How to Condition Your Knuckles: Guide to Harden Your Fists
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 сен 2024
- I've recently began conditioning my knuckles, hands, and wrists for self defense. After years of competing in Muay Thai and boxing, I noticed a few bad habits with my fists when punching. I still cringe when I see people hitting a heavybag bare knuckle, with the skin cracked and bleeding. So I decided to build a knuckle hardening program and share it with this easy-to-follow guide.
CAUTION: knuckle conditioning can be a risky activity. It is your choice if you wish to partake -- not mine! This guide is meant to prevent people from doing it incorrectly (i.e. punching brick walls!).

1. Take a very thick AND big book (not too long though), like 1000 pages (500 sheets) and get rid of its cover.
2. Separate each sheet from others.
3. Then take a whole bunch (organized neatly) of these sheets, a hammer, and three VERY long nails.
4. Put sheets to the wall (vertically, like you can read what's on the top sheet) on your face level and then nail the whole bunch to the wall ON THE TOP of it. They go in order: nail in center of the top and the other two in the corners of the top.
5. Use it every day. Hit it (with bare hands) with solid straight punches (jab and cross) 100 times per hand one time in the morning and do the same one time in the evening.
6. When the new day comes, tear the top sheet off by pulling it from the bottom.
7. Repeat 5&6 every day until you reach the actual wall. If you did everything right and regularly, you will be able to hit the wall strongly without fear and damage. Do not forget to hit the nails with the hammer regularly to adjust sheets.

Pan Qing Fu’s martial arts specialty was the iron fist. He often could be seen smashing his fists into surfaces of varying hardness - including iron - as many as 1,000 times a day. He quickly developed the callused knuckles that are the hallmark of iron-fist training.
His amazing abilities earned him a reputation for being “tougher than nails.” While he knew many combat techniques, the iron fist was the method no opponent could counter. With a single punch, anyone he hit would be knocked unconscious. He’s said to have never seen the need to use more than 30 percent of his power in any confrontation. Consequently, many interested students sought him out for private lessons.
Even the Chinese police approached Pan Qing Fu and asked him to teach his iron-fist methods to officers. Because of increasing outbreaks of violence and the growing influence of gangs, handguns had been banned in China. Thus, the police were in need of an efficient and effective martial art for officers to use to defend themselves and apprehend criminals. Soon after the training regimen Pan Qing Fu developed for the police department was put into effect, 23 gang leaders were captured and brought to justice. Pan Qing Fu even rounded up some of them single-handedly.

His knuckles had crazy levels of callous, like bare feet get if you run barefoot for years. He was a great fight choreographer, worked on a number of good movies, particularly the Jet Li Shaolin films. He didn't punch iron with full force, in the videos I've seen...would just give it a good rap, relatively low power, over and over. Was very dedicated to lifelong self-improvement, and loved to pass his knowledge on to others. I'd almost say he had OCD, but I know nothing, only that a lot of the stuff he did went to extremes.

punching bare knuckle forces you to punch correctly in a way you won't break you hands. before fighters used gloves they would break their hands all the time so they had to adapt and punch in a way where they wouldn't break their hands so, bare knuckle is just better man. or mma gloves I'd still recommend barefist
the idea here is to harden knuckles
proper form should be held anyway
dont get it, your knuckles will break ... harder your knuckles ... why dont hit whit the palm? It will not break, it will not hurt you, you got the ability to grab, pull, push or even desperate old school scratch like the old way of boxing.
Palm is good too. But bones cut :)
I agree. In a real fight your hands will be bare; no gloves, no wraps, no pads. Also the first and most instinctual target you will aim for is the face and head, which is a hard surface. Therefore all your training should be bare knuckled. Yes I have punched walls, I have punched walls for over 25 years now with both hands (never know which one I'll need in a real fight); I also regularly do knuckle push ups on all kinds of surfaces, mats, carpet, hardwood floors, pavement, etc. I have no impairment in my hands what-so-ever, other that extremely hard and tough knuckles. It did take several years, but now I can hit a brick wall with out any damage to my hands. Also as Javiancr pointed out Punching Bare Knuckle forces you to have proper form. Its like tightrope walking without a safety net. It forces you to be aware of your form because you know there will be consequences if you screw up. Soon that proper form becomes very ingrained into your muscle memory.
And you can mess up your hand just as easily with palm strikes in real life. Have you ever been throwing palm strikes and caught the target a little high on the palm? The result is that you flex you whole hand backwards and risk breaking the wrist. So you can still mess up your hand throwing palm strikes, and the orientation of you hand and wrists makes it very difficult to do anything but straight forward thrusts with palm strikes (maybe vertical ones too, depending on the situation). Have you every tried to throw a "hook palm strike"? So you might not injure your hand the same way, but you still can injure it...just a different injury. Half dozen of one, 6 of the other, same difference in the end. The important thing is to cause damage to your adversary and win the encounter.
Love the focus on safety and gradual progression. I feel like I could have avoided a few injuries if my first coach had put more emphasis on this stuff.
I've been training in karate my whole life and wouldn't know how to even wrap my hands if I tried. lol Have always hit the heavy bags with bare fists

