    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Oprah Winfrey, actress and media mogul:
"Oh God, I would like to make some really profound analogy about it. I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I'm really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland. I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don't expect that you would be able to be there. And you know for me racism doesn't show up. Nobody's going to come and call me the N-word to my face unless they're a thug on Twitter, you know, or Facebook, you got those Twitter thugs. And so it doesn't show up that way. I was just saying it shows up for me differently. It shows up - I'm in a store and the person doesn't obviously know that I carry the black (credit) card, and so they make an assessment based upon the way I look and who I am. And I cleaned up. I washed my hair and put on my Donna Karan skirt because I know those people in the stores can be very snooty-pooty, you know? So I thought 'let me dress so I don't get turned away', and it happened anyway. So I guess I didn't dress up enough. And I didn't have anything that said, 'I have money.' I wasn't wearing a diamond stud, I didn't have a pocketbook, I didn't wear (Christian) Louboutin shoes. I didn't have anything. I just had on a Donna Karan skirt and top and some sandals, you know? Which you should be able to go in a store looking like whatever you look like and say, 'I'd like to see this.' That didn't happen. It's not an indictment against the country or even that store. It was just one person who didn't want to offer me the opportunity to see the bag. So no apologies necessary from the country of Switzerland. If somebody makes a mistake in the United States, do we apologise in front of the whole country? No!"

    STORYLINE:
Oprah Winfrey said on Tuesday that she regrets the media frenzy that arose after claiming she experienced racism during a recent trip to Switzerland.
The billionaire media mogul made the comments at Monday's premiere of "The Butler" in Los Angeles.
In a recent interview with "Entertainment Tonight", Winfrey said that a clerk at Trois Pommes, a pricey Zurich boutique, had refused to show her a handbag.
Winfrey said she was told she "will not be able to afford" the 38-thousand dollar (28.5 thousand euro) price tag.
Swiss tourism officials and the boutique owner apologised for the incident last week, but on Monday Winfrey insisted there was no need.
"I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I'm really sorry that it got blown up," she said. "I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland."
"I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don't expect that you would be able to be there," continued Winfrey. "And, you know, for me racism doesn't show up. Nobody's going to come and call me the N-word to my face unless they're a thug on Twitter, you know, or Facebook."
"I'm in a store and the person doesn't obviously know that I carry the black (credit) card and so they make an assessment based upon the way I look and who I am," she added.

Oprah should not have apologized for someone else’s negative behavior. She has a right to name the store and even the employee who treated her with indifference because it can happen again.

Happened to me in Rodeo Drive at Gucci. I wanted to see a bag, after I looked at it, I told the sales women thank you but its not what I wanted and she told me "At least now you can say you touched a Gucci" . Well this didn't sit well with me as she assumed I could not afford it. Then I asked her to look at my purse (which was a Gucci) and asked her what kind is my bag. She said oh this is one of our bags. I told her yes, by then a manager overheard this, came and asked if there was a problem. I said yes and explained what she had done. Well the manager was very apologetic, however, I told the saleswomen" I can afford anything in this store, but the only way you can is through your employee discount " and walked out the door!!

That could have quite possibly been a sales ploy. It's using people egos. They might have hoped you bought it just to show them up. I worked with a sales guy and he would use the line "if money is a problem I understand" Just for this reason. In fact, he only pulled this tactic on people he in fact knew had money!

This happened to my sisters and I in the Gucci store… they stood around and sent us the young black associate without hesitation. They assumed we couldn’t afford any of the bags. My sister caught on to what was happening and said we are leaving. We left and went into to LV store and brought a couple of bags came out and went back into the Gucci store with our LV purchase. Well let me tell you the change in attitude lol! They were falling all over themselves to help and brought out the Champagne 🥂 haha… we politely asked for the young black associate so she could receive all the commission..🙌🏽

