I love that their philosophy on suit only challeneges is just "the players will find a way, don't worry about it"
In his hitman repetition video he showed the chain explosion double kill.
Someone will figure it out and share it.
Isle of Sgail SASO on Master difficulty was very fun
On one hand it’s a bit scummy they didn’t plan out a couple more viable paths in the levels for SA/SO challenges but I suppose it only makes completing them all the more thrilling
ikr
@@burgbass "scummy"
Oh, you're supposed to find a photograph to get the robot to kill him? I just timed it right so he walked into the line of fire.
That’s clever!
Actually you can also kill sierra knox with this method lol
This surely wasn't intended to be the solution but seems they have made it possible.
Same. Didn’t think about a photo of him at first and had to reload like 5 times to get the timing just right
@@QuinnArgo One of the other great things in Hitman is that while there's a few things they've intended, they make sure nearly anything is possible. There's a great video online for this level from when they were still demoing the game where one player decided he wasn't going to take the scripted solutions - he was going to throw the bomb onto the track, and blow Sierra up manually. It took him quite a bit to get the timing right, but it worked, because she wasn't just a scripted graphic on the track - she was a physical object in the game, and you could interact with her and the car, even then.
As an architect, the bit about avoiding dead ends to not make the player feel trapped nicely mirrors dead ends in real buildings - Building codes actually pretty strongly limit the length of 'dead end corridors' in order to limit the area of a building an occupant can be trapped in the event of a fire.
That so? Neat. Learn something new every day.
Yes! I'm not an architect and don't know one, but I heard/read that one indicator of a bad building design, especially talking about malls/public areas, is when you can't circle around it.
I love midlessly roaming around malls, big and small, and I hate it when I reach a dead end so I have to awkwardly turn back and pretend I misstepped or something.
@@Sonofavenger Yep. Very interesting. 😊
I'm reminded of how when Robert Ebert was talking about how he didn't consider video games to be art, my first reaction was basically "No duh, you're a movie critic while video games design is closer to a mix between architecture and sculpture, with possibly a bit of novel writing as well if it's story heavy."
@@lnsflare1 Roger Evert didnt even knkw what a good movie was, why would anyone listen to him about video games lol
An IKEA Hitman level needs to happen.
@@isviewer a jysk level then?
So an infinite sandbox?
holy shit, that actually a pretty good idea XD
Name the level "I Kill Ya"
Sole IKEA store is already too small by the new Hitman standards, make it huge shopping mall with IKEA as one section of it.
The moment I heard Agent 47's VA, I knew the context would be twice awesome.
I love it too! xD
And an ad.

