23:00, In the train Oneshot scene we can notice a guy carrying a hurt friend of his and yelling for help in the accent that sounds familiar to the accent used by the misfits-gang members,
-Detail : Him and VJ's character use the word "Thollar" [respectful friend] which conveys that members of the gang were also in train meaning this plan of blowing up the train was not executed by them,,
-another detail- in the 1st musical number there's a theatre scene where you can see VJ's character spying on Soori's behaviour behind

There were some little things you guys had missed.
Vijay sethupathy was not her brother and it was actually her uncle who had joined vijay sethupathy's gang.
Her uncle took her to vijay to seek help in finding her parents and it was her parents they were rescuing from the police station in the flashback when vijay cut the policemans head.
Also did you notice that vijay requests that soori not be harmed even though soori knows his face because he has personally seen him help the villagers when he gave him a ride and also in the theatre scene where soori sends some snacks to his girl you can see vijay sitting in the row behind watching the interaction between them. So vijay knew that soori was a good man among the brutal police.

  • @saravanans7906

Well technically you can never say that the actors who played such scenes were actually naked. They probably had skin toned clothes that were later blurred to make the "naked" scenes. Also, yes considering usual Indian film making never really shows nudity especially in such movies where a a large number of family people would come to watch.

Good review ☺️ Vetrimaran is a very progressive and a bold man , who always raised his voice against any injustice on social and political issues , outside cinema .. So it’s not just Cinema he’s a great guy in real life too ... I love him for that . Also there are many others like him here ... Seeing the trend in blockbuster movies from other industry which are quite backward and regressive ,i am so happy and proud that we have got directors like Vetrimaran here ...

    1. Soori's honesty and humbleness come from his modest background especially from the lower middle class families from 70s and 80s when the story is happening. he is also a follower of Vallalar which is shown in the first song in the film.
    2. the inconsistency in the BGM was mainly due to Vetrimaran shooting even till last minute before the release of the movie and Maestro didn't get full version well before the release
    3. train sequence is real set and not vfx
    4. there is lot of hidden things which can only be appreciated if you can understand the time period, local issues of that period, the rise and fall of naxal groups...

My only criticism of Oppenheimer is that they should have also shown the horrors of the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki visually. That juxtaposed with conflicts in Oppenheimer's mind would have been very impactful, plus sending out a tremendous anti-war, anti-nuclear message, especially given a war in Ukraine.

I like your insights and the dedication you have to bring a western perspective on the intricacies of Tamil cinema (specifically). Your appreciation is authentic. These reviews definitely give many tamil movies the limelight they deserve over ‘commercial’ Indian cinema that the world knows of.
Certain elements in these movies are very culturally specific - for example custodial violence, the complexities in Tamil Nadu politics or the overshadows of the caste system within police brutality. Tamil is also a classical language that has so many nuances that it is really hard to capture the screenplay and dialogues through English subtitles.
CBFC film certification process for Tamil movies involves makers mostly attempting for an U/A certificate to maximize their audience reach. In this case, an 'A' certificate was issued to Viduthalai Part-1 after the Censor Board recommended the removal of several scenes during the investigation and the use of profanity. Modesty is a cultural construct ingrained in Tamil people and hence why Nudity is not tolerated well. (Also see above on the ideal film certification rating i.e. U/A).

Guys, there is a commonly accepted Indian view of nudity which is different from commonly accepted American view of nudity. On top of that, there is a censor board to certify films for exhibition which has different nudity standards for foreign and Indian films. Indian films cant show full frontal nudity and they need to convince the board why it was essential. Many directors take easy way out and play safe. The visuals you saw in Viduthalai were very bold for commonly accepted Indian sensibilities.

The nudity! I personally think Vertimaran could be hinting to tamil men and women who were tortured by both Indian n Sri Lankan military forces during Tamil Tigers conflict with the Sri Lankan government here. More reasons why they became the rebels… world should listen to the other side of the story too.
