Last Chance Mine: Strange Light Encountered While Exploring Endless Tunnels (Part 1)

  • Unexplainable. That word sums up the startling, strange, white light that momentarily appeared in my video footage while underground in the abandoned Last Chance Mine. Was it a ghost or a more mundane phenomenon? I'm not sure. One thing I do know for sure is that the massive Last Chance Mine produced over 270,000 tons of tungsten during a thirty year period. This abandoned mine has four or five inter-connected levels and over a mile of tunnels.
    Here in Part 1, I team-up with Tom and Julie to explore the main haulage tunnel and some of the branching drift tunnels. Some unusual artifacts we found in this mine were metal ore chutes operated by pistons, an old Iris soda can from the 1970s, and a device that constantly measures and records the humidity level and temperature inside the mine.
    Don't miss the sneak-peek previews of exciting scenes from Part 2 at the end of this video!
    Part 2, where we climb 300-feet of ladders and explore an extensive upper level, is here: • Last Chance Mine: Clim...

    The great thing about You Tube is channels like yours that take us along to explore and see things that we'd otherwise never see. Thank you all for broadening our horizons and opening our eyes to the fact that, every time you explore a place you've never been before, you will leave with more knowledge than you went with.

      If t hat was the main hualage tunnel, and it is a STRAIGHT tunnel from entrance to the face then there was probably a combination of debris obstructing the light coming from outside and that last moment when the light shown was the unobstructed shot from entrance to camera lens.

      Hey, Seth! I thought the same thing initially, but the haulage tunnel did have some slight curves in it. It wasn't totally straight. I think the light was, as others have mentioned, some kind of internal lens flare or some strange anomaly like that. Thanks for your comment!

      Agustin Alejo Gimenez For some reason, the army guys left some stuff in those bunkers, either just all the wires and other electronics, which were actively stolen in the 90s, or even old weaponry, which is still able to shoot. That’s mainly in the bunkers near the military bases though, the civilian bunkers are just guarded. Also, the penalty for going into places like that might go up to a thousand dollars, and an average person makes around 250. So yea, you either die physically, or economically.

    If I had to guess those are pnuematic (air/gas) actuators operating the ore chute gates. As for the light, that was super strange. It occurred well after the beam of your light was no longer shining down the adit so it doesn't seem it was a reflection.

  • @MrJohnboyofsj
    @MrJohnboyofsj 3 года назад +55

    If you look carefully the light only appears in the same instant he moves his flashlight to a different angle on the wall. I think there may be some weird reflectance thing which Id love to hear an explanation for but I don't think it's a camera distortion or lens flare.

      @Uri Gressel and @Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places, one of my first thoughts was a digital recording anomaly also, but notice the anomaly stays with the tunnel while the camera is panning. If it were just an anomaly, I would expect it to stay in the same spot on the CCD. Since it stays with the tunnel I think it's real. How remote is the mine? I suspect someone came in after you and didn't want to be seen.

    • @simiamalum5487

      Long story short... It's lens flare. I'm not sure what the reflection is coming from, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. It does move and you can see it against the rock closer as the camera pans. The shape also indicates flare to me. Final piece of evidence... There is absolutely no way a light that bright would have gone unnoticed in a mine had it actually been...well...a light. Especially out of the corner of your eye where there are more rods (sensitive to light). You WOULD notice.
      Cool trick for seeing in the dark (very low diffused light). Scan side to side of where you want to look/walk. You will see better contrast outside your area of focus and overall improve your night vision. Neat artifact though. The kind that makes you go, "huh...?"

    What I love most about these videos is the simplicity of them, there isn’t a 5,000$ camera with perfect angles with perfect light, you don’t show your face the whole time, no flashy lights and captions just straight forward, you give the information as is, throw in a comment on the screen yoy didn’t say and just let the exploring be the video and come across some cool things and experience some bizarre phenomenon but none of it seems staged, you don’t draw massive amount of attention to it, you acknowledge it and move on, I appreciate all of this! As much as I love weird things that are creepy and possibly paranormal, I would have to classify this as a slight camera glitch. Great video, those pistons are crazy AF. I discovered your channel through Nukes top 5. That mine with the chains swinging for no reason was so Fing creepy and weird. The mine with the demonic whispers was another creepy gem. Because of those videos, I got introduced to all your videos which are amazing even without anything creepy happening. The strange flash of white light seen in this video most likely was “ignis fatuus” or will-o’-the-wisp. From Wikipedia: “Modern science explains the light…as natural phenomena such as bioluminescence or chemiluminescence, caused by the oxidation of phosphine (PH3), diphosphane (P2H4) and methane (CH4), produced by organic decay.” The rational side of me wants to believe the scientific explanation but the irrational side of me wants to believe it’s supernatural. I will tell you that this mine was exceptionally dry and arid inside. They say that ignis fatuus is caused by decaying organic matter and is usually seen over swamps and bogs. This mine was bone dry and didn’t have any decaying organic matter in it. So I don’t know….

