Pandora was the first mortal woman, breathed into being by Hephaestus, god of fire. The gods gave her gifts of language, craftsmanship and emotion. From Zeus she received two gifts: the trait of curiosity and a heavy box screwed tightly shut -- never to be opened. But what treasure could never be seen by human eyes, and why was it in her care? Iseult Gillespie explores the mystery of Pandora’s box.
Lesson by Iseult Gillespie, directed by Silvia Prietov.

Pandora's box serves as a reminder of the importance of mindfulness and the need to think things carefully before doing an action. The story highlights the balance between hope and despair in life. On my opinion curiosity can be both a blessing and a potential source of trouble. On the other hand curiosity drives innovation, creativity, and personal growth. Curiosity motivates us to explore, learn, and understand the world around us, however, unchecked curiosity can lead to unexpected consequences and danger, as I've seen in the story of Pandora's box.
The story suggest extreme consequences on tempering with the unknown, but Pandora's burning curiosity also suggest the duality that lies in the heart of human inquiry…
The story will always remind us that, although bad things are happening around us, there is still beauty left the world and the only thing that we need is ourselves to help it to find.

The fact that 'Hope' was the last thing left in the box shows that hope isn't always to be associated with positive things. Hope, in some circumstances, can destroy you.

    • @aohbmaeid

To me it shows that hope is always the last thing standing. All the evils burst out of the box (pithos), but hope lies in wait for you to release it, it won't leave without you letting it. I do agree that hope can be quite destructive in some cases however.

@@Harrier_DuBois Hope can be destructive when your heart is broken. In cases where it's crucial to accept that something is over, namely. After a breakup, if you keep hoping it can work out when it's a toxic or unhealthy relationship. When losing someone to death, or when things change permanently in life, as they must; we always hope that it can go back to where it was. Many a poor soul has lost their sanity and their will to live over such things.

    • @logos1.618
      @logos1.618 3 года назад +9

Well, ελπις (elpis = hope) was in the same class of evils things in the box/jar. The question of why it wasn't released is quite an important one. You second hypothesis about hope being a kind of horror, I agree with. For hope ultimately makes one passive, there is no need to work for 'fire' or 'the arts.' Pandora's Box was a gift, humans are given problems to deal with and learn from, without hope compromising the pursuit of learning and action.

    • @haydenchan7060
      @haydenchan7060 2 года назад +5

Why Elpis is in the box-well, it’s not just to ease the horrors she unleashed. Hope remained in the jar because hope will never abandon humans. We will always have hope even in the darkest times, even when Zeus’ mini horror army is wreaking havoc on the world. That is the true reason why Elpis remained in the box, which is actually a pithos, a jar.

in the ORIGINAL MYTH, Hope was supposed to be the greatest ill of all, because it gives humanity the delusion that they can affect change upon the world to lessen suffering, when in reality that ability was supposedly only the purview of the gods. I disagree. Like you mentioned, the gods themselves were subject to Fate. Their hope, in spite of their knowledge of this, and of their belief in an afterlife full of suffering, was almost an affirmation of their suffering. They found meaning in it. I'd it's not quite a delusion, but a rejection of a life without meaning due to Fate.

When Odysseus found Achilles in the underworld, all Achilles hoped for was one more day on Earth, even as a poor farmer. He regretted his choice of choosing immortality through his heroics versus living a life full of inherent suffering.

Zeus gave pandora out of the box, and out of curiosity opened it.

Great video! However, from all of our orginal Greek sources, it's Pandora's Pithos, a type of Greek jar, not a box. Pandora's Box is a mistranslation. Secondly, this plan was devised by the gods as a way to hurt mankind and blame it on Epimetheus, Prometheus's brother, as another way to further punish Prometheus for gifting fire to mankind, and to punish mankind for receiving it.
This version of the story could possible exist, but it is very unlikely, and contains many modern additions. The Greek Gods were not viewed as benevolent, but merely reflections of reality. Ted-ed's versions of these myths are not accurate reflections of the greco-roman mythos, but they have animations so thats cool.

Some fun facts I've heard about this story:
-Pandora was a gift from Zeus to Epimethius.
-The box was a gift to Pandora on her and Epi’s wedding day.
-Zeus made Pandora as a punishment, giving her the box knowing she would open it. Pandora was created to bring the punishment of mankind (Death, Disease, Greed, Sorrow, etc.) for accepting the gift of fire from Prometheus.
Pandora opening the box was all a part of Zeus’s plans for revenge on man. Zeus always gets his way and his honor.
Correction: Zeus didn’t create Pandora he ordered her creation from Hephaestus (the God of Forge), who was also ordered to chain Prometheus.

I dont know if this is just me but i terms of the third point, i think this story is tied to christianity, i think Jehovah genuinely wanted Eve to eat the fruit so that the full story of the bible would play out on Earth.

Hope is not the enemy nor the counterpart to the monsters unleashed through Pandora's box, Hope is the worst monster of them all, able to lull you into a false sense of change and security that leads people the cruelest acts of mankind. There were and still people who kill with the "hope" of making things better.

      @@CistudeSuisse it's way more different.
First of all , Abrahamic God was explicit which would happen if they eat that and what they would receive.
Second of all , it was not Adam and Eve alone , they were tempted by the Serpent , which is Satan.
As such , that Tree was a test , in which Adam and Eve failed.
Even though they failed that test and was punished with mortality and it's hardship , we know they were also continously blessed by God , as he often visits them , been even some central point in Caim & Abel.
While Zeus , on the other hand , makes Pandora as a twofold punishiment: first to Epimetheus as he was Prometeus' brother and second to mankind as they received Prometeus' gift of fire.

As most people I was confused why Pandora was given box which can't be opened under any circumstances and the gift of curiosity.
Apparently Zeus knew this was going to happen and he wanted it to.
He probably did this to make Humans suffer which in turn would mean Prometheus would suffer since everyone would blame his brother and his sister in law.

Hope - a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.
I can see why it needed to be locked away. Depending on the perspective and understanding of the individual it'll provide an infinite energy of will power to persevere and overcome any/all obstacles in that pursuit. Whether the goal and means to achieve are harmful is a non-factor since hope for your better future is all you need to push onward. Not too mention its powerful synergies with hate, love, despair, peace, and many others. Sucks there wasn't a god to teach mankind how to properly care for ones own hope, raise, manage it and not allow it to disappear or overwhelm us.

  • @leumasme

The Hope inside the box could also be translated as "deceptive expectation", which would explain why it was in the box of evils in the first place.
