I think the biggest mind shift for me was hearing the quote that says something close to “being a minimalist doesn’t mean your house is never messy. It means it’s easily picked up.” Huge difference because people and pets = mess.

When my kids were young, I'd rotate some toys instead of having everything out all the time to prevent boredom. And if done with them I took things to kids resale shops or donated. My motto was, "If we aren't using it, it's gone". We simply did not have the space to store unused items. Kid's resale shops are great because kids change so much in size, interests and growth phases so quickly. You can sell your used items and purchase new (to your child) items for a fraction of the usual cost. Win-win.

First, energetic music helps me get things done! The thing about decluttering and minimizing is it decreases the feeling of being overwhelmed with so much stuff and not enough space for it all and then drowning in all of it (and the thought that you need a bigger house or an addition- true story, a friend moved because of all their stuff and it didn’t help, it just allowed more accumulation of stuff). Once you have decluttered and/or minimized and everything has a place it is easier to keep clean and maintain what you do have and the spaces. Early in our marriage as a SAHM, I kept a mental daily task list- Monday was cleaning the bedrooms- not changing sheets or laundry, just wipe things down, rearrange drawers and closets the kids did a search and destroy with and a quick vacuum. Tuesday was a deep clean of bathrooms. Wednesday was dusting and vacuuming. Thursday was deep cleaning of the kitchen and fridge. Friday was changing sheets on beds and washing/drying/folding/put away the sheets and towels and bath mats/kitchen runners and putting out clean towels and rugs in the bathrooms and kitchen. Saturday was menu planning, grocery shopping and prepping for next weeks meals. Sundays were and are a day of rest outside of meals and dishes. Everyday was at least one load of laundry and picking items up as we all went through a room, making sure the kitchen was a clean as you go during the day and a reset each night; kids helped pick up before dinner, then daddy bathing them as I cleaned up after dinner and reset the kitchen and then cuddles and boom reading with the kids. As they got older daily maintenance went quicker because they helped me with the cleaning and laundry and cooking. And every day, because of basic maintenance/cleaning, I spent play time or reading or playing with my children- with joy because I knew I did t have an overwhelming and messy house to deal with. Whether one is a maximalist or a minimalist or in-between, simple daily tasks stops that pile up of so much to do- even when I left the home to work full time, all of us were in the habit by that time of quick tasks and cleaning as we went, and that helped when the kids had activities and school- we allowed one extracurricular per child per semester because running 4 kids all over the place was not just exhausting for we, the parents, but it also stressed the kids where they had to make sure homework was done, their chores were done, animals walked and cared for (if they asked for a pet, they had the responsibility for it and we had several dogs, cats and rodents in cages), along with meals and showers, etc- so we made sure they did t have too many activities so they could have down time at home and get to bed at a decent hour. All you young mothers, keep a daily to do list written down, don’t try to do everything on one day, space it out, but just do basic pick up and clean those spills quickly, keep your kitchen clean daily and life goes on.

Having kids, esp little kids, and pets means almost constant cleanup. Add in a husband sometimes means more messes too, usually. Just think how much harder it would be with a cluttered house. I'm having constant fights with the person I live with over not getting rid of clutter, not cleaning up, and leaving everything laying around. So frustrating. Your house looks so good even with a little chaos versus what I deal with. You have done so much amazing work with your house and possessions that your kids will hopefully retain the clean and uncluttered lifestyle all their lives. You are an inspiration to so many people.

So sorry your going through this! It's almost impossible to teach kids they don't need everything if all their friends have everything! Just keep on talking to them. Teach with your own possessions! They may see itvand want it too. Hopefully your husband will come around? Try to explain you want to raise the kids differently and not so materialistic. It doesn't have to be extreme just clean and neat and not so embarrassing. Good luck❤😊

@dsmith4136 I know it's hard especially at that age! I grew up like that so I swore I would not be like that. But, it may be all he knows. Lead by example. It will be like training a child all over again. So nice of you to help him. If he moves to a retirement place, there will be no argument. They will come in and just clean it up so try to him perhaps. perhaps. If you can. Good luck
