- Here's what an Amber Alert looks and sounds like on an iPhone. An Amber Alert is a child abduction alert system. Expand the description below to read how I was able to be ready to record this alert and what exactly an AMBER alert is.
These alerts are also seen and heard when there's a Winter Storm Warning, such as a Tornado is near, during Flash Floods, and also when there's a Dust Storm like when the Phoenix area of Arizona is sometimes hit with those huge sand storms called Haboobs.
How was I ready to capture the alert on video?
Well, I had two iPhones (one for work and on personal) and so when my personal one started going off and alerting, I quickly silenced the alarm and then started recording the second iPhone that I had which started it's alert very soon after the first one and I was able to capture it from the start.
Why is it called an Amber Alert?
The Amber Alert originated in the United States in 1996. AMBER is officially a backronym for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, but was named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas, in 1996. Every time I hear the noise t gets me really scared. I don't get scared by them when it is raining because every time it rains here in Vegas (not sure about anywhere else) there is a flash flood warning, but when it isn't raining and a child got kidnapped I get really scared.

I just got an AMBER alert yesterday, and let me tell you. I was in the car with my mom and sister, and all of our phones started going off. That sent chills down my spine. Stuff like child subduction, haunts me. I couldn't sleep last night.

Antonio Ellis Yeah, sadly, they still come up no matter what, even if it's on silent. Only way to stop it is to turn the alerts off. Then, those sneaky fucks, just turn it back on every time you update your damned phone. UGH. I don't care about wandering loaves two states over at 2am
Mikayla Heiden If you are receiving the alert, then the alert is being sent to you for a GOOD reason and that reason is that the person who's missing is possibly with someone that could be travelling through your area. They don't just send it to people for no good reason. They might have had information that lead them to believe that the person who has the missing person might have been travelling through your area, and hence the alert was sent to you and others in your area.
And yes, it takes two seconds to turn the alert off in your phone's settings so stop whining like it's such a big deal that you get an occasional alert for someone who's missing. God forbid it was every someone that's close to you because it's obvious you have no compassion for others.
I live in Florida, and during preparation for Hurricane Irma we were at Walmart getting supplies, and nearly everyone's phone in the whole store did this all at once. It was pretty creepy.

We had an amber alert the other day and it was at 3am on a Sunday morning and i fell out of bed. I heard my mom scream because it woke her up. My sister said her husband flailed his arms and smacked her in the face. My dogs started barking and my dad jumped out of bed and almost tripped on a blanket.

It does two things this way: catches my attention and tells me that there's information coming that could be a matter of life or death not to heed immediately. I think that there shouldn't even be an option to disable it, personally. Dealing with a massive emergency hinges upon disseminating information very quickly.

I remember a time when I was in second grade, my family and I were watching this huge cloud come barreling through the valley (we live in Nevada so mind that these are rare for us valley dwellers) as it was making its way through my moms phone was going off saying : seek shelter/incoming sand storm. Or something, it first hit where we live about 15 minutes after the alert. It was the first major sand storm I ever experienced. We later find out that it originated from Western Utah which would explain it because at the time a big thunder storm was there... but it would become the most bizarre thing I ever experienced, when I went to look out the window you couldn’t see anything except for orange red sand, after it cleared there was some things a bit damaged but what caught my attention the most was the layer of sand all over everything... I know this comment is long but I just felt like sharing it with the community.

I once was in a dark room at night.
It was raining.
I was on my phone watching youtube.
And then...it happened.
I had an amber alert and my heart jumped.
I hated watching youtube in dark places while it's raining eversince.
My phone is constantly on Do not Disturb. I am lucky.
It will still play even if you have do not disturb on. Not trying to be rude or anything. Unless you actually turn off emergency alerts ( not recommended) you will get them even if you are at 0 volume, silenced mode on, and do not disturb on too.

I live in New Jersey and I had this alarm 20 minutes ago and it scared the crap out of me.

If you want to you should have the option (on iPhones anyway, unsure about Blackberries or Androids) to turn them off. On iPhones you click "Settings", "Notifications" and then scroll down.

I live in Arizona, and every summer, we get at least 5 of these alerts. Then from July/August to November, we get monsoons. And sometimes we get dust storms and a monsoon, so I just call it the dirt apocalypse. It makes everything super muddy and gross, and we get these alerts a lot.

If you wanna know how, go to messages, go the settings (in the messages app), scroll down once you see emergency alerts. Press on emergency alerts and it will say "emergency alerts set which alert types to recieve" and disable them

I am from Mexico but I go on shopping trips to phx/tucson often during the year and I'll never forget getting one of these on my phone (it was a flash flood)... I was at the az mills mall and it was raining really bad with lots of wind, the palm trees outside looked so bent I thought they'd come off the ground! The interesting thing is that my phone doesn't work when I'm in the states (wifi only) so it was cool that I could still get the alerts. That sound is really scary though.
