BATTLETECH: The Dire Wolf

- One of the more powerful #Battlemechs ever constructed, the #Direwolf, or #Daishi, is an assault-#omnimech which can lay waste to entire formations of #InnerSphere, or even lesser #Clan machines.
In this video, we are going to examine this #ClanSmokeJaguar, and #ClanWolf battlemech. This will even eventually include its arrival in places like the #WolfsDragoons, #RepublicoftheSphere, or #ROTS, and #ClanHellsHorses.
There are only a handful of machines like this one, that have made such an impact, and to be the chosen mech for so many famous pilots, including Victor Steiner-Davion, Kurita Hohiro, and Natasha Kerensky.
The last Mech from Technical Readout 3050, is now here, and is on display.
We have a special guest as well, who will be linked in this area after the video premiers.

In my best Tex voice.... 'Clanner language changed radically in their time outside the Inner Sphere. So much so that communications were... complicated as Clanners start answering Aff and demanding a Batchall. But sometimes you just need to say '$&*# YOU!!!' And the Clanners chose to speak those words ... with a Dire Wolf'
That is indeed something Tex would say.
You captured his soul with this one 👌
The Dire Wolf is the recurring nightmare of the Atlas, if an Atlas could dream.
>implying the machine spirit doesn't dream
HERESY
If a Marauder can dream, why not an Atlas?
@@135forte I know one Marauder hungers and schemes.
Do Mechs dream of Clanner omnis?
The Inner Sphere name for this mech, Daishi, is rumored to mean "Great Death". Not so! It actually translates to "Oh lawd he comin'!"
Just slowly :p
Gotta love that in-universe even the other clans go "oh god not these fucking guys again" whenever the smoke jaguars show up.
"I’ve been killing fools like you since before you were born, and I’ll still be doing it long after you’re dead!" - Natasha Kerenski Pilot of the Widow Maker
"No sir, nothing unusual on Scanners, i think the clanners couthed and run."
Rounds the corner in his centurion and Faces off a Daishi C in a range of 250 Meters.
Dire Wolf my beloved 😩
One day, Dire Wolf will love us, as much as we love her.
Louis XIV had all of his canons made with "Ultima Ratio Regum" stamped on them. The Last Argument of Kings. The Dire Wolf is like that but for Battlemechs. Great job, Red. It's a worthly look at this 3050 era Last Argument. And that secret variant revealed toward the end?!?! I wont spoil it for those that have not watched the video yet. But WORTH IT.
I like this latin phrase and I will use this.
Glad to hear the dulcet voice of TheB33f once more. From the man who brought us the great configuration of the Laser Drill Breaker and the Direstar, it seems only fitting that he brings us the opening to this guns on legs mech.
It was a blast working with B33F on this one.
Love that I couldn't understand 90% of the first 2 minutes. Great content.
I was being sarcastic, I don't deserve your like BigRed. Please forgive me for my transgressions.
In BV terms, your opponent wanted to play a 4k game and you didn't want to think, so you just brought one mech.
For those like me who struggle to brain.
*adjusts glasses*
That is 7 urban mechs of the classic variety, and all of an 8th one but the air conditioning to use for spare parts.
(7.9 urbanmechs apparently)

17:38 for those that know, LOL. For those that don't, she was roasted alive in the cockpit by a Jump Jet!
I had originally heard it was Rhonda Snord in her highlander that did it, but it turns out to have been Joanna of Clan Jade Falcon.
In the middle of a sandstorm -- or was it a tornado...been years since I read the novel that battle took place in.
No, was it not Natasha that roasted Joanna? Natasha basically got her DWF stripped of all weapons and laid on its back, and Joanna was talking mad shit, so Natasha lifted her DWF’s leg & fired her JJs into the cockpit at point-blank range. I think it was the Trial to allow the Wolves to get off-planet after being back-stabbed by the Falcons.
@@19Pyrus70Natasha’s toasting of Joanna was in a canyon/ravine during the Falcons’ attempt to eradicate the Wolves.
@@ESC_907
That might be. But I remember something about a sandstorm -- or some kind of bad weather -- taking place and both of them having their 1-on-1 duel right in the middle of it.
@@19Pyrus70 Joanna was a member of a newly deployed Sibko. This was around the time that there was the “Traditionalist” older groups, and the impatient younger groups. There was one among them, a guy, who was a Wolf plant. They went out the night before and laid some kind of trap I think? It was definitely a canyon. Look up I Am Jade Falcon, it is even on the cover art. Ah, Trial of Possession for the Gash of Twycross, unfortunately my Kindle app does not display the page number. -Chapter 31
"History has often taught us that the path to victories in the future is not to rush into battle like the Smoke Jaguars or the Jade Falcons. Where they rush into battle, charge where angels fear to tread, we know that victory is a matter of stalking one's prey. The hunt, the pursuit, the methodical wearing down of one's foe, that is often the key to victory. Let the Falcons say what they will about Ulric Kerensky. We shall show them how true Warriors achieve victory! ”