David fucking Bateson!!!
This game is a masterpiece. I love playing this over and over.
blood money is a masterpiece. this is ok
@@DGMUSICisGOOD blood money in my opinion is a bit overrated. It’s a great game, but not the best in the franchise. It’s telling that when the game came out players thought the formula was getting a bit stale. It certainly has the best AI in the series, but the world of assassination trilogy’s AI isn’t far behind. The one thing that puts The World of Assassination games ahead of blood money for me is that it’s not only a natural progression of blood money, but also of absolution, and the three games are also just one game. If they were to remake any of the previous hitman games they would use the system Hitman 3 will put in place to just add them into the current plot.
Isnt Philosophy, Furries and communism more your thing Quetzal?
@Matthew Anthony that’s the actual name of the game and the trilogy, the world of assassination.
@@DGMUSICisGOOD Nah! Blood Money's overrated af.
Now I'm hyped for Hitman: Ikea...
That'd be too close to home considering a Mother and her adult son got stabbed to death in Ikea.
He just made them a level for their next game xxDD
I think Ikea is more like a battle royale map
Sugárzó Palacsinta I thought Hitman: IKEA was the best possible idea, but now I want to see an IKEA map for a battle royale game...
Taylor Hancock Fortnite season 37
I love the addition of dev interviews/commentary. Hearing the thought processes from the guys actually building the games is super interesting
Yeah, and it also reduces the chances of him getting something wrong or losing the focus on a video...
Yea, great video. Very entertaining and interesting.
Not to mention how neat it is that they're clearly familiar with his work, Eskil referenced one of his videos when talking about their design, must be pretty cool to actually be known by really great game designers!
I love that they referenced one of your older videos on hitman.
Yes
They know the community. They're listening
I wish they didn't make hitman 2 always-online
@@kanalkucker14 I'm sure that the always online thing is the publisher's idea and not the developer's.
I know... :/
I love their thoughts on Suit Only. I had the exact same feeling when I first played each level. It felt like if I wasn't following the Mission Stories, it was near impossible to find ways to eliminate the targets. And yet, a couple attempts later, I was inside the Kronstadt building, on the top floor, in the classic suit. There's something so rewarding hearing that the developers haven't made it an easy task to complete a mission Suit Only, and that I have done so for all the missions in both Hitman and Hitman 2.
I will never forget finishing Paris for first time. After finishing the mission for first time, I looked at challenge list and saw SASO challenge. I was like "There is way I can do it". Now I plan most of my SASO runs on my own.
Love this feeling of Hitman. The information you know about game mechanics and map really pays off.
Same. When I first saw it, I thought you needed to be an expert on the map, but I was able to pull it off after a few attempts.
Marrakesh was my first attempt silent and suit only, damn I think I save like 20+ times and I felt like a god after completing it
I think Colorado’s SA/SO is the only one that was truly hellish
@@burgbass Even Colorado isn't super difficult if you know the map well enough, as well as the pathing and routines for each of the targets. I had no idea how I was gonna do an SA/SO run for Colorado before I attempted it, but when I finally got around to it I didn't have anywhere near as much trouble as I thought I would.
Oh hell nah I don't want to die from an assassin disguises as an IKEA table.
That’s a very specific fear you have there. Might want to get that looked at.
“Hello, and welcome to game makers toolkit. Today, I want to discuss the genius design of one of my favorite levels in any game, IKEA”

The Austrian IKEA cause a Swedish one would probably be too stereotypical!
Me and my friend were playing hitman once, he killed almost every person in the race track with just 3 screwdrivers, a cleaver, fish 2 tin cans and a pistol.

You actually had David Bateson to lend his voice AND the devellopers for this video?!
Normally your content is extremely well made and a great watch.
But today you lifted it up to a whole new level!
Awesome work.
I love how in love IOI, Jakob and Eskil actually are with their game. Their excitement and the proud smiles are super wholesome. Their community engagement is also amazing, we need more devs like IO
If only they actually tried on the dlc
@@jackwithrow536 is it worth the $30?
I enjoyed hearing about the iterative qualities of the level design processes, and cackled when hearing about the suit-only moment. It's a succinct look into a deep philosophy in the Hitman series. Even going as far back as Hitman 2 with its introductory level, players are able to consistently perform well in levels without using disguises. It speaks volumes about the actual consistency of the gameplay in this series. Amazing video, as always.
Yeah it's kind of a reverse psychology level design situation. You would think Suit Only means it's easier to design the level around it because you don't have to deal with disguises, but it's exactly the opposite. This means that the target shouldn't freely wander out into areas where 47 can roam in a suit without trespassing, because it would make it too easy. The entire level, its target loops, and assassination opportunities have to work for Suit Only, which can be incredibly difficult to pull off.
Hitman always prefers quality over quantity in maps.
@@amanpreetgill7564 Can I play Hitman 2 without having played the first one (2016)? I'm liking the levels and free world implementation on this so if the first game is more linear, I might skip it.
@@cheesecakelasagna Hitman 2016 is very good and I wouldn't recommend skipping it. I played Hitman 2 first then went back to 2016 when I felt the need to have more levels to explore and found the 2016 levels to be just as, and some cases more fun than the Hitman 2 levels
Always? Do you forget that disaster Absolution?
@@cheesecakelasagna I would recommend skipping 2016. Buy hitman 2 with the GOTY Legacy Pack. You get both games.
@@MechanicalMooCow that's what I did during the sale. Essentially 2 triple A title games for less than 30 bucks. I also bought absolution. I thought it was okay, but after the first play through. I never want to replay it to discover other killing methods. But till today I've played the tutorial map of hitman 2 for like 10 times. Will other games sneak repetition into their levels to boost up their play time, hitman makes you want to keep repeating a level

