Insane that prices have gone through the roof in 2 years. The 833 has gone up by $1400 while 888 & Scorpio have gone up by $2000+. In 2 years.

The chart is not quite correct. 888 has 12 recordable analog inputs (8 bal mic/line + 4 unbalanced via the two stereo returns)

    888 costs $9200 at this time. 😬

Can the custom function star-buttons be set to increment the slate number?

Not as far as we know. The star button functions seem to be limited to Shortcut with PFL switch to access channels 9 through 16, soft buttons for menus, and mappable functions via the Toggle Switch Action menu, which alas, "Increment Slate Number" is not included.

32 bit float not in 8 Series? interesting

Because it isn't needed! Would see very little usage in this niche.
Although I suspect Sound Devices has it on their "to do list" to support in a future firmware update, but likely is very very low down their priority list. (and rightly so, there are MANY other things I'd like to see come out in a firmware update first before than 32bit!)

      It does have 32 bit
