UK REGISTRATION PLATE LAWS - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 3D/4D, SHORTENED PLATES AND MORE!

  • In today’s video, we discuss everything Number Plates and the rules surrounding them here in the UK. From your bog standard plates, shortened plates all the way to your custom 3D/4D plates, we have got you covered with everything you need to know.
Number plate standards are set by DVLA not the Police however it is the Police that have to enforce them.
The new BSAU 145e standard replaces the outgoing 145d and are mandatory from 1st September 2021. After this date only 145e standard number plates can be purchased but 145d can still be used on your car if you already have them. 145e does change some things you can have and hopefully the video explains this for you.
The information in this video is correct as of 10th April 2021.
Not covered in the video is numberplate character typeface/style and size. This is because there is only one typeface and size allowed. The characters have to conform to this otherwise they won’t meet either 145d or 145e. For instance you cannot have italic or German style writing.
I hope you find this informative. Stay safe

@@GCMYT Credit where credit is due. Perhaps you were lucky finding Adam and he and his superiors were enlightened to authorise his involvement, but it was acting on your own initiative to suggest it the first place that sets you apart. I'm no boy racer but a 63 year-old who is young at heart (even if the rest of my body is knackered) and it is heart-warming that you prove that not all lads your age are reckless and an accident waiting to happen. If I were to have a grand-daughter I would be reassured were you to be her boyfriend and I hope that her parents share the same opinion. You should approach some lubricants/tyre/performance brakes/car polish companies marketing departments and point out that they are missing out on a growing channel and the opportunity to get their products and brands worthwhile exposure. I loathe the Met Police. Really can't stand them. They continually fail to impress me both privately and professionally and are a dishevelled and undisciplined rabble.
But the Traffic Police get a pass in my book, because I have never had them be rude, sarcastic or arrogant to me. Usually they advise and often help you do the right thing. Never had a ticket in 30 years of motoring, even when caught bang to rights on one occasion. Unlike so many of the arrogant bullies and liars I find on response teams or the TSG Einsatzgruppen.

I thought Q-Plates were used when the DVLA can’t prove the year of a vehicle.
For example, something purchased in 2004, registered in 2012 but no paperwork to support it’s an 04 would be a Q. Or a kit car that has no donor car with no registered year.
Interesting that the DVLA are issuing Q plates as like a “punishment”.. would be interested to see if this has actually happened.
    Great videos👌🏻💯

  • @arthurdanielles4784
    @arthurdanielles4784 3 года назад +1

in the UK (= for foreign viewers) the DVLA (Driver vehicle licensing authority.) issues and regulates all vehicle licensing, all drivers licences. Records all driver vehicle and licencing offenses. They also are involved in fines, legal decisions made by courts re vehicles/drivers. 👀A points system is in effect in the UK where drivers who commit offences can receive 'points on their licence' for designated offences. 👀They can also 'suspend' or terminate a licence, licensing. 👀 If a vehicle is registered with the DVLA and you are NOT using it on the road etc 'public highway' then you must inform DVLA re that and if you forget or fail to do so they can issue a non negotiable fine (£60+) it is a very 'autocratic' institution but it has its good, bad and indifferent aspects which at times can be open to abuse/complaints. 👀A vehicle in the UK that does not have correct licensing, valid MOT or insurance can be seized and scrapped or auctioned. The NUMBER PLATE RECOGNITION SYSTEM is employed by DVLA, law enforcement etc extensively throughout the UK whether FIXED or via MOBILE units. 👀 The original concept was derived from being able to track criminals especially 'terrorists' etc. HOWEVER it has been used for investigations where tracking of a vehicle movements can lead to arrests, court cases etc. 👀The criminals use various methods to get around some of the regulations / use of; number plates. 👀Cloning of a same vehicle number for instance. Lets take a car with the reg plate DH34 2LA being driven legitimately in Glasgow? A car with the same number plate appears on cameras in London committing an offence ? DVLA send out a letter to the 'owner of the vehicle with that plate number'? But the real owner is in GLASGOW??? 😶The criminals activities can cause hell for the legit owner, as they have to convince the police/DVLA that THEY did not commit the offence. HENCE why the number plate systems ie getting one, using one have changed extensively to try and prevent this kind of fraud. 👀

I don't get why spacing with the lettering is an issue, if you type in the reg without any spaces (or add spaces inbetween letters etc) into the gov checker or any similar plate lookup service it finds the car fine anyway. Don't see why there would be an issue with it if the police actually updated their ampr since they're probably using the same tech as years ago. After all, its the characters on the plate that are the identifier not the spacing.

