  • As said in the video itself, I uploaded this due to realizing that the game is relatively-unknown. Hopefully with the release of Homeworld Remastered, more attention will come to the plight of Homeworld Cataclysm, which was a standalone expansion to the first game in the franchise. First released in June 30th, 2000. Homeworld Cataclysm was developed by the now-defunct Barking Dog Studios.
    As of current knowledge, no known copies of Homeworld Cataclysm's source code exist, which puts the potential for a remaster like HW1&2 at a precarious position.
    Now, as a thank you to Miina Bunny for keeping the previous version of this section up since 2007, here's a link to their video of it.
    • Homeworld Beast saga b...
    I went ahead and included a couple extra sections of cutscenes that were not in Miina's video. And recorded this at the highest quality that I could, cutting out the vast majority of micromanaging shenanigans in order to skip to story bits for the most part. Left a little in to show newcomers a tad of what the game playstyle is like.

    "CUT US LOOOOSE!"
    This engineer was getting eaten alive by a Hellfungus, his adrenaline probably catapulted to DEFCON 1, and yet he still had the presence of mind to suppress his currently-apeshit survival instincts and condemn himself for the greater good. That was a man of focus.

    • @Vyporware
      @Vyporware  8 лет назад +81

      +SymbolsWriter Making a horror RTS is... Honestly I'm not sure it can be entirely done, considering the perspective and gameplay differences that deliberately disconnect the player from the units. But I know it can at least be partially done, because there are moments in this game where I feared sending my units into a battle because I saw the units in the enemy fleet, and knew that said units had the ability to corrupt my ships. And there was nothing I could do but send my fleet and watch as part of it was turned against me.

    • @UltimateDeliciousPie
      @UltimateDeliciousPie 8 лет назад +49

      Obviously not in the game play scene of commanding units, however Homeworld has always excelled with it's story, making you connected to people whom you hardly ever see if ever, just through the voices alone we get a much better picture than any scene if we actually see the characters.
      So with HW:C it is a gameplay/story disconnect that separates itself from being true horror also consistently since naturally we overcome The Beast, but those moments were The Beast first emerges are truly horrifying, and the worst part, we just sit there helpless listening to the screams of the damned. To pull something like that off I find worthy of praise, mostly thanks in part again to the hear not see approach our imagination fills in the gaps.
      And then you get the big fuck off space blower upper cannon. Sending big balls of NOPE at the beast.

      There really are few things as satisfying as landing a Siege Cannon shot at 100% damage range right in the center of an enemy fleet.
      Starcraft 2's "ultimate" weapons look so amazing. But then when translated onto the map itself, is literally just a small blue "pew pew". Effective against light units, sure. But super underwhelming.

    The Beast one of the most terrifying pure evil factions in all of fiction they were the granddaddies of the flood, replicators and the reapers and eclipse the goddam Borg. Seriously when I compare all the modern evil factions they pale compared to the beast that thing was evil and hunger incarnate who agrees with me.

    • @Vyporware
      @Vyporware  9 лет назад +81

      The Beast is terrifying not because it is an evil greedy entity, but because of what it can DO.
      Theoretically, if it makes contact with a planet, it could spread so long as it finds organic material to use in order to continue spreading. Entire countries could become a wasteland of sentient beast goo. As the Bentusi put it. They are prisoners within their own bodies.

    • @lulubeloo
      @lulubeloo 9 лет назад +32

      Vyporware exactly, the worst part is being painfully assimilated into all that gooey biomass and still retain your awarness, all you can do is watch while you infect other unsuspecting victims and all you wish for is death.

    • @uGuardian4
      @uGuardian4 9 лет назад +17

      Vyporware I get the impression it doesn't actually even care if it's organic or inorganic, the only difference that it provides is processing capability and control, not infecting capability. It would probably eat the planet.
      Also, that in of itself is a notable plot hole, both in how it never got to any planets, and how pieces of destroyed beast ship aren't causing contact conversions, or converting things in the future as the particles drift about, not even caring about being smaller than the eye can see because they are independently viral.

    • @Vyporware
      @Vyporware  9 лет назад +13

      uGuardian It's certainly a bit curious when you think about it. Because they did make something that could basically do worse to a planet than make it inhospitable or destroy it outright. And yet, The Beast never actually did anything of the sort in the whole time this was all going on.
      Though with that being said, there clearly are some limitations to it, if the Taiidan somehow managed to contain it for experiments on that planet you infiltrate with the captured resource collectors.

    • @uGuardian4
      @uGuardian4 9 лет назад +1

      Vyporware Any idea if they were helping the Naggarok with it's repairs at that point? The Naggarok might've been trying to make as much of a positive influence as possible.
      Also I get the impression that, judging from LAZORS (freaking Bentusi) and plasma killing it, (and by plasma I'm talking about incinerating the structure, not referencing the multiplayer-only research that only exists for game balance,) you could probably contain it in an energy shield or field of some form, although that was one of the critical issues for them, Homeworld appears to be a scifi universe without any form of energy shielding.
      But if they can do it small scale, that could probably contain small quantities, and at the beginning they do mention they were doing some specific experiment that involved surface contact when it started eating the lower decks.

