    Thanks Ken great reveal. I have to admit that screen tilting mechanism looks like the Achille's Heal of the camera. Its supporting circuitry and backlights have to stop at the edges of the moving assembly, instead of there LCD being able to fill a larger area on back of the camera where the seams used to be and its circuitry can expand into the regions around the screen since it's not moving. I've had my Z9 since the end of August. It does Focus Much Much Better than the POS D850, I had. I do notice more Artifacts in the Images than in the D850, and slightly less Dynamic Range. Colours are a bit more Accurate, but I'm sure Future FW updates will reduce that. I do have a couple of Hot Pixels that show up on any exposure longer than 1 sec, regardless of ISO. The IBSS works quite well, especially when the Lens has VR. I trialed a 24-200mm an was able to shoot at 200mm at 1/2sec, and there was no shake. I do worry about the Weakness in the Lens Mount Attachment, only 4 very short screws hold it on, and they tend to bust up the Body when they do let go. I suspect that was deliberate on Nikon's part, so they can offer a Z9II with an 'Improved" Mount.
    The many FW updates, point to a Camera that was rushed to Release. I suspect the Reason was, Nikon was worried that Canon and Sony would have a Better Option on the Market, if they delayed the release till when the Camera was Truly finalized.

    I’ll be upgrading from a D7500 DSLR. When I first got the D7500, I watched a video in which said to never charge the battery by plugging the cable into the camera. Always use a charger.. and so I have done.
    If you simply plug in to the camera.. and something goes wrong, it might damage the camera. Plus there’s an always the possibility of someone walking into / tripping over the cable… and knocking the camera onto the floor etc.
    Using an external charger is so much safer just in case, especially with the (very expensive) Z9 being supplied with a charger (my D7500 wasn’t supplied with one)

    What's to stop someone from buying something from Amazon, B&H, Adorma, using it and returning it? I have returned Lenses to Amazon when they were poor performers. Any time I am buying a camera at a store, I take it out of the box in the store, insert a memory card, take Pic of the salesperson. I then check the shutter count in the image data file. If more than 2, I ask for another body.

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 года назад

      Nothing stops people; there' s a 30-day 100% cash-back return policy at those places - 60 days at Crutchfield. Once you or anyone has opened the box, it's used. When you return cameras to good stores like Adorama or B&H, it goes into their used department and they take the loss in the name of good customer service, unless it's genuinely defective in which case it goes back to meet its maker. Do this at a local retail store and it probably goes back to sell to the next poor guy who gets charged the new price, a rip-off. Heck, worst buy usually charges a restocking fee and then sells it as new to the next guy! I don't know how Amazon handles returns; I haven't seen their warehouses and met their people in person but I have heard they often crush returned products to be sure this doesn't happen. If people buy with the intent of getting a free rental that's called return fraud - never do that. Thanks!

    • @alin.danila
      @alin.danila Год назад

      No they won’t , if they would do that they would be out of business pretty quick.
      Their used department are for trade-ins of actually used gear.
      I received “open-box” items from B&H that was sold as “new”.
      Last items just few days ago … some Prograde cfexpress type b cards.
      Some of them arrived in the original plastic pouch other just in the paper packaging without the plastic pouch (clearly opened before right ?)
      So, your returned Z9 will most likely be sold as new to another customer.
      The market either have to accept this reality or the store has to stop the loose return policy and enforce big restocking fees so they can cover the loss of value by selling a brand new item as “open box” .

    Call me anything but Ken I have to agree with you every time you disapprove camera makers offshoring their labor, and you're the only reviewer who consistently disclose where gears are assembled. Sure components are sourced the world over but when companies like Canon sticks mostly to domestic production-whether out of better financial resources-that "Made in Japan" tag is also a statement that it values quality and heritage. It really isn't so much about whether that truly means better quality, because it can always be improved with better practices anywhere. It's an ideal.
    I was pleasantly surprised when Nikon released the Z7/6, which unlike the D850 was first made in Japan, so the thought came to me that it was done in order for the fabrication process to mature before they shift to Thailand. Of course the unfortunate occurred, making my Z7 all the more valuable as one of the final batches of domestic Nikon cameras. I can go as far to say that, voting in what I believe in, all cameras and lenses I own are domestically built-and so the 24-70 2.8, one of the three Japanese Z lenses, is the only one I currently have for the system.

    But in my opinion the on/off switch of nikon is the best on the market. I shoot wildlife and when i walk around with the heavy lens in the left hand and the body in the right, i can turn the camera on and start shooting immediately, when there is an animal showing up. I really don't know how i would be able to turn on a Canon Camera with the switch on the left, in this situation. 😅🙈

    Love this review. My only complaint is I assume you will use this in your review and now in your comments you talk about returning it, thus doing the very same thing you complain about in the video when someone buys a camera locally. So some guy will pay thousands to BH Photo for something you’ve likely used and or dropped. Am I wrong?

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 года назад

      Returns to B&H are only resold as used gear; B&H takes the hit - not the next poor soul if bought at a local store. B&H has a huge used department. NEVER buy from any store that has no used department, because they often resell their returns to you and I at full price as new! No kidding, I know someone who returned a brand-new Nikon 200mm f/2 (c. $10,000) to B&H that he used but once and didn't love, and that lens was resold as used at a huge discount to someone else who wrote me about it - serial numbers don't lie. B&H is extremely on the up-and-up; it's always been about we the customers. PS; this is not a review at all; it's just me opening the box, The review is developing (ha ha) at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/z9.htm PS - don't abuse the liberal return policy or you could get blacklisted. With this Z9 I had no idea it was from Thailand before I bought it. No one puts that as they should in the online listings. That's why I call it out in my reviews. On the other hand, now that I'v been shooting out, it really does run at 120FPS with full tracking autofocus and autoexposure for each shot, so I'm digging it. Thanks!