+fightTIPS Hey Shane, cool videos man. Shane could you do a video on strength training and which kind of exercises are ideal for martial arts and which are not... For example body weight training and weight lifting. From what I've gathered the latter can impact your speed, agility and skills and decrease them. I know there are other factors as well like frequency of martial art training which is supposed to be 70% and incorporating strength training which is about 30%. Should you do them in the same session or on separate days? What do you think? I'd appreciate if you could make a video on that one day. Thanks.
IF you decide to punch a heavy bag naked (no wraps no nothing) just do straights and jabs. Because if you throw an uppercut or a hook and you hit at an angle, your wrist will give out and that can seriously hurt you. All in all I personally dont beleiving in harderning your knuckles as it's basicly you damaging your own hands.
well it is, but its all ultimately damaging something so it gets stronger when it heals.
Mr. Orangeaide Not when doing so can and will lead to damage down the line. Not worth risking a wrist injury for something so tiny as knuckles.
Plague Doc it all leads to damage down the line. and considering that knuckles are what makes contact when a punch connect, id consider them pretty fucking important to condition. even mike tyson broke his hand when he got in a street fight. mike fucking tyson bare knuckle, broke his hand. that guy did more damage by losing to tyson in a street fight than anyone did in his pro boxing career.
Mr. Orangeaide Breaking your hand has pretty much zero to do with your knuckles. The reason mike probably broke his is due to either a bad hit (possible forehead hit). And with his power in his hands, he can shatter his hands. The knuckles do not need to be stronger to protect you nor to give you more power. It's the fact that it's a large mass (an arm or a leg) that shakes the brain. If for example a fat man could swing his big gut fast enough, it could knock you out even though it's just soft fat.
Plague Doc your knuckles and hand in general will adapt to punching something fairly firm. its as simple as that. if it applied to shins and the mauy thai guys that can kick down banana trees, why not hands? and yes concussive force ultimately comes from the swing of a limb, its the hands that make the connection and receive all of the force. i agree that knuckle conditioning needs to be handled carefully and there are serious risks involved, but if you are looking to punch in a street fight, its necessary to some extent.
what about the old video saying conditioning doesnt exist?
I'm sure he was saying in reguards to punching walls.
+archie tong he learned more and realized it wasn't. He's just smarter now lol

Also if I remember correctly the question came from a person that was in amateur boxing competitions hence the quote by Shane "You don't wanna hurt your money makers" so if your that high in boxing to where your doing amateur bouts he was telling people if they were ganna condition their knuckles do it this way in this video and not risk injuring your hands punching a wall.
Bone density can be increased in the hands and any other bones in the body. Particularly easy to increase hand bone density. Combine that with high grip strength = hands of stone.
Remember when u said u wouldn't make a video about this lol
Livin' and learnin', I guess.

Very good explaination about knuckles conditioning. In Kyokushin Karate, we do only simple drills like hitting heavy bag (with or without gloves), Knuckles push up on the floor or mats, and finger push up (it will strengthen every joint in your hand).

