    That's the problem. Genres and audiences don't exist anymore. Everything has to be every genre appealing to every audience all at once. Does it work? No. But we won't know it doesn't work until we've done it 20,000 times.

    You know I know Splinter Cell Conviction was a real deviation and all that but it's still one of my favorite stealth games of all time. It had a sharpness of creative vision that few games have. It knew what it was and it delivered on it extremely well. They didn't succeed at just making fast stealth feel natural, they succeeded at making it feel GOOD. Blacklist is definitely the more rounded game but I appreciate how creative and artistic Conviction was. How focused it was. I think a game like that in a series is cool to get every now and again.

As much as it's the big companies fault for making gaming what it is today , it's our fault for still backing them and purchasing their garbage.

    The problem is the players. They lack the patience to wait, stalk the guards and plan their strategy. All they want is 1st person shitter games. Fast and furious, a walking gun that shoots at everything that moves, The slower you play, the more things you observe and get to appreciate the ideas and the work that has gone into them.
    In Thief The Metal Age, they traveled to Europe and got thousands of picture from old style interior architecture and design. And it shines iThe Bank mission.
    Yesterday, i was playing Star Wars Outlaws for the first time. While crawling inside some vents, i did notice spider webs on the corners, which my character removed while passing by.

      But I do agree that not every stealth game needs to be "hardcore forced stealth" where you either fail the mission for getting spotted instantly, after X times of alarm or just die almost instantly. Especially if it plays in the timelines like Assassins Creed does it's nice to be able to actually fight your way through (I honestly always deemed the combat too easy, didnt play the "newer" ones of the past almost 10 years tho) - same with the newer Ghost Recon games (after they finally were done with fully trying to copy CoD, so starting with Wildlands), only real issue with them is that all of Ubisofts games just feel like they're scared of actual difficulty aside of dying relatively quick on higher difficulty settings, enemies not spotting you if they turn their head, their sight line being heavily limited, bodies despawning quickly (especially in Ghost Recon if you're sniping, making it an almost guaranteed way to never even get spotted) - generally it feels like the devs had a ton of good ideas for mechanics that would play well for every approach, yet most of them are merely found by accident because there's no real use case to them (either hitting deadline, or once again being afraid of people not wanting to play it if it has any real level of difficulty - which I wouldn't even be able to blame them for given just how many people acted like the drones would be so hard to deal with in Breakpoint).

    While I've never been good at it and I've yet to play the Thief series, I really like the idea of "ghosting" in a stealth game where you get through the level or objective without killing or being seen and leaving enemies undisturbed. The problem with most stealth games or games that have stealth is at some point you are forced to kill or dispatch targets. Older stealth games seem to allow this playstyle better without the game ending up a silent action game.

  • @UnabridgedGamer
    @UnabridgedGamer 4 месяца назад +6

    They became indies? That's what became of stealth games. You've got horror stealth with Harvest Hunt. Sci-fi/fantasy stealth with Ereban: Shadow Legacy and the Styx games. THIEF-y stealth with The Dark Mod, Gloomwood, & Filcher. Metal Gear-y stealth with Unmetal, The Chameleon, & Undetected - the same dev behind the last two of those is now making Splinter Cell homages too. These aren't even particularly niche stealth titles either - many of them have reviewed incredibly well.
    Meanwhile AAA, a sector devoted to mass-market appeal at all cost, aren't interested in giving you precisely the kind of experiences that aren't fitting their business model. They don't care. The Indie/AA-sector supports the same scale and budget as the titles you grew up nostalgic with, and so they can keep those genres alive. Sure, sometimes we'll get a Sniper Elite, Hitman, or Death Stranding from the AAA sector, but those are rarities to be cherished.

Aside from that the gaming industry has definitely really changed. Unreal Tournament may not be a stealth game, but there was supposed to be an Unreal Tournament continuing the story from UT3, in my opinion. Now they got jokes for games and since it's mostly about money, you won't find what you want necessarily. Heck, if I could code I would've stayed old school when it comes to making games.

As for the Dishonored series I believe those games only make sense, in relation to their premise & design, as stealth titles. I played both releases/all DLCs in that mode & consider them the best sneaky gaming I've had outside of Splinter Cell. Likewise Prey & Deathloop are at their best, least as I'm concerned, worked though slowly while hidden in the shadows.

    Splinter Cell Conviction and Blacklists co op modes were absolutely awesome. A co op centered stealth game leaning so far into the co op aspect like army of two would be just awesome, each player either having to work together to hit one objective or having to split up to take on two at once(Like reaching two terminals across the level from each other), or an AI hunter that behaves like the mercs in spies vs mercs that one player has to gain the attention of and the other has to do a silent takedown from behind. There's so much they could add to the splinter cell formula if they leaned into the co op aspect. Even to the point where they flesh out spies vs mercs into something more streamlined.

    I could see a real stealth based battle Royale being interesting. The dev would have to find a map size that would allow stealth without making the game turn into people creeping around doing nothing. Maybe there's 2 teams and one has weapons while the others are set loose to try to survive while being hunted and the team being hunted can sneak up on a hunter and kill them to get their gear and maybe even use it as a disguise. Every now and then the location of the prey would be revealed to incentivise movement.

