  • I decided to use an old car radio I had laying around to put in my shed to have music out in my shed and my back yard. I use a 12 volt battery to have constant power which will keep the programmed pre-set stations recorded and also allow the radio to work when there is no power in an emergency. I use the battery, and battery charger with the car sterio and some used speakers I purchased at a 2nd hand store for cheap to make a DIY surround sound radio in my shed. This can be done in your home, garage, shed, or cabin too. A battery could also be charged with a solar panel if you don't have access to power where you want the radio to be.

From looking briefly at this video at some parts, all I can say is I hope you have good fire insurance.

The radio still works. I have a switch to turn off the power so it will not overheat when not in use but I used it today and still going strong. Love having a good radio in my shed.

Never connect a switch to any high current DC or AC ground, the switch should always be connected to the "hot" wire, otherwise there is always a potential for a fire or electric shock permanently as youre not actually switching off the power at all only the ground, this is especially dangerous in home AC circuits, it can even kill you. A cars electrical ignition system can generate more power than inside a large CRT television

Can I clarify, you have your switch on the negative and you seem to have shorted out the speaker wires that you aren't using. Have I got that right?

From what I could guess is that you used the switch to interrupt the current in the power wire when u should use the ground to interrupt the current with the switch, at least it’s how he did it in the video

I'm not exactly an expert on wiring up the radio but I was able to get it to work--this was a while ago. I just did my best to figure this one out. I have since moved and no longer have the shed with the radio.

The wiring harness? (Which is just a bunch of wires with a connector that plugs into the back of my radio. I purchased a wiring harness that is specific to this radio and also an FM antenna that also plugs into the back of the radio. If you look up a wiring harness for the car stereo you have it makes this process much easier.

I purchased the wiring harness on Amazon.com they are radio specific so first you need to know which radio you will be using then you need to search for a wiring harness that is compatible with that specific radio. After doing this project I realized that it would be far easier to just buy a radio that has programmable preset stations. I do like the car radio and I had one laying around anyway so it was a fun project to try. Something like this would be easier to use and set up unless you already have a radio to use: www.amazon.com/Sangean-RCR-5-Digital-Clock-Radio/dp/B0016CWV3U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508991466&sr=8-1&keywords=radio+with+presets