By Kerensky's shining head, I did not expect B33f to make a guest appearance in a lore channel such as yours, this is a glorious surprise.
I've been a fan of the B33F for years. It was genuinely amazing that he was willing to work on this video with me. Huge props to him. I look forward to his new content coming out over the coming weeks and months. It's a great time to be a fan of the franchise atm.
Wait the b33f is back? 👀
@@ashtonshephard3852 Keep an eye on his channel :D
Direstar is genius, fire one round to utterly annihilate the enemy then melt itself into a trench hole from the heat for added protection.
One of the most dangerous Clan mechs ever designed. Even in MWO, this mech is a beast to face! It deserves it's IS name, Daishi.
Clanner: Put all the guns on my mech
Engineer: What do you mean all the guns?
Clanner grabs engineer by throat and stares into his terrified eyes.
Clanner: Are you deaf quiaff? ALL THE GUNS.
Engineer: Aff
They even had a variant with the anti-pigeon laser in the head. Truly, a mech for all occasions!
Just finished painting a dire wolf last night, some of the gaps between the arms and body are a pain to get to. but the pure firepower on it is wild
Those arms are way too close to the legs for painting fun. But being playable straight from the box is a big selling point for the CGL minis.
Great Video! Thanks B33f for hijacking this thing.
It was great lol
I really like the A. All ranges, all weapon types, fully cooled. Able to headcap. A to-hit bonus on some of the big guns. AMS for defense. It's just a great breakthrough mech.
"Wait we're up against WHAT?" One of said multiple lighter enemies that are supposed to swarm the clan assault. Allegedly the reason it is forbidden to say "We can hold the line" in the combine.
I totally forgot about the dire star. The most terrifying thing on two legs sice the Cretaceous period.
If ever there was a nightmare to stalk the dreams of mechwarriors, this has to be it.
Anyone know if there is a mech sheet available for the Dire Star? Or better yet a miniature?
I am so glad for that final build, yes, that's perfect. This is the future Humanity deserves.
I like Clan mechs. If they solved the logistics problems they could be like Skobel Mechworks. Aka the guys who made The Warhammer.
yeah if they had maybe produced parts and maybe mechs on the worlds they conqurered during the invasion they could have solved their logistical problems and even if they still lost to comstar they'd be all set for when they got banished from the homeworlds.
I thought StarCorps made the Warhammer.
@@garrettharriman6333 *Checks my Tex Talks Battletech video on the matter on my hard drive.*
Well, shit. You're right. Skobel made the weapons and other mechanical shit for The Warhammer. My mistake!
It's truly a shame just how many well-designed Clan 'Mech lines have fallen victim to loss of production facilities.
@@sheilaolfieway1885 They did try, and eventually some did get working mech factories, but aside from their own arrogance, they had limited numbers of pilots, limited training output, and the locals REALLY didn't want to work under these technobarbarians.
Well with that targeting computer this brings a new meaning to "Reach out! Reach out and Touch Someone!". Always a good listen there Big Red, keep it coming.
