    Thanks For an excellent video, I just subscribed.
    My wife and I were in Arequipa a year ago, I really liked it. Super interesting architecture, interesting terrain, and good food. One significant drawback that seem to bother my wife more than myself was that the pollution from cars in some of those areas with a lot of traffic in two or three story buildings lining both sides of narrow streets. I felt safer here than I did in the majority of Lima, and I feel like there’s still a lot for us to see here still.
    My wife being raised in Peru is a native Spanish speaker, and I do well enough that we are definitely looking for a retirement home outside of the US. We are strongly considering Mexico, but with Peru being her native country it makes the residency a whole lot easier.

    Just a word of advice for anyone interested in Arequipa and any Latin American city in general, try your best to pay what locals are paying for real estate so as not to play a part in making the area gringo priced which could lead to leaving the locals priced out of their own neighborhood and that would create a resentment that could very well lead to a rise in violence towards foreigners as has been the case in Vilcabamba Ecuador, parts of Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, etc..

    Arriving in Lima on September 28th. How you spend 14 days in Peru? Thinking of spending most of the time in Arequipa and in Sacred Valley. Have you done any white water rafting around Sacred Valley? Also thing of using the Peru Bus service to get on and off.

      Hey Ram! Glad to hear you're visiting Peru!
      As to how to spend your time here, it depends on what you like. The Sacred Valley is gorgeous and has plenty of things to do, and Arequipa is a pretty city (Arequipa also has water rafting). While we've never done water rafting, we've heard that it's pretty fun!
      If you like hiking, you should definitely go north around Trujillo!
      If you like cities, definitely check out Lima - tons of museums and activities to do in the city.
      Enjoy!!!

    Are you still in Arequipa 5 years later ?
    We retired 4 months ago at 55 and 60, and are traveling between Mexico and Argentina for several years in search of our favorite cool weather retirement city. Arequipa seems to check lots of boxes. We don’t have to but would like to stay under $2000/month for our budget, which seems pretty easy in all of the places we are going. We are currently in my wife’s home country of Nicaragua and spending about $1100/month.

      @@therehastobesomethingmoore - We are definitely still enjoying AQP, and we wouldn't change a thing!
      There are always downsides. For us, some differences in bureaucracy can be frustrating (like when renewing our residency), but this has actually improved dramatically in the time that we've been here. Other than that, some cultural differences can be frustrating, but all in all, it's nothing huge.
      We love living in Yanahuara. It's close to most anything you'll need, and it's very safe. But it is one of the more expenseive areas to live. We'd also recommend Cayma or Cerro Colorado.

    • @TheFandrichExpedition
      @TheFandrichExpedition  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Gianna! We have been to La Antigua, and it's a beautiful town. It is much smaller than Arequipa (La Antigua has a population of around 45,000 while Arequipa has a population of 920,000 in the metro-area).
      Arequipa is a nice, modern city. You're correct - we have three malls, and I don't believe Antigua has any. However, Guatemala City is fairly close, so I'm sure you could find whatever you need there as long as you're comfortable either driving (if you have a car) or taking the bus.
      Guatemala would be cheaper on the whole than Peru, cost-of-living-wise, but I am partial to Peru. It's a little more developed, and I am a city person, so I prefer city living. I guess, it depends on what you're looking for.
      I hope that helps!

    Enjoyed your video very informative. Do you find fluency in Spanish necessary to comfortably live in Arequipa? Do/did you hire the services of any companies to help you find living arrangements, review contracts/leases, etc?

    • @TheFandrichExpedition
      @TheFandrichExpedition  4 года назад

      Apologies for the delay in response, Richard, but I'll try to answer your questions now.
      Clint speaks Spanish quite fluently, and my Spanish is more kind of conversational, but really just enough to get by. It's definitely helpful to have a more fluent partner to lean on, but I could get by okay by myself, I think (and I'd probably learn more without having Clint to lean on). There are people that speak English here, but not nearly as many as in Cusco or Lima.
      For living arrangements, we didn't use a realtor or profession to help us find an apartment to rent, but we did use a realtor when we were looking to buy a flat. Going through a process to buy would have been extremely difficult with all the long contracts without someone to help, but we had no issues with our rental. The lease was very straight forward and understandable to us.
      I hope that helps, and please let us know if you have any more questions!

      Hi Charles! Thanks for the comment, and good questions!
      Here in Arequipa, there are a number of decent clinics and hospitals. I see a doctor regularly, and in this video a speak a bit more about that with some costs: ruclips.net/video/fXt0--9jOe4/видео.html
      I go to a private clinic, and I'm told it's one of the best in the city. For example, at this private clinic, to see a specialist (without any type of referral), I pay about S/150 (~$45) without insurance. For my situation, after doing the math, it wasn't worth it for me to pay for health insurance here as I'd pay less out of pocket without insurance. We've found that health insurance, like everywhere, is pretty costly.
      Also, Clint's mother had to be hospitalized when she was here visiting, and we were very happy with the care she received. For an emergency room visit, plus medications, plus a 10-night stay in the hospital, she paid $3,000 out of pocket with no insurance at a private hospital.
      I hope that helps, but please let us know if you have any more questions!

      Good question! We haven't had any problems like that; however, I would say to keep in mind that the Peruvian sense of urgency is much different than those of us from The States (etc.). My guess is that it would be repaired, but it would take some time and some reminders in most cases.