And that's how we in Germany would pronounce it aswell.
@@HandsomeGamerGuy cool
This level is an absolute masterpiece. Initially, I hated it, because of how overwhelming it was. But I ended up absolutely loving after I got to know the level better.
It's so cool that you got to speak with the devs on how they approach designing a level, and I am so pleased hearing that opening from Agent 47.
Hitman level on Luxury Cruise ship. I always dream that somehow
*pushes everyone overboard*
This would be amazing
SirDarkon IF isn’t there a mission like that in Blood Money?
That was somewhat in the first Hitmans' tutorial.
Yeah they made the mistake of making the aesthetic deliberately fake, made of wood. They should have just made it look like a real ship on a real harbour then people would consider it to be a real level.@@tasertag7513
@@world-tour I can't agree more.
1:52 "I am Young Liam Neeson wearing a cap."
They should make a Hitman level in a ComicCon with loads of refferences to gaming.
That would be a fun lil meta lvl
Now to get the disguise from that 47 cosplayer...
Do an E3 level and you have to assassinate Todd Howard
Alternatively, E3 2008 and you can kill Reggie while he’s on the Wii Fit
“ we made a map the we thought would be impossible to complete SA suit only, they then completed it” my only guess would be that this map is Colorado because that is near impossible to do SA/SO
Isle of Sagil is pretty intimidating at a glance too. You have to trespass in about every location, and unlike Colorado you're in very open areas with alot of people.
had no problems with colorado, bangkok is where its at.
@@Kontaras987 agreed, took me about 2 hours to figure out and complete consistently
Thanks for the amazing quality of these videos!
One thing I like about hit man is what makes the levels unique, more so in hitman 2016 than hitman 2.
Paris: a large map with lots of people, where each level of the building goes up in difficulty
Sapienza: a small Italian town filled with stories and unique locations and events
Marrakech: tbh this map doesn’t bring anything new but is still fun
Bangkok: this my is just plain boring in my opinion luckily the next 2 redeem it.
Colorado: a large map where the entire map is a “fortress” almost everyone is a guard and one wrong move means death
Hokkaido: a map where you cannot bring any equipment and access to the different facilities is solely based on disguise
I'm sorry, but Bangkok was amazing
Coolio Star Stache what did you like about it?
@@thelordofforeheads2839 Everything. The Himmapan Hotel feels like a place I would actually stay at. The opportunities weren't as creative as the other missions, yes, but were still so much fun to do, especially considering it's when the game holds your hand less. The targets were also really complex. I even felt real sympathy for Jordan Cross during the "Intervention" opportunity
@@cooliostarstache5474 the challenges were unintuitive, SASO was complete BS and doing anything on the map was just tedious.
i hate it, but its probably because the recording camera thong you destroy to get rid of camera evidence didn't spawn and all the fun from the level just evaporated as i was being spotted again and again and couldn't do anything about it. But i guess thats a code problem, not a level problem
Ok. now that opening is creepy...
In the Special Edition packages gotten from one of the conventions, you get a videotape where they record it with your name along with the game. Saw it from another channel which I don't remember.
I don't get it how is it a creepy opening?
@@DjSeptimus Simply unsettling, I'm guessing

I've been waiting for this video! The 'Art of Repetition' episode is the reason why I bought 2016, and put tons of hours into it, and subsequently caused me to pre-order the gold version of Hitman 2.
Just got into Hitman 2016, bought 2 an hour later and 3 is preordered. I got into it in a way I was not expecting. Such a great experience
oh my god everybody needs to play Hitman 2 it is a transformative experience. good video. I never loved the Miami level before this video but now I've got a new appreciation for it.
Whittleton Creek LOTYAY imo
Isle of Sgail is my fav level just due to the literal fortress aspect of it and the weirdly creepy music in some of the locations. Every level in Hitman 2 is 10/10 though.
@@BackfallGenius Isle of Sgail gave me an absolute eyes wide shut vibe

