Don't know what it is about ferraris just now , always loved ferraris but there isn't a model in the current line up I actually like . Somehow they've gone from this almost mythical legendry exotic car.maker to just another brand making sports cars.
Sounds like it suffers from similar problems like the modern NSX, the feedback from the steering wheel has all been filtered out probably because the torque vectoring from the front electric motors would've ripped the steering wheel right out of the driver's hands if there's no filtering going on with the power steering.
Actually the steering was the bit I liked the most on the SF90. The unneedly complicated operation of the tech inside the cabin, vents and seats are just annoyingly over engineered and not even good engineering and the drivetrain being not very refined are the weaknesses on the SF90. It’s never going to be remembered as a great Ferrari.
You will never get the same feedback from the steering on a car with driven front wheels..... they have been trying to fix that for years on awd cars. Electric ps doesn't help either........
18:08 LoL It's a true monster, I like the design, it's weird but unique. All that strange controls... I could live with that. And that V8, like all V8s sounds perfect.
I think a potential reason for the difference between the total peak of the electric motors and the battery capacity might be that they just wanted to have more headroom on each of the motors, to be able to spike the power where and when needed, for their traction control system. They probably couldn't get away with fitting a larger or heavier battery and keeping things light at the same time.
Thanks for your usual clear-eyed, candid review, Harry. An engineering tour de force wrapped in a symphony of squeaks, rattles and driver’s controls that could only be described as an ergonomic and human factors nightmare. Anyone notice the door gaps shift and change as it went along? Admire the effort, sure....Want one? I’ll take the cash, thanks Monty. 🙃
Great video, thank you as always Harry. I know this sounds annoying from someone who will never come close to either but I don't like where the world, and the car industry, is going - this thing makes the F430 look like a dream. I don't know, I wish I was born earlier I suppose.
I do like your reviews Harry, but I think the SF90 needs more driving to understand it. I have owned my SF90 for 2 months. For the first few weeks I totally agreed with you on the steering wheel, however now I am used to the endless settings, I totally love it. Th car itself is incredibly powerfull, and coming from an Aston Superleggera, is unbelievable at laying it down. The technology in this car is the future, but the whole package requires some getting used to. I didnt quite understand your comment with handling at speed, however now understanding the car with 2 months experience, it is quite simply stunning. I was at a Ferrari track day at Oulton Park last friday, and no other Ferrari could touch it. The problem for anyone trying to review this car is that it is so far ahead of its time, and mind boggling you need at least 3 weeks driving it to really appreciate it, and fully understand it.
i think it’s a car that all the reviewers have been quick to dismiss in terms of driving experience. lots of cars take time to understand what they are trying to communicate to you and considering the complexity of the sf90 this comes as no suprise. throughout history there have been many cars that take time to master (shelby cobras, some 911s, dodge vipers) just because you can’t push them to the limit before becoming familiar with them does not mean they are not good drivers cars, it’s good to hear from your real world experience of this which confirms my suspicions.
If you live near york/leeds. I'd recommend the top speed events at elvington airfield. A lot of supercars and heavily modified cars take part. Would be great to see what a sf90 can do
Of all the videos I've watched of you testing cars Harry, this has to be one of those very rare ones were the car has taken off that rapidly that it's caused you to stop talking and your face has changed to highly concentrating mode until you back off the hyperspace pedal... I'm not a Ferrari fan really at all, but I am a mechanical engineer and techie, so this car is very interesting. Thanks so much for the video, in a number of ways more interesting to watch than Tim Burton's (Shmee150) videos about his personal SF90. Take care and keep safe. Regards, Stewart.
Fun fact Harry - The electric motors are built in Oxford :) I was lucky enough to provide some measurement equipment to the factory which helps them achieve super tight manufacturing tolerances. They are an amazing design - Very small form factor and weight but with tremendous power output... Great vid as usual - Love the look of the SF90, it's a shame I'd have to sell my house to buy one!
Impressive machine and if money was no object I'd fancy one just to enjoy it's straight line acceleration. Sounds great and clearly moves like a bat out of hell.
I really don't want to add to the negativity but as we say in Australia, that dash and instrument layout is a dog's breakfast. Thanks again Harry for such an honest review.
Out of intrest, how does the combustion engine warm up?? i was always under the impression a high performance car needs fluids etc to be upto temp before you open it up but it seems if you drive around for ten minutes then give it a foot full you can get full power on a cold engine?? is that right??
Many ways to do it. Heat scavenging from the batteries and motors for example. Plus its not a car you suddenly need to demand a spanking during normal driving.
@@TsLeng I recently watched a Shmee video and one of the things he didn't like about his SF90 was the way it would run coldstart randomly whilst using hybrid (he discribed it as a few minutes of 'running rough' when you have been on electric for a while. I understand you can use the same coolant for the batterys and Engine but the oil would still not upto operating temps?? or more importantly if all the oil is sat at the bottom of the engine how long would it take for the dry sump system to bring up the oil pressure??
@@K2edg oil can he heated up too. My very average car with a VW EA888 engine has a water-oil heat exchanger. Many possibilities but I can imagine something like a combined battery-motor coolant/water/oil heat exchanger.
@@TsLeng I understand that........ but for example how do you clearance something that sees a lot of heat (say the valves and guides) you can't preheat them to operating temps just like Piston's-rings-bore clearances etc. I get you can warm oil and water up to a degree but it's still being pumped by a scavange pump from a 488gtb so how long would it take for the cams to get operating pressure for example. Yes you can help with the thermal shock to a degree but even an F1 team can only preheat the engine to a point (they still have to run it upto temp as the engine runs much hotted then the coolant or oil). My point is it's less then ideal!! I have personally seen BMW I8's with ICE problems for this very reason (hence my question).
