BMW M’s Secret CSLs You’ve Never Seen Before - Part 1: V8 E46 M3 CSL + M2 CSL | Top Gear

  • Ever since BMW’s M Division started business back in 1972, only three cars have ever officially worn the ‘CSL’ moniker. The original 3.0 CSL everyone of a certain age gets gooey over, the E46-generation M3 CSL that warms the dark heart of the internet, and the latest M4 CSL. However, there were four secret CSL prototypes that never saw the light of a Munich day, at least until now.
In this first of two parts, Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage breaks into BMW’s secret bunker to talk you around two of said CSL prototypes. First up, an E46 M3. “But M already did one of those CSLs,” you cry. Yes, but not one like this. Because this - “a crazy experiment” - packs the V8 from the E39-gen M5 - probably the most lusted-after M5 - which means 400bhp from that 5.0-litre eight-cylinder.
Then there’s the F87 prototype M2 CSL, which featured elements from the M4 GTS and got an uprated engine kicking out 444bhp, bucket seats, a rollover bar, a carbon rear wing and carbon-ceramic brakes. Keep your eyes peeled and don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss part two, the final two cars are pretty mad too.

I remember when the E90 V8 engine was first confirmed for production and everyone, including myself, was like "so what if it makes 100hp more, V8 is going to be too heavy in a 3 series but then the specs showed the all aluminum V8 actually weighs less than the iron block 6... still never felt "ok" tho. I understand that companies need to shake up their designs every once in a while and freshen things up. This new blocky angular design language from bmw is not fresh. It’s obnoxious and rotten. It’s like every terrible car design trend right now has conglomerated into the monstrosity that is bmw design currently.
As time goes on, designs should age well. This new grille I think has actually started to look WORSE.

The engine in the M2 CSL is the N55b30, which is totally different than the S55B30 (share with the M3/M4) found in the M2 CS.
The N55 could not go into production after 2019 as it no longer matched the emission standards being a design from 2011, so the S55 was chosen instead.

The most important CSL ever made but never sadly released was the E60 M5 CSL. A one off factory with a 5.5L S85 making about 585hp mated with the beefed up smooth M-DCT dual clutch transmission instead of the slower SMG. It was the E60 M5 we should have had.

Smg is actually faster than DCT and lighter. The only reason why Bmw moved away from smg is because too many people complaining about smg being too jerky and a bit hard to use on daily basis in city. Smg is actually better once you know how to use it. I have both. Smg in E60 M5 and DCT in F10 M5. F10 M5 lack the emotion and fun factor but a very sophisticated car that’s more of a chair and a rocket put together . F1 used smg transmission not DCT but then imagine try to drive F1 in city.

I also think it was a crying shame that they didn't do an E31 M8. I know that two or so exist, but they never went into production. An E31 M8 would have been the Concorde of the automotive 90's.

The M2 CSL you have shown doesn’t share its engine with the M3/4. The one you have shown has an N55, the M3/4 has the S55.

  • @moham1287

M2 CSL had an N55 in it - maybe it was the special edition prototyped for the OG M2 before the Comp and eventually CS.

Uh the M2 CSL there uses the N55 from the original M2 and M235i. Seems like since it was a design study they didn't bother using the S55 from the M3/4 and M2CS.

What’s funny is that M2 CSL has an N55 Engine, and due to Emission regulations BMW was forced to choose the S55 instead.
What makes it amusing that had it not been for regulations, The M2 would still of had the N55 engine, simply better M Modified, it shows that the N55 was more than Theatrics and sound. I still enjoy the sound of the M2 Comp and CS, But the N55 just sounds amazing.
I which they simply popped the B58 on the M2 Comp and CS simply better internals and crank the power and Torque to make a better version of the B58, which in its current state it is.
A B58 M2 would be a monster and sound amazing, M Tuned, it would faster and more powerful than the S variants

Who remembers the BMW M3 GTR Race Car? Believe it or not, they even made road car versions of that too, E46 M3 with a racing V8 engine that was road legal! I believe they only made 10 road legal M3 GTRs.
