    Their suprisingly ruthless business methods have come up with the Hammerhead, where they employ practices like Microsoft and other corporations do today.
    Spiking their products with bugs so the people have to spend money on upgrades and bugfixes.

    The Mad Cat Mk IV/Savage Wolf is a neat mech that uses the best tech the Dark Age has to offer, but XXL engines are such a liability I'd rather run any of the other Mad Cats.
    And now, with the development of the Alpha Wolf, Clan Wolf has its own take on an updated Timber Wolf just in time for the ilClan era, so I'd expect the Savage Wolf to fade in popularity with the ilClan.

    • @thorveim1174
      @thorveim1174 Год назад +2

      @@DIEGhostfish yeah the XXL is a liability.. however i'd say the ferro-lamellor armor more than makes up for it by making those internals safer.
      basically the savage wolf has squishier insides than its ancestor, but a tougher shell around said innards. (really if you do the math on its effective armor, it matches the kind of armor assault mechs have in the worst cases. SRMs tickle it, its immune to crit-seeking through the armor, immune to LBX cluster ammo, and the list of benefits of that armor goes on)
      For me the most questionable thing is the armored gyro... Why bother armoring internals and spending 2 precious tons for it that could be spent on useful heatsinks when the mech is all about keeping its internals safe from getting hit in the first place?

      @@nexusdrop7863 for tabletop, savage wolf has MUCH more armor durability than the Timby (but way less useful quirks... like, why does it have quirks that only benefit it in melee combat with either mechs or infantry, especially when its loadout has no anti infantry weapon nor an incentive to go in punching range of the enemy?). in fact its actual effective armor can be compared to what an assault mech would carry, and thats in the worst case scenario. SRM boats will CRY when faced with a savage wolf as its armor ffectively cuts SRM damage in half. Oh and its immune to LBX cluster ammo as long as there is armor as well.
      That focus on armor durability could also make it shine in a campaign, helping prevent expensive to fix internal damage.

    One of my favorite brawlers, I prefer running dual ATM 9s with the ER PPCs instead of the Streak SRM6s. The main issue with the prime variant is 2 of the 4 SSRM6s face rearwards. Also regarding the XXL engine, it actually generates 5 heat STANDING STILL, I feel like the chassis could benefit from running a smaller XL engine but would lose some of it's character. Performance wise its the Formula 1 car of battlemechs, with the price to match, it's high strung and fragile in certain places but can absolutely dominate in the hands of a skilled but possibly crazy pilot.

    A big reason why I think clan wolf more readily accepted the mad cat 4 and not the 2 or 3: 2 and 3 were complete reimaginings, the first turning it into an assault mech and the 3 into a medium mech; it was blatantly obvious these were just trying to coast on the success of the Timberwolf. The Mad cat 4 however isnt a reimagining, but a recreation of the original using technology that wasnt available at the time (and the loadouts reflect that): its purely a modernized timberwolf, and maybe its why clan wolf is more OK with it than the previous sea fox mad cats.

    The Savage Wolf is just a scam to make a more expensive Timber Wolf which is already quite expensive. Its only real benefit is its Ferro-Lamellor Armor for +20% better armor. The Savage Wolf costs 370% as much.
    Clan Sea Fox really make a buck with the sales before the Dark Age.
    Natasha Kerensky for a period piloted a more economical Stormcrow/Ryoken II equipped with 2 SRM-6s, 2 ER MLs, 2 ER PPCs, and 5 JJs but instead used an Extralight Engine and Ferro-Fibrous Armor. It was about 20% of the cost of the Savage Wolf she later used.
    XXL Engines is a nice novelty but not useful for general use. The reason why the is increase in Heat. Since the XXL generates 5-7 more heat you have to equip more heat sinks, making the decreased weight pointless. The designs that could most benefit from an XXL Engine are not combat models, but scouts. Since scouts are lightly armed they do not generate as much heat. You could take a Spider, give it an XXL Engine and increases it movement range and speed by +50%,

  • @thorveim1174
    @thorveim1174 2 года назад +1

    about ferro-lamellor: if i'm correct, its 20% damage reductin or more. Basically for every 5 damage or less a single attack gives, you take off 1 point of damage. That means a 5 damage attack will deal 4 against ferro lamellor, but that a 6 damage attack will also be lowered down to 4, for a 30% damage reduction.
    Even more interesting is that it renders LBX cluster ammo completely harmless, reducing all its hits to 0 damage, without a chance of critting or even hurting the pilot on headshots. Same applies to LRM missiles that end up as a 1 damage grouping. SRMs also suffer a lot against it, having their damage sliced in half no matter the size of the rack.
    Overall its durability is an interesting topic: Itruns a bit hotter despite the heat sinks when on the move and once the armor is breached it dies faster than its ancestor, but said armor is also harder to crack in the first place. I think the fact its BV is basically the same as the timberwolf does say how comparable they are in the end. (hell, the timberwolf D and savage wolf have a measly ONE BV difference). Quirk wise the savage wolf is weird though.. its positive quirks only help when attacked by infantry trying to bust its legs or swarm it and when punched by other mechs to keep its footing, both of which suggesting a short range use the prime config isn't really suited for... while the timberwold gets weaker head armor (not that much of an issue since its only 1 point) and brings a REALLY useful medium range accuracy bonus quirk.

      Yes. It has a damage reduction factor this is being a bit overlooked IMO. Ignoring the first point of damage and every 5th point of damage after that per hit is extremely strong. No TAC, no AP rounds, no tandem charge warheads to cause cheap crits. It really is a fast Assault mech dressed as a Twolf, it would have been better served with more original weapon configurations.

      I did make a sheet for a variant with just that: more heatsinks, 2 small pulses in the CT, making it run way cooler, have more effective firepower,a nd have better close range capabilitya nd the ability to swat infantry, which is good since its quirks allows the savage wolf to not fear infantry as much
