  • Robert Förstemann famously generated 700 W for over one minute to toast bread. Can I?

Engineer here: A) Love your work. 'Above average' is a brilliant concept. Also, this video was hilarious, and I know how hard it is to be genuinely funny. B) You're generating 700W. One horsepower = 746 watts. So, this toasty output is 94 per cent of one horsepower. The reason this is so difficult to sustain for more than a few tens of seconds lies in the word 'horse'... (David beating Goliath was an anomaly.) C) This exercise highlights how preposterously accessible vast amounts of energy are, in the modern world. If you want toast, the options are: Kill yourself on a bike, or flick a switch.

If you want to squeeze out a few extra Watts, eliminate the sway from your upper body by fixing your arms in place, nip your shoulder blades together and pull back on the bars with your lats. This will lock your upper body in position and ensure more of your effort will be put through your legs. Watch any track cyclist sprinting, their upper body barely moves. Same with mountain bikers on steep climbs. Makes a huge difference. Great video, looking forward to episode 2...

Hi Mark! It's a pity I discovered your channel only a few days ago. I have seen Forstemann's video earlier and there are a few things worth to comment.
Most normal strength men can put out 700w for a few seconds even without training. An entire minute, yes even 30s, is a completely different thing.
Bradley Wiggins has put out 608w for 4 minutes. This means he possibly at that moment could have done 700w, or very close to, for 1 minute. Without standing up after 30s.
And this with maraton runner thin legs!
Robert Forstemann has legs making many bodybuilders envious.
And he can put out 2000+ watts in a burst. It is very clear that 700w for a minute cannot be very hard for him. The only explanation is that it was a huge power drain in the equipment. He should be able to put out 1000w for a minute and that without standing up after half the time.
An important thing to understand is that Wiggin's performance despite the small amount of muscle mass is possible because he used a very high cadence. The "lack" of muscle mass is compensated by a very high oxygen uptake. And this is noticeable when comparing different cyclists: for thinner guys it works better to pedalling faster than for guys with beefier legs. At least when it comes to endurance races. But even a beefy guy puts out the max power at a higher cadense.
Conclusion: the correlation between Bradly Wiggins 608w for 4 minutes and Robert Forstemann's 700w for 1min(and that by standing up after half of the time) simply does not add up.
Comparing these guys physically is like comparing a maraton runner to a body builder. The maraton runner wins hands down for long periods of time.
But the bodybuilder wins for short time. For a

I would think he's closer to 1000 for a minute since world tour guys are in the 8-900 range (think MVDP). The 1 minute power is a weird one. Theres a lot of aerobic contribution, even for a short 1 minute effort. Maybe thats not a real number from his effort and something made up since your bread wasn't even close to toasted at a minute. Maybe it was 700 for two minutes? Ok i think thats too mich thinking about toasted bread..😑
