- At Paris Haute Couture Week 2022, Iris van Herpen celebrates the fifteenth anniversary of the Maison with ‘Meta Morphism’.
Holding a lens to our intangible identities and shifting society with the metaverse and hyperreality at the horizon, this collection explores the depths of the body in posthuman realities.
With the new realms of our digital lives expanding, we are faced with an eternally rhetorical question: who are we beyond our physical bodies? Is the digital you shaping your pre-existing com- pass?
Through 'Meta Morphism’, Van Herpen expresses the body as an elusive system, rooted in transcience and speaks to a greater message of introspection.
The leitmotif of van Herpen’s history expresses the body in a state of permanent flux, metamorphosing with the milieu, and while the Maison is regarded for its futuristic approach, this season the designer reflects on Ovid's magnus opus poem ‘Metamorphoses’.
At the time of Ovid’s writing, the act of metamorphosis was appreciated in relation to humanity and its place amongst nature, yet Ovid’s retelling exists a relevance today, navigating the ramifications of technology that is constantly complicating the definition of identity. With the ability to recreate our digi- tal twins, the space of soul-searching, losing a sense of self, and finding new realities, are life lessons.
The collection examines the ancient visions of Ovid’s mythology through modern themes of transhumanism, where man and technology ex- ist in eternal fluctuation, thus defying classification, allowing us to question the limits of our self. Resounding the thematic tensions between artifice and nature, the collection is built around three myths, the story of Arachne; the story of Narcissus and finally the story of Daphne and Apollo.
The tragedy of Arachne is translated in fine laces that are gradient dyed and trapped in embroidered webs, causing the trapped spiderwebs to float. Other looks are designed as if Arachne is still weaving them, hundreds of unspun threads float and spin around the body.
The second myth behind the collection evinces the story of Narcissus, who falls in love with his own reflection, slowly languishing to death through self-obsession. The translucent layering and reflective textures of growth in this collection speak to a greater message of introspection. Transparent voluminous drapes echo around the body like ghosts, creating patchworks of shadows, designed to turn inwards on ourselves. Accents of dark blues and amethysts, ochres, metallic silvers and copper intersect the lucid palette. The ‘Narcissus’ gown and coat express the power of self-creation and the contradiction of how self-obsession can ultimatrly cause loos- ing your sense of self.
The allusion to Daphne and Apollo is betokened through the finale look, embodying the very moment that Daphne transforms into a laurel tree, while the 'Glitched Growth' dress and other looks mimic the alternate stages of Daphne’s metamorphoses, diffusing the creation of plant and bone structures growing together. These looks are designed around body objectification and imagine future metaverse hybrids of Daphne’s myth in which the body is boundlessly transformed and where man and nature are indistinguishable.
In keeping with the Maison’s collaborative spirit, this season, Iris van Herpen partners with sculptor Casey Curran, bequething a prospective statue of a future Daphne, bursting from the centre of the runway. Daphne’s sculpture transforms through herbose creatures blooming from her skeleton, at her chest appears a large crevice, revealing her mechanical heart pulsating inside, pertaining to the notion that the elusiveness of identity means that nothing can perish.

They are delicate, transcendental, futuristic and just breathtaking.
I love how she takes inspiration from nature, but not just the more romanticized or well-known parts of it. Most of the models looked like they were shedding some older skin, like how many insects molt, into something more mature and beautiful. Absolutely loved the blue-indigo color of that one dress 😍💙
the "false faces" to deter predators, long tentacles or maybe tendrils... I'm blown away, it's amazing!
I saw some really strong inspiration from exoskeletons, insects wings and human bones as well.
Yes, they had a gothic skeletal quality to them, which as at the same time beautiful, but also menacing. I love it.

Iris' work will be studied by fashion and art students in the future, I really think she will be heralded as one of the most influential designers of our generation.

