Jane Austen has a quote about how you’re not supposed to like Emma it’s like part of the point, and after I read that it really made me love the story more and more over time and realize how funny it is. As a pride and prejudice girlie I love emma
"Emma" is one of my favorite Austen novels ... I usually like it more than "P&P": I love that flawed young woman, who, in the novel, possesses the most important quality of an Austen heroine: the capacity to learn. In the novel, she admits her wrongs often and early. She falls back a bit, and suffers envy of Jane Fairfax, but she is a very human character. She truly loves and cares for her father, and her family. She does mean to do the best for Harriet, and in the novel, Mr. Knightley admits that Emma has actually benefitted Harriet socially. Also, Highbury is truly brought to life in the novel - I really feel the reality of the community and the people in it.
Yh didn't Austen say that you're not meant to like Emma but that Emma is in fact Austen's favourite heroine? Pretty sure I remember that
@@jameshoyle8950 yup
@@jameshoyle8950 I think Fanny Price was her favorite, although favorite may not be exactly the word choice.
I remember reading the introduction about how she claimed ti have written a heroine no one but the author could love - and then Emma instantly becoming my favourite Austen heroine! (Though Catherine Morland is a close second.)
I like that you called Mr Knightly the Lizzy of the Emma world, because he absolutely is! Emma is the Darcy who's been getting away with being an asshole because of their social position and eventually comes to appreciate the one who calls them out on it.
24:05 I find this part so interesting cause Emma looks really shocked over what she just said and rightly so: she has always been mean with others but in a veiled, subtle way. Being close to Knightley doesn't make her much kinder, but at least she knows someone who matters to her will call her out on her bullsh#t. Then Frank comes and just amplifies her mean ways with his own. She drops her facade and doesn't like the version of herself she finds on the other side of that.
This comment 👌🏼
Jane Austen’s dad (along with her mom) was responsible for and encouraged her interest in reading and writing.
I’m another pride and prejudice girlie so I get it! But I loved this version of Emma and Anya ate this role up! The way Emma and Knightley looked at each other sometimes jfhdhfhwudh I can’t!
the swooning sneaks up on you!
Elles sont enceintes toutes les deux
This is late, but Emma was not old for the time.Despite what some bodice rippers and other historical romance may have you believe, 21 was a perfectly marriageable age.
29:27 They managed to get Emma's father to consent to the match and to let Mr Knightly move in with him rather than Emma moving into his house because of news that chicken thieves had been in the area. Mr Woodhouse felt more secure against them with Mr Knightly being there.
There’s a great outtake of Miss Bates flubbing her lines and letting a couple f-bombs fly 😂
omg 😂😂
i'm OBSESSED with this movie, Johnny is just **chef's kiss** king of longing eyes
14:24 Miss Bates always mentioned how amazing and brilliant Jane Fairfax is and that hurt Emma’s delicate ego.
I love this movie, I've seen it like 10 times. The costumes are beautiful, the performances are great, there are many funny moments. In the ball scene, the two of them dancing, but without the gloves, it makes my heart race❤❤
heheh such a good dance scene 🤭
It’s such a hot scene! I never thought that a Regency dance scene could be so sexy.
This is my favorite Jane Austen movie (I'm sorry P&P girlies 😅). I absolutely adore the costumes in this movie. I love the fact that they reused multiple articles of clothing to make it more realistic, like even though Emma is reach, she still repeats her clothes like every other person in the world.
this one is a good favorite too!
And bonnets !!
Yay! I love this movie. It's so over the top and comical and insane. Also love the chemistry and banter between Emma and Knightley, makes me giggle and kick my feet 😁
Couldn't agree more!
So happy we’re on the Jane Austen Adaptation Train because this movie is just such a visual delight.
the costumes are a slay
I would NOT be mad if you guys eventually do all, or almost all, Jane Austen adaptations. Just saying.. xD Almost no one does them (with the exception of Pride And Prejudice). I love all the stories but I have to say I'm a Emma and a Persuasion girlie.. :D
Seconded! All of the 1995 adaptations are exceptional! Persuasion and P&P and S&S are so clever and faithful and endearing ✨🌙✨
I also feel the Emma miniseries w Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller is amazing
And no one does the right P&P ☹
This movie is one of my favorites of all time, and my favorite Austen adaptation. It’s so funny, and the colors are so beautiful and THE ROMANCE. I swear at the beginning of this movie I thought Mr Knightley was meh, but at the end I was willing to die for him! I can’t believe I didn’t see your reaction to his saying, “If I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more” UGHSKALAJSKALSJS
I absolutely love Emma, specifically this version, it’s so pretty, so funny and I love the cast, especially Anya 😫 it’s also nice that I’m named after her especially bc I’m honestly just as annoying and bossy as her sometimes tihi
Also very funny bc Clueless another one of my favourite movies 👀
The picnic scene will never not be iconic. Also, it reminds me of those times where my foot was lodged in my mouth lol
the more I watch this movie the more it becomes one of my favourite period piece movies.
it gets better every time!
Emma is a classic for a reason! Timeless and surprisingly funny
love the subtle comedy of this movie!
