what I love about this version is that even though in that period of time humans interactions are supposed to be so proper and controlled, we know that feelings when they’re intense are very difficult to control... I love that it feels so imperfectly human and not like property is above all.

Yes! And even then people knew rules of society/propriety were absurd. Jane Austen wrote satire so well it totally went over my head til I learned more about the era’s norms 😅

But to the extent that control indicates maturity and perhaps some moral high ground, I just want to point out that Lady Catherine loses. 😆 I wrote a paper in university close-reading her confrontation with Elizabeth, and I just remember that one of them uses a LOT more exclamation marks 👀

@@LiaaaaaaaaAAAAAHH Rules of society and propriety are not all that absurd, it's called having some kind of standards. Something that modern self sexualizing "empowered" middle aged careerist Feminist society doesn't have. Men are meant to ally protect the "empowering" excess sexual behavior of women and girls but not express any lust or desires as a male towards them because that is harassment. It's funny how women still go all weak in the knees for a leading man gender role romance but won't allow men enough sex confidence sense of their their own sexuality to be anything more then a boot licking ally partner, we don't/can't produce Mr Darcy's anymore because we would need a sense manhood style, culture, and role determine not by women but by men again for that. Jane Austin's Elizabeth who likes to read and marries a caring man of style and bearing doesn't really break the norms conservative society of that time so much, it is modern women with their masculine ideological boss babe super hero butt kick every man politics that does. Men can't be men because women won't let them be, because women are "wanna be" men now full of loud attitude all over the culture, there is nothing to love about or want from modern women. I with women were as kind and willing to be vulnerable to male stature and charm but women have to much attitude ie empowerment to be vulnerable to anything or anybody. It is all like pulling teeth just trying to converse with women now and it seems that is how modern female self loud mouth self confidence likes it. Elizabeth Bennet wasn't at total war with her society and time and didn't unlike modern Feminism destroy her mans sense of male sex identity and role in the relationship/the world, she was just a smart and more opinionated than most lady of her time who married a provider/loving man who loved and respected her for that spirit in more "equal" lovers partnership way. If we had a sense of male style and role back again then men would have enough freedom of male sex identity to be a Mr Darcy again, compared to today where men are to meant run from the shear volume of pro women/girl female super hero self esteem propaganda. There is nothing for men by men in the world anymore, everything allowed to men is decided by women now and ally males support this life of servitude to female rule.

You wondered how Lady Catherine heard a rumor that Lizzy was getting engaged to Darcy. In the book everything that Lizzy wrote to her married friend Charlotte would get told to husband Mr. Collins, who instantly passed everything on to Lady Catherine. Hearing of Jane's engagement to Bingley made the Collinses jump to the conclusion Lizzy and Darcy would be next. Collins even wrote to Lizzy's father, warning that Lady Catherine would not approve.

Yes, sort of. It was the Lucases, Charlotte's family, who would have passed on that rumor. Mr. Bennett even mentions it when he reads Mr. Collins's letter to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth might have shared the news but there would be no hint of a further connection with Mr. Darcy. Whereas the Lucases made the assumption that Jane's marriage to Bingley would lead to increased intimacy between Jane's favourite sister (Lizzy) and Bingley's best friend (Darcy) and maybe a marriage would follow. That is what Mr. Collins took to Lady Catherine. And that is also why Elizabeth was so startled by that assumption.

      @caggles 9 дней назад

@@eadc2158 For sure! There's so much to learn about that period in history in order to fully appreciate the book (and even the mini series, to some degree). It can sometimes be kind of difficult to understand some of the interactions from a modern audience's perspective, especially if you don't have that period knowledge to serve as context. And even if you do, a modern person just has a slightly different idea of what is and isn't romantic. So I really appreciate that this film did such an elegant job of updating the romance to be relatable to a modern audience without giving up any of the vibe of a period romance in the process. I think people really don't appreciate how incredibly difficult that would be, or how remarkable a job they did with that task. I love the book and I've learned a lot about the period specifically so I can appreciate it, but I still find this movie to be the most romantic version simply because it fits a little more with what I as a modern person find romantic.

I rewatch this movie pretty much twice a year, and I'm always stunned with how it doesnt feel dated at all for a 2005 movie. I think it's because Joe Wright took that extra precaution of making every frame feel like a painting, the photography is so beautifully woven into the time period that it feels as if we've traveled back in time to live the story with the characters.
Also seeing you giggling the whole movie through made me think that you would absolutely LOVE the Emma. version from 2020. It has that special type of humour and sarcasm but taken up a notch. Costumes and direction are delightful as well, I highly recommend it.