Good for you!! 👏🏾 👌🏽❤️. It’s absolutely disgraceful of the staff in that Gucci store to assume you couldn’t afford any of the bags!! As a black man it makes me feel angry how they treated you. It is direct and clear racism. And yet you would still get idiots who would argue that it’s only ‘ignorance’ and not racism. They used a clear racist stereotype to discriminate against you. However, I’m proud of how you humiliated them later on. It’s nice you still went back in and gave the black associate the commission. Nice touch!! 👌🏽❤️

Several years ago I went to a Volvo car dealership in Maryland. I had always liked them and had decided to purchase one. I was dressed in jeans and a nice blouse, but casual. I am a white woman and at that time in my mid forties. When I asked the salesman the price he replied "if you have to ask the price then you can't afford it." Well, I could afford it, but I never purchased a Volvo. I have always loved Oprah. She has always had an amazing spirit and done wonderful things with her wealth. May God continue to bless her.

I was 6 months pregnant, was painting my daughters nursery so was in painting clothes and was rushing to the dealer about an hour before it closed as I knew exactly what Volvo I wanted, ( Cross Country) and was only there to purchase. I was ignored by every single sales person and finally the finance manager came out of the building. He said that he had been watching me from the window and noticed that I was not being served and could he help? I said yes, that's true I am being ignored and I was perfectly aware that I had just been "typed". I pointed to the car I wanted and I said "I want that car" can you sort it out for me please? Deal done! I had already done my research and I was just there to purchase.

Thats the rule no. 1, in my opinion, of being a professional salesperson that you treat your customers with respect weather they buy something or not. It's not only about being black in Europe, it's a class thing. I went into a 'country' store to buy a working coat. It was raining and I came straight from the woods covered in sawdust and mud, and asked for a waterproof, windproof coat. The woman looked me up and down and said doubtfully; "Well there's this one, but it's a Barbour, it's VERY expensive." then did a double take when I said price wasn't an issue for the right coat. She assumed because I came in a van and was obviously working I wouldn't be able to afford the quality coats, so leave the pricier coats for the Range Rover owners.
Funnily enough, I went to an agricultural suppliers and got a way better, waterproof, tough coat for half the price of the 'country' store Barbour, that I've still got today.

Oprah Winfrey shouldn't have to apologize for something that affects many afro-americans and people of color who travel internationally.

It’s really ignorant on many parts, to discriminate against your brethren. I’m far from being Oprah Winfrey, but I was the highest charge customer of this store. I went into the store, the day before, and I saw two pants outfit that I wanted, but I had to think about them. I went back in the next day. I was dress down real casual. The black sales clerk walked pass me, and spoke to the white women that were coming in behind me. The black clerk, went to the white women. and asked; did she need any help? The women told her no. Never said anything to me. Then she told that white women, if she needed any help, to let her know. In the meantime, I walked over to the two outfits, that I had saw the day before. I took them to the register. The cashier called me by my name, was everything alright? I told her yes. The rude sales clerk followed me to the register. She was standing there, as the cashier read off my total. It was over $500, dollars. The cashier asked; was it anyone that assisted me, and I pointed over to that sales clerk. I took my purchase, and was walking toward the door. The clerk followed me, came over to me, and told me thanks. I said to her. “Look you might know a few millionaires, but they didn’t come in here today. I said; you need to speak to everyone, offer your help to everyone, and treat everyone as if they are millionaires, and you won’t miss one, that you don’t know, when they come in. The sales clerk told me thanks for it all, and I left . I didn’t want that commission taken away from her. I wanted her to have it, and my wisdom. All thanks be to God, In His Son’s Jesus name sake, Amen👈❤️🙏

In my opinion, Oprah is right, this has been blown out of proportion. This is not about racism, is about the level of statue of person, basically are you rich or poor. This is what you called rich privilege and it happen everywhere in any countries. If you are black or brown or yellow but you look like crazy rich, they will treat you nicely, but if you are white but look like any common or poor people they will ignore or even ask you to leave. That's the irony living in the capitalist world. Where you will be judged on your appearance and accessories as the sign of a successful person. That's the reasons more people want to buy expensive stuffs just for social status, eventhough you don't need them or you can find cheaper and fulfill the the same purpose.
