I saw this group at the felt forum on Thank givings blue 1973 . Miller jammed with Buddy Guy and Junior wells. They smoked out Fly like an Eagle. This is so much better than the commercial version.
Here we have an historic capture of Fly Like An Eagle before it was even recorded. Bass Player and Steve Great;Lyrics Great; and 7 people clicked disliked. It can't be based on the talent here but on something more revolting in their minds.
It's amazing how a song can evolve....this was 3 years before it was actually released and went from this funky psychedelic jam to the smash hit that it became.
Wow, amazing. So much different and BETTER than the album version. Man... awesome. If there are any Clutch fans here, I think you know what I'm thinking.
For me this is one of the best live versions. The spacy sounds from his guitar, funky organ, great drums and offcourse the best bassplayer ever in his band the great Gerald Johnson. So much freedom in his playing, mannnnn that bass is killing me! Beautiful guitar by the way!
Honestly the audience is what makes this the song is great enough🎸🎸 but at 4 minutesthose two guys in that flannel shirt everybody stoned out of their mind 🎸😁😁🧡😎
Steve Miller Band, one of my all time favorites, this version is really original and of more musical quality than the later more comercial versions he used to play.Excelent song ,wonder if everybody understand the lyrics.
Steve miller, in my life"s experience, is that he is one of the greatest guitarist I've ever heard. Also i think he was a great band and always made me happy without narcotics included, people are who they are and no one should blame other things, music, schools, or whatever for how their family are no matter what era. peace, love, joy, SuzeWolf :)
You can't blame the band for your Uncle taking drugs. I'm sorry for the situation he is in and the way your family has to suffer for his actions but the band did not make him do it. It was his own responsibility. I listened to this band and loved them. I'm not on drugs nor do I drink. Lots of people listened to this band and don't take drugs.
I didn't know Steve played the blues harp in the beginning of Livin' In The USA. I wish I could have seen him back in the day, but I was in elementary school when this was done!
Just read an old Guitar Player article that I'd missed about Steve Miller... There's ALOT about the guy I bet people never realized... He freaking GREW UP around LES PAUL and his stage show!!!!!! I really DON'T like alot of his music but when he plays the blues I think he's great. This song is pretty classic too.
Great early Miller. People forget he was making good music b4 The Joker came out and of course Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams....So much more talented than people realize.
This is one awesome vid of the original, uncut version of this track. So helps to understand the full intent of the lyrics. I agree with 45, I love watching the southpaw bass. Thanks for the credits. Would be nice to have the other players listed. Thx so much TrombonesTel...
This is GREAT! ...He states its not even recorded yet...i wonder what the audience thought of its early incarnation. I have to agree with landesart...THIS IS THE VERSION! so much better than the super produced release.
What a find! Steve Miller Band playing this song live, before they recorded it? Outstanding guitar work, of course, and very different from the recorded version's beginning.
@scoma6 Bassist is Gerald Jonson, can't remember the drummer's name. I saw this tour in Cincinnati at Music Hall. I know he did a lot of new material that night.
This is highly EXPLOSIVE stuff and much freer in comparison with the studio shaven down original which has an equal quality of creativity in respect to a true master's musical talent.
Who's the Drummer and Bassist in the vid? ( im only 17) been following SMB since I was 6 but still don't know the members before Les Dudek, Gary Mallaber, and Lonnie Turner
People then that can watch this a not get why Steve Milller was voted into the Guitar's players Hall of Fame-well what can you say? That Steve Miller Band and Fudge(They Only Had a Major Influence On Led ZedZeppelin and Deep Purple) and Steppenwolf and Furs And Motorhead be but 5 NOT in R&R Hall Of Fame while we get the likes of Madonna instead, reveals the R&R Hall of Fame can be ludicrous.
What's wrong with my question ??? I shall give you a break if that's what you want...you seem to be so nervous and ...is there anything wrong in what i said ??? Farewell man ...Love and Peace
my uncle listened to this band in the 80's or whatever and was a junkie. Now he's lives in a nursing home because he wrecked his bike. he was high on something... bad influential band if you ask me...
How about you don't go blaming a band over something your uncle did. Ever think about responsibility? How does a band singing about letting go and being yourself influence your uncle into drugs? If you ask me, your uncle is in his situation because of what HE did. Blame him...

Love the guy in the audience "RIGHT ON" These were the best damn times for music. Imagine seeing this live. Wow.
Just think this group of people and lots of others all over the world haven't yet heard this song until this very moment. History in the making!!!
Gerald Johnson brought a good bass line, energy and cool to anything he played.

Saw Stevie back in '67-'68 in the Be-in's in El Camino Park... He had the Steve Miller Blues Band back then.... Thanks for the Time Machine!
Steve Miller Band, one of my all time favorites, this version is really original and of more musical quality than the later more comercial versions he used to play.Excelent song ,wonder if everybody understand the lyrics.
That Gerald Johnson, another great bass player. Geraln now plays with Dave Mason.

