Tears came into my eyes as I watch one of the most iconic Black show that I watched continuously in the 80’s. The Evan’s Family felt like a lot of our family especially growing up Black in America . I remember when James Evan’s died , I really thought he died . That episode always gave me chills. I never understood the mom’s disappearance for a while .But it all makes sense now. Rip to Esther Rolle , Rip Ja’net Dubois and Rip to John Amos . True Iconic legends .
Despite the deceptive title, this was rather informative. I recall when John Amos' character was written off the show. I was a kid and at the time, I thought he'd actually passed away. Of course, later on I realized the facts. I always thought Thelma and Wenona were very attractive. Esther Rolle was an outstanding actress and the show was iconic. Very good to know some of what truly contributed to its place in television history.
They forgot to mention how Ja’Net DuBois (Willona) reprised her role as “Penny’s mother” by playing Janet Jackson mother in her music video for the song “Control.” The narrative also failed to mention that she sang the theme song for the television show, “The Jeffersons.”
To think they initially wanted Florida to be a single black mom of three, but she put her foot down and they gave her a husband.A strong male figure was never apart of the equation so of course they would find a way to fire John. They wanted Florida to be a statistic but Miss Ester Rolle was too educated, smart and intelligent to let that be another representation of our community. We can do more than that even if we have to fight our way thru the obstacles.Good Times epitomizes our struggles, our fight, and our courage to become successful despite the odds.

"Amos found out he wasn't as crucial to the show" . Just demonstrates how THEM folks can witness the same thing and have a totally different perspective from Black people.
That's how it usually is when your employee, the boss and management see you as just a number, however unfortunately for them, they realized that John Amos wasn't just a number lol.
I loved this show, I was only about 10 when it was on. I'm a white man and never gave thought about the message it was sending back then, I just loved the family ,can't a show be for everyone and just be good times, plus it was the fist time I saw Janet..instant smitten , have a great day all
I'm glad you make this video sir, i was born in the early 1960's, behind Ralph Carter, i loved the way , the late Mrs Rolle, and the late Mr Amos, played they're parts,, like real back then parents, and i liked B Stanis and R Carter, back then, i couldn't even do 1/4 of the clownish stuff jj did, with my deceased older sister and big brother, let alone, my parents, for JJ to be the older brother, he sure was foolish, always trying to be funny, or say something stupid, and Ms Rolle and Mr Amos, was really trying to film, how parents, really raised they're children back then, they wasn't for the foolish stuff, JJ was doing.
Back in the 70s my father was James going from job to job trying to keep our head above water my mom was Florida staying home cooking and keeping us straight I was JJ the oldest an inspired artist and goofy my sister was Thelma the middle child and my brother the youngest a real life Good Times family growing up in the hood in 1970s Jacksonville Florida The cast and show may have went through a lot but the experience was way more significant than you could imagine along with Sanford and Son Whats Happening and the Jeffersons
They are racist because they think Black ppl look alike. They might be named alike in this case but they do not look alike. I bet Robertson was 6 6" and Robinson was 5 10".
John Amos as the father was one of the best things about the show. When he was no longer on the show, it was so different, as if he had died for real. He was greatly missed. Norman Lear allowed his racism to ruin the whole vibe of the show by firing John Amos. John and Esther were right about JJ, he was so Stepin Fetchit like, not what blacks wanted to see in those times/that era of being proud of being black. Although he was funny, it was embarrassing and, seemed he didn’t really fit in with such a proud, dignified family. It was also irritating that they never left the projects, never could get ahead no matter how hard they tried. Obviously, racism played a big part, just didn’t want positive black role models who were striving and thriving, only striving. It really makes me angry.
There wasn’t any one scene that caused the show to end. After the dismissal of John Amos, it made the audience feel like they were blindsided. After that It just ran its natural course like all other sitcoms that realize the story lines were not compelling or interesting enough to continue. It happens to all sitcoms wether they are good or bad.
This show was such a major staple in our home as a youth, it touched on soooooo many social, economic and political issues that plagued the African American communities. No subject was untouched or at least addressed. Thank God for re-runs.
I think it was said that in the beginning, they didn't want a father figure in the household. They wanted it to be just Florida raising her three children in the projects on her own . I heard Esther Rolle insisted on having a two parent household. So John Amos kept the role of her husband. Whom had a few cameos as her husband when she played the maid on Maude.
Best sitcom EVER. I LOVED Good Times so much and related to every single character. When James left, it was never the same. He made it special. Norman Lear and anyone else who couldn't see how relevant James was on the show is a fool.
