- Today we elucidate the fall of the 8th Legion of the Adeptus Astartes: The Night Lords.
From the slums of Holy Terra to the unforgiving world of Nostramo, the 8th Legion would be comprised of the worst dregs of humanity.
Further descending into depravity and slaughter with the return of their Primarch: Konrad Curze, the Night Lords would forever be condemned to history of bloodshed and infamy...

One of my two favorite traitor legions. Love that they didn't turn to Chaos, they just decided to stick it to an Imperium that hated them for being exactly what they were made for.
In their own way they where the victims of the people they victimized. They did their job to perfection and they got judged for it.
@@mathiashansen9108 but also it kinda didn't work. Fear wasn't sustainable on Nostramo, his soliders got worse and worse in his absence. The problem with the nighhtlords is konrad is wrong, a world built in fear is an unsustainable one. He saw it in the faces of his own space marines he grew to resent and hate. He is wrong, it's not actually an effective way to build a world.
Now don't get me wrong, I love silliest as much as the next guy but burning villiages as a military is more destructive then flaying just a few of the world's leaders children in front of everyone. They are weirdly the least violent legions.
@@punkhippe ofc it's not sustainable but it's a way of keeping things in check. The Night Lords was good at what they where ment to do but what then IF the great crusade went through and the Galaxy saw peace? Neither the Night Lords nor World eaters would have a place anymore. None the less they still did their job to perfection in their own way even tho it was wrong
What’s the other ?
I'm surprised the Night Lords don't get more third-party love; they're Chaos Space Marines in almost their purest and most minimalist form.
i think what makes the nightlords interesting, is the fact that they are evil murderers, they seem way more human than the other traitor legions. unlike the others who either don't care, love killing, or delude themselves into thinking they're somehow justified based on a 10,000 year long grudge, they know they're assholes. and they make no attempt to be anything else. they actually have a decent enough reason to feel betrayed unlike the others who still believe in Horus's lie. they were meant to be terror troops, yet they were scorned because they were too good at it. they don't deserve sympathy or anything, but i think it's the fact that they actively choose to be evil, is what gives them the ability to show, shocking amounts of kindness and even empathy and compassion once in a blue moon. looking at you Talos.
it's a weird dynamic. who's more evil? they guy who feels angry, bitter, and thus lashes out in evil ways while trying to justify it, or the guys who were made to be evil, know their evil, but will show empathy if so inclined.
wow this is a bloated overly long comment
Underrated comment.
I think its better to be born a monster and become and do good through immense effort. Than to be born a perfectly good moral person and just stay that way, even though its "good". The former can better protect their loved ones from pure evil doers as well.
@@bxmully Parthranax would like to know your location
He needs a place to lay low from the blades
Not a bloated comment in any way. Actually well thought out and explained. I like how they have no qualms about being judged; better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you are not. I may go in search of the books about them now.
As I have always believed, what makes the night lords stand out is that the night lords are one of the only factions who are evil out of choice.
The Emperor of Mankind created his Space Marines to conquer the Galaxy from the horrors of both Alien and Mankind, but he also realized that he could conquer from of these through a very primitive emotion, FEAR. The Night Lords were the Emperor weapon of Terror, where the Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors were to siege a planet, or to enemies who he wanted destroy with no trace of them he will send the Iron Hands and the World Eaters, but if he wants to send a message to his enemies he will send his monsters of the Night Lords to do the horrific deed. Perhaps if their Primarch was more sane and noble their fate and destiny could have been avoided, sadly that will not be the case as Conrad Cruze was a total monster who plunge his entire legion into infamy for their betrayal of the Emperor and his Imperium.
Konrad actually took pride in the fact that he didn’t wipe out entire cities, that he actually preserved what he could, he hated how he was treated and that’s understandable.
"There are monsters, and the monsters we make to fight them. Both are the same, the difference is how we see ourselves." EoM
No matter which Empire you study, the ruler ALWAYS had two individuals in their service, an executioner and an assassin. One of the functions of the Night Lords was to be the Emperor's assassins with Lord Kurze as the Emperor's Master Assassin and or the Master of Assassins. No Empire is sustained by timidity, sometimes blood must flow, like a small brook or as a raging river, either way blood will flow when the Emperor issues the Night Lords forth. As a Loyal Night Lord, I go forth in Midnight Clad, for the Emperor of Mankind!!!!
I feel like the Emperor's original intention with the Night Lords was, as you say, a tool to use when he needed to send a very strong message. However, I also think they were to be restrained and have more of a sense of justice instead of being the unleashed and uncontrollable monsters they became
@@MrFredstt
They were and they did, at first but as time went by, the Legion changed. The recruits were no longer the best and brightest but were the worst of the worst.
This is my favorite legion for many reason, but I guess it's mostly because they're really tragic in a way.
The 8th Legion truly never stood a chance, their Primarch tortured with an ability to ONLY see the worst possible ending for himself which is his death by his father was slowly being driven insane with the idea he lacked an autonomy. His brothers despised him his planet despised him, but his Legion despite their scruples hung on and tried to remain loyal to the imperium. A legion that was the dredges of their society even before their Primarch's home planet started sending them nothing but rapist and murders exclusively they were first and foremost murders who was using their trade to do something they assumed was for the greater good.
Listening to the audiobooks for this legion its just so sad because I genuinely can't really see an ending where they wouldn't remain what they are in the current setting.
Well, there’s a possibility. If Decimus were to live up to Talos’ morals and/or Variel’s, there could be a chance where they would be something greater. I’m looking forward to being up a character that would pull a batshit insane move.
Amazing as always. The Night Lords are the best legion ever. They are the absolute darkness that even chaos fears.
ADB fleshed out this legion so well. He deserves props for all the work he did to realise their lore so vividly. Cheers for the vid.
They have the coolest armour design in my opinion
✋😌👌
That they do. That they do.
Finally
the sons of the night
The loyal servants of Emperor 🤡
They are justice
they are judgment
they are punishment
I love just how much of chads they are, giving the opportunity to fall into chaos at anytime, but not wanting to.
“Please accept the gift of the Dark Gods”

