McDonald's 1984 Summer Olympics Gamble (And Loss) | Tales From the Bottle

- McDonald's had a costly loss at the 1984 Summer Olympics, after failing to predict a fairly predictable occurrence.
"With a history of using athletic prowess to sell fast food products, American restaurant chain McDonald's purchased major sponsor status for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, in addition to sponsoring several American teams competing at the event. McDonald's also invested in a major advertising campaign around the event. In addition to the sponsorships and advertising, McDonald's prepared to repeat a successful giveaway promotion they deployed during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal, Quebec, Canada, where customers were offered a chance to win products when the American team won a medal.
In preparation for the promotion, McDonald's had scratch-off cards printed with different Olympic events. The cards were handed to customers at concessions in the United States and they could be redeemed for a specific food item if the American Olympic Team won a medal at that specific event. A gold medal was worth a Big Mac, silver an order of french fries, and bronze a Coca-Cola. The slogan "When the U.S. Wins, You Win." was adopted for the campaign. McDonald's had made their cost estimates for the promotion based on the American medal count at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, which was 94 medals, this included 34 gold medals.
McDonald's promotion campaign was given an unexpected boost when the Soviet Union, along with the thirteen Eastern Bloc countries, boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in retaliation for the United States' boycotting of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia as a protest against the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. Iran and Libya also declined to participate for other reasons. With several of the Olympic powerhouse teams absent, the U.S. easily dominated the Olympic Games and walked away with 174 medals, 83 of them gold.
As the Games started and the American teams conquered podiums, customers were enthusiastic about exchanging their cards for free food. More cards were being handed out with each new order, offering more giveaway opportunities. Some 6,600 outlets reportedly faced shortages of the promoted items, especially the Big Macs.
McDonald's have been discreet about the cost of the promotion, saying only it was the most expensive promotion in the franchise's history to date. Marketing experts estimate it in the millions of dollars, especially since the chain normally makes a generous profit on each of the Big Macs it was now handing out for free.
Despite the financial costs incurred in 1984, McDonald's repeated the "When the U.S. Wins, You Win" food prize promotion using the same game-piece format in both 1988 and 1996. McDonald's would continue its partnership with the Olympic Games until 2017."

The loser here would have been the "Tennants" / franchisees
Mc is pronounced MICK not MAC.
There might be people in the Amazon Rainforest who haven't and I can say with a fair degree of certainty that the natives of North Sentinal Island haven't been to a McDonalds.
Hey Qxir, I'm curious why you drew the Belize flag at 6:30 (bottom row, 4th from the right)? We've never had a McDonalds in Belize nor have we ever won anything at the Olympics.
Did you win that million buck contest a while back? I voted for you but never heard.
Tales from the bottle: never gets old! I just wish I haven’t watched every episode already!
I love this series so much that I often rewatch the old episodes. Absolutely my favorite channel on RUclips.
I'm always happy to see...ANUDDER episode!
Big fan from Philadelphia PA, USA. Subbed like a year ago when watching the tank vigilante content and couldn't stop laughing at such horror.
That feeling when you actually have to wait for qxir uploads
It's just like dead baby jokes!

"If you walk into the mcdonald's in Russia..."
Yeah, about that.
Don't ask for Ukranian fries.
It's now McPutin.
They have Big Tasty now instead of Big Mac. Which is a double layer of irony since they are apparently assuming that the average Russian will be hungry enough to go to B&T for the taste rather than to stuff their face with cheap burgers.
@@fireiceuk9221As a Russian I genuinely do it for the taste, they are NOT cheap by our standards, have you seen the fucking prices, our minimum wage is $0.90/hr
@@JohnLawlessright, don't ask for something that doesn't exist
Dressing up Ronald McDonald as a SS officer has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. You are right that it probably wouldn’t put McDonald’s out of business if they ran that as a promotion. Which makes it twice as amusing.
I liked Uncle Sam chilling on the afghan border.
What? ... i just started the video, scroll down and see this. 😂
It feels like a promotion their Japanese arm would run without approval from head office.
That's exactly how I see them when I show up in the morning at 10:29 trying to get a bagel !
womp-womp-wommmmp😢
they do be funding israel n shii
I never thought I would learn about scratch off ticket materials, but here we are. Tales From the Bottle truly is the gift that keeps on giving
Well, not at least from QXIR, but thankfully now my mental cesspool is filled to overflowing
I think he spent so long researching it that he was of the opinion that we had to learn something too. 😁

That fucking clip at the end, I have never heard something so Irish in all my life. The confident calm tone of the speaker claiming the medal was inevitable, then suddenly "Unless he collapsed" in just a completely different tone.
IKR? 🤣🤣
Now all of a sudden that Simpsons episode makes sense.