💡Please stop telling lies in your titles, just tell the truth and we'll watch because the content is good😔 Like if you titled this video as "What caused Good Times to be cancelled", that would have been great because it would've matched the video and we wouldn't be looking for a non-existent LIE!😩
Good research but you never probably even watch this show.. Dynimite??? JJ phrase was DY-NO-MITE!!! And that thumbnail clickbait wasn't cool either. Please leave Black American Culture alone. You guys always mispronouncing "Names" and "Phrases". So you can get views👎🏽 And Thelma never came out in a bra ( It's Photoshop) total disrespect!! In that scene not only did she have a dress on she also was wearing a coat because they was getting ready to go out. The young women back then had class unlike the young women of today.
Exactly, well said, nowadays if I click something .. which isn't regularly, soon as I hear the voice of another person FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY I immediately disengage, click bait at it's finest 😡
Just as they have always done to our families in fact or fiction. No one is surprised at how our enemies feel about us unless you forget how your enemies feel about you.
@KSU-ce2uc LOL. Showed a pic of Robertson the basketball player. Her husband's name was Oscar Robinson- not the basketball player. You're right! I was shocked for a reason, lol.
John Amos was absolutely right. The writers wanted to emphasize Jimmy Walker's character, but not as a real person with artistic talent, which they actually did for a short time. They reduced him to a wisecracking stereotype spouting one-liners and a corny catchphrase. They completely ignored the aspirations of the other two siblings, Michael and Thelma. This type of negative portrayal of Black characters is exactly why writer-directors like Robert Townsend, Rusty Cundieff, Keenan Ivory Wayans, and Spike Lee have created films on this very subject. The mainstream media, from television to the big screen, has a powerful influence on how people view themselves and their real-life roles in society.
20:44 Thelma's hairstyle (baby hair) is hot and that's the same hairstyle the young ladies are wearing today, style and fashion comes back around 😎 nothing new 🤔🤔
They wanted to make it look like BP are unkempt but Black people, esp FBAs are very clean and fastidious about their hygiene. Most bathe 2x a day. europeans, well history says otherwise.
When we were kids, 'Good Times' and 'Happy Days' were must-see TV shows. Certain nights were associated with certain shows, and 'Good Times' was associated with a certain day of the week. My mom, dad, sister, brother, and I would watch 'Good Times' together for the 1st 2 seasons. My father noticed I paid more attention to the show when Thelma appeared. I loved Thelma.

I think everyone that is over 40 knows that
@@rhlymous I had no idea Maude and Edith from All in the family were cousins...wow
the 1970's Good time was the bench mark for every Black Show to Come!!!
BENCHMARK, not BEACH 🏖️ MARK. Also note: it’s a compound word
I had a crush on James Evans, and he is still a handsome man!
Child l thought it was just me! That man was FINE!🤌🏽
I remember having a crush on Penny as a little kid 😂
THE ONLY PROBLEM THEY HAS WITH MR. AMOS WAS NO PROBLEM AT ALL, THEY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TRUTH HE WAS SPEAKING ON EVERY LEVEL!!
OMG Thelma was F I N E and John Amos was Soooo Good. May he RIP. oNe LovE from NYC
People will give their videos any kind of crazy title to get us to click onto them.
She was truly surprised when she won that award👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Good times was the best picture on tv,black picture of all times, phenomenal ❤
"Amos found out he wasn't as crucial to the show" . Just demonstrates how THEM folks can witness the same thing and have a totally different perspective from Black people.
That's how it usually is when your employee, the boss and management see you as just a number, however unfortunately for them, they realized that John Amos wasn't just a number lol.
I loved this show, I was only about 10 when it was on. I'm a white man and never gave thought about the message it was sending back then, I just loved the family ,can't a show be for everyone and just be good times, plus it was the fist time I saw Janet..instant smitten , have a great day all
Thank you for this!
So did I miss which scene ended the show immediately? It seems that they simply decided to cancel the show and tied up loose ends with a final show.
John Amos was an "uppity" negro who told massa how to run the show.
NO, you missed nothing. Clickbait title. Everyone should expect it by now. Expect the norm. Be surprised by the exception.
They lost a lot of ratings after John Amos was let go...the show just wasn't the same anymore...
What did Norman Lear know about Black Families? He should've stuck with All In the Family, Maude.
@@SouthSideLadyWright I totally agree with you on that.
Back in the 70s my father was James going from job to job trying to keep our head above water my mom was Florida staying home cooking and keeping us straight I was JJ the oldest an inspired artist and goofy my sister was Thelma the middle child and my brother the youngest a real life Good Times family growing up in the hood in 1970s Jacksonville Florida
The cast and show may have went through a lot but the experience was way more significant than you could imagine along with Sanford and Son Whats Happening and the Jeffersons
Duvvvvallll
Amos passed away and this was just uploaded 4 days ago
Thank you for this history.♥
Y'all gotta stop using AI to voice these videos. How you gonna mess up one of the most famous catchphrases, Dyn-o-mite! @14:06
Den-o-mite😂
They gon' end up erasing history with that Artificial Intelligence.
