I have a feeling that, apart from Nintendo’s oversight, part of the reason why Illumination stuck so close to the game’s designs is because they probably saw the massive backlash Paramount got for the first Sonic movie trailer (remember that abomination?) and learned from that.
But I will agree with Uncle Al here about how it didn’t feel like a Sonic movie (mostly with the first one, due to lack of game elements that are more prominent with the sequel).
@@unknownwill4th549 some mfs make shit up or blow things up to seem like they’re way more prevalent than they really are. I literally binge watched a lot of reactions to the trailer the night it came out and literally nobody was hating on Chris Pratt himself apart from some weirdos in tweets that were featured in those videos. Lol
Chris pratt’s Mario is more easy to get behind if you think of the super Mario bros cartoon where Mario has more of a New York accent instead of Italian.
Even bad movies have great trailers but since this is Nintendo and Miyamoto is keeping close eye on Illumination, there's hope for this movie. I see this having potential.
2:38 I think its the more fleshy face and the slightly more definition on the edges of the eyes. Like its slightly darker, makes them look just a *tad* more sunken into the face. Which I guess is why everything else looks a touch more fleshy.
I’m still hesitant on the Pratt Mario…but seeing how well the voices for everyone else went, plus how faithful the movie looks to be to its source material, I’m willing to hear more from Pratt. Maybe in future trailers we will get a better, longer take of what Pratt is doing for the role. Toad and Bowser sound so perfect for their characters, it genuinely made me smile!
I love it and I am excited. It feels weird with Mario and Luigi sounds more like the actors than the characters, but they don't have bad voices and it gets a pass on my book. Toad and everything Bowser related is fantastic. The visual is fantastic.
Actually, the Sonic movie did have a piano rendition of Green Hill Zone that was notable, but yeah thats about it for music adaptation. It was kinda cool to hear the mario theme on full orchestral display in the trailer, although it was a bit dissonant, both music theory wise and cognitive wise.
When you think about it Uncle Al, now that we got a movie adaptation of Mario, Sonic and Pikachu it looks like that we’ll get a live action Super Smash Bros movie. It’s just slowly coming together.
I'm glad you're giving Pratt a fair shake. While we all initially wanted Charles Martinet to do it, I just don't think his Mario voice, iconic and beloved as it is, would be a good fit for a movie. Especially considering how there will inevitably be an emotional moment where Mario and Luigi have a patented Third Act Misunderstanding (TM) or it looks like Luigi or Toad or Peach is gonna die. I don't think Mario's video game voice would be able to convincingly be sad enough to carry the moment. "Oh-a no! My brother's-a gonna die, I can see the life fading from his eyes-a!"
Something that I think people are forgetting when the bring up the argument that Charles Martinett should’ve had the part is that if Martinett went with the traditional Mario voice, it would be grading (grating?) after a little while. I’m with you on the deal that it makes me think of the Super Show, which I also grew up on. And Hot take incoming, the more I hear Chris’ Mario, the more I like it.
I'm not as excited as I am for Sonic 3, but things for the Mario movie are looking a lot better than I initially expected and there may be hope that the movie's pretty good on top of faithful. That being said, I don't mind the liberties that Sonic took, at least by the time the sequel came around and we got a good mixture of original aspects and game aspects.
the only remark I have to say about Pratt's Mario voice is that it makes me wish Dom Deluise was still alive to voice Mario. I think he'd have done great. Other than that I think Pratt's performance will be passable.
Yeah I'm pretty excited for it. (Also why is no one talking about how for the first three notes of the Mario theme they used the Super Show's version of it.)
Mario and Luigi in this movie kinda look like the Mario and Luigi from AlphaDream's Mario & Luigi RPG series box arts if they were in CG and honestly, they look really damn good in my opinion. But yeah, those eyes, they definitely have that yucky Illumination touch to them. Also, Charlie Day as Luigi is totally gonna be the highlight/scene stealer of the entire movie for sure.
I think this movie could be very special. And though they'll probably pull out Dry Bowser for a post credits teaser, I would shit bricks if instead they went for a reveal that lead into the DK movie that they're likely gonna go for after the DK theme park starts opening up. That, or Wario + Waluigi with celebrity voice actors as ridiculous as the main cast
Yeah when you think of it it becomes more clear that nintendo and illumination had a bunch of creative diffrences I think illumination only drawer the line at the celebrity voice acting but I could be wrong anyways it's clear nintendo has been keeping a sharp eye on the film
I know people are kinda disappointed that we won't be hearing the high-pitched, stereotypical Italian accent, but imo that only works for one liners like "Yahoo!' And "Let's'a Go!" But listening to that for the whole movie? Yeah nah, I'd rather not haha I personally like the more Brooklyn-esque accent
It's like some exective figured out one day, "Wow! People react very positively to designs that look like their original counterparts! I wonder why?" Nitpicks on Chris Pratt's voice aside, I can't believe we're seeing such a faithful U.S. made (with original owner and creator's overseeing) blockbuster film based on a beloved world renowned video game series. Younger people don't realize the horrors of other adaptations we've gone through to see this day.