"If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more." One of my favorite Austen lines. UGH, Knightley. Swoon, lol
My favourite part about this movie is Bill Nighy as Mr. Woodhouse. He sees draughts than a writer 😂
Emma is one of my favorite books & this was such a top tier adaptation. I do think the 2009 BBC adaptation is also really amazing, & Romola Garai makes her a bit more obviously likeable because she’s much more energetic. I don’t think she means to be mean. She’s just lived an isolated life in a small town. Mrs Bates, while very sweet, could be taxing at times if one remembers how small her circle was. I also think while she was rude about how she went about Harriet’s matchmaking, she did want the best for her friend & it was typical of the time to not only marry for love but also think about what would be best for the future. That, & she thought Elton better probably due to his being part of the church (which was much more respected… which clearly isn’t as obvious or assumed now). I love Emma because she’s flawed, but still willing eventually to change & grow. She’s relatable in the way that she sometimes makes poor decisions, but she ultimately tries to make up for them.
May sound ridiculous but Clueless is based off of Emma. Since I read the book I can say it does follow the plot pretty well.
I will admit I am a Emma fan since I found out it was the inspiration for Clueless, years ago, I do love P&P as much as the next, but Emma feels so subversive from Jane Austen's other characters.
(The 2020 adaptation made me love the story so much.)
The trailer of this movie deserves to be in the hall of fame.
Have you guys ever watched the Pride and Prejudice miniseries with Colin Firth? Cause it is so good❤
Fun fact: that series is what got him his role in Bridget Jones’ Diary
seen parts of it but never the whole thing. we know people love it tho!
@demontrash I really agree that you guys should watch it!
Highlight of the Video: “HE’S RUNNING AFTER HER CARRIAGE!”
omg we died. so good 🥰
Emma is both a bothered and unbothered Queen 😂
Frank Churchill's aunt adopted and raised him; that is why he has a different surname from his father, Mr. Weston.
Emma is for the annoying girlies that's why I love her and every iteration of Mr. Knightley is so good
I love the costumes in this one. Everything Emma wears. I want that wardrobe
25:18 me:*working on my BA thesis on Persuasion, almost cocking on my coffee*
*Sir Walter Elliot, Mr Tilney, Sir Thomas Betram and Mr Bennet stop eating
"It took awhile for Emma to grow on me." This sentence applies to Emma if you remove the last two words.
Check out Johnny Flynn’s music. My favourite pieces are The Detectorists theme music (btw great comedy show) and The Water (a duet with Laura Marling). He sings the Queen Bee song in the closing credits of the Emma movie too.
Miranda Hart who plays Miss Bates is a national treasure here in UK and we all love her. She has her own show - Miranda - and plays the wonderful Chumley in Call The Midwife.
I grew up with Clueless and knew it was based on Emma, though I had never read the book or seen any of the screen adaptations. I finally decided to give this version a go, and my god! I fell in love with it upon first watch. It is perfection...the casting, the pacing of the script, the cinematography and direction are all **chef's kiss** Anya and Johnny were wonderful as Emma and Knightley. I've always considered myself a Pride and Prejudice girly, but after watching this version of Emma, I'm leaning slightly more towards Emma.
“emma” contains the single most romantic line: “I cannot make speeches, Emma...If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am. You hear nothing but truth from me.” He knows her and he loves all of her.
13:47 Miss Bates is so chaotic but absolutely delightful haha #MotherYouMustSampleTheTart
The way I watched this movie 2 days ago and I was planning on requesting it for you guys to watch it... ugh perfect timing 😭❤ thank you for the reaction.
perfect timing!
I absolutely love this movie! It’s so fantastic.
oh my god FINALLY i've been looking for a good (or any at all) reaction to this movie for ages!
ALWAYS LOVE EMMA!!! gosh she is simply fabulous❤
I took the wrong lessons from ‘Emma’ when I was in school and had disastrous attempts at matchmaking.
you guys are so funny, and i love the way you edit your videos. there are so many more movies you could have fun with, sense and sensibility, four weddings and a funeral, about time. about a boy, or more dramatic stuff like atonement, english patient, sliding doors, shakespear in love. joe wright's anna karenina is really good to look at although it didn't get good reveiews, i liked it.
interesting how you cut this scene (7:47 Knightley going to Mr. Martin) and then the next scene (7:52 when Harriet visits Emma and tells her that Mr. Martin has written a letter. )
DO you think Mr. Knightley has helped him??? (bc in the end he implies that Mr. Martin is still interested in Harriet, so Mr. Knightley kinda has to talk to Mr Martin a lot (about Harriet too) that'd be cute!!
i woulñd have loved to see ya'll compare this to clueless
Yay! Finally!
I love Emma so much! I know she’s not everyone’s favorite but I really like her
We will always support this channel. They're incredible at what they do.
thank u!
I loved pride and prejudice (The film) when it came out and I was a preteen. I tried to read Emma, but had to put it down several times, bc the books was just really boring to me. (I read the German translation and the language is just really old) then years later Emma 2020 was realeased and I think I now like this film even more than pride and prejudice.
it's hard to tell which one one liked better, bc they're so different. I think pride and prejudice is for the hopeless romantics (in a way. mb bc of the trailer.)