Great video as always! Thank you Remembrancer!
Sons of our Father, stand in midnight clad. We bring the night!
Konrad was just unlucky destroying his planet only source of wealth. And living in the darkness means he never saw the light. Tzeench might have influenced the heck out of Konrads visions leading them towards chaos.
A Interaction for the Interaction God, a Comment for the Comment Throne, for the Almighty Algorithm
Omnissiah be praised! But wait... Isn't the Algorithm a form of Abominable Intelligence...?
Nice one 😁
What’s makes the knight lords interesting from the other traitor legions was they were not groomed to fall from the start.
The death guard emperors children world eaters and 1000 sons were pushed prodded and influenced by the chaos gods into become theirs.
In the context of the great game the Knight lords are the eternal wild card not really factoring a place in the plans of the chaos gods.
We stand In Midnight Clad!
Most underated aspect of the Night Lords is how many of them view chaos and those corrupted by it:
"“Prey,” Uzas said. The others heard his voice thick with saliva. He was drooling into his helm. “Prey.”
“Be silent, freak,” said Xarl. " - NL novel, Soul Hunter
Always a pleasure listening to your tales Remembrancer. Thank you.
The 8th and 18th are my Favorite Legions. ❤
Always amazing quality
Another great transmission 🍻
The Night Lords are by far my favourite legion, Remembrancer you have done them a great service with video.
Ave Dominus Nox, Brothers!
Let's fucking gooooooo I am really excited
Amazing Vid! Night Lords lore it so awesome.
I wanna specialize in “massacres”, I mean really just want the job title “massacre specialist”
Another great video
What makes them my second favorite Legion is how defiant they are. The Night Lords reject Chaos and the will of the Emperor. They did what was told of them and yet they were punished for it. Don’t get me wrong the 8th where filled with degenerates which caused them to go down further, but I think that’s what makes them likable they could be made into great villains, and or bogeyman. Ave Dominus Nox
26 minutes for us what a blessing
I find it slightly amusing but ironic that words like discipline, Doctrine, disciple, tactics, communication, and of course TRUSTED - appear in this video. It's Great storytelling; I'm not sure if that was intentional or not but that kind of language in itself as it is attached to the 8th Legion just shines a Glaring Light on the hellish atmosphere of 40k. To think your planet will receive reinforcements, only for it to be 8th Legion who may or may not kill you anyway out amusement, the evasion of punishment or simply just to make a example of you to reinforce compliance, is insane.
"The nightlords were murderer, first and foremost. It is all the hae ever known."
Really puts into view the kind of evils the Imperium is/was willing to go to justify turning worlds into compliance and continuing "The Great Game" (as the Emperor and Malcador call it).
Wouldnt that be terrible
"Legion reinforcements have arrived"
Then its the night lords... they skin you alive ans crucify you.... for the lolz.
"Lord of the Night" was the first novel I read. My then wife bought it for me new back when there were only a small number 40K novels in print. So badass. I have always loved the Nightlords.
My headcanon is that they fell to malal. Explains why they resist the other powers and why everything they do is out of spite
These guys sound and look great. How bad is the lightning bolt painting ? The new Night Lords kill team seems like an auto-buy and paint. Hopefully some cool transfers included
Seem like a pretty chill group of dudes tbh
To my knowledge, there have been a couple of times in wich a some nightlords, have become daemon princes. They are vey few, but some of them have done so.
Krieg Acerbus would be one, the only one I can recall by name right now.
Gendor Skraivok
Awesome
So I’m imagining an entire legion of directionless, unhinged & unleashed BAT-MEN…oh hell NO!
WE HAVE COME FOR YOU!!!
Ave Dominus Nox
We are the justice in the dark! We bring fear into the hearts of men and xeno alike! We bring the night! AVE DOMINUS NOX!
The Night Lords really stand out among the Traitor / Chaos Astartes. They were arguably the most brutal and vicious before any legions turned on humanity, but like the Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors they didn't dive into slavery to Chaos, either as a chosen of one god or to them all. So while they were the most evil beforehand, and despite being made up of murderous bastards, they're quite far from the worst of it.
Our gene father Corvus Corax, was the only individual to my knowledge who put unease and dare i say fear in the callous heart of the night haunter.
STOMP STOMP... Click of flamer igniting.....
He didnt fear Corvus, Primarchs dont fear each other (theres father îs another thing) ...its more discontempt he felt for him cuz both were alike even in appearence but its easy to see that Corvus didnt give into the darkness were as Konrad did, thats also what is in Corvus mind If Something went bad he could end up and be like Curze
@@bodricthered haha good one brother, your primarch did give curze a rather brutal beating.
@@lilpretzel5629 I see. Thank you for giving me more knowledge on the matter.
@@lilpretzel5629 If anything Corvus "Feared" Curze.
He wondered to himself why he ran from Curze at Istvaan.
But you're right, he wasnt afraid of Curze.
He was afraid that HE COULD HAVE been Curze
Why didnt Konrad just leave 100 night lords To nostramo To serve as discount night haunters?
That would have kept The planet in line and obedient.