OMG! this takes me back to the first time i saw him in the 70's!! his shows today are still just as great. he never disappoints live.
Great version, the drummer is John King and keyboardist is Dicky Thompson. Steve Miller ROCKS!!!
Steve Miller is the king of classic rock !!!!!
I didn't know Steve played the blues harp in the beginning of Livin' In The USA. I wish I could have seen him back in the day, but I was in elementary school when this was done!

No word can say what it meant to hear this song in those times.
Great early Miller. People forget he was making good music b4 The Joker came out and of course Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams....So much more talented than people realize.
Freakin' Awesome.....Thanks for the clip and I am all over the torrent...Wow!
Somebody give me a cheeseburger! A 1973 live performance by the Steve Miller band of two great classics
This is where I'll be tonight for summerfest. I'm pumped
Holy smokes. That was totally galactic. Thanks for posting. No more magical trips to outer space for me. Too bad
From his fantastic album: Fly like an eagle!
Listen also to the song: Take the money and run.
Great Rock from the '70 s!!!
This is better than the album cuts!! Thanks for posting it.
This is one awesome vid of the original, uncut version of this track. So helps to understand the full intent of the lyrics. I agree with 45, I love watching the southpaw bass. Thanks for the credits. Would be nice to have the other players listed. Thx so much TrombonesTel...
When Steve was at his best, in the '70's, great songs, great playing and a passion for the music.
I saw him live yesterday!
He rocks!
Love watching that bass player... haha, so good.. Seein them in two days!
This is GREAT! ...He states its not even recorded yet...i wonder what the audience thought of its early incarnation. I have to agree with landesart...THIS IS THE VERSION! so much better than the super produced release.
I was born in 2006 in a great taste of music and the steve miller band is one of my favorite bands
What a find! Steve Miller Band playing this song live, before they recorded it? Outstanding guitar work, of course, and very different from the recorded version's beginning.
Very cool to see the early stages of this song take shape!
you'r right - they clap to a different music
Omg iam tripping on the dude damn time flys!
What a great band.
I can't wait to see them in Watertown, NY on 6/30/18!!!!!!!!
@scoma6
Bassist is Gerald Jonson, can't remember the drummer's name. I saw this tour in Cincinnati at Music Hall. I know he did a lot of new material that night.
Thank you !!
@SheriffTankStoner thanks for the bit of triva :)
Steve Miller you are THE dude! :)
Great find
This is highly EXPLOSIVE stuff and much freer in comparison with the studio shaven down original which has an equal quality of creativity in respect to a true master's musical talent.
Those people smile to much! :) :) :) :)
they were all high.
love his songs. just sit down and take the song into ur heart
love the My Dark Hour ending...
Wow, this is cool as shit!!! I didn't know anything like this was out there.
Although the album was released in May of '76, this show preceded the final recording & arrangement, so somewhere in '73 is probably the time frame
If you watch all the way to the end, the copyright date 1973 is clear.
that hippy guitar is cool
Steve miller band they rock great tunes
Yout welcome Alice
Bassist is fucking awesome.
@KowKowCalqulator 1000 percent true, great point!
Yes I would agree, he's all over it.
GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw him raley field sacramento
la vera musica. un'emozione
Great shit! Them folks in the audience were high as fuck!
I've gotta fever, and the only cure is "More Gerald Johnson!"
I saw this same tour- Joker_ at the Felt forum with buddy guy and junior Wells. This was a great Band1!!! Who is the drummer/
The Rhythm section is SLAMMIN to Steve's strippy guitar/vocals....sounded like the Meters playing this tune. great live version!!!
proly the first time they heard this song
@eforce1200 And did you notice how calm they were? Such a stark contrast with alcohol-intoxicated people :')
This is fuckin awesome
Shine on!
man this shit is fuckin gold
I'm not sure if this is 1973....Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976 and reached #1 in 1977...
Exactly what I thought!
I like the album version better for the singing, but the guitar is great
rare....
numeri uno
Diggin SM cool Les Paul...
Those girls at 2.40 must be listening to a different song, because they sure aren't clapping along to this one.

it is 1976, not 1973
Did you not hear, this song had not yet been recorded.
Plus, the copyright date at the end clearly shows 1973.
@landesart
lucky bastage!
great song but the studio version is better
my uncle listened to this band in the 80's or whatever and was a junkie. Now he's lives in a nursing home because he wrecked his bike. he was high on something... bad influential band if you ask me...
the 1 we have now is 1000times better than this virsion..
That bass brother is bad :)
How about you don't go blaming a band over something your uncle did. Ever think about responsibility? How does a band singing about letting go and being yourself influence your uncle into drugs? If you ask me, your uncle is in his situation because of what HE did. Blame him...
"No talent motherfucker." - Miles Davis
too much lsd ???
WEAK!
