IT REALLY IS!!!
Could you do a portrait session with it?
Dang! That’s Expensive! :O
(Edit: Looks really Worth it)
Not compared to the other telephoto zoom lenses with similar quality! It’s actually a good deal
Yep, it seems like a great deal compared to others but as a teen it’s still really Expensive XD So I should study well so when I grow older I can afford and buy the things I need and want :D
@@SidneyDiongzon could you maybe do a comparison between this sigma 100-400mm and the sony 70-350mm ?
I want it...
It's amazing!
16 35 f2.8 and 85mm 1.4
Love that lens!
Right now I have the Sony 70-350 APS-C lens, but I may look into trading that out for this one.
How did it end up? I'm about to do the same. Sent back my 70-350, my sample was not sharp over 50m. In real close distances it was really sharp.
Its like jbl speaker
Good Video
Glad you enjoyed
What about price ? It's 6.3 at 400mm, not 2.8 + stabilized, 1k bucks not so cheap 🙂
$849 right now on B&H
I do not like zoom lenses !!! I hope that we soon will see compact primes of 300mm (4.0, 4.5 and 5.6), 400mm (4.5 and 5.6) and 500mm 5.6
Any main reason? I get sharpness. But a lot of these zooms at similar apertures are taking just as high quality pics minus the aperture speed. But landscape and 95% of our use it makes sense.
Unless you shoot paid and indoors I don't see why primes are your only choice
@@hercules71185 primes are much lighter than zooms. Weight is an important criteria. Plus you get a brighter lens.
"HOPE I DONT GET DEMONITIZED".......................LMFAO🌈
That tower is being contaminated by frequencies almost like microwaving the water... Gross.
every single time i look at photos taken with this lens by different photographers the pictures always look atrocious. you get what you pay for and that saying happens to be true with this lens
0:42 "Sigma isn't sponsoring this video...". No, they just sent you a $1k lens to 'check out'. Got it ;-|
Which I can say whatever the hell I want about the product. K? Bye
@@SidneyDiongzon Yeah, but don't pretend you aren't motivated to be very favorable to the lens they sent you, because otherwise it will be the last thing they ever send you to review. Want to be taken seriously? Review stuff you get yourself, not freebies. BTW, your review sucked, technically speaking. K? Bye!