To be honest right now I really wanna see Cranky Kong in the movie also the Kong family appearance❤ the one thing that caught my eye is that Nintendo has there OWN movie studio and that keep me in shock of what wonders they could do for big screen😮 I kinda wish for a kid Icarus movie but I don’t see that series pushing through I still wish that Gilbert Godfrey was here to play as Cranky kong 😢
I get that Chris didn't have many lines but so did literally everybody else. And they still all performed flawlessly. Kamek had only one single sentence and nailed it perfectly. French Mario proved it can be done, and he had the same lines as Chris. It just sounds like he isn't speaking as Mario, or even an goofy cartoon plumber. He sounds too normal, like a normal plumber.
Personally. I'm hyped for everything except for chris pratt's voice. When I hear Mario. I hear Charles's voice. But now that you mentioned the mario show. (I never watched it). I can open my mind a bit and give it a shot. It may take time for me to get adjusted. But other than that I am excited. I was blown away by Jack Black's bowser... I'm excited
Chris Pratt as Mario is on the same level as Movie Sonic's og-design, imo. It works, but most acknowledge we could have gotten someone way more fitting.
I love the first super Mario teaser man I can not wait for the movie to come out next year especially bowser jack black performance was amazing Chris Pratt voice for Mario little iffy but The more I watch the trailer the more of Mario voice grow on me can’t wait
Like you Al, I too grew up with The Super Show. Lou Albano is the definitive Mario to me. As much love and respect as I have for Charles, I can’t see him doing Mario for this movie. I’m Italian and honestly I don’t need to hear a cheesy Italian accent, I like the Brooklyn voice instead. Also Charles’ voice to me seems best fit for like doing grunts or saying one lines instead of long conversations. We’ve heard Charles make long sentences as Mario during a video game award show and it was just…… a bit too much.
i'm very excited for the movie :3 and speaking of Seth Rogen as DK i remembered that in the mario universe DK doesn't exactly speak human so idk if they'll have him actually speak or have him stay true to his original video game self by just having him make gorilla noises overall im looking forward to seeing my boi in the movie X3
Mario looks almost exactly like fix it Felix from the wreck it ralph movie. I know Felix was inspired by Mario but they've never looked this similar before
I'm optimistic on the end result of the movie, but I will say I definitely want to hear more from Chris Pratt Mario before fully forming an opinion on it. I don't feel strongly positively or negatively, it didn't take away from the trailer in my opinion (Jack Blacks Bowser stole the show and sold the movie for me personally) but I want to hear more from Mario aside from two lines to know how I feel about it. Maybe some character interaction between him and others.
my headcanon with the movie is that Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen are both cast to render the existence of Donkey Kong Junior a secret. i could honestly see Mario having a fast monologue talking over the plot of Donkey Kong+JR and DK94, but have it in such a way that you technically don't know who's voicing who; but both DK and Junior won't be separate on-screen: this would mostly be done to technically be truthful about Seth voicing A Donkey Kong, just not THE Donkey Kong. Like, Seth Rogen could just be doing animal noises as Donkey Kong when he was a baby, and Fred Armisen could probably voice Cranky for like a split second when he's seen on-screen, they can't speak because the only other characters on-screen are Humans (though nothing like a Yoshi). presumably when DK gets his own movie, the voice actors won't be coming back. heck, it's more believable that Donkey Kong's voice would change from when he was a kid, to an adult. the Mario movie might even pull a thing where you see both DK and Junior at the same time, but not Donkey Kong and Cranky, presumably by some mandate by Nintendo to not to show them as directly related, nor imply that Cranky IS the original Donkey Kong. They may just render Donkey Kong as a legacy title of the defender of donkey kong island.
I honestly enjoyed everything about that trailer outside of Mario himself. The design and the voice make me feel like I'm watching a middle aged man do a Mario cosplay rather than the actual Mario. Yeah, you can argue that it's similar to Super Show's voice, but the problem is that was 3 decades ago now. Charles has been the standard voice for a long time, so getting anyone to fill those shoes is not gonna sit right. And if you argue that Mario speaking the entire time would get ear grating, he fully voiced Wario in WarioWare Gold, and that turned out fine. Hopefully future trailers will allow me to warm up to Chris better, but for now, I'm concerned.
This is great. I’m not the only one who doesn’t mind Chris Pratt’s performance of Mario. Like everyone else we will have to wait for more of his performance to be sure. An added benefit for me, I’ve never really seen or heard Chris Pratt performances so I have no idea how he actually sounds like to compare his performance to
i'm also feeling quite good about the movie, even if the plot might be basic because it IS meant for kids. All the voices seem great, and mario's voice is fine honestly. My biggest concern is how they are gonna charactarize dk. I hope they dont just make him ''look he's dumb!''. ALSO THIS MIGHT BE THE FIRST OFFICIAL 3D MODEL WE SEE OF A YOUNG CRANKY IN THIS MOVIE
I think the reason why Hollywood keeps changing stuff so much is because they don't have confidence the original property will have enough of a wide appeal since movie goers are not always gamers or anime or cartoon watchers. This shows me that besides the usual Hollywood celebrity voice actor obsession, Nintendo and Illumination seemed to have a lot of confidence that classic Mario will actually sell tickets, which I'm happy for.