Well, now my evening includes spending hours on ebay looking for the McDonald's ash tray.
I gotta go dig out the glasses with pictures of the hamburgler, grimace, etc that were recalled for cadmium paint.
Our McDonald's was used to test the "Diner" concept, with phones at the booths used to place your orders..it failed.
I remember this happening while I worked at the local McDs. We ran out of Big Mac buns one night and there was a small scale riot, with older kids rampaging the store lobby, breaking several chairs, a garbage can box, and two tables. They also threw a few dozen meal trays around the playland. We closed the store early and it took about two hours to clean up the mess, and a couple kids got arrested but never charged with anything. I'm pretty sure McDs did just fine, basically everyone who got a free Big Mac would pay for a soda and fries, and the mark up on those items is much higher than the loss on a Big Mac. I guess the bean counters would have been upset but McDs is still around so, no tears for Ronald.
I would’ve just used two regular buns with a bottom bun in the middle. Actually, I think I’ve had to do that before. The people who did the orders weren’t always very bright.
A regular... big~Mac ~attack
When I was in sixth form (UK) in 2011, a mate of mine who was pulled back a year, left sixth form early to work full time in McDonalds, he started as crew member then was offered a promotion to crew trainer, he took it. At the time If I recall he was telling us he was earning around £10 an hour. That same year I did a case study on McDonalds for business studies and it was actually one of the best employers to work for overall once pay, benefits etc had been taken into account.
Alas, this mate told me that McDonalds used to pay literally like 5 pence for their burger buns, 20-25p for the beef itself, 10p for the "soda" drink and a few pence for the fries...
Basically he said if you buy a "meal" for £5, the whole "cost" of the meal to McDonalds is £1 or less for the most part.
So the szechuan sauce emotionally immature outrage thing was nothing new for mcdonald's. Huh 🤔
What is wrong with people?
Thank you Jerome Greenfield for inventing an environmentally friendly scratch-off coating
Hello fellow furry :3
At 13yo, this was the best summer. Endless feedback loop of free food plus more scratch offs, which gave you more free food and scratch offs, and a tradable commodity.
It saddens me that Ronald McDonald was retired forever from their stable after that one thing that happened. Cut the guy some slack!
Ronald McDonald sold me crack laced with fentanyl
Ronald was slowly being pulled from branches years before the clown incident. Kids just don't love clowns anymore, so he was no longer relatable. Now McDonalds is focused on profiting off nostalgia with their old mascot cast and creating a horrifying minion knockoff for kids.
@scrittle I hate clowns, but I love Ronald. Damn shame.
He was executed for committing multiple murders.
@@scrittleWhen first reading your comment I thought you were going to make a joke about peices of Ronald McDonald being literally pulled off of tree branches after some sort of explosive ending for the clown.
"There is, of course, the famous Happy Meal for kids, which comes with a free toy - the quality of which has varied greatly throughout the years."
The McDonald's Matoran Bionicle sets are still peak McDonald's toys, and this is a hill I'm prepared to die on.
Thank you for your service.
Whats interesting for those of us who were cognizant of the world in the 80s/90s is how much the advertising has changed. Back then I remembered there being contests and sweepstakes and giveaways at pretty much any major corporate store almost all year long but now all the advertising is based on apps and loyalty programs.
It's the same system just modernized.
Less competition. It’s the same reason playlands closed; McDonalds doesn’t need to stand out anymore and it allowed them to decrease the space in their stores.
I was 9 during the 84 Olympics. Yes, I'm one of the old guys who watches this channel. Anyway, I lived within walking distance of a McDonald's. And those scratch cards were "no purchase necessary." Meaning any kid could walk in and ask for cards. I ate like a king that summer.
There was a giant board in the lobby where you could see the events and what medals the US won. It was a real thrill to look at that board and see what free food I won.
I was 13, and what a glorious summer. Endless food and the winning scratch offs became a tradable commodity. “I’ll give you 2 fries and a Big Mac for a Snickers.” Or sell them cheap to adults before they walked in. Bliss… 😊
LMAO @ "old guy" I was 26 in 1984. Sit down kid😂

I like the false start on the animation when Qxir chuckles at "burger." Even without the more sophisticated touches that have been growing in frequency, it's those kind of little timing gags that make the animation great.
CRANKING THESE GEMS OUT AT LIGHTNING SPEED
These videos must be QXIR’s hog, because he be crankin’ em!
I can’t believe he actually illustrates all of these himself… he’s a really talented artist
I was nine in 84 and guess "no purchase was necessary" for this promotion... Or at least a couple of friends and I figured it was the case and we would just go up to the counter and ask of tickets. Which they gave us and if it wasn't a winner we'd ask for another one. Though it was supposed to be one ticket per visit.
I was unaware of the back story, but now I know thanks to the CCCP we ate that trash twice a day till school started in the fall.
He says stay safe every time, and it always feels like a threat
😂😂😂
Don't threaten me with a good time 😂
Thank you for telling the story of one of my best childhood memories. The chances of winning another meal and another ticket was so good that you only needed a second dollar just in case. For about two months, a whole group of us impoverished teens would walk into our local McDs in N.E. Arkansas with $2 each and eat like kings.
My dad had that McDonald's ashtray. He died of COPD back in January. But because of that ashtray, at least he went out in style. Thanks, Mackey-D!
What does COPD stand for?

