I'm not a blacksmith, but I do weld and use oxy/acetylene and grinding so sparks are a common occurance around here and for my protection I wear a leather jacket (winter) or fire resistant canvas jacket ( summer) for my upper body and a long, split leg half apron for the lower end. Almost chap like as they can be tied around each leg.
Of course, eye and ear protection as needed and gloves boots and a welding beanie.
That custom apron sure is nice! It totally ads another dimension to one's "stage presence" when doing demos when you dress the part.
Being a working musician for decades has taught me that the majority of an audience at a show or demo are more impressed by the trappings than the actual work taking place. Les Paul said it best, "people hear with their eyes."
    Peace

I forgot to ad I currently use the HF verson very uncomfortable around the neck when I were it I have to use a shirt with a collar to put that strap in. I often wounder if the pockets at the bottom are a safety hazard> I mean cant they catch a hot plug or a hot cut piece. You guys on here that were these got me thinking ,in fact I think I will be cutting the pocket loose from the top giving more length and slit the middle for holding stock and for maneuverability .. Thank Roy .. God Bless You and yours from me and mine. Martin M&S Blades.

Thanks so much for the vid! I was just thinking today as I finally was finishing my coal shop fore, about if I should wear my welders apron or not. So you really showed me the pros and cons, thanks.

I also use a full body, split leg apron (bought used on Craig's List for $10). It came with a neck strap which I removed and added an old pair of suspenders to move the weight off my neck and onto my shoulders. In function, very much like your custom apron. A bit of a challenge to get into but, once settled, it is very comfortable.

I use the full body apron. I don't want to ruin my clothes, especially the t shirts I bought from you guys. Keep up the great work Roy and Jess. God bless!!!

I use the lap apron it was sold as a ferrier apron so it has a couple unnecessary magnets and things on them but I love it.

I have been watching you and several other blacksmiths that hold tongs or rods between your legs. My body must be proportioned wrong because when I try it the stock rests on the edge of the anvil with the end I am working on sticking up in the air. I would have to lower my anvil three or four inches to hold my stock that way. My back would give out on me if I went any lower. My apron came from Duluth Outfitters and is similar to your Harbor Freight apron.

Since the pockets are just the bottom of the apron folded up and attached with brad at the top - I plan to release the top of the pockets of the cheap apron to hang down for leg protection. then cut a slit up higher to allow holding the work between my legs. This should give max coverage and flexibility of use. For me, this is better solution than having pockets but YMMV.

I have a nice apron from forgeaprons.com however I still use my Hobart welding apron. I added a strap to it so that the neck band does not ride on the back of my neck which adds to the comfort of wearing it for a few hours.

bc65925 I was going to mention them too. Their aprons have the same type of straps that cross on the back, and they run $170. They also have lap aprons for $70 (but only down to the knee).
I am not affiliated with them; I don't even own one of their aprons, but they are probably the ones I'll buy if I ever seriously get into smithing.

Hey Chris! beautiful apron. Do you know how thick the leather is on your custom apron? I am planning to make my own apron but I am struggling with the thickness of the leather.

Would it split further up if I took one of the harbor freight aprons and split up far enough to get tongs between my legs to hold them

great video In my opinion a leather Apron of any kind is a very important piece of PPE especially when forge welding (Splat says the flux) ...... Martin M&S Blades

You didn't have anyone specific in mind when you said no sandals did you? Lol. You don't like the burn scars on my feet? My mother in law wanted to get me a nice custom apron like that. She was worried about me getting burned... Until she found it how much it cost! Then she didn't seem to care as much! Lol. Define Your Legacy!
