Painting My Van - with a £30 electric spray gun!

This was something I never thought id do!
I am absolutely not the person to ask to paint anything, ever.
I've always hated it, so tend to swerve it whenever possible.
So when I decided to take on the mammoth task of painting B'lister, anyone who knew me thought id lost my mind, and perhaps they had a point!
Not only did i decide to paint the entire van myself, I chose to paint it using a cheap and cheerful panel spraying gun made by Parkside, the Lidl exclusive tool brand!
I got the idea from another RUclips channel i watch @LT_TOMMY_
In his video, he had success so i figured it should work for me too right?
Well, in this video, we will find out!

Kernomadz was never intended to be a channel based on fixing or maintaining the van, though I'm aware that's how it seems at the moment!

I worked with a car sprayer years ago. He was a real pro. He showed me a few things but theres a learning curve.
I was crap at it, but he'd do a crazy good job with the same kit.
These a level of skill involved, and I think practice helps.
The van turned out pretty good. I've seen a lot worse by people who claim to know what they are doing.

Been saying for about a year now I wanna do my Luton in RAF Blue Grey satin from paints for trade, even have their tester colour plastered over my garage door so see if I like it… and also raptor the bumpers 100%….

I'm in the process of doing a micro camper conversion (Vauxhall Combo), and as fate would have it I purchased the exact same paint and colour for the respray. So thanks for showing me what it will look like on the van, and after seeing your van, I'm happy with the colour choice.

It looked really good in the after shots, I wasn’t sure about the finish in the workshop, but it really does suit the van, especially with the raptor.

I used the same paints for mine but rollered it on! Got good coverage! It’s been done a few years now and to be honest it’s lasting well! You’ve done a good job on yours. Looks nice!

That was the whole point tbh. I don’t have a big budget, just a need to get it done. And this seemed to be my best option! It’s not a pro job at all, but given my skill set and tools, it’s as perfect as I could get it so I appreciate your acknowledgement of that my friend. 😎🙏

Fair play mate, the only thing I've got left to do on mine is paint the outside. I've had the paint for 6 months and can't bring myself to do it 😅
I know exactly what you mean! I found that as soon as I started sanding the paint, I had no choice but to go for it 😂

For anybody else thinking of doing this, just use 'Dulux metalshield' can be mixed in thousands of colours, and just turps thinned. satin or gloss.

@@Kernomadz never painted a vehicle with it, but i use it when painting gates and railings, any outside metalwork, nice interior mate

I brush painted mine with Musou black took me an hour & 1 litre of paint looked great for the first few days, nowhere near as smooth as yours lol 👍✌
I've got the Aldi equivalent spray gun and rustoleum, we'll see how I get on!

I havent watched this video yet and it will be the first i watch. I clicked on the thumbnail because i saw this spray gun in the middle of Lidl and was so tempted to pick it up. It was for cheap, so i backed away and resisted. Did i miss a bargain or not?

Tbh, it depends on what you expect to get out of it. I’m over the moon with it but it’s definitely not a flat professional finish. I’d say, if you have access to an air compressor, that would be better, but as far as convenience, I thought the park side one was pretty good! 😊 👌

Thanks! Someone else suggested that too…it’s satin paint, but could use a buff up. Would compound protect it too?
@@Kernomadz cutting compound is only for lacquer. if you use it on paint you'll burn straight through.

For a roller paint job, it's pretty good. There's paint on the van.
Pretty good I've painted a few cars back in there 80s with one of those gun. Any problem I had was it was trip off the plastic ring and then spit all over the paint. I purchased one of those stupid other guns you showed and I can't get it to paint. Cheers Graham
You dont sand 2k between coats mate light coat first wait about 10 mins depending on temperature then on with a heavier second coat wait for 10 mins or so on with third heavy coat when fully dry then you deal with imperfections and runs if you have any by polishing .Good job though and your orange peel is to with the gun and air pressure and paint mix paint was probably a tad too thick .i used to mix my paint runny as hell to get a nice fine spray but nice job all things considered mate .and having no extractor fans didn't help with over spray on the finish .but fair play pretty impresive

In all honesty, when I do it again, I will most likely use a proper gun. and the info about coats is very helpful! The website said around 4 hours between coats, but much thinner coats layered makes loads more sense 😁

When I did my trims in raptor, the paint came with its own gun. With that said tho, I don’t know if the park side would work with raptor or not?….
I will possibly be doing a bit more raptor soon tho, so it’s something I may attempt 😂🤷🏻♂️
I suspect that some of your initial problems could be down to using the cheap thinners. After penny pinching in the past I've realised that it's worth spending a few bob more to get a better result if I'm investing a lot of time in a project.
Anyway, it's looking good and you're entitled to feel proud of yourself.
The color is nice, the execution wasn’t the best but at least it was entertaining😂
How did the spray gun stand up to having a solvent-based paint through it?
I always thought they were only meant for water-based stuff like emulsion paints / woodstain etc. I might have to bag one myself, next time our Lidl has them in, if they're usable with solvents. Certainly cheaper than buying a compressor and air sprayer.
PS -I like the "Orange Peel" look. But then I have brush-painted previous vans I owned, with Hammerite. I call it the "Mad Max Finish".
No clearcoat needed for the paint? Helps preserve the paint much better

I would never use an electric spray gun to paint a vehicle. A garden fence or even emulsion on internal walls but getting a fine finish on body panels, er no.

your paint wasn't thin enough my friend, thin coats and build it up, layers !! and looks like raptor finish on final coat !!! BUT, looks ok in the end

I chased the smooth finish, but in the end,I just glad to have the van painted 😂

i did that to my car when i was 17 outside in a dirt gulley, im now 72 , if id known then what i know now i could have just cut the orange peel back and it would have looked even better, still looked ok though

I was lucky mate. The quarry I used to work at let me use the workshop while it was quiet. 🤙

@@shane555honestly mate, i just happened to be covering a day there and mentioned painting. Luckily it was empty for a bit!
When (if!) the good weather gets here, livestock will be in the fields. The barns will be empty so it might be worth asking about?

Ten out of ten for effort. The cheap electric sprayer caused you a lot of unnecessary avoidable problems. Just another hundred quid gets you a DeVilbiss with a decent atomisation, a much larger spray fan and a big difference in the end result. Do the roof first next time!

Not really the right kind of gun for the job, and the pickup was on back to front, probably the cause of the spitting. But fair play for the hard work and a reasonable result! 👍🏻

I was lucky to be able to use the workshop at the quarry I used to work at. (It usually has machines in there 😂)
If I wasn’t able to use the workshop, I would have asked a few local farmers if I could use their cow sheds as the cows are usually put into fields this time of year.

Used one of these gun to creosote my shed. Very noisy & vibrates so badly the paint pot kept unscrewing. Utterly terrible thing.

There's always something niggling away at me whenever I've not given, whatever it is required of me, everything that's needed.
I completely agree. Sometimes I kick myself for half-assing something. but with this, being as I’ve never attempted anything like it, I feel like I have given it my best. So even tho it’s not smooth or perfect, I’m happy with it 😁😆