I'm not a fan of fashion parades or designer clothes, but this collection is AMAZING!! They look like futuristic humans wearing alien skins on their bodies, absolutely fascinating and so creatively made! Like watching a sci fi cast ♥️
If fairies/sprites were real and had a fashion show in this era, it would look like this. In an era when haute couture has practically become a comedy, I'm glad that real artistry still exists. Fantastic work!

I have always loved Iris van Herpen. This is the only opportunity where we can use ethereal and sculptural in the same sentence to describe her work. Truly a blacksmith of garments.
I love her. I hope to be cool enough to wear one of her pieces one day. She's incredible. Her designs are incredible. They make me feel like I'm watching a Star Trek episode (that's a really good thing!!!)

These designs are amazing! The girls are literally walking art installations. Nobody compares to Iris!
This collection took my breath away. Each outfit could be looked at for hours because of how wonderfully intricate the are. The orange and copper dress with the corset of golden metal was just wonderful especially with those rose gold -flame heels. It’s just spectacular.
What a beautiful show. When I see Iris at the end, I can’t help but yell out, “we love you sister”. What an amazing spirit and contributor to art, beauty and love.

Honestly, I loved her 'ocean inspired' a bit more- but I LOVE how she's willing to try new things, push her envelope. Know she will continue to grow and change as time goes by, it is going to be a joy to watch!

Her work reminds me of angel wings, all carefully redesigned to make a masterpiece. Can you imagine walking down the aisle in a wedding gown she created…her work is so fluid…almost entrancing.
I love the striking similarities between this collection and the patterns in nature, like on insects and other creatures hence the name which I think meant metamorphosis. I remember observing these exact patterns, the smallest of details on insects, closely and I am amazed how accurately they were able to depict it. And they absolutely nailed every little detail. Insane!

I watched the show, read the description, and then watched it again, amazing how intriguing and gorgeous they are on their own and then are brought to a whole new light when you learn the inspirations behind them. Beautiful work as always and a designer I will always be looking up to!

There is no one, and I truly mean NO ONE, who designs like Iris...I lack the vocabulary to really describe her work. It's art at the highest level, textile art which takes me to a unique place of awe, wonder, and pure joy!
I love how you can look at them and be "oh, they're actually still clothes". The type of custom that just fits so seamlessly. It's weird, it's new, it's enchanting. The clothes are eye catching but they don't make you disregard the person wearing them. The designs don't make you feel like they're over the top at all and in fact appear seemingly minimal despite what your eyes are seeing. Beautiful set this time again.
IVH is the only designer I absolutely love. Everytime I see a show, I love every piece, shoe, etc. There's never anything to dislike imo. Simply stunning everytime!
A fantastic collection presented beautifully! I loved the choice of models, how naturally some of them walked and how beautifully they were styled. The gowns themselves are to die for (I left the biggest praise for last) and I cannot get over the fact that I will never wear one, or even come close to be able to making one.

These models deserve so much credit for their work here. These outfits probably aren't easy and all to walk a runway in, and they make it look so natural!
Also it's already been said, but dang the designs are cool. The way these ideas are incorporated into the clothing strikes a perfect balance--abstract, but still recognizable. Ovid's a favorite of mine, and I love the way ideas from his writing are incorporated here. It's just super creative, and fun to witness.

So many symmetrical pieces that have to lay absolutely just right. This show musth have been a freaking nightmare to put on. To the designers, dressers, seamstresses, etc, you hit it out of this world into another galaxy. Job well done.

I've honestly never liked fashion that much, I just put on something that hopefully matches and get on about my business. I very rarely wear makeup and only straighten my very long hair if I do anything at all besides pulling it out of my face. This is different. This is ART. This is a new and a organically beautiful new type of body flowing artwork I've never seen before. This is so visually fulfilling. I feel a calm yet inspired feeling when watching this and taking in the pieces. My goodness this creator is so innovative and daring. This is full of feminine vibes and such gorgeous structured materials into such a flowie and soo needed manner. I absolutely adore every single piece and all the hair and accessories added to each one too. I love this ARTIST!!! GREAT SHOW!
