  • In this week's Sound for Video Session, we'll walk through the basic setup of the Sound Devices 888, how to configure inputs and a tour through some of the menus. We'll then answer your sound related questions.
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnlightandsound.com including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. We have a course on sound for live-streaming with the ATEM Mini and just added Introduction to Izotope RX for Dialogue Audio.

Curtis Judd you are a blessing to me. I couldn't afford to enrol for a sound course, I've just been learned a lot from you. Thank you very much for being so kind and caring 😊 I hope soon you'll teach us how to send channels to the director, producer, client on set, setting a private line between yourself, boom operator and sound utility.

Thanks for another great video, Curtis! I just got the 833 and are having trouble getting sound from usb input in the headphones. Any videos or articles on how to use it as an USB interface?

Thanks for the answer Curtis. The dialogue recording I have is from a spoken word/music performance livestream. Mic one goes into an analogue mixing board, and the mixer main L & R outs go into the Panasonic GH4/YAGH audio unit. I’m not sure how much of a stereo image makes it to the zoom meeting, and I’ve always wondered if I need both L and R outputs of the mixer to go to the camera, especially in regards to dialogue. However, it’s a cheap yet robust setup that’s working well. Thanks again Curtis

For spoken word, I'd stick with mono. Thanks for the question, Andrew!

Thank you for the video. You made it exactly in the right moment for me. My 888 and SL-2 will arrive tomorrow, hopefully. 😊 I also use IKEA Ladda batteries and tried rechargeable lithium, but had problems with that because I was not able to see when they die. I tried with my wisy and G4 transmitters and suddenly without warning they stop working. Have you had the same experience? What brand of lithium batteries are you using? Thanks!

I just bought a set of Lankoo AA Li-Ion rechargeables. Yes, every battery chemistry works a little differently. Ideally, the device needs to be configured to know which chemistry it is working with. Not all devices support that.

Hi curtis, I know you touch on it towards the start of this video but where do you recommend your LR mix hitting on the meters for a live broadcast mix of speech (3 or 4 stick mics)? Average around -18dBFS peaking at -10 or peaking at -18dBFS?

I'm interested in sound for film and tv. Is the 833 enough for most productions or should I be looking into the 888?
    Thanks in advance!

That depends on the types of productions you plan to work. The 888 is much bigger and heavier - I usually have it on a cart. It would be quite a lot to carry in a bag all day. Also, it depends on how many inputs and outputs you need.

    Hi Curtis,
Hope you are well. Hope you are enjoying your 888. I have been reading the manual for the 833. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to explain what “Bus Sends on Faders” means. I have not heard anyone on RUclips explain it.
    Thanks
    Mathew

Hi Matthew, that's for sending audio to another bus and controlling the level at which it is sent, if I understand it correctly.

@@curtisjudd why would I need to send audio from 1 bus to another bus?

    Hi Curtis,
How are you? I think I know what my Ultimate Audio Setup is!
I want a Sound Devices 888 with the A-20-Nexus attached to it. I want (6) A-20-Tx Transmitters with Sanken COS-11D Omni Lavalier Microphones and acessories. I would also have a Mixpre-10 II in a bag for Bag-Drops or Hooking it up to Church or DJ sound mixing boards.
Do you still have your Learning Light and Sound website? I would love to buy a course from you on the Sound Devices 888 mixer/recorder. I would also buy a course from you for the A-20-Nexus.
Let me know if you make either of those; otherwise, have fun and take care!
    Mathew A Coulliette

Hi Matthew, sounds like a really nice kit! I do not have any courses on the Sound Devices 8xx series or the Nexus, unfortunately. Have fun and make some great sound!