Technically impressive, but the fact that used one's in the U.S. don't move that quickly and prices are (relatively) soft says a lot. I think money spent on a Pista, F8, or forthcoming 296 would be much more satisfying.
Sheer competence and a clear-eyed review, Harry calls the issues by the name, yet knows to appreciate the sophisticated combo of performance and technology. The looks are not up the technical level.
Thanks Harry, great review. Odd car though - I'd never of believed that Ferrari could offer a 1000bhp £500k hypercar and I would not desire it at all. I agree that the styling is a mess, I think you were kind in not pointing out that an otherwise pretty front end is completely spoiled by them adding a mustache! What were they thinking? Poor steering feel is another no-no, just breaks the bond between you and the car. Then finally, there's no storage at all, so you can't use it for road trips and great experiences. What is it for? I suppose it's for parading around London and other cities where an electric-only mode is required. I'd buy an 812GTS and keep it out of the cities.
The car in the thumbnail pic usually looks brighter and more polished than in the actual video but looking at it in the "garage" walk-around part of the video, in that lighting it looks just as amazing...
I think it keeps the oil warm and ready to go instantly when needed. But I’m not an engineer. But pretty sure they’ve thought about it before putting it into production.
I really wish Harry or Iain T would talk about this - it's been gnawing away at my brain for as long as this type of technology has existed and it amazes me that it never comes up. It seems appalling to my old fashioned mind that a cold (or indeed anything other than fully warmed up with oil already circulating) engine is started and, without even a moment's hesitation, required to deliver maximum output. I wouldn't dream of doing that in my own (non-hybrid) car, it makes my arse twitch just thinking about it! 😬
Yeah I don't care how much engineering these companies put into developing stop/start stuff it's not healthy for the engines. Remember that a lot of manufacturers are just building appliances now. They don't care what happens to these cars outside of warranty.
Brilliant as always Harry. I was really hoping the SF90 would be the next big Ferrari for me to aspire to but after watching countless reviews and the mismatch in driving dynamics, this one is a pass for me.
Anyone familiar with conventional high performance ice engines would get the oil temp up before really getting on it. This type of hybrid doesn't allow for that. It can't be good on internal parts.
It doesn't matter if it works or is viable long term tech. This is the future and if you say the words "future" and "science" next to something then it means it's good.
A great video as always, Harry, well done! Like many others, it's great to see that you are honest and open about the car... amazing technical beast... but haptic buttons, and way too much power for the road... you kinda wish that manufacturers would just take a breath.. but then again, if they don't keep raising the game, what have their super affluent customers got to buy next ? And I love your restraint on the "£2,400 for apple car play"........ LOL, same as over £1,500 for a rear view camera.... oh to be in the position to have so much money that I would go into Ferrari and when they told me those two, I wouldn't go ***????
So maybe if you switched off everything, you'd get full control. However, like you said at the beginning, Ferrari warns you "Are you sure you want to do that" 😅😆. I don't think I'd want to drive my $800,000 USD car at 10/10ths on road or track. Great honest real-world review as always from Harry. Thanks. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
No electric motors for me, sounds like an experiment more than a viable vehicle, more complexity equals more problems. Can you operate this car when the electric motor system fails in some way? Are the power sources independent of each other? I suppose it doesn’t matter if you have issues with it, you just drive your other Ferrari!
@@jonboyjon1976 Have had 4 Ferraris. Never let me down once. Totally reliable and without doubt the cheapest cars I ever owned. Sold them for way more than I bought them for.
Excellent and serious review as always. I totally agree with the verdict. Impressive tech, but not very charming. Ferrari: get a hold of your dashboards! An Italian drivers car should be a mix of classic instruments / materials and functionality. Not a computer game!👎
Harrys little glance in the rear view mirror after he squirted it out of the speed limit sign! You could end up on the front page of the local paper very easily in this car.
are there any warmup issues with the engine kicking in sporadically? Excellent review! Would it be heresy to say it looks like a Corvette C8 with aero add ons?
Interesting question. I wonder if there is some sort of oil warming and pumping still happening despite being on all electric so that the engine is ready to be asked to come to life and kick straight in.... And it is very C8 styling. No troll just facts.
The thing I like about Harry's garage is that it looks like he can actually afford the cars he's reviewing, and he doesn't mind being critical. I am getting sooo sick of guys writing for minimum wage and reviewing cars with monthly payments higher than what they pay for rent.
I think after watching Tim Burton (SHMEE) the softer Stradale version without the Corsa pack is a much more rounded car. He did 3000 miles in the first two weeks he owned it and was delighted. I don’t like the silver moustache and the seats are hard to deal with but it think the looks are fine…the Roma is better but I would not say no to a free one! I think I am becoming a Ferrari fan after decades of never wanting one…the Roma suits me better but the SF90 is something else!
I have to agree about Roma and slowly coming over to liking Ferraris. Ferrari would do well to get back to basics and just make some elegant, but fast, beautiful cars. They've been too messy for quite a while and I'm not keen on the unnecessary dash tech either, although the unnecessary tech seems to be something most manufacturers are indulging in, atm.
Hi Harry all I can see is unnecessary and obviously not to my liking but your channel is fantastic from an old mechanic who loves motorsport and lives down under
