  • There are many lyrics available to this song. It seems that no singer repeated the same lyrics twice.
Here is one of the results I found on Internet.
Note: Not the same words that they say on this video.
Thanks for the memory (Leo Robin/Ralph Rainger) - Shirley Ross and Bob Hope (The Big Broadcast of 38)

    Thanks for the memory
Of rainy afternoons, swingy Harlem tunes
And motor trips and burning lips and burning toast and prunes
    How lovely it was!
    Thanks for the memory
Of candlelight and wine, castles on the Rhine
The Parthenon and moments on the Hudson River Line
    How lovely it was!
Many's the time that we feasted
And many's the time that we fasted
Oh, well, it was swell while it lasted
We did have fun and no harm done
    And thanks for the memory
Of sunburns at the shore, nights in Singapore
You might have been a headache but you never were a bore
    So thank you so much.
    Thanks for the memory
Of sentimental verse, nothing in my purse
And chuckles when the preacher said "For better or for worse"
    How lovely it was
    Thanks for the memory
Of lingerie with lace, Pilsner by the case
And how I jumped the day you trumped my one-and-only ace
    How lovely it was!
We said goodbye with a highball
Then I got as "high" as a steeple
    But we were intelligent people
No tears, no fuss, Hooray! For us
    So, thanks for the memory
And strictly entre-nous, darling how are you?
And how are all the little dreams that never did come true?
Aw'flly glad I met you, cheerio, and toodle-oo
    And thank you so much.

For some reason, when Shirley Ross sings "awfully glad I met you" very near the end of the song, that's when the tear ducts open up for me. Anyone else feel the same way?

I work at a small town movie theater as a side job. Due to the recent CoVid-19 outbreak, a lot of small town businesses are going out. Our theater was one of them.
Our general manager came in one day, shut down all the projectors and audio equipment, returned all the hard drives containing movies and trailers, and put "Thanks for the memories- Bob Hope" on our theater marquee. I didn't understand the reference, so he sent me this video. Such a beautiful and emotional scene.
I was there for almost 10 years, ever since I was 17.
Oh well. Thanks for the memories.

So, it's like 1981 and I'm new to New York, and I see Leo Robin do Lyrics and Lyricists at the 92nd Street Y. He's very old and frail, but he's all there, and toward the end of the evening he tells this story: He and Ralph Rainger are working on The Big Broadcast of 1938 at Paramount, and the producer tells them, you have to write this duet, it's for a sophisticated New York couple who still love each other but broke up, and it has to have lots of jokes but still be touching... They wonder, how are we going to do this, but they go to their office and write this, and come back and audition it, and the producer, who's going through a divorce, starts weeping. So they figure, we guess we did this right. Then they get an Oscar. Then Mr. Robin sings the whole thing, in a whisper, and by the time he gets to So strictly entre nous, Darling, how are you, and how are all those little dreams that never did come true, I'm a puddle. And I think, yes, this is why I came to New York.

To say this is nostalgia at its peak is an understatement. My late wife and I shared most everyone of these memories, just missed out on Singapore, the Great Wall of China and lipstick on my tie. They’re my memories now. Nice to hear them set to beautiful music and think back on a life well lived. My dreams did come true, but still, I thank her for the memories.

There are so many classic scenes in movies but imho this is one of the very best. The song itself, so full of images, the way they sing it, their reactions to the lyrics and their emotions are just perfect. And it seems spontaneous, like it was never even rehearsed, not even once. Just beautiful.

"Apparently, director Mitchell Leisen was having trouble setting the right tone for a scene between the amicably divorced couple Bob Hope and Shirley Ross; Robin and Rainger attempted to convey that the two were still in love without saying so, while maintaining a light tone.
When Leisen heard 'Thanks for the Memory' he pronounced it unfunny, but he was so moved he knew he had to use it. Staff composer Freddy Hollander broke down when he heard it. Shirley Ross sang it, and it was all she could do to keep from crying on camera."
From the book 'Hollywood Rhapsody, Movie Music and its Makers 1900-1975' by Gary Marmorstein.

Such a wonderful song and song lyrics. "We were intelligent people," is in it's own way, about the sexual revolution, i.e. we could have an affair without making a fuss--or alternately--we could get a divorce and move on with out lives. Both are about not being sentimental about sex/romance. But of course, the song is saying: We only think we can be unsentimental: Love hurts when it ends!

    Best Original Song of 1938.
Put on your thinking caps and name the song that won the Best Original Song one year later. Good luck.

I had to look it up and saw that it was from The wizard of Oz, 'Somewhere over the rainbow"
I took a stab in the dark and thought maybe it was Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, but that was later.

Ross and Hope were paired in 3 movies, the big broadcast, the movie thanks for the memories, and another movie called some like it hot/rhythm romance. My question is, does anyone have access to the third film, and if so, could they post it in it’s entirety on RUclips or something else?

The movie was awful and absolutely stank according to the critics then and viewers like me now. But this song with Hope and Shirley Ross went gangbusters. It was acclaimed by the critics as being really special and became Bob Hope’s life-long theme song - as we;l it should.

It was a movie with several high points but very little holding them together. "Thanks For The Memories" is a great scene ... Mr. Fields had a some funny spots, Martha Raye is fun to watch .......... but you fall asleep in between the good moments. Those star packed spectaculars often fell flat.

Please, does anyone know a good, truly good, instrumental version that I can use for a very special project I want to make? Thank you so much in advance... this is really important to me. It's for something very special that I'm very passionate about.

It's called: "The Big Broadcast Of 1938"
Paramount did series of star studded 'Big Broadcast" films ... this was the last one as it fell a bit flat with the public and critics. It had stars but lacked any real cohesive quality.