Thank you Robert!
I was delighted to see the Daishi making its appearance. This was always my preferred seat in MW4, my intro to mechwarrior off the tabletop, thanks to that lower profile. And truly, I owe it even more for introducing me to the majesty of SRMs I had before neglected.
"We will resist with any and all means at our disposal the efforts to subjugate and enslave our freedoms. We fight with the truth on our side, and we simply ask that everyone listen and judge accordingly. In the end, I know we shall be victorious" - Prince Victor Steiner-Davion, Pilot of the Prometheus
Clan wolf-in-exile assisted Victor in operation Bulldog, and then the dark ages threw that alll away and brought us the fake clan wolf with the son of the bitch of the universe at it's head...
@@sheilaolfieway1885No arguments about what Katherine Steiner-Davion was, but don't forget that he was also the son of Victor Steiner-Davion as well. Which only brings up more questions about Timberwolf pilots and the New Jersey Past Time.
Just so you know, the Dire Star is a variant of the Dire Wolf in HBS Battletech's BTA 3062 mod. DW-S Direstar. But it has 12 clan ERPPCs, instead of 11. IDK how they managed to cram in the extra PPC tho.
HBS doesn't follow the *exact* same build-rules tbh.
They had to keep the pace balance between action and tactics....little more dakka to keep the gun bunnies happy
Frighteningly in both Roguetech and BTA, there are mechs in the game that are almost purely designed to ruin your day. Their alpha usually results in a catastrophic engine overrun (or instant shutdown at least) or total expenditure of their limited ammo (Rocket builds).
@@albertko1 this is true. The COIL urbanmech can be a more frightening sight than a Dire Wolf sometimes.
@@albertko1 Was playing a forested night mission on RT and suddenly 12 PPCs blasted me from off map the first 11 missed so I thought they were light PPCs till the final one hit for CERPPC damage and I felt terror.
Okay getting the legend who gave us such monsters as the Dire Star and the Giga Drill Laser to give the intro to this notorious nightmare was genius!
This guy gets it. :) lol
My funniest combination in a direwolf 2 C-ERPPC, 3 C-LPL and 30 DHS in total. Every so often you have to stop firing a gun, but a good turn, "dethrone" of laughter to anyone.
There is half a ton free and one slot in the head... to install any absurdities in the cockpit, such as a fridge for ice cream, a collection of old games to play on the computer, perhaps to install an additional air conditioner for the pilot (or a fan).
Or if you want to be more practical a Light TAG.
Nothing less than one of the true monsters of the Battletech universe.
It really is. It was a major focus for a long time too. One of the boogiemen of Battletech.
As a proud member of the Alpha Strike mafia... I think I need to do the conversion of the Dire Star for Alpha Strike.
You know what Dire Wolves are, right? They're like wolves... but they're DIRE.
Dire Wolf in Finnish is hirviösusi.
Translate it back to english and it becomes Monster Wolf. Which this mech definitely is. 😁
Oh. I always just thought they were regular Wolves, but with severe digestive issues. Who knew?