I have a deposit on one due in November 2022. I didn’t pick the Fiorano pack because the electronic shocks are much better on the road and, in my opinion, when you’re pressing on. I agree the rear is a mess so I went with the Spider version which cleans it up substantially. But, the technology is amazing. And as a day to day supercar, it’s currently an unbeatable package (until something surpasses it). I’m fortunate enough to have an AMG GTR, 718 GT4 in manual and some other interesting things, so I feel the Ferrari just compliments these extremely well. Oh, I also have some custom luggage to maximise the storage. A must if you want a weekend away with it. Lastly, and one gripe that annoys me. Applecar play, a software flash, is a complete rip off. AND no wireless connectivity nor any wireless charging pad. So your phone is stuck to windscreen with cables floating around. Just awful. First world problems though 🤷♂️
I hope you have an amazing time when you're car arrives, and I hope you make as many memories as Harry does with his cars. I was just watching Harry taking the Testarossa to France with the bikes and coming back with the out board and champagne, I have a feeling you won't be able to do the same with this model, although it would be great if you could do a real world review with Harry after living with the car for a while.
Not sure if it was just the way the mics where positioned in the car - but there seemed an excessive amount of creeks and rattles when driving slowly? I know overall noise levels were high but noise from creaks and rattles gives a low quality feel to the car, where noise from a well tune engine is a delight.
Hi Gavin, the clutch will have disconnected the engine from the gearbox so there won't be any idle drive going through it. If the engine is off it wouldn't be an issue anyway - just the same as rolling down a hill with the handbrake off.
As always, a brilliant review. At 23:00 your comments about the unpredictability of the car is EXACTLY my experience. Was fortunate to have been able to put about 700 miles on the car and I couldn’t gel with it, in hard driving. So I didn’t buy it. Also agree that the 296 will be the model to buy. Firstly because it is the next Challenge car. And, removing the front wheel drive will make it more predictable. Bravo! This review makes me feel vindicated :)
Could there just be a prerequisite that in order for you to say what you feel was the best design, etc. etc., that you actually have owned the car to compare. these chats are just getting ridiculous with all of these subject matter experts who have no point of reference but the Internet..
I love how scientific he is. "When it gets to 80, that's silly noisy". Also, if I had the money to buy a hybrid supercar that expensive, (which I don't) in the event I heard it making noises like that I'd take it back to the factory and tell them to do a quality check.
Thanks Harry! I didn't watch the video,(Ferrari has lost their way!) but I appreciate your views on anything including the bikes and wanted to feed the algos.
Can’t think of any modern sportscar i would buy, execpt that T33 wich is sold out and a GT3…991 or 992. I’d buy the RUF SCR though, and the 250 SWB GTO engineering. Every other car i’d get would be a car of the past. Some M3’s E30, E46, porsche (targa) 964 restomod, Alfaholics gta, BMW 2002 tii, tthe list goes on…😅
I love your reviews, is there any chance of repositioning the camera on your right shoulder a bit. The door pillar obscures to much of the view of the road?
Can't help but feeling that Ferrari doesn't really have a clear sense what its customer base looks like. They seem to be torn between making a fashion statement and showcasing their technical prowess. Just because you can doesn't mean that you should in a road car.
@Alex Alexander-Anderson Everybodies sales figures have taken a knock. Immaterial of models. Just shows how successful they are that new models that are brave like this, are still being released.
Excellent review as always. Would have been good if HM could have had it on a track as well to see if the unnerving handling was still present. Let's be honest the thing isn't designed for road driving.
I can not understand how you can enjoy 1000HP on those public roads...just imagine a Harry's Farm tractor driving normally in front when you enter a blind corner...BANG! We instantly lose 2 of the best RUclips channels !
Hi, Bruno! Yep. Alas, supercars and hypercars aren't built to be enjoyed; they're built to be sold. Actually using them in anger on sweeping B-roads isn't part of the deal. Most (not all) owners are far too worried about putting miles on them or dents in their wheels or cracking a £35,000 bit of carbon-fibre underbody on a chunk of detached kerb to have what I'd call fun. If you're seriously wealthy you can thrash them very, very carefully - like Timbo Moneybags (Shmee 150) - but not on ordinary country roads with their turds and tractors and tools in Toyotas coming the other way on the wrong side of the road whilst sending ironic text messages about bad drivers. This kind of car might be fun for an expensive weekend at the Nürburgring, but it's basically a pretty but pointless plaything, rather like, I suspect, the vapid girlfriends of their golf-loving owners. [Whoops. 🤭I think I may have gone too far. Again.]
There was one at coffee and cars here in Australia a few weeks back. To be honest I didn't know what it was and it didn't really have any sort of wow factor. I'm sure its wild to drive but I honestly walked past it until I overheard someone say it was an sf90. Maybe I'm not the target audience of the styling, but then I wonder who is.
I love how Harry doesn't shield any company from criticism. Just calls it like he sees it. I've never driven a Ferrari but those haptics, especially the disappearing ones, do seem like very poor UX decisions.
It used to be that CF was a light material with desirable properties, therefore making parts of sports cars out of it made them better cars - but at a cost, since CF is expensive. Then manufacturers started offering useless, purely cosmetic CF. Certainly they would sell you as much expensive material as they could, and idiots would buy it for the singular reason that it showed others how much they had spent. Eventually, someone will sell a cotton t-shirt that says “This cost $1m”. And its only point would be to show others that one spent $1m on a t-shirt. Before that stage, the only thing slightly less stupid is that horrendously ugly stripe on the SF90 that you can only buy if you paid for the Fiorano pack. Its only conceivable purpose, even at the expense of making the car as ugly as sin, is to advertise the eye-watering amount one paid for options.
Harry I think the odd power number from the electric motor is because you cant really add the electric power and the engine power because they both peak at different RPM (an electric motor has a much lower peak power RPM because they deliver maximum torque at essentially zero RPM). It is basically blended, not added.
@@faafo2 very good! I’d rather the Ferrari list price was £2k more than feel I’m being ripped off. But in any case i image if I could afford it I probably wouldn’t care 😁