    Okay, the complaints starting at 9:46 are mind-boggling to me:
    You *prefer* a mode dial? Who even uses a mode dial? I don't even like or use those things on starter cameras, except to turn it to M and leave it forever if possible. I've always figured they were only there to make consumers think they're getting more than they are and to mislead beginners into thinking they know what they're doing. I mean maaaybe the priority modes are useful once in a rare while, but you can switch them real quick in the "i" menu, whereas being able to see your settings, shot count, battery life, and stuff at a glance all the time is super useful.
    I've used at least six Nikon cameras with that type of power switch - three of them frequently and in widely varied, often fast-paced situations for multiple years - and I've never even considered that switch design being an issue; I'd find it way more frustrating to have to fidget with that locking button or use both hands to turn the camera on and off.
    I mean no offense, even if it comes off like I do, but I've just never thought of personally or heard anyone else express anything but the opposite of those two opinions before, and I honestly went back to double-check I'd heard you correctly both times.

    I have had memory card doors open unintentionally when getting camera out of camera bag (small waist pack of small shoulder bag) and also sometimes when using with gloves while shooting. As far as quality of the dials and switches, it seems to me older cameras had better mechanical quality and more pleasant to use dials. For example the newer dials and switches maybe due to them being rubbery are not as smooth to use and sticky. an old d50 or d70 dials and power on switches seem better than those on newer cameras.

    The biggest problem with the Z9 that I've found (I'm a sports photographer) are the timeouts and there doesn't appear to be a work around. First, when the camera times out everything shuts down and it takes something in the order of 2 seconds to come alive again. There are 4 times outs and if you hit any of them it shuts the camera down. The Power timeout can be set to "never" but that's not usually the problem. The worst of these is the image review timeout. Here's what happens; you take a series of pictures at a sports event and then you chimp to see if you got something usable. You look at the images then put the camera down until the next play happens - you're watching the action and then you see the shot coming, you pull up the camera and - NOTHING. It has shut down (sleep) and after the 2 seconds it takes to wake up - the shot is gone. I've missed quite a few shots because of this and it's sometimes hard to figure out which timeout actually shut the camera down. This camera has a really strong battery and I've used it for long sport events. Nikon needs to give us a setting that won't let the camera go to sleep (shutdown) - unless you turn it off!

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 года назад

      Hmm, I'll check that out. By habit I tap my shutter button everytime I draw my camera before it's at my eye to get the drop on it waking up. The biggest problem I've had with my Z9 is crappy AF: far too often it just hunts in and out like it was 1987. Ever see this? Seems to happen with most lenses and in various modes. Yikes! Thanks!

    • @Bob4golf1

      @@KenRockwellTV Maybe I just need to develop the habit of tapping the shutter or AF button to keep the camera awake. Nikon has slowly been going out of business for quite a few years and pushes as hard as they can to get people to please buy their stuff.

      Been sad watching a former leader slide so far down, and they’re not likely to come back. Life changes, new leaders emerge and life goes on. Pick up a glory days Nikon like an F3 and manual focus lenses and it’s like night and day.

      @@KenRockwellTV breaks my heart ❤️
      My dad shot Nikon with only 2 lenses (50mm and 100mm) he was able to get into magazines and publications in a time when no one else was hiring a black photographer. he would shoot without any credit but he loved it and was able to make a living for himself in london. But when I started photography with my rebel and a kit lens, I was always was wondering how Nikon would be so When I was gifted a d700 when my friend upgraded it was my primary portrait camera
      So disappointed when the cf card started failing and even more confused why this z9 isn’t like it was back in the glory days
      but it’s okay I still have the glass from years ago and since it works with the F3 I might be in the market for that, but if there was a digital Nikon do you recommend anything or just stick to canon for digital images?
      Thanks for your honesty and dedication to your reviews been missing your thoughts on the new gear! ❤️🥺

    Interesting that Nikon, who should be paying attention to costs, included a USB A to C cord, and then hard-wired a duplicate cord into their AC charger. Total waste and duplication!

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 года назад

      Exactly! Those cords are pennies a piece at wholesale, however, sort of like TOSLINK optical audio cables.

    Nikon FX used to be made in Japan. Even Z7 Z 6 from Japan. The finish on this tells it’s not Premium ..looks cheap plastic

      Agreed. It aspires to pro, but let’s be honest; the concept of a full time career pro photographer went away with the iPhone. Thanks!

    You'r the best Ken and brutally honest , A 30 years F mount user and this disappointing news that Z 9 and other z' are it now made in third world Thailand where wages and manufacturing costs are much less, but remarkably Nikon still want to charge you premium $$$"s as if it's made in Japan in addition to a new lens system where they now want you to go into so as to optimise Z body capabilities that are also no longer made in Japan except for a few lens examples. Canon is all over these facts and is shining brightly in this space . Canon like you, know how important manufacturing high end professional expensive equipment is that will be show casing that companies precision and how it must be manufactured in the country of origin otherwise it just creates a big question on the companies overall direction . If a 5k or 7k Swiss made Rolex was suddenly off shored manufactured to a third world you wouldn't go near it . Nikon made a big mistake on the Z9 being off shored it needed to made in Japan and especially because this is suppose to be its its Flagship Mirrorless ?

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 года назад

      That’s right. Just as Pentax and Contax didn’t survive the jump to competitive digital, Nikon didn’t allocate enough budget to the development of Mirrorless cameras and fell behind Canon - and I doubt they’ll catch up anytime in the next five years. I’m not sponsored by Andy of these guys and shoot every day so I say it like it is, sorry if I offend brand loyalists. I have photos to make, not egos to stroke. Thanks!