Speaking of McDonald's and their Monopoly giveaway. You should do a Tales from the bottle video as its quite an interesting story
I miss the Monopoly thing at Mickey D's! That was a serious addiction for me. How I didn't weigh 300 lbs from it lol!

Given the amount of discarded scratch-off tickets that are littered around american cities daily, I think we should all thank Jerome for his contributions to science.
great video as usual! one note though, the 1980 boycott wasn't only the united States. more than a dozen countries participated in a full boycott. including communist china, and the idea wasn't conceived by an American but was advocated by the Carter administration after Soviet Andrei sakharov called for one, which later had him prosecuted by the KGB
Great video. Feels like a classic

I remember this a bit from when I was a kid and faintly remember being presented w/ a situation where every single ticket was a winner.
GTSY QXIR,WE MISSED YOU LAST WEEK..STAY AWESOME..
I was born in 1980 and literally my first memory of McDonald's was a trucker hat with the Olympic rings printed on the front with the Eagle logo standing on top of them. We didn't go to McD's often, but I still have that hat at my mom's house somewhere. We were driving back to Pine Bluff, AR from Dallas and stopped at McD's and I thought the Happy Meal was the coolest thing ever.
Qxir, you’re still my favorite person on RUclips. I wait every week for your videos.
Heh, literally as I type this my cigarette's still burning in one of those McDonalds ashtrays on my desk
Two things I thought would never mix.
The Simpsons parody of this with Krusty becoming so angry with his losses that he promised to spit in every third or something burger.

The darts sportsman at the end is hysterical
Love those Monopoly SCAMs 😂
Tales from the Bottle are awesome, Qxir you RULE :3
My high school friends and I LOVED the 1984 Olympics! This is one of my favorite personal stories to retell! Qxir's story is completely accurate. We spent that whole summer at McDonald's and ate free food the whole summer! Glorious times!
love your videos... cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 🍺👍
I remember this well. My aunt worked at McDonald’s and gave me a whole stack of cards. So many were winners. I ate McDonald’s all summer and never paid. 🎉
Animations are banging today. I can’t stop lol zing.
I was wondering why the total play time was a minute over average, but you had to look up the crucial details of what the 'scratchy bits' are made of and its history data. Of course. 👍
If this promotion ran here in Ireland they wouldn't need to give out any food.
At least Supermac beat McDonald's and as a result the Big Mac has no trademark in Europe. F'king big win for the Irish chain and civilised societies right there.
Fries are potatoes so there's that...
@@georgeprout42 Its pretty funny that in a big chunk if not most of the country Supermacs reigns supreme, while in Dublin and GDA McD's reigns supreme. Moving from dublin to the country after going through childhood with McD's, Supermac's is a welcome surprise. Much better than McD's and the dublin only chipper Romayo's combined.
I'd expect there to be a lot of world-class boxers from Ireland, but I guess if they test you for alcohol it might cut down on the number of medals.
In America, with its 335 million inhabitants, the number of athletes is already much higher, plus every athletic halfwit can get a scholarship, which means they have the funds and time to devote their life to sports. So maybe you should take that into account.
2:16 "#2 like a poo" 😂
I was in LA in summer of 84 , visiting a relative, not for the Olympics. However, whilst I was there tried to get to see some of the events, but in the end didn't bother. Parking was a nightmare with the cost, in some cases upwards of $400. The TV coverage was also appalling, even Americans complained that they were only showing the US contenders. Well done Ireland 👍😉❤. Edited to add, not a great year for Ronnie, as not long before I got there they had a mass shooting in Cali''s, San Ysidro McD''s, when 21 people were killed.
Graduated 1984 in San Diego County. Seems like yesterday..wait..wasn't it???
Played the McDonald's Olympic games back then. It was fun
Wait, McDonald's released a book about Ancient Egypt. That's kind of cool.
Also, grandmother still has a bunch of VHS tapes that where sold at McDonald's. I watched a tape of Dirty Rotten Scoundrel that came from a McDonald's last time I was there.
