  • While on my trip a while back when looking for the CCC IRL's, I had made my way a bit further north through a couple of towns I had been curious about. But before I could even get out of the town of Gunnison where the IRL was filmed, this truck comes flying down the highway in the opposite direction! A complete surprise that made my day. Being that it was a winding 2-lane road with no shoulder and many cars, I knew that turning around was hopeless so I continued on for a bit in hopes of finding a side road, but the next road a couple minutes up was actually the first road to an entire little city, Manti City. The carts were all blank, but that's nothing unusual in Utah so I didn't confirm that this was where the CSL was running, and it also seemed odd that a CSL would run in a town that didn't have CSL dumpsters. Later I began noticing the dirt marks left on the carts by the grippers and that's what told me this had to be where it runs. To my surprise, there was still a lot of route left at nearly 2pm when I arrived. I figured it'd be hopeless to find a city run operation out past noon in a small town like this, but that wasn't the case as they actually do the entire city on Tuesday. Luck being on my side, it turned out that the landfill was right down the road and no more than 30 minutes passed before I found him picking up where he left off. And only upon seeing it on route did I notice that it was a mid-80s White, and not a Whitegmc as I'd assumed when I saw the blue badge on the highway. Unfortunately my only clip of him collecting a 300 gallon container was ruined by sudden, constant blasts of strong wind, so I didn't add that clip.
    A huge thanks goes out to a very friendly driver, I had a blast getting video of your (awesome sounding) truck
    Little side note, on my Socal Maxon video I had initially thought it was powered by an L10 Cummins, and was proven wrong. I do however feel a little more comfortable saying that the truck in this video sure sounds like an L10 to me. Anyone who could confirm or deny that is encouraged to let me know. Thanks for watching
    Update: As of about a month after posting this video, this truck has officially been placed out of service do to a major drive train failure. Unfortunate for sure, but it makes me even happier I managed to find it when I did.

    The Cummins L10 engine used here is a "Power Torque" special version, which produces 240 hp @ 2100 rpm and 900 lb-ft of torque @ 1300 rpm. Some applications had this engine mated to the Allison MT654CR 5-speed close-ratio automatic transmission, but I believe both the HT740 and the HT754CR are better matches for the engine's torque rating.
    Interestingly, both the MT654CR and the HT740 have similar lengths (MT654CR = 36 in. long; HT740 = 37 in. long), as well as torque converter lockup in second and, of course, the torque converters (TC400 series) themselves!
    How to tell which transmission this rig would have used:
    1. if the shift tower reads "R - N - D - 3 - 2 - 1" the transmission is the HT740.
    2. but if it reads "R - N - 1-5 - 1-4 - 1-3 - 1-2 - 1" then the transmission is the MT654CR.

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo 7 лет назад +1

    Whooooaaa!!! Listen to this bloody thing telling the neighbourhood who dominates the area. Talk about some serious character building with this truck, sounds like it gets stronger and stronger by the RPM :P This I one of those garbage trucks where you just can't beat its very throaty and thunderous growl, then of course you've got those thick and distinct puffs of exhaust element. These cylindrical bodies and tailgates are a real sight too, love their kind of uniqueness, especially the fat white rear wheel guards and all that rear overhang. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this a CSL that has a grabber which can't actually empty commercial containers? Just funny the fact it's a CSL doing residential anyway - you reckon they've had this truck for a while or was bought and modified a bit for this location? I could swear years ago I watched a video showing a truck much like this one and I said there's all that intense revving just to lift a small cart over the top, plus with those big significantly heavier duty looking arms than what's needed :D Apart from hearing this thing get moving between stops and get through some gears, I loved his regular use of gradual throttle increase, kind of like the higher the cart gets the higher the RPM rises, then it drops back to idle quickly when dumped. Love the big levers very visible inside the cab, no joystick action here, I'm sure there isn't much of an auto pack feature on this truck too eh? It's understandable why ASL packers are a bit more suited to this kind of job versus this guy having to stop and wait for the pack cycling here and there. Speaking of packing, I would've loved to have seen a view of that beefy blade running through a cycle from behind the cab - mad vantage point right there..... unloading shot would've gone down quite well too! Awesome job catching this beast on video, a pleasure to watch, sounds like a very lucky catch as well.

    I am a big fan of CSL's considering I am serviced by a company that runs a Mack Granite with a Kann CSL, but your guess as far as an engine is possible, A, Cummins L10, Or Cummins M11 and as one has mentioned possibly Cat 3306. I do have another video of 2 old CSL's that'll be uploaded down the road. It didnt have that same raspy sound that the Cat 3306 seemed to have, and given the age I think L10 was the go-to Cummins of the time, so that'd still be my guess. A CSL on residential seems highly inappropriate. It's too noisy and slow for a residential route.

    • @3amrepmike3
      @3amrepmike3  7 лет назад +2

      You might be surprised to know that this arm was initially designed for residential, and is one of the first fully automated arm designs ever made some 50 years ago(with a few changes made to it along the way, most notably that it was originally chain driven). It was later adapted to handle dumpsters and from then on never really saw residential use. With this truck being from the mid-80s, its not hard to imagine why they opted to use this system, as it wasn't terribly old back then. What this truck loses in speed, it more than makes up for in reliability, and is the sole reason this nearly 35 year old truck was still seen on route taking care of business as if it were still brand new. For a small town which only runs their truck one, maybe 2 days a week, its a nice fit. Unfortunately it has since been retired, but not by choice. The engine blew up and they decided that it's served its time lol Now a new Curbtender is said to be handling the routes here in Manti these days.

    • @Trainlover1995
      @Trainlover1995 7 лет назад

      I would think that for a small town, it would be more appropriate to use a single FL. It could collect the dumpsters, and then get the residential carts with a Curotto Can.

    • @3amrepmike3
      @3amrepmike3  7 лет назад

      That's essentially exactly what this does. Instead of dumpsters though they have 300 gallon containers in their place which this truck handles with ease. In addition they dont have to fork out 25K for a Curotto can or worry about significantly increased maintenance requirements of a front loader with Curotto. They still do everything with this one truck.

What an amazing sounding rig and boy does that thing blows smoke too haha I love how you let some of the shots run long after he drove out of view just to hear the noise. 5:10 was a nice clip with the river running through. That 300 clip would've been pretty neat to see, sucks the clip got ruined. So does this truck run only once a week if it's used to service the entire city on Tuesdays?