Miranda Hart is my favourite version of Miss Bates. She’s a great comic actor.
Yes, I watch everything she is in.
Y’all should watch Jane Eyre! (2011 version with Mia Wasikowski)
Another excellent reaction! Not a period piece, but would love it if you watched Lockwood & Co! The main characters' chemistry is *amazing*.
I'm a big Anya fan so I had to watch this, and even read the book. I enjoyed it a lot.
these girls NEEEDDD to watch bridgerton
we have bestie ❤️
"[I]n love and in some doubt of its return" (more or less).
Miss bates is one proud auntie
I do prefer the Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Beckinsale versions, but this is fun too.
Robert Martin is already above Harriet's station.
11:38 perfect reaction lmao
I love this movie (and book!). Not sure if you were aware, but Clueless is based off of Emma. Cher = Emma 💖
My Favorite Version Of Emma ( Besides Clueless!)
😭😱🥰🖥
Anna Karenina 2012 next plssss
Can't reject snacks
This is my favorite movie
it's a good favorite!
1:09 I forget, have you seen the 1995 miniseries of 'Pride And Prejudice'? I'd love to hear you compare the miniseries and the 2005 movie
not in its entirety!
I recommend reacting to movie Nimona
When I first saw this, I thought Knightley and Emma looked too close in age, but they actually have the correct age gap - it's just that Hollywood has conditioned us to always expect women to be much younger than the men they're with!
❤
I just watched this yesterday. Note to self don't be like Emma
Please do love and friendship. A brilliant movie that feels more Oscar Wilde than Jane Austen. I think you'll love it
Engagement
✨you have received our favor✨
Hi I was wondering if you guys could watch the movie through my window and through my window across the sea
3:16 Single at 28 was considered odd at the time.
Gorgeous gorgeous girls play the piano and remember sheet music from memory.
Weird to think this is probably the only movie I've seen Mia goth in.
Wait a minute, is that actor who played Charles season 3 &4?
Yes
🙋🏾♀️ am I the only one that liked Emma? I feel like it accurately portrayed how privileged girls act. A lot of these girls that were born rich feel like they're doing the world a favor by wiping their own azz. At least Emma got a dose of conscience in the end
After Everything is coming to Prime soon. hope you know what that means...
😅😅😅😅🥳🥳🍸
oh god noooooo. Lol. 🍸may be the only way to get through that movie.
@@demontrash 🍸🫡
I think the thing with Emma is that there’s been a lot of people to praise her. Harriet is the perfect friend to Emma cuz she does nothing but praise her. “ I would like to see Emma in love “? Knightly, that’s freakin sexist af
Idk about this one, kinda just ripped off clueless :p
This is nice but frankly I like more the one1996 with Gwyneth Paltrow (and I don't even like that much Gwyneth Paltrow)
The "modern" version of Emma is supposed to be Clueless, is cute and funny.
'Promosm'
I love Emma but the 2009 BBC series ❣️
The costumes in this movie >>>>>>>>>>>> #EmpireStateOfWaist
Josh O’Connor is so cute ❤
Quote of the Day: “Why don’t y’all just get married already?”
Have you two seen the 2009 BBC version of ‘Emma’?
Mr knightly needs to shut it. He calls himself Emma’s friend but doesn’t trust her to make her own decisions
This scene is an example of what a tool knightly being a tool “I would like to see Emma in love” I’m like, you wanna see her emotionally subjugated. What kind of friend are you?!
I'm just not a fan of this adaptation of "Emma" at all. It's beautiful to look at, but I found the humor too exaggerated and some of the writing choices questionable.
Não gostei desse filme, o protagonista passa a impressão de que está sempre sujo
Knightly is such a tool. He mansplains all the time. Like, he calls Emma his friend but doesn’t seem to trust her to make her own decisions. Like in her choice of Harriet as her new bestie. He had something to say about that. He was like “ I’m not liking it, mrs Weston “
To give him some credit, he is older and it is quite natural for him to judge Emma's tendency to find herself a yes woman as a friend. And he does not judge her publicly, only shares his sentiment with their common friend. He later recognizes that Miss Smith is much better than he thought.
I actually think he’s one of the few people in Emma’s life willing (and of equal station) to tell her the truth. He’s known Emma for so many years that he sees her best qualities and her faults. She is only 21 after all and a know-it-all.
@@heidiooohs she’s very confident in herself and yes, it’s sometimes for the wrong reasons. Mr knightly knows her best of most of her friends but still, I can see how it would annoy her to always get told off cuz that’s like 1/4 of their interactions so you can tell knightly has been on her case for a long time
He was keeping her grounded. Obviously he knew a lot more about the world than she. She knew the world from her - very limited by the times she lived in - perspective, e.g. she had no idea how that priest what's his name was behaving when not around the ladies and Knightley did. He was actually the only one who had the guts to tell her the truth even the painful one because he cared about her so much. Not everything a man says to a woman has to be "mansplaining", you know. We can learn from each other since we have a different view of the world.
Mr. Knightley is wise but also he’s kind of irritating ngl which doesn’t help putting his point across lol