The only time plates changed before that was pre 1973 (black/white - although now allowed up to 1980) and pre-suffix 1963 you can have taller 3 1/2” letters.

What on god’s green earth is a 4D number plate?
Standard plates have height and width - 2D
3D would be height, width, and added depth (which would be the raised numbers/letters) . Is the 4th dimension time?

just a quick one on Q plates, while yes a Q plate is supposed to stay on the vehicle for the rest of its life, you can try to obtain an age related plate but with that you need to provide a lot of information to prove that whatever vehicle it is, actually is the vehicle with the information. I bought a 2000 BMW r1150 GS which was on a Q plate as it was an import from Switzerland and the person importing it didn't have all the relevant information to say the vehicle with this VIN was in fact a 2000 Model BMW R1150 GS, it was an absolute bargain price because it was on a Q plate but insurance was astronomical, contacted the DVLA and managed to send all the relevant information about the Bike and heard back that the vehicle is going top be put on a UK W Reg. They do check these on a case by case basis and they will send you out a letter with some guidance on what documents you might need to get the ball rolling

I'm glad this has been cleared up as it might stop some of the idiots that responded to your previous videos saying 4D plates and Gel plates weren't legal and saying only the plate manufacturers were saying they were, as opposed to the actual BS standard to which I posted a link!
We REALLY need this guidance given to every traffic officer to avoid them misunderstanding the law! I'm anything but a young boy-racer but I have 4D plates in Audi-Sport holders and they look brilliant!

    1. If a plate meets all the standards but doesn’t display bsau145d/e will a police officer still have an issue ??
    2. With reference to Owens update about 145e and side logos, does this apply to electric vehicles as most new ev’s have this now?? Thanks in advance!!!

What defines “removable” characters when it comes to 3D / 4D plates? If the characters are not allowed to be removed does that not mean they should be an integral part of the plate?
I’ve heard some people who have had registration characters come off during pressure washing a car as they are just stuck on.

Hi George / Owen 😃 very useful information . thanks for clarifying the legality of modified number plates , though I do have a couple of questions for Owen please.
In addition to the gel plates I quite often Spot cars that have retro fitted old style pressed steel number plates ,like ones found on classic cars (black on the back not yellow), is this aloud? .
also another example let’s say a late 80’s early 90s car with a flags or emblems or a printed borders -fitted before any legislation changed , as these were applied years ago before the law changed . Can these plates be left on or do they need to be replaced?
    Many thanks

Fixings should have been mentioned. Putting screws on in such a way that it makes the plate look different is cracked down on. There is also a requirement that the new plates are NIR legible at different angles. I wonder how raised lettering will interfere with this legibility and so in effect be banned in a roundabout way.

I may of missed it but has Owen covered metal pressed number plates? As far as I can see my plates are correct letter size and spaced correctly but what’s the laws on them. Sainsbury’s anpr always displays my reg correctly as I go up the ramp into the car park.

A metal plate is classed as a show plate, a legal plate under BSI; BS AU 145d/ BS AU 145e should be made from reflective material and not have a substance applied to it to make it reflective such as how metal show plates are made.
Best swap out as the 5-o are going to be hot on this in 6months time, Up to £1000 fine.

@@DriveWayRay I know mine work for cameras paying for things etc, had police behind etc nothing being said, but with new legislation they might fancy topping up their monthly targets. I got spares in the trunk, but the trick is you can get BS AU 145d 3D/4D plates before September and it will be legit until they change their views on the new standard. It took 20yrs to update the last standard.