Can I play Hitman 2 without having played the first one (2016)? I'm liking the levels and free world implementation on this so if the first game is more linear, I might skip it.
Thinking about the Miami level, how you're basically exploring everything BUT the track, it kind of makes me wonder about a multiplayer game wherein some players are racing, and other players are doing things behind the scenes in the venue off the track. Sort of like Mario Kart meets Spy Party. Events on the track could affect the situation in the venue (an errant turtle shell could end up in the punch bowl), while certain incidents in the venue could affect the situation on the track (someone could mess with a powerup that's about to be put on the track, causing someone's bullet bill to send their car flying into orbit).
Also, getting the devs in was a masterstroke for this video. I never would have thought about snail-houses, Swiss cheese and Ikea before today, but now I have some IDEAS.
Hey, that's a great idea for a game!
That sounds rad. Asymmetrical gameplay is becoming more and more popular, too. Taken to the extreme, you could even have shades of Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, where if one off-track opponent does something sketchy to affect the race, you have to get yourself down to the pit to give your racing teammate instructions on what to do when repercussions kick in. Maybe some sort of track sabotage could make a series of shortcuts inaccessible and you need to figure out which route your teammate needs to take and have him memorize your instructions ahead of time as to not run into a suddenly appearing wall at the last moment. Games like Rollcage and Split/Second had lots of fun with powerups that destroyed parts of the scenery on and around the track to try to trap opponent racers with, and that would naturally create challenges and difficulties if there are also players up to no good in those very buildings. You could make some cool stuff out of that!
while it doesn't have anything to do with cars the general premise sounds a lot like the custom counter strike mode "deathrun" where one or two players can activate various traps while the other players have to run through the corridors baiting the trap operators into activating them
@@fLzii I am quite familiar with the concept of the Death Run. However, I feel like the formula could be further refined with a "Killer Mansion" game mode, where the CTs have to go around a sprawling non-linear level, solve the puzzles and try not to die, while the Terrorists sit around in their secret bunker, setting off traps and summoning monsters in the mansion above, in an effort to keep the CTs from unlocking the bunker and killing them all.
@GmodPlusWoW that sound's pretty good actually maybe make the traps and puzzles semi random like tilesets in various dungeon crawlers for longevity. might be hard to get working in source though except maybe with copy and pasting the villa and using random teleports on mapspawn
12:03 "seasoned ikea veterans"
They come from SCP 3008.
Another really interesting video. Your Art of Repetition video was actually the video that caused me to find you. Add to that I've recently jumped back into Hitman 2 and I feel like this video is an odd sort of going back to the beginning of me finding this channel.
17:30 - this pretty much sums up why this game never feels boring even after binging it for hours and hours. every level is designed with different "guidelines" that it needs a fresh approach from the player every time.
Sometimes you add videos to a special playlist.
But rarely, you find a channel like this that is the playlist itself. Every video is as useful as the other, you can't choose a few videos to take, you need the whole channel.
the thing that attracts me so much to these games, and indeed, most stealth games, is the clockwork nature of them. everything is pristine, a beautiful dance, a cuckoo clock the size of big ben.
i've more than once failed a level in one of these sorts of games just to see the clock play out its dance. not often, but more than once.
This video is oozing quality. I'm a huge Hitman fan and it was a pleasure to see how much effort went into this. From the developers interview to the commentary and post production. I'd only point out that you did reuse some gameplay footage a bit too much in my opinion.
Most levels in the original Hitman 2: Silent Assassin were also very fun to master, like Malaysia, Japan, Russia and India! It's still so much fun.
Imagine your starting work with the questions “wouldn’t it be cool if X” every time
The exploding golf ball is one of my favorite methods. I found the gold ball while wondering around in the safe house then realized my target plays golf at one point and obviously put two and two together. Makes for a very satisfying assassination
