Heh, I live in a small town like the one in the story -- population 400. It's so rural that there isn't even a traffic light in the entire county. The only difference is that, yes, the state actually does plow the one main road through town, but only the main road. The rest of the side streets are plowed by volunteers. The place is incredibly spooky and eerily quiet at night. Due to living in a narrow river valley, sound echoes all over the place. Strange sounds are heard every night bouncing around through the valley that could be miles away -- or just a few houses down. It's impossible to tell. Surrounded on three sides by a national forest, there's no telling what lurks in those woods. ;)

My hometown in England was also pretty small and I recognized elements of that in this story.

I actually lived in a town like that in Missouri, had under 700 people. Though the smallest town is one that was nearby with 17 people .