Killing a Gravemind is just a minor setback, reducing the Flood to but a single spore? If you've ever read Vernor Vinge's Fire Upon the Deep, then you know exactly what's coming. This is the closest thing in video games (or any medium for that matter) of what it looked like to the Straumuli expedition the moment that the Blight - very similar to the Beast - awakens and becomes self-aware. In the book, this was from the *Blight's* perspective, so the screams and cries of the expedition were dismissed callously as the Blight "flowered" and ate everything and EVERYONE in the vicinity, then made preparations to starts spreading. It knew that a single ship escaped its grasp, but thought very little of it... only much, much later was the significance of that ship revealed.
    It spreads like the Blight, too, through beamed communications carrying its data. When that beam hits the computer systems of a victim civilization (or ship) it takes over the computers then takes over the *crew,* turning them into its meat puppets. Exactly as shown here.

      @uGuardian4 9 лет назад +11

      KommandantDahl I get the impression that it's actually a lot more efficient, faster, and pervasive.
      If I remember correctly the beast is subatomic and could care less whether what it's subverting is organic or inorganic, it just isn't capable of self-functioning without subverting a form of control mechanism, and it's said it merges the nervous system of the people it subverts into the electronics of the ship, so they're still alive but it's rending them to shred and rendering them to goo.
      I think Borg subversion is downright polite in comparison, and at least it can be reversed.
      About the subatomic comment, I remember that for some reason, but I cannot say WHERE I remember it from, be it implication, cut-scene, manual, etc. So it's highly likely that I am not actually correct in remembering that. But it definitely is bio-organic and seems to just outright convert anything it touches with ridiculous speed.

    • @JeremyGalloway
      @JeremyGalloway 8 лет назад +8

      I disagree, I don't think they're alive anymore after infestation... the process kills them (painfully) and integrates the biomass of all the humans into one new organism that essentially is a living ship. The biomass taken from the former humans may still be alive at a cellular level, but it's not human, and certainly not the individual, conscious being it once was.

      nope, its possible in an way, which you have already said, but you dont need the source code to make an remaster, that was the case between vicarious visions and the original ps1 crash bandicoot trilogy, it just takes more time to make it, the engine is outdated anyways, which is why gearbox used homeworld 2 engine on the original on the remaster, though pisses me off they kept the same UI and stuff, basically meaning the original is an game on homeworld 2

      UI and engine won't be a problem. What they want are the scripts that basically makes the campaign. They'd only need a few devs if they already had all of this ready, all theyd need to do is to port it to the new game engine which shouldn't be much of a problem (p sure they conceived the whole thing to be seamlessly interfacing with the old codes) The only work required would be artistic work to actually "remaster" the appearance of the models, thus saving a lot of time and money, cuz the concept art is already done. Going in such a project wthout the codes basically means that they have to do all the scripting themselves.
      We're in a time where niche RTS are not that interesting anymore in terms of sales, so convincing shareholders or even just upper management to give the green light to projects is absurdly hard.

      yep, genres on this century have been getting fucked up slowly over time, action rts (uneducated retards call it moba) killed rts, and battle royale is in the process of doing the same to fps

    Cataclysm was an unofficial sequel as it was done by a different studio, it is unlikely it is lost, more that it is not been bought.After all clever techies can get the source code from the release and there are plenty of copies of Cataclysm out there.

      I still have one lying around if they need it, however, I believe that to fit the game/sound data on a single basic CD (750MB) they had to compress it and that would result in a substandard transfer, hence, the need for the original lost uncompressed zip drives.

    I really loved HW 1 and cataclysm both games had a nice element of RTT and not just RTS in space, its a real shame the RTT was removed in HW 2 it would have made the game alot more immersive and engaging.
    I would love to see a reboot of HW universe in cry engine or unreal engine along with fully fledged mod support like in Xcom 2 and totorials on how to create own asset. This is what homeworld really need to make a true comeback.

      +DanielPembrink It's pretty much what we were hoping for with Homeworld Remastered, but didn't get. We just got a prettier, dumbed-down HW1 in an updated HW2 engine. With nonexistent fleet formations.

      Vyporware I know I still find HW 1 remastered unplayable, I always won mission 2 and 3 without taking ANY casulties in classic, but in the remastered the fighters and corvettes just screw up ;_;
      Where you able to finish the remastered version?

      Yes. I beat both HW1 remastered and HW2 remastered. HW2 is basically the same except for the non-functional formations. But HW1 is dumbed down to hell. The Kadeshi missions are a joke considering that the projectile hit chance is based off of RNG now, since it's the HW2 engine, and not the HW1 one. Meaning that the tiny little squishy fighters get hit based off of if they roll a dice poorly. Instead of actually being, y'know, evasive. Which is how the HW1 engine functioned.

      +Vyporware yeah i know that just sucks and the doms review of homeworld 2 makes me personally dismiss the game story (it is so bland), im writing a fan fiction where homeworld 2 story never happened and exploring the politics and the obvious problems/challenges an infant race will face after being close to extermination.