Joe wright is a pheonomenal director. His next film was Atonement, based on a brilliant novel, teaming up again with the same DP and score composer. The same style of filmmaking, but with such different intentions. Amazing. This (2005) version of P&P is cinemetic to its fullest. From the framing, to lighting, to blocking (like when Bingly pops up into the frame after the proposal), to that incredible one-shot of the party, to the excellent use of actors - all of whom are very well established, including all sisters. It’s a light film, done by people who know their stuff. Goes to show rom coms, or comedies can be shot and made with fashion and depth.

The inheritance laws were indeed brutal to women at the time. That's why I always stick up for Mrs. Bennet a bit. Her husband was on the downhill side of middle age. Certainly not unheard of for a man at that stage in life to pass away suddenly from an undiagnosed ailment, especially at the time. If that happened, it would be her and five daughters with no home, no money, no protection, and no legal way to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps". They could likely live on charity with distant relatives, that would be the best-case scenario. Her desperation to marry her daughters off and find them some security, the only security available to women at the time, makes total sense in that light. I really appreciated that you picked up on that and didn't judge the mom too harshly. I also really appreciated how you understood Charlott's point of view about married life and didn't judge her in light of all that.

    • @Me-wk3ix
      @Me-wk3ix 8 месяцев назад +2

It also makes some of Elizabeth's loathing of Mr. Darcy understandable. Her sister, who she considers an angel on earth, had a chance at security for herself, and the family, and to actually be in love and be happy. From her view, Darcy took all of that away, just because he didn't find Jane to be demonstrative enough in nature.

Touring famous, grand estates was very typical for the time. Their homes were often already historical buildings -- passed down from great Lords (so like a mini castle), Abbys (buildings where Nuns reside), and former grand churches. They would have been renovated and built upon over the centuries, based on the owner's wealth. Touring these estates would've been like looking at historic homes or castles like we do these days -- yes a family or bachelor like Darcy might live there, but the housekeeper wouldn't show the private quarters, there was plenty to see otherwise.

Last year I went on a vacation to England and on my own private “Pride and Prejudice tour in the Peak District (Derbyshire). I am in the frustrating position of feeling the need to defend Mr. Collins. His intentions were generous. If he'd married one of the Bennet sisters, he could've saved all of them from financial ruin after Mr. Bennet's death. I don't like him, and Lizzie was absolutely right to turn him down, but I feel like he gets more hate than he deserves. In a different story, he'd be the hero.

Oh! So excited to have you react to this movie!! It is literally my favorite movie and novel, as is clear if you take a close look at my photo or Google my name. Based on my expertise, allow me to give a few kudos, some trivia, and answer a few questions.
First, Matthew’s last name is pronounced Mac-FAD (like mad) Yen (the Y is emphasized)
Good on you for understanding and being sympathetic to Mrs. Bennet. Yes, she is ridiculous, annoying, and probably not mother of the year material, but she does love her daughters and knows that her main purpose is to see them safely and successfully married.
The timeline isn’t detailed in the movie, but the initial dance at Meryton took place a handful of months after the tragedy with Mr. Wickham and 15 year old Georgiana Darcy. So Darcy is still very upset and not in a festive mood.
The events take place at the same time the war with Napoleon was on, hence the disdain over decorating “in the French style”. At this time, anything from France was essentially forbidden.
It isn’t that teasing or laughing were wrong, exactly, but composure and manners were signs of gentility. To act foolish or be even slightly rude was bad form!
The hand touch is significant because it was generally considered too forward, or even crossing a huge line, for an unmarried man and woman to touch skin-to-skin. That is why wearing gloves while dancing, for instance, was standard. Darcy reveals to the viewer, and to himself and Elizabeth, his involuntary need to touch her. Lizzy is baffled but Darcy is clearly very affected. Too much, in his mind, which is partially why he (with the help of Caroline) encourage Bingley to leave Netherfield.
All of the houses filmed are in England, of course. Pemberley is Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, one of the many estates owned by the Duke of Devonshire who heads the aristocratic Cavendish family. It is believed that Jane Austen based her description of Pemberley from a recent visit to Chatsworth. Touring the public rooms of the great houses has been a common practices for centuries, and still is to this day.
You are correct that Jane should have made her sentiments clearer, as Charlotte said, although this was difficult to accomplish at this time when women were not supposed to be too forward. Rules of behavior between the sexes were very strict. The significance of Charlotte noting Jane’s reticence, is that when Darcy says the same thing during the rain proposal, Lizzy can’t honestly refute. Instead she changes the subject to Wickham.
Small trivia: Colonel Fitzwilliam is Mr. Darcy’s first cousin. Fitzwilliam is a family name, including Lady Catherine’s surname before her marriage, and the first name of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. This is seen briefly on the letter.
Lydia taking off with Mr. Wickham, which was a sexual relationship outside of marriage, would ruin the entire family. None of the girls would ever be able to secure a gentleman of substance and there would be a stain on the family name in Society. Darcy tracking down Wickham, forcing them to marry, and paying a substantial amount of money to secure Wickham a military post was not just a kind gesture. In fact, he was putting his own reputation at some risk to even be involved in such a matter. He truly did not want Lizzy to know. He felt incredible guilt believing it was partially his fault for not exposing Wickham to save his sister’s reputation, and wanted to secure the honor and reputation for the Bennet family, particularly the daughters.
Men could and did play musical instruments. It simply wasn’t considered a necessary aspect of their education. Fine ladies were expected to be at least somewhat educated on the arts and able to entertain guests, as well as be proficient at needle craft and so on.
Lady Catherine heard of Darcy’s affection from Mr. Collins, who gleaned it from his wife Charlotte who was much more perceptive as to what was happening between Darcy and Lizzy.
This movie was a start for several great actors. Even Kiera Knightley was relatively unknown when this was filmed. Joe Wright is a brilliant director definitely worth looking into. Atonement and Anna Karenina are top pics, both starring Knightley. All of the actors were British with the exception of Donald Sutherland and Jena Malone (yes, she was in Hunger Games movies). If you didn’t notice, Kitty Bennet was played by Carey Mulligan, who has won and been nominated for dozens of major awards including two Oscars.
I could go on but this is long enough already! LOL! Thanks for making my day with this reaction, Nick, and I am so glad you enjoyed this excellent adaptation of a wonderful classic novel.

