    Shook hands with Nixon twice during his presidency when he came to visit his grandmother's home in Indiana. Also protested him and his policies before I was eligible to vote. Campaigned hard for McGovern. Interesting and very different times. Saddened to see what has become of US politics and the presidency.

    I disagree with a lot of the comments made by Natasha Lindstaedt. if you would like a more objective as well as a deeper and better understanding of Watergate and the life of Richard Nixon, I strongly suggest the book "Nixon A Life" by Sir Jonathan Aitken. Jonathan Aitken knew Richard Nixon personally both before and after his Presidency. Something Natasha Lindstaedt can`t lay claim to.

    • @billslocum9819
      @billslocum9819 Месяц назад +4

      Aitken's book is quite good reading, but hardly objective either personally or politically. The hard truth about Nixon isn't found by reading the books of his harshest detractors or staunchest admirers, even more than with most public figures, because of how much he shifted his axis over time. I recommend instead Tom Wicker's "One Of Us." Wicker was very liberal, but his take on Nixon was as a successful centrist. Also good at capturing the many facets of Nixon from a central-right position is William Safire's "Before The Fall."
      I'd take Aitken over Fawn Brodie or Woodstein, but they are all writing ideological comfort food to some degree.

      @@billslocum9819 William Safire's "Before The Fall" and Tom Wicker's "One Of Us are both excellent books. I would also recommend the book called "Richard Milhous Nixon: The Rise of an American Politician" by Roger Morris. The best Nixon book I have ever read remains "Nixon A Life" by Sir Jonathan Aitken. I think it is one of the most underrated books about Richard Nixon. Unfortunately, most of the books ever written about Richard Nixon are negative. It was very refreshing to read the book "Nixon A Life" by Sir Jonathan Aitken because it focused on the positives in Richard Nixons Life. I emailed him personally thanking him for writing this book and he emailed me back. Jonathan Aitken knew Richard Nixon personally as did William Safire. Lastly Len Garments book "Crazy Rhythm" is another book I enjoyed reading.

    Even though I don’t share many of his political views, I see Nixon as a tragic hero in many ways. I think he was our last president who was not a complete CIA tool, even though he was an unknowing dupe for them in many ways. I’m convinced Watergate was an internal coup.

      they made him secretley contacting the south viatnamies to stop them accepting peace deals with the north vietnamies, and on and on and on ...

      I don't think Watergate was an internal coup. There is a really, really good 3-part series, here on RUclips, solely dedicated to Watergate where we hear from most of those involved, plus we have Nixon himself on tape!
      Nixon very much wanted the involvement of the CIA, but the agency was neither involved in the break-in or the cover-up.
      Yes, we do have characters like Howard Hunt, who *did* work for the CIA, and Gordon Liddy, who was a CIA wannabe spy, but neither of them were working for or under the instructions of the CIA. *If* that had been the case, Gordon Liddy would still be bragging about it, in his grave, to this day. Make no mistake, particularly, about this last point.

    Regarding the Professor in this documentary (Prof. Natasha Lindstaedt), I do agree, completely, with the vast majority of she says. However, her credentials are, perhaps, slightly questionable due to the way that she pronounces some regularly used words in historic contexts as well as in political science circles.
    For instance, she pronounced the birthplace of Henry Kissinger as "Bavaria", while everyone else pronounces it "Baveria". In regards to Sino-Soviet relations, she pronounced "sino" as "seeno".
    These are, of course, completely pedantic observations from my part. Not that is of huge, if any importance whatsoever, but I simple do not understand why someone familiar with such terms would choose to pronounce them differently than every other person. It is as if a script was read and memorized, and then repeated on camera. There is nothing wrong with that in the context of a documentary, but I am simply curious as to the reasons for "incorrect" or subjective pronunciations.
    Whatever the case, I totally agree with her historical views and interpretations.

    It is amazing, but if you really think about it, if the Vietnam War didn't happen we probably would have never had a hippie movement, woodstock, numerous styles of experimental music / bands films that were outside the typical Hollywood machine, clothing styles wouldn't have existed. The Counter Culture created such a massive movement but it all stemmed from the disenchantment of a vicious conservative presidency and a completely pointless War

    Poorly made “documentary” I’m afraid.
    The broad in this film knows very little about the ‘60s, the Viet Nam War, or President Nixon.
    Of her many, many errors, John Dean did not reveal the existence of Nixon’s taping system (he did not tape record “every single conversation”). It was Nixon aide, Alexander Butterfield, who revealed the existence of the taping system…to Republican senatorial staffers & investigators, including future actor & GOP Senator Fred Thompson.

    • @bretmoleta1860
      @bretmoleta1860 22 дня назад

      Actually, it was Dean who alerted the senate committee that he “ felt” Nixon had a taping system. March 22 1973 they day after Nixon said he could get the money Nixon stood up and walked behind Dean and said “ You know I was only joking” That’s why they called in Butterfield who was getting a haircut at the time ( he’s still alive 97 yrs)

    • @NickFromDetroit
      @NickFromDetroit 22 дня назад

      @@bretmoleta1860 , Yes, I seem to remember reading that Dean anecdote in The Final Days.
      But, I take anything from Dean, Woodward, or Bernstein with a huge grain of salt.
      IIRC, Republican senate committee staffers were trying to figure out how some White House witnesses could recall facts in such detail 2 years after the events. They asked Butterfield if Nixon had note takers or stenographers at these meetings, or afterwards. Butterfield said no, but offered that maybe they reviewed the tape recordings of these meetings prior to testifying. Fred Thompson & the other staffers asked, “What taping recordings?” Butterfield explained the tape recording system & the Republicans thought this was great because it would prove President Nixon was telling the truth and that Dean was lying about everything. Oops.
      That’s just off the top of my head, though. I’d have to do a search to double check.
