She struggled with drugs and alcohol, and depression most of her adult life. She seems to have had a hard time maintaining relationships. She is one of the baddest Blues guitarist around, bar none, and I love her to death! That final chord, played by Bruce Hornsby is a killer! It's a final twist of the knife, and pure devastation. I know this is a year old, but I was doing a “re-watch” as I often do. And that’s how I feel- having chops where you can certainly sing and belt it out is great! I certainly couldn’t come close! Lol However, with Bonnie doing this her way, it’s much more powerful being “vulnerable with that raw emotion than just singing to the hilltops- Prime exampled(Jamel mentioned it too) was when Whitney did “I will always love you” and everyone went nuts- NO disrespect to Whitney ✋🏼, she definitely could do fb (R.I.P. Whitney Houston ❤️🙌🏻) however.. Dolly’s was much more impactful for me. Same with “Power of love.” I adored that adored that song with Laura Brannigan (R.I.P. to Laura Brannigan ❤️🙌🏻❤️) doing it!! Celine Dion comes out with a cover of it (a good one) and everyone thinks it’s a brand new song-🤦🏻‍♀️I was screaming Laura Brannigan every time!! Lol. Same with Dolly, it has that raw vulnerability that really makes it.. No matter how well you blast those notes,etc..

@Patricia Mitchell "selling the song" has nothing to do with money changing hands or who wrote it. IT'S ABOUT THE DELIVERY. She's not wailing or screaming or even belting the song for power. She's letting the devastation of the person's giving up come through. It has nothing to do with who wrote it or song rights. I've heard Adele sing it, and Bon Iver sings it, but Bonnie's is the best to me because she lets the utter devastation and vulnerability come through. It's no big production. She's just laying her heart bear to someone who doesn't love her and she's just praying they give her 1 time before they leave her and she's stops punishing both of them. Sorry you weren't familiar with the term

Fun fact: Bonnie didn’t write this one, but she was the original artist. It was written by Mike Reid who played in the NFL - he was a first round draft pick for the Bengals. He retired from football to be a full-time songwriter. And Bonnie, who made this a hit, is much more of a blues-based guitarist who’s got some genuine chops - so it was unusual for her to have a piano-based ballad as a hit song.

Not over still wanting that person, but there is nothing like the feeling of loving someone with your whole being, and knowing without a doubt that it will never be returned to you. In my life, this song brings back really sad memories. Not to say it's a bad song, 'cause it's not...it's great...I love it. Just makes me think of stuff that I'd rather NOT think of...

The song has quite a backstory. One of the 2 writers read an article about a man who was going through a divorce and in a rage shot at his separated wife's empty car. When considering sentencing the judge asked the guy if he had learned anything and he replied "Yes, Your Honor. You can't make a woman love you if she don't" .

This brings me close to tears every time I listen to it .. especially the line "I'll close my eyes. Then I won't see, the love you don't feel when you're holding me" .. Brilliantly written, heart-breaking song, and no-one sings it better than Bonnie Raitt.

Bonnie was/is a tough as nails road tested blues player. But there was always a sense of human frailty. This song done by her always touched me. She was brave enough to expose some vulnerability.