Visiting peoples homes was a lot more like social media back in the day. You would stay for 15 minutes to make small talk or if they werent available, you would leave a calling card. The person that was visited would then return one within a week to show respect to the visit.
People travelling through an area might visit a few places just to put out feelers for new friends and the reason her aunt and uncle are so shocked about Mr Darcy talking to them is because their status was low enough they didnt expect a reply. They were just there to snoop around the house.

I loved your reaction to this. It's my favourite movie adaptation of Austen's classic novel. The scenes in and around Pemberley (Mr Darcy's home) are shot on location in the Peak District and Chatsworth House. The Peak District is one of our national parks here in the UK, and it's mostly in the county of Derbyshire (with a little bit in each of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, and West and South Yorkshires). It's separated into two "peaks", Dark and Light, depending on the main rock-beds and landscape. I live in the Dark Peak. 😁 Chatsworth House is a stately home also in Derbyshire and it's beautiful, both inside and out, and its seasonal markets and events are always worth a visit.

This version of Mr. Collins is terrifying to me. Because he plays the character straight, you can see how her mother and society could possibly see him as a good match for her and put real pressure on her to accept him.
Also, you should check out more of Austen's work. There's "Persuasion" (not my cup of tea, but some people like it), "Emma", "Northanger Abbey", and "Sense and Sensibility". I absolutely love the last three.

Yes, visiting an estate was common, still is actually. You don't visit the entire house, typically there are public areas like a ballroom, a picture gallery or art room, etc. The private rooms like a sitting room, or music room are not open to see. Same with the gardens, usually there are public parts of the garden, and private areas, as well as the surrounding "park" which is usually cultivated woodland, countryside, ponds etc. These days you pay to enter usually, then possibly too. It was part of a housekeeper's job to show visitors the house, so if the owner/family is at home is largely irrelevant, they don't need to do anything, and they don't even need to know there are visitors. If you come to visit the people you will ask for a servant to announce you, or ask if someone is at home, and you would leave your card if they aren't at home, or aren't receiving visitors.
The Bennets are gentry. Mr Bennet is a gentleman, but he's not a nobleman. On the surface Mr Darcy is also a gentleman, and on the same level, but Mr Darcy has family that is noble, he's much richer than the Bennets, and I don't remember if he is actually someone who would be presented at court, but it's possible that he is. So he's definitely a higher rank socially, even if it's not overt. It's also signaled by his good taste, his knowledge, and the way he raises his sister that he is what would probably be called "genteel". His good taste in his house, garden, art, etc, and treatment of his servants and tenants is what wins over Elisabeth. His letter is what makes her consider his actions in a new light, but how his character is shown through the way people who know him speak about him makes her actually fall for him.
Part of being a well educated and accomplished woman was being able to play the piano, or the harp. I don't think other instruments are very common, or even allowed. Being a musician as a job was not a thing for most women, it would be considered crass and anything in the theatre was associated with prostitution. A lady would be expected to be able to entertain guests, and family. So she should be able to plan meals, direct the servants (or have a good housekeeper and/or butler so they can do it for her), be able to converse on a variety of subjects, be able to play a few card games, be able to embroider or paint to display artwork and decorations, and play music and/or sing for entertainment. There wasn't any other option for music but what people could make themselves, so if you would want to dance with a small group of friends, someone will have to play the music (which means everyone should play so you can rotate, or you make someone play for you) or if you wanted to listen to some music while you read, you are limited to what your family members can do.
From what I've read it was very uncommon for men to play the piano, and somewhat uncommon for men to play an instrument. If they played an instrument they were more likely to play a string instrument or a flute.