What an absolute monster mech.
Excellent video as always!
I'd just like to add the utterly insane X variant, a hodgepodge of random guns that still manages to be deadly because it's a Clan assault with a targeting computer.
Dire Wolf X
Large pulse laser
Heavy medium laser
2x ER micro lasers
Ultra AC-10
LB 5-X AC
SSRM2
SRM 4 (Artemis)
LRM 15 (Artemis)
The Wolves are having a great howl for 2 weeks! I never learned how the name Daishi came about, so when I learn new lore of the series, it always brings me great joy! As a lover of shotguns, LB-X is my go to autocannon.
To be fair, the Dire Wolf is more a Jaguar Mech than a Wolf Mech, just due to who produced it and configured it.
@@BigRed40TECH very true. Again, I'm so glad I'm back into this wonderful franchise! Whenever I get into a series, I like to learn about the lore as much as possible. I just meant because last week, the Timber Wolf, and today, the Dire Wolf.

This should be good. Nice surprise to hear The B33f join in the fun.

@@BigRed40TECH Thanks. I definitely did. 😎
This was one of my favorite mechs in the Mechwarrior 4 series. I would build one with 2 Large lasers, 4 medium pulse lasers, a LRM 15, and a LBX-20 in each side of the torso. I spent more time overheating from the enemy mechs exploding from being shotgun blasted at close range. Fun times.
Heck yeah!! Downloading this to listen to on my drive to Galveston tonight!
I used to think the Annihilator was the end-all-be-all of firepower in Battletech. Then I saw a Dire Wolf, and resolved to salvage one at all costs! #yoink
Ah, but have you heard of the Bane/Kraken? It's not an omnimech, but it's still an incredibly potent weapons platform/well armored test bed.
Just started, enjoyed the Cameo, this better end with a jole review of the Direstar.
Thank you, Big Red-40TECH.
No thank you!
omg, its the b33f speaking!!!!! wwooooohoooooooaaaaaa, this brings up so nice memories of MWO times (long gone sadly)... but still, thank you for this
There will be even more fond memories for you in short order, because B33F is making videos again. There should be something coming soon.
All kneel to The Great Death!
This, is the peak of firepower, the only mech that can remove other assaults with a single alpha.
I like to run my dire with a very simple and effective build.
Dire Wolf Prime, with 9x cERLLs and every slot filled with DHS.
Nothing can ignore the beams of destruction, and when chain-fired the lasers can shoot continuously without pause until you overheat.
90 damage at a kilometer range is devastating.
I call this build " _The Eye of Death_ "
Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battlemech.
The King Crab may be my top favorite Assault battlemech, but I still look on the Dire Wolf with great reverence.
Thing's a beast. Every time I'm faced with one, my first thought is "Ah crap, it's a Daishi!"
Even if I happen to be using one as well.
The Dire Star Reminds me of the "Sleepy" Awesome build for Battletech 2018. Kill. Sleep. Kill. Sleep.
Amazing video enjoyed every moment of it. Can't wait for 3055
Thank you Defiant!
TheB33f! The legend himself!
Narrated by the greatest mechwarrior of our time
I spit out my soda when I heard the B33F's voice. I require another one.
It was an honour to work with B33F on this video. I was so hyped as the video came together.
Wonderful video about a truly menacing 'Mech. What would have made it more terrifying would have been the Smoke Jaguars habit of massing Dire Wolves together in a Star and using it as a battering ram to just smash aside any opposition. And if you're driving largely 3025 tech stuff against a Star of Dire Wolves coming slowly at you, you're probably in a LOT of trouble unless you massively outnumber them, or can break up their formation or have things like artillery and the like. But a Star of Dire Wolves could easily smash aside a Company without breaking a sweat.
One thing that always surprised me is that you don't see a Dire Wolf with a UAC-20 or LB-20 until you get the S config although I would assume that weapon mix would be around in REVIVAL too, or perhaps the design was seen as being too slow to bring that big gun into range.
"Fast and agile like a slab of marble..." that's what Mechwarrior 2's user manual opening line was about the Dire Wold. I still remember it after decades
Fun fact, you can produce a mini-Direstar with actual TT omnimech construction rules. It "merely" has 8 erppcs instead of 11 since you can't remove any armor or DHS from the base DW model. You even have room for the single jump jet from the MWO version. And, I guess, a light active probe for that last half ton.
I used to run a version that had 3 large pulse lasers, a targeting computer, an ultra ac/10, 10 extra double heat sinks and jump jets the rest of the tonnage I devoted to ammo. Light on weapons but I could fire everything, walk and kill any mech with one shot if I used the targeting comp if I hit.
I just found your channel a couple of days ago. While your Stone Rhino video is outstanding, having TheB33F and his Dire Star costar in this one makes it my favorite thus far!

Of all the battlemechs that exist, to me The DireWolf is the incarnation of Death itself
So the new plan is to turn the dire star into a tabletop mech…will it be effective? Eh…maybe, but it will be fun….I shudder at the BV costs of that thing.
Best video so far
The Dire Wolf is a classic clan mech. It shows off the decadence of the Clan.
It will overheat or run out of ammunition, the common clan problem. The Prime Is loaded with various weapon-sets, but most of them are inadequate for whatever target they aiming for.
Assault battle mechs as general rule benefit the least for having an Extralight Engine. 54kph in a 80-100ton machine allows you a lot of equipment options, so critical space is more important, and the lost durability of an XL-Engine in the side torsos is notable. An Atlas is tougher than a Dire Wolf.
A mech as subtle as slam firing a Winchester 1897 Trench Gun point blank into their face and then gut them with the bayonet afterwards.
NGL when you said MWO I thought Beef was going to talk about the Direwolf Ultraviolet
You forgot the most Dire mechwarrior of them all... Mark Knopfler.