The hall to his chamber on Seguelsa was made of living people stitched together...walls, floors and ceiling. Crunching bones as he walked one last time he thanked them for their music.-kurze
The painted count is my favorite night lord, he took what he wanted and is immortal so things worked out for him.
Absolutely brutal...
We all stand in midnight clad, alongside our Prophet of the 8th Legion. We await for the fortune you have swayed us into. In order to bring the Imperium what it derserves.
Deserves**
Hail to Decimus he will return the 8th to glory
what i see is that the 8th have always high quality weapons.beautiful crafted chain and powerswords and bolters.high end mele weapons and ships.1a maintained....i love their crazy setting..always ready.roam the galaxy as depraved warbands.hahaha...like;yeah give me 1000slave girls and 10 tonnes of space coke for our 10 man crew and we rip that imperial outpost ...no prob.hahaha .and we leave a nice show behind that even some dark eldar jerk off on it.
Night lords and Curze became some of my favorites very quickly.
They occupy an extreme niche in the legions and imperium... Especially during the great crusade and the following horus heresy.
The night lords are designed for terror warfare, they can use the most ruthless methods to bring worlds to heel, saving more life than spending them, using extreme pain as payment.
Morally speaking, it is wrong on all accounts, because killing your enemies is more of a mercy than torturing some, even some that may be innocent...It would be fair to kill as fast as possible, all those that need to die than it is to torture many that are more or less innocent. BUT, in the great crusade, it is useful. Its been useful in real history... Dracula, besieged by the turks, managed to save his lands on several occassions using great scare tactics... Poisoning his own water supplies and raiding his own villages and eventually impalement... Turkish men became so scared of what they saw they retreated out of fear of dying horribly... Other Primarchs looked down upon the nighlord methods, especially Dorn, whom even argued with Curze and nearly got killed by the night haunter. BUT, in essence, ALL astartes are scary to humans, especially when they come to conquer your world to force you into the embrace of the Imperium. Imperial fists would have considered just as monstrous as daemons, nightlords, orks, by those that were opposed by the imperial fists, or ANY and ALL space marine legions and now chapters... And this is where Curze is THE MOST HONEST about the objective truth of reality and humanity. He and the nightlords are as all space marines and primarchs are to the core. Super human weapons of utter terrible power... Many worlds being conquered by the legions would call them all monsters... When the Luna wolves crack open fortresses and purge planets of resistance, those that stood in their way would have been as afraid as they would have been of curze. When Horus was nearly slain, the Luna wolves carried Horus back to their flagship, whilst onboard their flagship, the spacemarines, the most noble of them all, carrying Horus, crushed, wounded and even killed so many of the humans onboard their flagship, pushing them aside and walking over them without regard to their life. Space marines are often so high and noble, extreme, hard, some are more heroic than others, but like Gavriel Loken discovered for himself, they are nothing but barbarians.
- I do not yet know all the lore, but it seems strange to me that, even after the death of Konrad Curze, the nightlords would remain enemy to the Imperium and truly became that which they deplored. They become mercenaries and torturers of people... Curze, let himself die because he saw the irony of being what he was...The entire purpose of the Nighthaunter was to punish the guilty so cruelly that you create paradise through fear...Even if the crime was insignificant, That is the Nighthaunter's identity to make an entire planet submit through fear of the consequences...Terror was a means to a great end, a great goal to save all of humanity. That was the purpose of the emperor, to save all of mankind and Konrad holds DNA from the Emperor, so those characteristics, ideals, truths, believes, ruthlessness and being terror incarnate is within the Emperor of mankind... It has always been within mankind...It would seem more logical to me that the nighlords would have gone completely isolated, not aligned with anyone, because that position is more in line with being the judges and punishers over what they survey. I understand during the heresy, Konrad aligned with Horus but Konrad had his own reasons for doing that, He found little aid from the loyal primarchs, he felt betrayed by Fulgrim to whom he entrusted his visions of the future. And when he was called back to terra he felt that they were trying to bring down his legion, at the same time which, Nostrama, without the nighthaunter and nightlords to rule them, returned to lawlessness, for which it was destroyed by Konrad. It was justice even though billions died... At which point, Konrad had already chosen to resist the emperor's orders because he questioned the emperor for his actions... Unlike Horus who saw a future wherein the emperor is worshipped like a god and he himself was written out of history. You might say the nightlords are black and white, but they are more like twilight, They corolate between the good and evil and accept the darkness of the truth, And that for their to be an Imperium ruled galaxy, humanity must suffer and be beaten into submission. "All empires are forged through blood. " Konrad Curze when he argued his case against Dorn after the nightlords and Imperial fists conquered a planet together.