BMW did the same hybrid drivetrain setup a decade ago with the i8, albeit with 40% of the horsepower figures. Same mid engine, rear electric motor, front electric motors for electric FWD, battery, etc. setup.
I still belive BMW missed a great opportunity with the i8. They should have made it an halo car like the R8. Imagine if the i8 had the S55 engine from the m3 and made 550 hp instead of 360 hp.

My biggest problem with cars like this is their performance. I know that sounds strange, but this sort of acceleration can get you to the scene of the crash very quickly indeed. Or in other words, I suspect I (and likely many other people) would run out of talent long before we managed to push the vehicle anywhere near its limits. It looks decent, sounds good, goes like stink...but unlike older models of Ferrari and Lamborghini, not something I aspire to driving. And while it's pretty, it's not something I'd have wanted for a poster on my bedroom wall as a kid, either. Unfortunate.
I have started to think along these lines recently. I drive an M5. It's nowhere near as fast as the SF90 but it's still fast enough to take me to prison territory in a few seconds and a crash at those speeds is a serious matter. I used to own an Impreza STI and that only had half the power of my M5 but I had more fun in it. I'm not sure what to buy next but my next car will be smaller, lighter and less powerful.
I must agree ,recently I loaned my old TT to a young lady who is very capable in driving at speed any of their super cars ( 5 )she is very quick and was surprised when she came back to tell me how enjoyable the ride was in the old TT particularly the smooth ride ,so there is fun to be had in older sports cars 👍👨🏻🏭

