I just did now and it's like the world opened a little more, didn't know that kind of voice could exist. So beautiful.
She is polyphonic. Its extremely rare. Especially in her octove range. She is a once in a lifetime kind of voice.
🤣You guys are going all out with the "where do these people come from"! She is an amazing singer with a crazy vocal tone. Crazy control considering how young she is. I believe she was 18 when she filmed this. I especially love when she is singing folk songs. The overtones she is able to produce are astounding. And of course just like people listen in disbelief with Charlie "Zhou Shen" high notes, no one can believe it when they hear her sing naturally in that deep range as a woman. My personal favorites are Rechenka and Wicked Games. I was introduced to her when she first performed during a vocal contest for disadvantaged children who have spent some significant part of their childhood without parental care named "You are Super" (Ты супер!). She was only 14/15 years old when she performed and her voice sounded so mature and her control was crazy good.

I hope you’ll continue appreciating it - you can check out for example her cover of Wicked Game, where she was just 15. For something more uplifting and pop / energetic, at one of those competitions she was performing a song “Mom I’m dancing”. For something peculiar - folk song Rechenka. A polyphonic dramatic contralto, I think the rarest voice type? WoW! I've heard true contralto voices...Marian Anderson was the best imo but so unusual in pop. Norah Jones, Joan Armatrading, Diana Krall, Lisa Gerrard are other contralto singers I can think of... but Marian Anderson 👍 yeah.

Они не это имели ввиду, они описывали её фишку, в исполении песни в темном оттенке, т.е. когда играют "печальные" (в хорошем смысле слова) композиции на черных клавишах (минор), по типу оперных произведений. Они ни в коем случае не имели ввиду негативный оттенок, наоборот, обратили внимание на её уникальную силу в данном жанре, но также хотели бы услышать её в мажоре, где идут более драйвовые и светлые композиции и такие у Дианы есть, надеюсь в комментариях уже посоветовали, например "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" ))

For me Rechenka will always be a favorite because of Diana's age (14) when she did it, the many techniques used, the complexities of the vocalizations and her already amazing stage presence at that age, just mind blowing.

Sorry for the length of this comment, but there is a lot information to give. This performance took place on September 25, 2021 on a new televised Russian vocal competition called the “ShowMaskGoOn!”. Diana Ankudinova was only 18 years old during this performance. This was a competition that was held over a 9 week period, one episode per week. Diana competed against 8 other professional singers who were also members of the judging panel, and for each individual performance they awarded judging points to each other. When not performing Diana was also a member of this judging panel which brought the contestant total to 9 individuals and each singer was required to perform a different song during each of the nine weeks, and each person had to use different genres and different styles of music.
One of the 9 songs Diana performed was her cover of the Elvis Presley classic, “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. This performance showed what many vocal professionals have previously speculated, that Diana Ankudinova has developed into a true contralto voice type, and for those that may not know, a contralto voice is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto is very, very rare. Diana opens “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, in her low, deep contralto voice.
During a past interview, Diana said she was unhappy with her lack of a higher vocal range, and it was this lack that kept her out of the more prestigious Russian music academies. After one of the most prestigious academies rejected her, she decided, along with her voice teacher to concentrate on improving and extending her upper range.
Now to answer a very commonly asked question about Diana’s vocal range, because vocal range is one of many point in defining a female singer's voice type. At age 13, in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5, a solid Alto range, but still low for a 13 year old girl. In 2021, 5 years later at age 18, during her “ShowMaskGoOn” performance, Diana’s vocal range was again measured. Her functional vocal range now measures from a low of C3 (male tenor range) to a high of B♭5 (Mezzo Soprano range). The improvement and extension to her upper range is also on full display during the middle part of this performance.
But it's not just how low or high Diana can go. It's in the exceptional quality of her tone in both her upper and lower registers. Its her ability to transition seamlessly between both her lower, mid, and upper registers. It's in her timbre, the roundness, fullness, and depth of her voice. Coupled along with her ability to create, access, and use an enormous amount of resonance further define Diana as a Dramatic Contralto which is the deepest, darkest, and most powerful contralto voice type, and is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types. The depth and power of her full Dramatic Contralto chest voice is on full display during the final section of her performance.
So the question becomes, how does she do it? How does this young female singer achieve this low, round, rich, deep, resonant, and profound sound? Without actually scoping her vocal tract while she is producing these low notes to actually see what is or is not happening, the general conciseness from many vocal professionals seems to attribute Diana’s unique vocal ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning Diana was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds, (vocal cords), appear to be longer and thicker than the vast majority of female singers. Her larynx (voice box), also appears to be larger, and her oral cavity (mouth) is larger, plus her pharynx (throat), similarly appears to be longer than other female singers. This combination of vocal anatomy gives Diana the ability to produce the low, deep, rich, full sounds that along with her unique tone quality makes her stand out, but without actually scoping her vocal track, there is no way to be 100% sure.
To conclude, midway during Diana’s performance the judge on the top row who is the first to stand is a well known Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan, who was invited to be a guest judge. Yusif is also married to the world famous Russian opera soprano Anna Netrebko. At the end of Diana Ankudinova’s performance, Diana receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. A fellow judge and competitor, Julia Parshuta, the blond woman standing in the center row dressed all in red is well known in Russia as a contemporary singer. Julia Parshuta looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance, puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total bewilderment and disbelief. Finally, the 9 week competition concluded on November 20, 2021, with Diana Ankudinova being awarded the most judging points from the other competitors over the 9 weeks, and was declared the winner of the series of nine programs.

