A (very) brief history of Quakers

  • Many people seem to get Quakers confused with Amish or Shakers or even Mormons, so the Young Friends of Richmond VA decided to make a video to help clear things up a little bit. This is all about Quaker history (which actually has very little to do with Amish and Shaker and Mormon history).
Originally the video was going to be called "What is Quakerism," but that turned out to be way too big of a project, at least for now. I worked with the Young Friends on this video for six months or so, studying some important moments in Quaker history and generally having a good time.
Our "animation" style was inspired by an epipheo video with Tim Ferriss, and we also would like to thank Jon Watts for being the patron saint of quaker youtube videos. Music by Kelly Kennedy and others. Barb Adams, the clerk of Religious Education at Richmond Friends Meeting, drew everyone together to make this happen.

Nice video. I just found out that my great-grandfather (x6 or so) was friends with George Fox and donated land for the Third Haven Meeting House in downtown Easton in 1682.

Thanks for this! Very well done! Great animation style! Just one correction: Quakers aren't so much into "everyone doing their own thing," without leaders, but more about listening for the authority that flows from the Spirit, and letting that authority lead us, as a community. Can't wait to see what aspect of Friends' faith, practice, or history your next video focuses on! Blessings!

One notable correction: the four "Boston martyrs" were hanged, not burnt at the stake.
With the possible exception of some actions taken by the state governments of Missouri and maybe Illinois against the early Mormons, the Boston martyrdoms represent the only time in American history when people were put to death by an American government solely on account of their religious affiliation.

THANKSGIVING THOUGHT VII: DICK’S QUAKER HERITAGE
I’m still on my Thanksgiving high. My initial TG FaceBook rant of yesterday, was largely inspired by Sunday dinners in the farm house of my Quaker grandparent’s (mama’s side). But I knew essentially nothing about Quaker’s except that they had no preacher, no sermons (members of the congregation just spoke when the spirit moved them), and no baptism. So while Googling a pop song about Quakers from before my day, I ran across this nice little piece; and now I’m an expert. It’s worth checking out.

The appeal of the Quaker philosophy is limited by the ingrained ignorance of most human beings, particularly those who are besotted by the shiny trinkets of mindless materialism. Being a Quaker asks a person to be an exceptional human being, allowing the Light of God to dwell in the most serene stillness of one's heart.

    • @johnnydtractive
      @johnnydtractive 5 лет назад +6

You refer to people you've never met and don't even know, using words like "mindless" "ignorance" and "besotted by shiny trinkets". While referring to yourself and your friends as "'exceptional human beings".
Perhaps there would be value for you in focussing a little more on the Quaker values of HUMILITY and EQUALITY. Unfortunately it appears Quakerism hasn't helped you manage your ego.

Aw, this is great! I'm just learning about my Quaker heritage (John & Lofty Sotcher) and I'm considering going to a meeting although I'm an atheist (considered myself a compassionate pragmatist). I'm a little torn since I've always had disdain for organized religion due to rampant hypocrisy, so I'm not sure if I am the kind of Friend that is required. I'd love feedback. Thanks, sweet people!

My opinion: if you listen to that "still, small voice" and simply let go of everything else in your mind, you are practicing the heart of Quakerism. Go to a meeting and listen. All else flows from that. Just listen. When you truly listen you will act from that "inner light" - which is love. You may start to get the sense that your eyes are not merely windows to the soul, but windows through which "god" looks OUT unto the world...because he's inside you.

+RodCornholio I remember provoking a fight with a Quaker at 10 or 12 years old the fight was over in less than 30 seconds I was thrown on the ground with my hands stretched out and he said are you going to quit or are you going to try and keep starting a fight in that position I know he could have hit me hard but he didn't I just said no I won't fight anymore. He let me up and it was over. that really impressed me I found out later he was a Quaker. that's been my impression of a Quaker all of my life. so I guess putting your enemy on their back and using some restraint is Peaceable.

      From Quaker Faith and Practice:
Even if it were possible to be a member of every church at once, there would still be incompleteness; the infinite fullness of God will always exceed our powers of understanding and obedience, even our powers to receive vision and joy. Dual membership for me is not a formula whereby I may find satisfaction because to be both a Friend and a United Reformed Church minister has all the gaps of one tradition filled by the other, though it is certainly a practice in which there is a great and satisfying measure of complementarity. Membership is rather a commitment, and membership of the People of God is a total commitment. But it is a fact of this earthly life that the total claim of God must be expressed in the actual and limited claim of those people with whom in fact life is shared. It has been my tremendous privilege and joy to find myself so committed in two communities, receiving from each more than I could well express and believing I am called to give in each whatever God enables.
      Dorothy Havergal Shaw, 1994

Quakers originally left England for the New World with a missionary agenda. They had suffered some persecution (no more than other radical religious groups of the time!) By 1660 there were more than 20,000 Quaker converts in England so they were still going strong. The only reason they achieved this when other groups such as the Diggers, Levellers etc.. lost support was because of their evangelical approach and missionary work.

    Accepting “Family” as the 10th.Testimony
The Quaker testimonies of Equality and Justice have failed in the family. Fathers and children are at a disadvantage with many having been lost to each other. 45% of UK school age children do not now live under the same roof as their father.
Quakers and their testimonies constitute a feminist/woke institution that does not accept this as being a problem, never addressing it. It is more likely to do so if “Family” is accepted as a Testimony on the understanding that children’s natural maturation process has 3 essential stages of need.
    A. The unconditional love of the mother from birth until about 7 years of age.
    The mother must have “thefinalsay”
    B. The conditional love of the father, who takes his children out into the world, gives security and teaching social boundaries from 7 until about 13 years of age.
    The father must have “thefinalsay”.
C.The friendship and respect of their peers from 13 until 18 years of age.
    The child must have “thefinalsay”.
If these 3 stages are not sequence in order, maturation is unlikely to be achieved and mental resilience reduced. This has now become generational.
Such a regime of equal and just parenting rights (over time) would bind parents into a co-operative relationship, because (over time) each will hold the power of “thefinalsay” sequentially when it is needed and best favoured to use it.
Such family protocols need to be the default position, (allowing love, courtesy and humour to prevail) but could in exceptional cases be varied by the courts.
    Buckminster Fuller said:-
“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete”.
To alleviate suffering is worthy. To prevent it is divine, but thankless.