Great video, Shane. I'd like to humbly add a bit of knowledge regarding the forearm specific exercises. The exercises you demonstrated are very flexor-dominant (increasing the crushing power of your hands). This is great but it's important to train the other aspects of forearm strength: extension, pronation, supination, ulnar deviation, and radial deviation. Otherwise you might overtrain your flexors and down the line run into some issues like forearm strains and elbow tendonitis due to muscle imbalances. Speaking from personal experience. Thanks!
I feel that this is too conservative. sorry but if you wanna condition your knuckles the best place to look is like Kung Fu guys. they punch through bricks unphased.
Well I have to disagree, considering the hand injuries I've had. It's a gradual process, otherwise you risk fractures, ruptured ligaments, etc.
+fightTIPS I also agree it's very gradual. take years. but some of these Kung Fu guys and other martial arts especially the Chinese ones have a very soft but effective conditioning method. like punching/smacking water and sand. also they have good herbal medicines for healing the hands after the conditioning like dit dat jow etc
u need to have a good understanding of this science which I personally don't but have seen people who do and they can punch trees without pain or injury
To be fair Shane has a black belt in taekwondo. And Taekwondo masters are also known for breaking a ton of hard materials. I think his father has one too.
+Joao Cardisus yeh but martial arts like tkd have been commercialized and watered down. unless he got his black belt in Korea from a legimate tkd master I doubt it means much. I can find kids with black belts, unfortunately many traditional martial arts have turned into this
True that. But if it is legit he should.
However keep in mind that the watered down effect on martial arts is predominantely is the US. If you go to places like europe you can find plenty of legitimate dojos easily. He doesn't have to go to korea only.
when practicing your punches, it is important to get used to using the proper end of your fist. when hitting the head, you must be aware that you need to cover surface area to rock the brain and spread the impact. that is why you use all 4 knuckles. When attacking the body, you focus on your two main knuckles for deeper penetration into the tissue. Shatter a rib easier.
I used to be real fussy about only hitting with the two large knuckles. But I've started to realize that in a street-fight, everything is happening so fast that you may not always land a punch properly - especially if your opponent is bobbing and weaving. So, I started hitting the heavy-bag with more concentration on the two smaller knuckles and soon realized how undeveloped they were (ouch). I'm not going to develop them to the extent I developed my two larger knuckles but some training is necessary, I see now. Just like it's good to bring all your muscles into balance so, too, should the whole hand be conditioned. You may want to throw a slap or whip out a block in addition to punching.
Yeah I broke my wrist because I hit with my pinky lol

Yeah, I had a ‘boxers fracture’ many times. Sometimes you hit them too hard. Good hit with knuckles on a skull means the bones in the hand/the knuckles are going to break anyways. No matter how good you condition them, knuckles are not meant to hit a skull. Anyways, liver strikes and solar plexus strikes are underrated.

Don't punch solid objects. It needs to have flex and give. You will destroy your shoulder.

I think knuckle harding is not as big a deal as trowing a good punch
a good punch to a heavy bag can hurt. A good punch to uneven bone can and will break your hand if not used to it. Its like with everything else you condition.
+GargamelThinks trowing a proper punch is the best thing to keep you're hand safe hand conditions is good but if you can't trow a proper punch you are more likely to hurt yourself
+Benny Beer what you even saying
+GargamelThinks I see what you are saying but but as a boxer you should know to put gloves and warps on and if you can't land a punch or put wight behind the punch it will not matter how hard you're knuckles are
you can feel the difference, it will enable you to hit harder, I'm not sure but I think it may also increase grip strength a bit