Diana has a very unique voice. My understanding is that she had a rough early childhood and she didn't speak. She developed her own way because of this and has developed this very deep voice. I think that turning this happy upbeat song into a dark kinda stalky scary sound is perfect for her voice! You need to see her sing 'Renchinka!' AND she is young. Contralto with an absolutely amazing , mesmerizing and hypnotic voice ! I agree the song in a minor key gives the song an unnerving saddened and wanting feeling that Diana is able to project to her audience with unbelievable vocals! Imagine being only 17 at this time and deliver probably the most riveting and compelling version of this song ! This performance was a talent contest in Russia with the most revered artists in Russia ! Diana was invited to perform and actually won the show gaining praises and accolades from the other artists ! Each performer was judged by all the competing artists and had to sing five songs ! Talk about pressure ! I would suggest you listen to more of Diana to really enjoy the journey that many of us are on ! She has a very strong, low, polytonic voice with range.
You guys have to check out her performance of “Rechenka”. It’s a song about a girl who’s about to get married but has nobody to bless her. As far as I know, it’s an old Russian folk song. It’s on a channel called “Kwstas Vagias” and it has subtitles! Her vocals in that song are incredible and something I personally have never heard. The things she can do with her voice is crazy. I’d love to see your reaction to it! :)

@@user-sw5ot9wv9p Sadly it's not on Diana's channel - it was originally on the NTV channel, who broadcast the talent show "You Are Super". However, when RUclips ceased monetising Russian TV channels, it was made private. Kwstas then, as some risk to his channel, decided to upload it, along with Diana's other performances on "You Are Super" so that we could still enjoy it. He has done the same thing with Diana's performances on "Mask" (The Masked Singer).
People who have already heard Dimash singing, they are more prepared for Diana's voice. These people are no longer surprised, they are not speechless, but simply admire the phenomenon of these wonderful singers. Great reaction guys! Diana is an amazing singer. A dramatic contralto who works hard to develop her higher range. I believe she also sings with polyphonic overtones which gives the weirdness effect. You have to review Human, Wicked Games, Rechenka and other performances in competition when she was 14 and 15 yo. She was 18 yo when performing this and is now 20. I repeat myself, but she is amazing.

You have just listened to a true contralto with possibly multi-tonal qualities.. “Diana Ankudinova, A Russian National Treasure” (My opinion), I have been following her for a while. She is another very interesting story that you will discover. Wait until you hear “Wicked Games”, “Take On Me”, "Human" or "Rechenka" Even though it is in Russian you still feel the emotion behind it. I've heard her sing in Russian, English, French, German, Arabic and Spanish so far. No matter what language it is beautiful.
She is a true polyphonic contralto. VERY unusual! If you google polyphonic contralto, most of the results are all about her. (Oh, and Cher, if you can believe that.) Gives me goosebumps all over!!

A song in major by Diana would be What A Wonderful World (and also fitting for the season). Beautiful cover, very relaxed and listenable while still retaining her unique vocal tone.

Greetings from Scotland! Okay, that look on your faces when Diana sang - "I just got slapped with a wet fish" kinda look, is actually very common with first time reactions to young Diana. (18yo here). The second effect is an inability to describe what they just heard. SO, I recommend listening to a bit of a variety to understand what Diana can really do with that unique timbre and vocal control.

Recommending 'Rechenka', 'Derniere Danse' (age 14) 'Wicked Game' (age 15) which are WELL worth hearing and marveling over for both her voice and stage presence even at those ages - These were done on a show called 'You are Super' which I believe was basically for children/young people who had been disadvantaged by being without parents for a significant period of time during childhood (possibly other reasons too but I don't actually know that)
It's said that Igor Krutoy (yes THAT Igor, with Dimash) who was one of the judges on this show, took her under his wing, becoming her mentor both on and off the show....