Uncle Al I hope the movie is awesome even if it's Chris pratt and illumination. Danny Devito would be better imo. I do hope we get the Brooklyn accent. Besides that eveything looks amazing 🤩
The whole hate around Chris's voice as Mario not sounding like Mario is silly. People have forgotten in the The Super Mario super show Both Mario and Luigi had Brooklyn accents
with the way the sonic games have been going literally down greenhill shitter zone i can understand and give the sonic movies a pass on alot of things it doesn't really insult the characters as much as sega would do anyways the way they fixed sonics look before the film came out tells me that they listen to the fans feedback, illumination will listen to the money coming from Nintendo since we all now how massively strict they are when it comes to Mario so i dont expect illumination to screw this one up like they did with alot of the other films it made
Illuminations' models animations are a bit... gelatinous. Just look at every character in previous movies. In terms of the movie, it looks good. In terms of the cast, people have an issue with Chris Pratt being the voice has been argued for multiple reasons, of which aren't warranted. His acting is good. His voice acting has yet to be determined with this movie.
I really hope I'm not the only one who thinks that Mario and Luigi's designs for the film are very reminsent of their Super Show designs. I don't know, maybe it's how round or chubby Mario's overall facial structure is, especially around the cheeks.

I'm probably not the first person to say this, but if you go back and watch the trailer (specifically the part right after we see Bowser get the power? star), listen to the SMB overworld rendition that plays. I swear to God it's ripped right from the Super Show.
@@UncleAlPlus As a fan of the show I freaking hope so... the past few days I've been working out how this film could possibly be a prequel to the show itself and theoretically, THEORETICALLY, I think we got a lot of evidence to make this work. 1.) The characters look and sound kinda like their tv counterparts 2.) Mario and Luigi seem to end up in the Mushroom Kingdom in the exact same way, via a warp pipe 3.) In what I think is the show's first episode, Mario, Luigi and Toad have just rescued the princess and are now making their way through ice land looking for the magic to set Peach's kingdom free, and get the boys back to Brooklyn; the film could literally just be the events that precede this 4.) Just now thought of this but what if the Kongs are involved to set up the DK cartoon 😂 I mean I could keep going but there's just too much (in my opinion) for this film to not be a Super Show prequel... But we'll probably just get Chris Pratt doing The Mario in the credits and that'll be it, and hey even if that's all they do, I'll be happy 😂
Besides Chris Pratt mario, all my fears about this movie have been put to rest. We really should have gotten Charles Martinet as the Mario role, but otherwise I'm really hyped for this! Everything is beautiful and I can get used to some of the mild detail changes in some characters, it's the best we can get, especially from illumination
The one questionable decision I see is seth rogan, but I'll have to hear the voice to know for sure. I was initially not sure about Chriss Pratt either but he sold me with the slight twinge of brooklyn, so who knows Rogan might actually pull this off too.
I like most aspects of the movie, just Chris Pratt's Mario understandably throws me off a bit. And just something about the penguin bug me, I guess I'm just a penguin hater
Yeah yeah the trailer was great. But it really wasn’t very funny. It was almost painfully unfunny with the tired old illumination jokes. I doubt that is gonna change when the film releases so it really dampens my expectations…
Okay, you might not find it funny. But I’m already imagining the kids and parents laughing their ass off at the Penguins terrible aim. AS WELL as Toad’s DON’T TOUCH THAT MUSHROOM, YOU’LL DIE!

I knew right off the bat that Chris Pratt’s Mario voice would NOT be the same. But it really wasn’t bad at all. I think we need to hear more of it
A commentary on the Mario trailer that isn’t blind hatred for Chris Pratt? God my subscription to you is deserved.
I agree. Like, he isn't the best voice for him but he doesnt deserve hatred for simply voicing a character.
Which ones were? I haven't seen any commentary's that are just blindly Hatin on em

It's crazy. I felt like the fried rodent was phoning it in, but that doesn't warrant the kind of hate he's getting.
His performance was arguably incredibly underwhelming and unfitting for Mario, especially after everyone else on the cast nailed it perfectly

@@UncleAlPlus As a fan of the show I freaking hope so... the past few days I've been working out how this film could possibly be a prequel to the show itself and theoretically, THEORETICALLY, I think we got a lot of evidence to make this work.
1.) The characters look and sound kinda like their tv counterparts
2.) Mario and Luigi seem to end up in the Mushroom Kingdom in the exact same way, via a warp pipe
3.) In what I think is the show's first episode, Mario, Luigi and Toad have just rescued the princess and are now making their way through ice land looking for the magic to set Peach's kingdom free, and get the boys back to Brooklyn; the film could literally just be the events that precede this
4.) Just now thought of this but what if the Kongs are involved to set up the DK cartoon 😂
I mean I could keep going but there's just too much (in my opinion) for this film to not be a Super Show prequel...
But we'll probably just get Chris Pratt doing The Mario in the credits and that'll be it, and hey even if that's all they do, I'll be happy 😂
Agree 100%
See you and the next trailer at TheGameAwards2022
I think you are a little late to the reaction trend!!!!