      Honestly, I like it as a game on its own merits, but I don't like it as a Splinter Cell game. The earlier games in the series gave you the option to avoid killing entirely, and required a little more care to remain hidden (crouching wasn't automatically completely silent, the suppressed firearms could alert guards because silencers don't actually make firearms silent, and there were more light levels than complete darkness and fully lit), and allowed you to move bodies around (typically to hide them to avoid raising the alarm, but you could just as easily put them into a guard's patrol route if you really wanted to. Chaos Theory was the one to remove the whole "alarm gets raised if a body isn't hidden, regardless of if you killed all the guards" and the "x amount of alarms is a game over" from earlier games in the series; allowing a more action based approach if you wanted to take it but still leaving you vulnerable enough that striking from the stealth was better than going in guns blazing. It was by far the best game in the series imo, simply for allowing a variety of approaches in a way that Conviction didn't.

    Styx is a dilogy of games that should be a must play for stealth fans.

I do love the new Hitman games but I think it's not stealthy enough, like I want to be climbing through vents, scaling buildings or ab-sailing down them and hiding from cameras by going into the shadows.

    Although mainstream stealth seems to be dead and buried, we still have some nice fan releases (mainly centered around Thief), such as the amazing Black Parade and the solid engine for fan missions that is the Dark Mod. Want stealth games recommendations?
    Play Shadow Tactics: Blades of Shogun and Desperados. I played Shadow Tactics and it's awesome. It's a top down third person game where you control up to 5 unique characters each with their own abilities and playstyles, BUT they all HAVE TO play stealth. 4/5 of these characters have minimal health points and will die in 2-4 hits, so if you alert two enemies at once you're basically dead. The game plays with sightlines, luring enemies and setting up ambushes where you can take down multiple enemies at once perfectly unnoticed.
    I hope you like them :)

    I just did a play through of Metro 2033 and last light and those games have great stealth mechanics. Not necessarily stealth games at their core but you can definitely play it that way if you want. I tend to like more straightforward fps games but other games like the Deus Ex and dishonored series are very engaging to play stealthily. No kill runs for those games can be tedious but very rewarding.

    You should check out Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 1&2. They are lots of fun and have elements that are similar to Splinter Cell, Hitman, Metal Gear, and Deus Ex. Each mission takes place in a large open area and you can approach objectives in whatever order you want and select your gear loadout. You use stealth tactics both for sniping from afar and sneaking around enemy bases.

    Dude, a stealth BR sounds great. I remember having watched Hunger Games more than one year after its release and imagining how a video game adaptation could work.
    Just imagine the posibilites depending on the setting. It could be about survivors, kind of like TLOU factions but with more varierty. Or spies vs spies, with all the verticality of the Splinter Cell games.
    Human shields, silent takedowns, traps, counter traps, gadgets, some action elements but heavily discouraged due to limited ammo or hard weapon handling. The options are limitless.

    To be completely fair with ghost recon wildlands:
    I still remember when it came out and I went to play with my friend.We would approach things with stealth and keep to it as long as convenient. At the time we were thinking the hardest difficulty was too easy and we were not having issues.
    The other half of our r6 group had been also playing, and that half was what I considered the "better" half of the 5. So to my complete surprise they said they had to drop difficulty because the game was too hard for them. Why was that? Well, they had thrown stealth completely out the window.

    • @Unknown_Genius
      @Unknown_Genius 4 месяца назад

      Both was too easy.
      GR is theoretically great for the open approaches they allow, but it always felt like they're afraid of giving any actual difficulties.
      I bought both: Wildlands and Breakpoint on a massive discount and had my fair share of fun with them, but I still do remember playing the Wildlands Beta with some random guys that were searching for another player who wanted to play it tactically, the stalth failed, 3 went down and the AI acted (and to this day still acts) so slow and uncoordinated that unless you're standing in the middle of the street there's absolutely 0 issue in surviving an onslaught - needless to say none of those 3 wanted to buy the game after witnessing how the AI fails on so many levels, especially on the loud site and after we tried both stealth and loud for 2-3 more hours always finding the same result: Cheap AI made to appease as many people as possible, but none that are actually good on loud & tactical approaches as well as stealth approaches (also rather easy to cheese in a lot of cases).

    In Assassin's Creed games and Ghost Recon games you're able to stealth kill the vast majority of enemies in those games. So they are STEALTH action games. Hitman and Splinter Cell gives the option to go loud too. Does that mean that they aren't real stealth games? There's also, the Sniper Ghost Warrior games and the Last Of Us games. There's really no shortage of Stealth games. There's a shortage of high quality fps that have campaign modes. A lot of them are multiplayer only. Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, F.E.A.R and Black, still stand as being the best fps games. There should be more games like those.

    I don't even think Splinter Cell needs anything big like a big new mode or something, I just really think take Chaos Theory's design philosophy and approach, spin up a new title with next gen visuals, animation, graphics and boom it would be absolutely smashing.
    dw I know your point wasn't "splinter cell needs something new, surely theres tons of new things for it to do", I only word my reply this way because it really is just insane how well Chaos Theoy holds up to this day. Give me that same experience with all the bells and whistles of recent releases and they'd have a banger on their hands.

    If the graphics of the old games are... well, too old, start at 3 (Deadly Shadows), like I did. Grab the fan patches, etc and have fun. For me, only Hitman and Chaos Theory get close.