Sounds like you like electronics as much as you do rusty spoons
Come out later with more HP. The rich want the latest greatest. They will keep selling. How much is to much for Ferrari drives?
“I admire it more then I love it..” again a sublime review 😊🙏🏽

Actually, it is the use of an the wrong word, not incorrect grammar.
As always an excellent review and brave enough to say that more isn't always better even in a Ferrari !!

Thanks for your usual clear-eyed, candid review, Harry. An engineering tour de force wrapped in a symphony of squeaks, rattles and driver’s controls that could only be described as an ergonomic and human factors nightmare. Great video, thank you as always Harry. I know this sounds annoying from someone who will never come close to either but I don't like where the world, and the car industry, is going - this thing makes the F430 look like a dream. I don't know, I wish I was born earlier I suppose.
Those tailgaters in the mirror where left in the dust @ 15:00 - I keep playing that over and over hehe :-)
@harry'sgarage the battery power and electric motors non peak power , keeping them reliable by keeping them less stressed also a lot less heat.
For an honest insight into an automobile their is no one on earth better than Harry.
I can only say ... you lucky devil - I'm so jealous
If you live near york/leeds. I'd recommend the top speed events at elvington airfield. A lot of supercars and heavily modified cars take part. Would be great to see what a sf90 can do
Not for half a million.
The Assetto House Deposito pack is something else, can't imagine what it must be like to tick that box

The car is insane and I totally agree with what you’ve said.
Even if I’d got the money, it’d be a no from me.
Hey Harry, you have an enthusiastic viewer in me & some guy called Jerry Seinfeld just gave you a shout on Spike's Car radio!
Great question, keen to hear some answers to this.
I've seen this vid about 5 times now, just for Harry's reaction each time he floors it. God I'd love to own this car
Technically impressive, but the fact that used one's in the U.S. don't move that quickly and prices are (relatively) soft says a lot. I think money spent on a Pista, F8, or forthcoming 296 would be much more satisfying.
Great review! Informative, insightful and honest
That’s by far the most scared I’ve seen you look when you do the acceleration test up there hill out of burford.. you genuinely looked terrified 🤣
Fair point . Makes me hanker after simple inexpensive cars .
The car in the thumbnail pic usually looks brighter and more polished than in the actual video but looking at it in the "garage" walk-around part of the video, in that lighting it looks just as amazing...
Surely the engine will be in heavy load without the chance to warm up? This goes against what we have know for years about damage to engines!