They (correctly) said Esther Rolle's real-life husband was Oscar Robinson. But they showed a picture of NBA legend Oscar Robertson. 🤡
They are racist because they think Black ppl look alike. They might be named alike in this case but they do not look alike. I bet Robertson was 6 6" and Robinson was 5 10".
Thanks for the clarification, I was scratching my head...
The character Thelma NEVER dressed like that in the photo displayed she was always classy ..You tube needs to have BOUNDARIES .PERIOD!!!!!!!
That is right 👍🏾
John Amos as the father was one of the best things about the show.
What was the scene?
I think it was said that in the beginning, they didn't want a father figure in the household. They wanted it to be just Florida raising her three children in the projects on her own . I heard Esther Rolle insisted on having a two parent household. So John Amos kept the role of her husband. Whom had a few cameos as her husband when she played the maid on Maude.
They said he wasn't necessary. Wrong. His presence as an actor and as black male role figure was essential.
This show and the beautiful people who starred in it will never be forgotten!
Did you really say that Janet Jackson’s recent career has really taken off? 😂
Absolutely well said
So why did this show end again??? This is why I fast fwd these types of vids.
My favorite show. You can tell by my avatar. Chitown 1luv. 💯💙🙏🏼✊🏿
BJ ❤❤❤
Good times, The Jeffersons, All in the Family, Threes Company and Sanford & Son were the best.
I’m not going to watch this because the first 2 minutes doesn’t seem to be going anywhere 😂😂😂
Who posted this, it was still going strong after that episode. Also Thelma didn't even have that outfit on during that specific episode.
Exactly!
Excellent breakdown of the Show
Good research but you never probably even watch this show..
@@davidbarnes3864 that is a robot voice. AI generated.
Just as they have always done to our families in fact or fiction. No one is surprised at how our enemies feel about us unless you forget how your enemies feel about you.
Damn, I didn't know Esther Rolle was married to Oscar Robinson! Wow.
That's a lie. She was never married to Oscar Robertson, the NBA basketball player.
@KSU-ce2uc LOL. Showed a pic of Robertson the basketball player. Her husband's name was Oscar Robinson- not the basketball player. You're right! I was shocked for a reason, lol.
Me either
Wow i didn't know that either. Glad they pointed that out.
I loved Good Times! Was one of my faves! I think I saw every episode.
Why does the thumbnail have Thelma in a bra/bikini top? That never happened in that episode or the show?? Not cool!!
Thank you.
If you're here for the "Infamous scene".......Its not in this video.
Only thing Infamous about this video is the "Title"
You're Welcome
Title is a bait and switch.🤨
These were real black people back then
I loved this show and remember watching it in the 70's, watched the reruns too❤
James Evans Raise me !!!!!!❤❤❤
I love how you failed to show the scene used as click bait in the title. Totally unnecessary. The video is great. No need to lie to people
They took good times off the Air because of the ratings period
Liked and Subscribed (ALL)
20:44 Thelma's hairstyle (baby hair) is hot and that's the same hairstyle the young ladies are wearing today, style and fashion comes back around 😎 nothing new 🤔🤔
In my honest opinion. The 2 strongest black family shoes were "Good Times" and "The Cosby Show". Regardless of all the offset scandals.
They always show the dirty refrigerator I never could understand that
They wanted to make it look like BP are unkempt but Black people, esp FBAs are very clean and fastidious about their hygiene. Most bathe 2x a day. europeans, well history says otherwise.
THANK YOU, John Amos, Esther Rolle, Ja'Net Dubois, and Johnny Brown!!!
Why they got Thelma in a bra for the thumbnail?!!!
What was the scene that made them cancel the show?
They can take it off the air but they can't take it away from our hearts and minds
It showed that black Jesus and that wasnt supposed too happen
That's what I think happened
That had nothing to do with it. It wasnt even jesus it was ned the wine-o. They just wanted to keep it dumbed down.
I absolutely loved this show!
@@keep.it.moving77 And that THEME SONG!!! so cool it was probably a lot of white americas first exposure to that wonderful southern baptist choir sound ... nothing like it
This scene transpired in 75/76 and Good Times was on the air until 1979 ... Just stop with the bullshit!!!
Hey Wussup With The Anger , it’s Nothing to Fight Over……Wow , Folks need to Learn to Control There Emotions

Never watched a single episode after John Amos left. He was such an important character and it was never the same when he left