So I had something like a fight but not really a fight and I ended up somehow scratching the skin on my middle knuckle on my right hand. It's a bit sore obviously but it is it common?
Yes this is common my knuckles have scratches on them and bleeding but if I need to I can keep punching
For me it is always funny to the normal people go into martial arts and how incredible vulnerability their hands are. Im sitting in a wheelchair my whole life and always used my hands to move around. When i started boxing i had no problems punching the heavy bag without gloves. In fact, i prefer it over gloves. Its crazy how those changes in mobility change your body.
Shane your vids are the BEST
Thanks buddy!
Bro, solid routine. I like it. I work in a grocery store meat department so I just 1,2 jab the plastic swing doors when I go in and out and get funny looks from passing people sometimes. That and curl boxes of meat from here to there while I walk. Again I look funny doing it but now I built a reputation as the only dude who can stack the freezer by himself. Impressing and helping old ladies with strength is kinda funny 🤣
Edit: when I really wanna sharpen my tools I take a glass bottle and tap each knuckle individually until lightly sore because I live in a quiet renter's house so makiwara is not an option at home.
Jezus that bud coming out of his hand 2:29, if you hit someone with that you put another hole in the poor man
is that a good thing? i always thought my fists were deformed or some shit. my middle knuckle sticks out even further than that
insecto It's normal, your middle finger is just more elevated than the others, which makes the knuckle point out more.
Hey Shane, I'm 23 years old, and have never taken any martial arts classes or wrestled. I've been watching and working on my form and technical abilities for about 10 years on my own time trying to mimick and perfect tools of fighters like Cruz, Jones, Anderson, Aldo, Mayweather and McGregor etc. As I've been an mma fan for about 20 years. I finally want to try to achieve this goal of am/pro fighting, but I'm curious am I to old to start now, learning from scratch, joining a gym and be successful? I get a little discouraged when I see a guy like Jones who was almost already a champion by this age, along with Sage Northcutt whose in the UFC at 19, or any young fighter. Could I compete with these guys who've been training TKD and Karate since they could walk? :-\
you can achieve anything you want through hard work. just because you're starting "late" doesn't.mean you can't make it. it may just mean you gotta be more dedicated and put more effort into it.
Hey try it out man, don't live with regrets by not trying it man
+silentreaper invocate Wise words man. I appreciate the reply.
+Tru Champion Thanks. I'd hate to be 40 thinking I should have done it 20 years ago (which would be now). Again thanks a lot man.
Xadow Mxsscre™ yeah thats how i am now, im wondering if i should do it, but i dont want to live with the words "you couldve been something" ringing in my ears till i die
1:05 Puertorican flag on the back!!!
So?
Just proud of my country ❤️✨
Thanks Shane you and your crew is amazing!!
This is unbelievably informative. Thank you.
Literally never wrap my hand when I hit the heavy bag. You won’t have them with you when you get in a fight. Knowing how to fight bareknuckele saved my life a couple of times
Why the FUCK people are afraid of punching the heavy bag?
Kako Mohammed if you're talking about without wraps/gloves, throwing hooks/uppercuts/glancing jabs hard enough will break your wrists and ruin any career you have
Ryan Kwak yeah but then do it easily. I do them,I it hurts
Ryan Kwak only throw straights and jabs a hook or uppercut will fuck up your hand
Kako Mohammed cuz it's a bag ;-;
Ryan Kwak h
But puching wall is best stuff.
And yeah I'm not joking seriously man.
Akash Jaiswal
I used to do that until I injured my knuckle lol

it's never too late to any kind of sport
NO! start, my brother!
no way bro I'm 24 been practicing for a couple years, you should totally start now if you haven't. cuz it does the body good exercise anyways
no its alright , in my boxing club there is some father with his son (for like 3 years now and there both beasts ) its never too late.
is 13 a good age to start boxing
The EverLasting Wolf Yes, it's a very good age to start.
The EverLasting Wolf yes perfect age to start. Don't wait any longer
Yes, but not INTENSE training, don't wanna stunt your growth! Save the 100% effort for 16ish+
+Lachlan
you'd have to seriously fuck something up to stunt your growth from training.
Randalf if you train hard enough to go into a caloric defeceit...
Our team's Aryan punched 4 times to an elder stranger on his head at left side & fight overed because he said bad words to him. After the fight overed he got his right hand's little finder's knuckle dislocated.
What?
TV christezite W.. WHAT??
What the fuck are you saying?
A nigga doesn't punch a guy just for swearing.
SwagTastic Gaming - Minecraft & More Some idiots do.
all your explanations are awesome, great couch👍👍👍
When I was a kid, I crashed with mountain bikes, Rollerblades and bikes.
I broke both my hands a few times and couldn't wright with a pen at school for longer than 10min.
At the age of 12 I started doing martial arts, and I Conditioned my fists by punching walls with a thin cushion in between.
The conditioning was painful but In a couple of years, the pain was gone.
Now my hands do work better than normal, and I can even punch stuff without hurting my self 😋
It works, just don't expect to much and start easy.