Anyone familiar with conventional high performance ice engines would get the oil temp up before really getting on it. This type of hybrid doesn't allow for that. It can't be good on internal parts.
Thinking exactly the same
It doesn't matter if it works or is viable long term tech.
Did I miss the explanation about why you must always have it plugged in charging ? ....

Amazing to see the car behind in the wing mirror at 15 minutes in, just fall away so so quickly!
I'm not usually the negative guy, but it still looks like a 90's Camaro to me. It can't be unseen.
Then you need new eyes because you’re blind.
You're right, it is so ugly. If it came from the Japanese I think it'd be cool, but it's a Ferrari. It's supposed to be beautiful
So maybe if you switched off everything, you'd get full control. However, like you said at the beginning, Ferrari warns you "Are you sure you want to do that" 😅😆.
It's a Ferrari, so the chances are that the petrol engine is likely to fail first.

are there any warmup issues with the engine kicking in sporadically? Excellent review! Would it be heresy to say it looks like a Corvette C8 with aero add ons?
Troll
Ferrari love to rip people off for stuff that should be standard equipment these days.
What is your experience like with the AMG GTR, they’re very under appreciated it seems
Did you pay the extra $2000 for wheel bolts like this car was optioned with? :-D
Get a hard top in black, it looks good in that colour as it hides a lot of the busy bodywork.
Not sure if it was just the way the mics where positioned in the car - but there seemed an excessive amount of creeks and rattles when driving slowly? I know overall noise levels were high but noise from creaks and rattles gives a low quality feel to the car, where noise from a well tune engine is a delight.
Ferrari assembly quality for you....
And an actual question for Harry. When it's running all electric, through town etc., what are the gears doing? Regards, from the Wirral, Gavin
Probably breathing a sigh of relief before the next torque assault 😊
Hi Gavin, the clutch will have disconnected the engine from the gearbox so there won't be any idle drive going through it. If the engine is off it wouldn't be an issue anyway - just the same as rolling down a hill with the handbrake off.
Thanks Harry, another wonderful review.
The fact you'd have around 100x more fun in your Elan says to me everything that's wrong with modern hyper-cars, especially EV / hybrid ones.
completely off-topic, can we ask what happened to the Lotus Emira
I loved Harry's stereo review😄😄😄
I never thought I'd find a Ferrari tedious to watch. Harry's review is excellent as usual but by God that car bores me.

As a designer, completely agree that the styling is "a mess". IMO the last beautiful Ferrari was the 458.
this car is not for old codgers like you, its for us the 25-30yo stock broker / bankers
Oh, here we go, someone calling himself a "designer" to make his opinion sound more credible. Seen that trick on almost every car video. Nice try kid.
Being that it’s a hybrid, I would have liked to hear what the gas mileage is like.

Well you’re wrong there. They know exactly what they are doing. Just because a model moves away from the norm doesn’t mean they don’t have a plan.

Hi, Bruno!
Again.]

Its only conceivable purpose, even at the expense of making the car as ugly as sin, is to advertise the eye-watering amount one paid for options.
whistling diesel is selling t-shirts saying this t-shirt cost $1000, maybe if he sees this comment he will release one for $1m?
Harry I think the odd power number from the electric motor is because you cant really add the electric power and the engine power because they both peak at different RPM (an electric motor has a much lower peak power RPM because they deliver maximum torque at essentially zero RPM). It is basically blended, not added.

Thanks for the review Harry - now understand a little more the rationale behind shmee150’s choice of spec.