    Thank you so much for this very interesting and informative video, this mine certainly had plenty of room to manoeuvre. The streak of light definitely came from the roof of the main tunnel, not from further down it. If you view the section at .25 speed and go back and forth a few times, you can easily follow a line from the tunnel roof to the light, which I theorize is a reflection from something.

    Our body doesn't react strongly to too little oxygen (i.e. symptoms of exposure, or lack of it in this case), it reacts to too much Carbon Dioxide. Several people at work talked about passing out in high nitrogen areas with no feeling of a shortage of breath. That's why, at work, we wore “four-gas” monitors, they measured O2 Oxygen, LEL (Lower Explosive Limit), CO (Carbon Monoxide), and H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide).
    Be careful, the monitor is a great thing, a necessity, to have. Chemical Reactions (rust for one) can consume Oxygen in areas where Oxygen is relatively low. We had crated Bags of Charcoal, they were labeled to Deplete Oxygen if stored in an area with limited air circulation. But with the Monitor, be sure it’s calibrated accurately. Our units alarm if a condition occurred, and when the unit is returned to the Bump Test Station (and battery charge, both done daily) it would download the events to the main computer and Jeopardy Reports (no, not the game LOL) were generated and we were contacted depending on the exposure and level.
    We wore Air Purifying Respirators often (and some wore breathing air often, depending on the job), and the Monitor had to be worn at Breathing Level, i.e. nearly neck level, on a special tab on our work jackets, and when breathing out, the exhaust valve might be just above the monitor in certain positions, it wasn’t uncommon to set off the alarm. It’s an informal way of testing it, since exhaled air is lower than 19.5% Oxygen. If you breathe out, onto the monitor, and it doesn’t alarm, (it might take a few tries) don’t trust the monitor.
    In summary, Low Oxygen Levels do not produce profound symptoms, but an excess of Carbon Dioxide produces an increase in rate and depth of respiration and an increased heart rate, so LOW OXYGEN LEVELS can be insidiously dangerous, possibly resulting in passing out without any, or mild, symptoms.
    Air can stratify, wear the monitor at breathing level to assure you are getting needed oxygen in sufficient amounts.

    There are things that live in abandoned mines, tunnels, and caves. Their eyes do tend to be highly reflective with white light and it doesn't take much light to catch a glimpse. The reason you didn't see it when looking directly down the tunnel was because it was hiding, and there were many places for it to hide. Catching the eyes at the last moment is because you were turning away from it so it felt it could look at you/follow you through the tunnels. Your friends were ahead of you and you were essentially by yourself at that time. If you didn't feel like you were in danger then it was probably just curious about you and your friends being there.

    How the piston works: it is almost certainly a fluid/air damper. This means you have a solid sliding "plug" with oil or another hydraulic fluid on one side, then air (or a more inert gas like nitrogen) sealed on the other side. The piston is attached to that plug.
    Air can compress, liquid can't, so increasing the fluid pressure with that little valve on the back drives the plug into an increasingly firm cushion of air. Once the piston had contacted the rock, they could continue increasing the pressure to a very specific point.
    This was useful as you could apply an exact amount of force to a small location for a very long time.

    Those pistons were probably run on air or oil. But they are a one way piston, that means ,there has to be weight on the piston arm to collapse the piston rod. They would lessen the amount of air or oil in the line and that would allow the weight of the ore to push the piston down or open the shute and allow the ore to fall in the rail carts. Awsome video! Thanks.

    Very interesting indeed! It is the quiet, unassuming types of paranormal event that interest me the most.
    The light seemed very white indeed, not yellowish or orange such as an old tungsten bulb or even a naked flame would produce. Carbide/acetylene flames are intensely white. In comparison even the daylight did not seem such a pure colour when you looked back several times beforehand. I think the slight blurring is due to the camera moving rather than a property of the light itself. The light also didn't appear to move as you swung the camera to turn, so I do not think it was a reflection.

    Hi Frank, love your channel, have been a fan for a few years now. I've watched this one two or three times, today was showing it to my son, and something really struck me. Apologies if anyone else has already pointed this out on this thread, but you make two death comments during this segment; one passing a small collapse (where you wonder if a mine explorer is underneath it), and the second death comment is immediately after the mystery light! The light flashes as you're panning away and one of the very next things you say while looking at an X marked on a timber is, "or maybe someone died". After watching dozens and dozens of your videos over the years, and including the three very haunted videos (that I know of), this may be one of the only times we've heard you ruminate on death in a mine, and this one has a ghostly light flashing you back. Maybe you were subconsciously picking up on some kind of haunted vibe! Anyway, stay safe, thanks much again.

    • @AbandonedMines11
      @AbandonedMines11  3 года назад +3

      Hey, Scott! Great comment! Nice to hear that you watch my videos with your son. How cool is that? You are the first person to point out my two references to "death" while in this mine. I hadn't noticed that I had said those things in this particular mine. Instead of me picking up on a haunted vibe, maybe a ghost was picking up on my musings about death and decided to flash a mysterious light as soon as I looked away. I think you're right -- I don't normally narrate a video and spend time talking about miners dying in the mine, etc. unless I know beforehand that there was an accident of some sort. I never know what I'm going to find while underground, and none of us really know what supernatural qualities and forces are really out there.