I have yet to finish Prospero Burn, however why Curze didn't put Astartes(just like Lion did with Luther) in Nostromo to enforce his justice? I didn't end well for Luther and Lion, but at least his recruits didn't were accepted by the Lion and the Legion (at least before the Daemon and Cypher incident)

Night lords via better discipline

Id say depends on when and who.
Some of the Nostramun Legionaires where juat sick killers
Some of the Terran Night lords were unbelievably proffesional.
Before the the crusade against the Lion?
Night Lords, hands down
After Curzes capture, when the legion went to shit with internal power struggles and backstabbing.
Probably Ravens
There is no possible "fair" match between them, but the night Lords have a very weak record against other space Marines. Their terror tactics are useless. RG have a significant advantage with superior stealth and force cohesion.

I like the night lords but how does one man really subdue an entire planet can he teleport instantly to every city on the planet? is Kurze the Santa Claus of death, even batman limited to one city Gotham , Kurze must move faster than a speeding bullet.
if you lived in that planet, would you even risk testing that out?
@@kwazooplayingguardsman5615
Yeah because the odds of him visiting you would be 1 in a few billion, you'd have more chance of winning the lottery.
Now to me if the story had been one post super human had started in one city sat the size of London or something and he started a vigilante justice group (death squads) and this group popped up eventually in every city spreading across the planet following Kurze grusume example, this to me would be more believable.
Mistake to name your home planet "Holy Terror"
Ty for reading to me
I fucking guarantee you in konrads death crown, one of those 3 jews act like a soulstone of some kind and he's gonna at some point or another fix his mind, find big E, and become a kind of secret agent primarch before then proceeding to bring his boys back to the imperium with far more mental stability.
It would be a great night when that happened ... though not perhaps for the Imperium ...

Night Lords: Exist
Curze: "And I took that personally."
Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!
Thank you for this
If the Night Lords were so unhinged, who would trust them to put down rebellious legions? Always seemed like a bit of an unexplainable plot hole. Well, not unless the VIII was going in first and alone as cannon fodder.
They volunteered to "assist" ferrus, and the gorgon being an absolute hotheaded individual agreed to it. He really wants to clap fulgrim's ass so desperately that he is willing to get whatever help he can to accomplish it.
*cries acid in VIII*
I really start to question the quality of these videos now, the last 5 minutes include at least two points of repeating himself, mentioning how they abhor chaos, and scavange from loyalist legions. It strikes me as either reading off a pre-scripted page, like a wikia, or a poorly editted script. The latter would at least be reasonable, the former make this little better than a luetin video.
they should have been called Day Lords when they were loyal
I want it to be noted: it was never technically declared that the assassin killed Conrad curze. But merely implied. The way the story goes it's almost like the writers wanted that to be open-ended and left to interpretation whether he was assassinated or he faked his own death and survived to escape, to, disappear?.
Lot of primarks that survive tend to disappear. On top which they never found Conrad curze body.
in the night lord's trilogy it describes the assassin holding konrad's severed head. he's dead bro

You know what’s really cool? There is a way to survive service along side them in 30k... if Kurze likes/trusts you enough then he gives you a Nostramon coin. That’s your “if you kill me.
