It’s one of the biggest issues I always had with metal. Metal houses some of the world’s finest guitarists, but I can really only appreciate them in clean tone/minor distortion. That over the top distortion most metal bands have just takes away all the beauty for me. It’s just a garbled mess of notes at that point, but in clean tone they shine!

I wouldn't classify what he's doing as innovative in terms of jazz. The first thing most jazz musicians do is learn the pentatonic scale which comprises the bulk of his solo.
When there are so many interesting new ways to play outside of what you'd expect, and even new ways to play tastier and more "in", I don't think that this is the direction for jazz to go towards.
If you listen to jazz guitarists like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gilad Hekselman, Peter Bernstein, Pat Martino (RIP) etc. you'll hear the many different corners of innovation and experimentation.
No hate to this video or this comment, but jazz is going in so many interesting directions and to say that it needs to sound more like this video, a metalhead not really trying to play the jazz language... I don't agree.
Elevator music comes from dumbing down generations and generations of musical innovations into something empty enough to be ignored. Even if you were to play the "status quo" of jazz, if you really did your homework, it wouldn't be elevator music, and even if it was it would be so beautiful and interesting that it would be too distracting for an elevator.
Check out those guitarists I shared and let me know what you think!
