Lyrics
Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Lovers, they may 'cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
Stand up and be counted
Don't be ashamed to cry
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day
Herald what your mother said
Readin' the books your father read
Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time
Some may have more cash than you
Others take a different view
My oh my heh, hey...
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
Don't ask no questions, it goes on without you
Leaving you behind if you can't stand the pace
The world keeps on spinning
You can't stop it, if you try to
This time it's danger staring you in the face
Oh oh oh
Remember
Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Lovers, they may cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
My oh my heh, hey, hey
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
This song feels like a genuine hug from someone who wants you to be okay

The 90's wasn't a decade. It was an emotion.
👏🔥
Yes.
Couldn't have phrased it any better. The 90's just FELT real.
Underrated comment gentleman. ")
I agree with you. Where is the music now? I don't know. How can you not be empowered every day when you are listening to this while going to work ?
We were so happy in the 90's but we weren't aware of it
People tend to get only aware of something being good if they don't have it anymore.
Never truer words spoken.
So true.
We were sad about different things, but time makes you remember the good times more.
Power of nostalgia
When I’m feeling depressed this track uplifts me 🔥🔥

Me too. I struggle with depression for years and my negative thoughts about things but I gotta listen to positive things like this to keep my sanity and focus.

Mom passed away when I was 9. We used to sing this in the car. I’m 35 now. I can still here her singing.
... and she'll always be there, singing this song with you.

May she rest in peace. Take care of yourself.
Keep smiling baby. Mom is right there by your side 🥰🥰

People don't understand how much of a powerful impact music like this has on kids!! I come from a crazy family in Africa and suffered from depression from a very young age...i can remember when I was around 8 how nice this song would make me feel...cause it was positive and such good advice, something I lacked getting as a child. I disowned my whole family and now stay I'm the USA and have a family of my own. Im now 30 and still looooove this song so much wish Des'ree knew how far her beautiful song brought me❤

I’m sure it probably has to be one of the hardest things you’ve ever had to handle. I hope you’re able to one day come to terms with that in your own way and find yourself in your new life without his being a part of it. So many hundreds of thousands of people are out there going through feeling similar to yours. Sometimes it helps me to remember that at the hardest times in my life, I’m not the only person who is feeling what I feel. You know? It can help to remember that you’re not alone.
Sending you my best wishes and hopes for you and everyone who was left behind after his passing, from one human to another. 💕

Can I please give you some advise, from the heart? I know how you feel but the moment you stop focussing on finding a suitable partner, and focus on different things, like...anything you're good at, like painting or learning something new or paragliding for all I care. The minute you don't care anymore how other people perceive you, you'll meet someone.
It happened to me that way, twice. Somehow people have a "nose" for someone that looks too hard.

Not even close to the 70's. Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Issac Hayes, Spinners, Ojays, Con Funk Shun, Rose Royce, Earth Wind & Fire, Heatwave, The Jones Girls, Sister Sledge, Lakeside, Chic, Chicago, ToTo, Bobby Caldwell, Roy Ayers-Everybody Loves The Sunshine, Hall & Oates, The Emotions, Lenny Williams, Patrice Rushen, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Teddy Pendergrass & Stephanie Mills. I could name thousands more on the R&B and Soft Rock Side, Micheal McDonald & The Doobie Brothers, Carly Simon, The Carpenters. Smdh. And these Artists wrote, produced ans sang and played instruments. Where are most of the 90's Artist now, most of them are retired. While the 70's Artists played til death are still performing like Pattie Labelle, Phil Collins, Gladys Knight and James Taylor, Phillip Bailey

Well said.
It's OUR fault why this type of music isn't promoted. It can be brought back, WE just have to do it.
Not really. When it comes to pop culture, including music, trends are decided by a handful of people, like producers and executives (the latter were, previously, mainly from record labels, but nowadays from online library services like spotify or deezer). During the time of concentrated means of recording (prior to the internet, that is, the time of big record labels) the sheer volume of promotion on radios was the deciding factor of what became popular. Nowaday anyone can record and publish their work online, but to get acknowledged by the masses most rely on either popular playlists on spotify etc., or going viral through short videos that take a few viral worthy secs of songs. In the end, safe for a few exceptions, what gets promoted is decided by small groups of people, it has always been. Individuals can have different preferences and demand different things, but there isn't any cohesion in society to form a significant movement that can actually cause any influence in what gets promoted.
How right you are!
The music we consume now is kind of prove of decline of this society ..
What would the world do without WAP 😂😂😂
We need somebody to explode on the scene and completely change music and culture. They only come around once a generation.

