They touched on serial killers a bit with the music video for the 2011 remake version of Tsumi to Batsu. It features a picture of Albert Fish. The song is about related themes but doesn't mention the term serial killing or Fish.
I should also say Kyo has never had any vocal surgeries. Even many people deeply into Dir en grey think he had at least 1 in the early 2010's. But according to interviews he only took pills. And though the band suspended activities for about a year iirc he said he wasn't resting his voice during that time because he wanted to keep moving forward.
On their most recent album Phalaris (2022) he said that he experimented with singing/doing other things where he would normally scream and so most of the album was softer than their previous works for that reason but I think it was an artistic choice more than anything. For one of his other bands, Petit Brabancon, he still goes very heavy. The vocals sound wild/voice destroying but every performance they've had has been completely flawless so I guess it's not as destructive as it sounds or his voice can just take it.
They have an album called Withering to Death which has a song called Dead Tree - that might be what you were thinking of. They have super soft stuff and super hard stuff on every album though.
More Dir en grey reactions always appreciated :) Or Kyo's other bands.

Since Phalaris came out in 2022, I fear that we might not see another album in at least 2 years... But there is stuff coming out for Kyo's other bands "Petit Brabancon" and "Sukekiyo" I believe