    If you put the video playback speed at 0.25, it looks like a set of eyes (2 eyes). It is 2 dots of light placed like the eyes of a person. The way the lights turn on (flash) and then they turn off (go black so the tunnel is just dark) looks almost as if a person opened their eyes. It is not actually 1 big light, it is 2 dots of light that flash.

If so he would either contact you, or stayed out of the mine as long as you was inside. For me it looked like it was something paranormal. But why do you think somebody monitor the air and humid in the mine? Is it because of bats, or what do you think Frank?

    About the same height as a headlamp would be on a miners helmet. Several other mines have these mysterious light anomalies. Even the Josh Gates caught some on video in a mine way down in South America. Wonder if it's some kind of Natural Phenomena. Gases in mines combined with Piezoelectricity ? Some gasses will fluoresce when energized with electricity. Lots of different rocks when squeezed through seismic forces would create an electric current. The pistons were really surprising. Have never seen those used with ore chutes in a mine before. I didn't examine them closely, but I assume the piston rod would extend outward and upward pushing the metal chute gate open. The question I had is wouldn't the extended piston rod get damaged as rocks tumbled out of the chute around it? They must've had a way to avoid that....

    I've watched a few of these, exploring old mines videos, and am surprised that they didn't use old, blunt, drill bits more, to anchor wooden posts to the walls.
    They COULD have drilled 'its LAST' hole with one, and it would make a great anchor to hold up large pieces of wood, which in place, would hold more wood up.
    They'd last year's. They would have to rust ALL THE WAY through before eventually snapping. But that would take an awfully long time, especially in a 'dry' mine.

    Impressivly spacious drift for the time. Wow, I didn't know usb devices went back that far ;) Yes, no easy explanation for that light. Suspect really was just light reflection from the others.

      That USB air monitoring device was certainly a strange find. I don’t know who is monitoring the climate inside that mine and for what reason. We didn’t notice any bats living in this mine, so I don’t know what it might have been used for. The strange white light near the end of the video is mysterious. Nobody else was in the mine except us three. Personally, I think it was just some kind of weird anomaly that happened inside my camera. At least that’s what I’m hoping! I don’t think anything followed me home…

    I think your light is a reflection. If you pause and frame advance (PC, these are the < and > keys) it kicks in just as you're panning across that stripe in the rock face, but the bigger thing is it's still visible as the edge of the tunnel eclipses it. If it were further up the portal, the edge would have covered it immediately.
    That stripe must have been reflective enough to cause an internal reflection in the camera lens. Was there a lick of paint or a crystalline rock there? Maybe something out of the viewing angle did it like a piece of aluminum or reflective tape? All I can tell you is, the edge of the tunnel wall didn't conceal it, which says it's not a distant light.

      @AbandonedMines11  3 года назад

      Thanks, Michael, for your analysis. We don’t recall there being anything reflective in the tunnel. I don’t know what was going on there.

    Strange, how the light goes from dim to bright, looks more like a light being turned on than a reflection IMO.

    Those were air cylinders for the chute gates. There would have been more to the whole set-up when the mine was operating. The yellow overalls are called slickers. The miners would have had those on and a matching jacket to help keep them dry while drilling. The light might have been the person who left the humidity checker? Yall stay safe out there

    So if you pause and use the < and > keys you can go forward and backward a single frame at a time. The light is so high up it would have been above the part where the ceiling of the shorter part of the tunnel is. Meaning if it was an actual light source you'd have seen whatever made it before you turned since your light illuminates the tunnel up to that point. My bet is there was a small bit of highly reflective mineral exposed on the wall of the tunnel that caused a lenses flare. If you look closely at the near wall on the frames the light appears in you can see a similar shaped bright spot on the tunnel wall.

    Fun fact: some phonograph needles were made of tungsten they could play 50 record unlike steel which could only play one. 270000 tons of tungsten ore could make a lot of needles cool vid

      He was moving his flashlight away. Its in pitch darkness. It looks like a miners light. Definitely not a reflection. Too bright for that plus all the metallic objects dven the pistons were all caked in dust.

      I don't know. I don't think so because if it really was reflecting off something then we might've seen metal signs or other things at around eye level. The weird thing is that there were no metal signs, only spray painted signs, and the only metal things I saw were the rail tracks and the pistons, and all of those were corroded or covered in dust.

      @@valandil988 The coke can from the beginning of the video has a fairly shiny top that would definitely reflect light, so not everything is covered in dust.

    It was a refraction from your light inside the camera lens , it only appears to move when you move the camera . It is normal to see such things . Especially recording in low light conditions.

      If you happen to notice this in real time next time it happens. Simply turn off ALL your lights and watch the "Strange Light" disappear ! :) Although it does make for a catchy title :P

    Around 4:09, there is a similar white light anomaly as the camera is panned down and to the right. It briefly appears on bottom, towards the left if the screen.

      Oh, that’s the portal I believe. The portal they entered the mine in. I think so anyways 5:30 is where I believe 4:09 is in, the straight tunnel that leads to the outside
