    It is always nice to see routes in Waltham Forest as it has a very good infrastructure. It is like a little Netherlands.

    The back to front cycle symbols at 3:00 ish have always baffled me.

      I thought that as well - seems to indicate a two way cycle track but left and right swapped. I did notice he was cycling on the "wrong" side according to the painted symbols but the right way for (UK) convention.

      Oh yes that is weird - it's a two way track there but they seem to have them backwards...

      @@Londoncycleroutes Thanks for that clarification! I'm a Brit/Cdn dual, avid distance cyclist, and have spent time back in the UK in years past cycling, but not for over a decade now. I crave the UK countryside, but have a soft spot still for London, my place of birth. But when following these treks, I'm always fighting to 'release' the ingrained 'software' of cycling on the right to do it on the left. One can get into the 'groove' of it, until seeing exactly what you describe! In a panic, such as seeing that, all sense of having it 'sussed' evaporates. I notice that also with pedestrians on shared sections. Many fail to default to the left. I often set my browser to run half speed so that I can keep my confidence of following established protocol.
      I'm loving these episodes though! I'm seeing more of London than I ever did being there for two extended work sojourns, plus visits. There's a notable difference in cycling infrastructure over the last two decades.

      @@stephensaines7100 this is really interesting, I had a similar issue but opposite when I used to live in brussels haha! I think the backwards symbols are likely just a mistake in this case

      @@stephensaines7100 I read years ago, in the Economist, that the normal behaviour for pedestrians needing to avoid each other in the UK is to move to the right not the left. Which is another reason to take care and ride with consideration in shared spaces.

    I followed the route in my 30 year old A-Z guide. Extensive changes to road layout around Green Road and Church Lane south-west of Leytonstone station.
    Must get a new A-Z!

    I do love Francis Road. Sadly Venner (on the right at 7:05) closed last month, I will need to find somewhere else to buy literally all my gifts.

      It’s a good little high street! I don’t live nearby, does it get quite lively on summer days?

    • @liamness
      @liamness Год назад +1

      @@Londoncycleroutes I think the liveliest it gets is after school letting out time, without the cars it becomes an informal play street of sorts. I don't think I've ever seen large adult gatherings there, which makes sense as there's no bars or pubs there, but I do only go around there maybe once a month.

    Good Evening.
    A while back I made a suggestion that you might consider the odd video starting at Waterloo Station for the non-londoners among us. I haven't visited your work for a while, so I was pleasantly surprised that you have mapped a number of routes from Waterloo. Cheers, much appreciated 👍

    6:13 and the second there is a bit of unprotected bike gutter; obligatory car blocking it.

    Excellent content as always. There is one of our clubs favourite local coffee stop over at the Unity Café which is just a little further up on Grove Green Road after Dyers Hall Road South. Great place to grab a coffee along with a small snack after a club ride/social ride.

    Another reason for using Ashville road is that there's a very annoying intersection that you'd probably be waiting at for quite a few minutes

    The council have just put out to consultation a crossing of High Road Leyton right on the route- should make things much easier.

    Based on your experience Jon, would you say there are fewer cars parked on streets in boroughs which have a good track record on cycle infra and LTNs?

    • @Londoncycleroutes
      @Londoncycleroutes  Год назад +1

      I think it varies a lot- often LTNs are on streets with terraced houses for various historical reasons (eg terraced streets are laid out in ways that are bad for rat running) and terraces tend to have on street parking- so it can look like there are more cars there sometimes. I think councils need to have a good kerbside policy that reallocates space while also giving people other options

    I live in Walthamstow and always avoid cycle lanes wherever possible, on the face of it they are wonderful but in reality they present you with flat segregation to random raised curbs at any given point along their route which have lead to many a cyclist suffering falls including several broken bones myself. I don't want to sound too negative but would urge any rider new to these cycle lanes to take extreme care.
