Making A Better Leather Apron !

  • Ive been wanting to make a new apron for some time now. My old apron worked fine but it left a lot to be desired. I wanted a place for my lapel mic for when Im creating videos, and I also wanted a place for my tape measure to go on and off easily. A sheath to hold a small hand plane for when I'm doing wood working, and a place to hold a small square. I also wanted a towel ring for when I'm doing glue ups so I have a place to wipe the glue off my finger. It would also be cool to have a magnetic strip to hold all those little tools that I keep setting down and forgetting where I put them every five seconds. So, having just bought a sewing machine that can handle the job, I set out to make my perfect apron! Thanks for watching my DIY apron , and don't forget to subscribe. Shaloha!

    OLD Leather Smith here, I believe it is a GREAT Video, terrific 4 a beginner, you also have some excellent ideas, I have a few suggestions, NEVER STRIKE A METAL PUNCH WITH A METAL HAMMER USE A PLASTIC FACE HAMMER THAT WAY OVER YEARS OF USE YOU DON'T MUSHROOM THE HEADS OF YOUR TOOLS, I don't skive my joints if necessary 4 rivet length I make leather washers this gives joints more strength personal preference that really works over time. Skip music hearing the work works better 4 the beginners and ME! GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

    Hi; servo motor for the Juki guy here... I think we may have been separated at birth (well, except for the fact that I'm probably 25 years older than you, but let's not quibble...).
    Awesome job for a first project! I've got one underway myself, with many of the same ideas, motivations, etc. Here are the very few that I have that I didn't see in yours FWIW; might be a retrofit over time?
    • Velcro closure sewn into the bottoms of the big pockets; allows you to empty sawdust from them.
    • Flaps over same pockets; see 'sawdust' above.
    • Cannibalize a set of shoulder straps from a backpack, and incorporate them into the straps for a more comfy fit.
    • Not sure if you have one (but given that we also own the same Wilton vise, there's at least a 50% chance...), but you can use a vacuum bag to do the wet leather forming much more effectively than the thumbtack method.
    So, in case you are wondering, our next big project is to build a woodworker's toolbox that looks like the Snap-On box we already have for mechanics tools, but is made of wood, sized for woodworking tools, complete with tool foam cut to shape, and then wrapped in vinyl so as to appear painted at automotive quality. Please get started on that ASAP, I'm eager to see how mine will turn out and what problems I might encounter so that I can avoid them. Thanks! 😂

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  3 года назад

      Dang! I should have bounced some ideas off of you before I started this apron😜. I like the idea of an opening to eject all the wood shavings out of the bottom pockets! ...A faux metal Snapon toolbox for wood tools.... oh yes ... good idea. I’ll definitely get started on that for you ASAP. That is, after I complete the scrolling list of projects I have on my workbench 😜

    Great job brother. There's a lot of great design ideas in this project. Would have liked to have known what weight and type of leather you were using though? Chrome/Died Veg Tan ect....
    I love the idea of magnet strips I think I'm going to steal that. Adam Savage from MythBusters made one as well and he did a split leg apron. Seems like a cool feature to add or tryout. Keep up the good work!

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Max.. I bought a full half cowhide died veg tan leather. I can’t remember weight but I do wish I had gone a little lighter.. The magnet strip has been very handy but there is a down side when metal working in that it picks up a lot of metal shavings. Not a big deal but still annoying ;) I would do it again if I made another one 🤙

    I didn't hear you mention what leather you used? 3/4 ounce maybe?

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  4 месяца назад

      Thanks Phillip, that’s because I lost the paperwork from the company I bought the leather from. I can’t remember thickness but I do know if I were to do it over again I would probably go a tad thinner for more flexibility. If I remember right, I bought a half Hyde that was oiled vegtan. Sorry, hope that helps. 🤙

      Honestly it’s been so long since I’ve made this I don’t remember.. but I can tell you I do wish I had gone a little thinner on the leather as it is a bit heavy. I’ll see if I can find the vendor I used and send it you way. Thanks

    what leather is he using? or whats the most durable one to use? even if it wont be so confortable because of the thickness i just want it the most durable possible

    • @ShalohaCreations
      @ShalohaCreations  Год назад

      This is a full half hide oil tanned leather.. I think if I remember right it’s 4-4.5 oz. Little thick for an apron, but definitely durable.