This was awesome having the developers input and stuff I always love hearing what developers have to say about the in and outs of their games make me looks at the games differently and I kinda wanna play a hitman games now
I love how this video was a combination of analysis and an interview with the actual creatives behind the game.
Easily my game of the year for 2018. Loved the dev commentary.
I spent a significant amount of time on Finish Line, and it’s easily one of my favorite levels of all time in a video game.
Such an incredible piece of work. Obviously requiring tons of collaboration with io that payed off in the form of second-to-none production value. I'm trying to do similar work as this with my interviews with developers, but I take my hat off to you as always Mark. You're truly in a league of your own!
This game is amazing. Respect to the developers
Please make more of these Hitman 2 map videos, I live this video and the game. I hope you will do Mumbai next.
Really well done video, probably my favourite done on the hitman franchise. I learned a lot and gained a very unique perspective on the assembly and inner workings of the maps. Just awesome dude!
Hit man boss keys spin off please!
Thanks for this awesome video. Hitman 2 is the first game I've played in this series and it's quickly shaping up to be one of my all-time favourites. The open-ended nature of the levels is addictingly
fun and I'm discovering new things even after 150 hours of playtime; spanning over the season 1 and 2 levels. Also the fact that they took the time and effort to port over the old maps into the sequel is just so good, it truly feels like a full package with the legacy maps.
I wish there were certain hitman levels like a rich/cool shopping center (think Singapore airport but a mall), an airport terminal, a skyscraper, Times Square (with buildings), a war-torn city, and a factory/sweatshop in like China
i started playing yesterday and have 10 hours (and counting) on this level alone trying to see everything there is. the detail is insane. i heard that one of their levels in hitman 3 took a whole year to make.
This episode brought to you by Nvidia Ansel
Not gonna lie, it came in handy.
Great video Mark! It's fantastic to see developers open up to you and become part of GMTK. More like this please, if it's even possible!
I didnt know much about hitman before watching this, I actually want to play them now, they seem really interesting
I have been playing Hitman 2016 + 2018 for a few weeks now and have so far managed to get through the entire main story and fully master the first 3 levels. The thing that keeps me coming is the fact that every single level has so much to learn and explore that you can never quite be finished, and as you beat the challenges you learn more and more of the shortcuts just by the off chance while you are nearby.
I also love the little Easter eggs like the kraken in one level, or the fact that when your the flamingo you can just flap your arms and fly away. It gives the game a heart as well as a very serious and blank face unlike an unnamed protagonist. ;-)
That opening was really cool
I played Hitman in 2020 a lot and enjoyed it enough to do all the silent assassin suit only challenges without any help. Then I picked up Hitman 2 and decided to go straight for silent assassin, Robert was so hard to get to but it only made me appreciate the game even more.
Currently watching this in Miami.

I remember being a bit surprised, "what do you mean the store is closed?! I have all this loot!"
I love that the guys he interviewed were as bald as Hitman.
I can confirm that you can do every map specific _Classics Challenge_ (No Evidence, Suit Only, Silent Assassin, Sniper Assassin) in a single Master-mode run. The Sniper Assassin part makes it interesting, because know you have to manage the transport of an open carry rifle or a briefcase.
It usually meant ALOT of area clearing via knockouts and you will need better put that one save to good use.

Huge Hitman fan and they really nailed it in Hitman 2. Beautifull work. I think I propose one time this feature on the forum but for the issue of waiting for your target to be in the correct position, I think they should add an option to speed up time on the spots where you can "Blend In". That would be cool.

Thanks so much for this video! I got into Hitman with the 2016 version and I play every level the same way the first time around- I go in blind and run around finding all the nooks and crannies and secrets for hours before killing anyone, trying to figure out how each set of game mechanics interacts. They are completely correct about the way the breadcrumbs of an overhead conversation or an item lying on a counter can make your brain start ticking over. Or the thrill of finding a back entrance or a pipe to climb and feeling like you’re actually a super sneaky assassin. Afterwards I go look at the challenge list, reload and start ticking them off. 😄