Derrick Jackson I know you commented this two whole months ago, but just want to let you know reading this comment made me shed a tear. I’m a few years younger than you, but am in my twenties, I was born and partially raised in Chicago. Channel 11, is where I first heard this song. Same with the Over the Rainbow. I remember the programming block with Arthur, Wishbone, Between the Lions, etc. And it really takes me to a state of serenity, of a child’s imagination. A colorful place I guess. It’s three in the morning and I don’t live in Chicago anymore, haven’t for 13 years, but that is by far one of my most beautiful memories in an otherwise sort of strange childhood. To add perspective to the reality of just how fast tine truly does go, in 1999, I was in my freshman year in college. This song came out around 1993-1994 between my 7th and 8th grade years in middle school. I am 44 right now.
The CD had only come out a few years prior so we were still operating largely on the cassette tape. I remember keeping a blank tape in my tape recorder, queued up so I wouldn't miss the first few seconds of the song. If I wasn't near my recorder, I'd miss sobe. But I made every effort to record this song the moment the radio DJ announced it would be on the next set. I still have that cassette tape packed away sonewhere in a box. Comically, I have no equipment to play the tape today.
STILL Encourages Me in 2020.., who’s with me?❤️🌞
Here today, October 1, 2020 🙏🏽✨💖
Whoop whoop!
Yes!!

Same here, mate. Same here❤️
This song is the timeless classic to comfort u during rough time.
Yasss!!!
I am an Indian and now lives in India but 28 years ago, when I visited USA for the first time, I listened this song "You Gotta be" on way to home from Airport in a cab radio and since then it's my inspiration to do the things. Whenever I feel loenly or nervous, I surely listen this song that gives me energy to do the things.
🙏
Sending you love wherever you may find yourself in this big but oh so small world ❤
This song got me through the 90s.
That's how beautiful my childhood was, the music was great, therapeutic, and building.
Such a beautiful woman.. Such a beautiful song...
icebluelu 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌
This song always helped me when I was really little. We went on a lot of road trips and my parents fought everywhere all the time. It would always play at the perfect moment when they'd stop fighting and be in a sad bitter silence. Her voice was like a hug when I needed it.
That is beautiful...I'm sure God sent those hugs. Wish I could hug you right now. Thank you for sharing that 😊
Omg thank you for sharing, that's a really beautiful bittersweet story
Stonedallday, sending u mad love, so glad this song helped you man. Stay mega strong🌸🌸🌸🌸
As a DV survivor of 13 years this song is very uplifting for me ❤stay strong !
Its shocking to witness so many dislikes on a song that delivers meaningful msg. There's nothing really to hate about this song.Hard to believe it's 90s,sounds like it was made today.
+Raisa Cherry probably the modern day kids who cant accept the fact that modern music SUCKS!!!
Raisa Cherry: Indeed!...And that's an issue for debate...from a few years back and up until now, I've been noticing the same trend here on RUclips, in many videos!...Why is that for?!...It sure is a bit awkward, regarding the fact that these are definitely superior songs to the average shity music we are obliged to listen to nowadays!...
M Sanne so true!!!
+dai suke Nice 2 meet u :)
+dai suke I m also hurt a lil cuz some1 called me bad name. But ignored it.
This song came out in 1994. This song was played on Top 40 radio stations until 2003. The staying power of this song can't be denied.
Heard it in a cookie shop a few days ago. Mad staying power
Just curious, what is your profile picture?
